For your use case get atleast 1tb of storage also take atleast 16gb of ram. Take a look at laptops in the 500-700$ price range. I recommend lenovo & Acer both offer reliable laptops that can last for a few years.

Dad Needs a New Laptop
That's a workload that won't need anything special for specs. I'd suggest just looking out for anything with about 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. For having a few things open at once and space to save the stuff he'll need to, respectively. Other than that, just go down to a local brick and mortar computer store and check out how you find they're built. Sticking with brands you've heard of before is a safe bet (Lenovo, Asus, Acer, Dell,...), except for HP and Toshiba. If he needs a laptop because he wants to store it away and not carry it around, build quality doesn't actually have to be great, either. He could actually run everything off of a mid range smartphone, connected to a display and keyboard, if he wanted to.

I literally came here to say NOT LENOVO and the top comments are all Lenovo. That shit stopped working so fast The laptops that lasted me the longest were ACER. i even dropped my acer and the screen disconnected. I taped it together but it still runs fine

I like Lenovo. I also like Acer. I can definitely recommend my Samsung Galaxy Book. It's the best laptop I've ever had.

What is the best laptop brand for long term use?
I'm biased towards Acer. I've had 3 laptops from them over the years, with each on one lasting between 5 - 7 years. They were all relatively cheaper than their competitors. All were daily drivers, but the 2 that were transported daily in laptop bags didn't last as long as the one that was only transported once or twice a week.
