The Aerons are wonderful chairs. Beware though, they're not for everyone. I have sciatica and this chair does nothing to make it worse, and nothing to make it better. Had one at work and a 1st-gen Autonomous ergo at home. Pain magically went away as soon as we started working from home when Covid hit. The Autonomous ergo chair 2, however... not so much. Brought the pain right back within a week. That one is a cheap knockoff of the first one, it seems. Fortunately their return process works just fine. Probably the best thing you can do is pay close attention to return policies and go on a journey. At least, that's what I'm trying to tell myself during my current search.

How good is the leap's frame for sitting non-standard? Such as legs crossed, or one leg up over or under the other leg? I see a lot of people recommending chairs like the embody that is made to be used in the standard way while working at a desk, and not as an all-purpose chair, which is how the Aeron feels to me. I am in the market to upgrade and give my Aeron to my wife, but it often comes back to the Aeron every time I research. Like you, I need to go to a good store with options and try them out.

I am the same height. There is a lumbar support optional accessory. If you read the exhaustive manual supplied with Aerons, you may learn more than you want. I used Aerons exclusively for over 15 years at two different firms and we had the top of the line models. No complaints unless you prefer to stand.

No idea where you are located but I found a used Aeron at an office furniture store that takes in from corporations when they downsize offices. Not cheap but half what a new one would be and looked new when I bought it.

I have an Aeron size C that I bought off of Craigslist in 2014 for $350. It was made in 2008. I have sat in it for probably 20,000 hours since I have been full time WFH that entire time. The arms do work themselves loose pretty easily, but the chair itself is still in pretty much perfect condition.

I mean what do you mean by "no matter the price"? Good office chairs are all over $1K each. Anything less than this is "cheap". I don't suggest buying one new though - you can commonly get a used one off of Marketplace or someplace like that for far less than new. I paid $350 for mine I personally recommend the Aeron - it's not possible for it to "go flat" with the mesh seating. My chair is now 17 years old. I bought it in 2014, and since then I've sat in it for at least 20,000 hours - I've worked from home the entire time. While the arms are loose, the chair seat itself looks brand new. And I'm not a small guy.

PSA: Secretlab chairs are overpriced bullshit
Had mine for years now with no problems. They are definitely better than pretty much any gaming chair but yeah, with the recent price increases it's more worthwhile to get a refurbished aeron, for reference I paid £369 for my titan 4 years ago and at the time I would consider it the best chair for the price. Shows absolutely no signs of wear so far.

Get a real office chair, not something that looks like a race car seat. If you can't afford an Aeron, go for a Mirra 2 or another well reviewed office chair. Get a docking station of some sort, so you can use external monitor and peripherals. Maybe an external webcam if you want to keep your laptop lid closed and just use the external monitors.

yes phenomenal chairs.. Any size will still be usable and worth getting at that price.. At my old job I used to sit any aeron chair comfortably (Mediums and Large).. At my new company they bought me one for my home, I chose a Small, and while it's appropriate for my body size and fits perfectly, the Medium was more comfy for the way I sat.. BTW, it cost my company $2400. They're hella expensive. This one looks like it's in great condition.. they are very well built.

Ok that explains a lot. I guess.I'm lucky. I bought my Aeron chair 25 years ago and it was used THEN. It has the tilt and height adjustment levers (not knobs) No wear and tear on the mesh at all. It's REALY a workhorse for me. I've used it for editing on the computer where you sit for hours. I'm 5'8" "B" sized chair. It has been comfortable for me but you still have to give your butt and legs break.(standing desk) I've only replaced the wheels with the rollerblade ones and the gas shock. If I recall the generic shock was about $35 on amazon.

My Aeron wheels wore out after 12 ish years. That’s probably almost 30,000 hours of use. I replaced them with the same fairly cheap rollerblade wheels and they’re far better than the Aeron ones that would jam up on wires or the edge of the rug near my desk. Definite upgrade.

Yeah but you can get the mesh replaced too, you'd be looking at maybe €150-€200 for both the back and the seat if you're getting new parts. So then you'd have spent around €500 for an Aeron with a brand new mesh, which I'd argue is definitely worth it.

Yeah, that's supposedly the reason why they can be uncomfortable and why I warned against paying a bunch of money (relatively) for a chair you might not want to sit in if you're just buying a chair expecting it to be an easy sit. Aerons are good chairs, no doubt, but you better know what you're getting into before you get one.

I've sat in my $350 Aeron size C for approximately 20,000 hours at this point, and it was used when I bought it. I've had it since 2014 shortly before I started working from home fully time. The arms are loose, but that's basically the only issue with it. The mesh still looks new. And when I bought it I weighed 350, and I'm still around 285. This looks like it is a fully adjustable model, but just missing the lumbar piece in the back. It's absolutely worth $260 and basically will be good forever. The one caveat I have is on the sizing. Aeron's come in 3 sizes - A, B, and C, with C being the largest. B is the most common. If you are of average size a B will be fine, but you sure don't want an A or a B if you are big.

You know. I said that too. Always wanted an Aeron. My SO got me an Aeron as a bday gift/promotion gift in 2022 and boy does the chair make a difference. My job requires I sit for extended periods of time and I have ZERO back pain AND no discomfort after sitting for hours. You can’t put a price on that. I came down with nasty back pain during the pandemic, working from home, etc. It’s worth it. To me it’s one of those things that you don’t really think of, but once you have it, you can’t be without it. Kind of like AC seats. I don’t think I’ll ever buy a car that doesn’t have AC seats and a heated steering wheel.

Mirra is made from cheaper materials and will show signs of wear on the seat much faster than Aeron. Yes, obviously taste is subjective, but objectively speaking, Aeron is built better and will last longer.

I'm on my second one in 10 years. The frist one was found in the trash and manufactured in 1991it is still in use and I've repaired it several times but the tilt lock sheered off. I just picked up a much newer one off FB marketplace with blue mesh and it's much newer for $250. They pop up all the time under $300 and spare parts are readily available. Couldn't recommend aerons enough.

What is a BIFL item/product you recommend?
I have a Briggs & Riley soft briefcase from 1992, no lie, bought for my first "real" job. It's 1000 dernier ballistic cloth and it will NEVER wear out. It was super expensive at the time (maybe $200?), but damn if it isn't something I'm going to take to my grave. Aeron chair if you can afford to recondition somehow, IME the hydraulics give out. If you're gentle on it and don't futz with adjustment too much, maybe it's BIFL. Would add: Viberg boots. Buy once, cry once. I spent $750 10 years ago on a pair of service boots and only now are the soles starting to wear. The uppers are still bullet proof. Can say the same about Russell Moccasins. In general any "artisanal" men's workwear/heritage brand (so long as made in USA/Japan/UK) is worth the steep buy-in so long as your tastes don't change. Luckily I've been wearing the same style clothing since I was 12. Le Creuset Dutch oven. Got it as a wedding gift 23 years ago, have cooked with it 4x a week since. RevereWare, will co-sign that. Inherited a few from my mother easily 60 years old now. Also All-Clad. You can't wear these out; It's impossible. Most Patagonia gear: It has a lifetime warranty, and they're happy to repair it for you. Their fleeces are pretty indestructible and won't pill (they do stretch a bit at the seams but only after a decade or so. Tools: Basically any plug-in power tool made before, say, 1995 is good to go. Just look for heavy metal cases at garage sales Things like old drill presses and bench grinders also will last forever. Miele appliances: Expensive, but easily worth it. We paid something like 3000 for a w/d set in the late 1990s and they were still going strong in 2018 when we sold that home. Zero maintenance (and was a plus for resale value). In fact I think we more than broke even; since then we've had the usual brands (Samsung etc) and they crap out at about 8 years.

Aeron C. I've owned one for 13 years, was between 250 and 350 pounds for most of it, and the only thing that ever went bad was the tilt limiter, which is a $20 part and easily replaceable.

+1 to this, and well under $1k used. Also look for used office supply/furniture stores in your area. In lots of major metros post Covid/WFH, there are fewer butts in seats, and some offices have downsized. Fancy chairs that were set up for office workers are now sitting in some shady guy's strip mall furniture store. I got an Aeron chair for $530USD from a room full of them, so I got to try the different sizes and find the most comfortable one for me. (And not just Aerons, there were also the nice Steelcase chairs, etc)

Used Aerons are not that bad. Find an office furniture liquidator in your area and you can likely get one for under $500. They're pretty much indestructible, and the market gets flooded with them as they're super popular and companies are always dumping them due to move, shut down, or renovation.

Definitely take a look at any used office furniture stores near you. My local one had piles of Steel case and Aeron chairs 2-400 depending on specs and condition. Got a full featured Leap V2 in leather and aluminum for like 350. It was already 10 years old according to manufacture date but you'd never know looking at it. Still holding my butt very well.

Just be aware anything marketed as “gaming” will increase the price but not quality. Others have suggested the Aeron, and I agree, but that’s out of your price range. If the tornado is gonna have access to your room again, either talk to mom about getting a lock, or ask that step dad pay cash for future damages. If he’s on the hook for damages, he may start to care more about his son’s damage. BIFL stuff only stays that way with proper care; it’s pointless buying the good versions of things if it’s gonna be treated poorly. Lastly; it’s possible step dad was trying his best to replace your stuff. If he’s not a gamer, he wouldn’t know that most “gamer chairs” are poor quality dropshipped aliexpress specials. If I had to replace my wife’s Art stuff that I know nothing about, I’m sure there’s stuff marketed to rubes that don’t know how to discern quality. He may have had good intentions.

Office liquidation shops are the best. I got a mint Aeron in the large size for ~$150 (that was pre-covid, but even with inflation, they’re real cheap) Most of them are a few years old, but if you go to a place near a lot of office buildings, chances are they just sat in an unoccupied conference room for most of its life.
