Good affordable espresso makers
You might be better off getting an Aeropress instead of a low quality espresso machine. For under $50 you can try an Aeropress. It makes great shots, requires less skill, and easy to clean. The only tricky thing is to MAKE SURE you've screwed the filter on securely. I use the inverted method rather than the one recommended by the maker. It doesn't look like a status symbol sitting on the counter, but for those who know, it's the ultimate flex.

Best purchase for me was the Aeropress coffee maker. I was super skeptical, but now I genuinely love my morning coffee ritual. That thing lived up to the hype big time and has held up really well. As for duds, the infamous “best velvet hangers” they recommend were a letdown for me. They started snapping after a few months, and those tiny bits of velvet ended up everywhere. Still salty about that one tbh.

If you're willing to put in the effort I would agree with those that suggest an Aeropress or a Hario V60. I use a Hario every morning and while the process of making the coffee is a tiny bit more involved cleanup is easy.

Second the Brikka. The only reason we upgraded from Brikka to coffee machine was frothing milk. Otherwise the Brikka is amazing. Aeropress is also a great option, if you drink black coffee, (as opposed to espresso or milk coffees), then look at a Delter press. Looks similar to Aeropress but functions differently, and you can put all your water through the beans, instead of adding water at the end.

Our aeropress gets a lot of use and also comes on trips with us. I prefer it to French press since it’s filtered and quicker to make. We have a Eufy robot vacuum that has been used daily for the last 5 years and is still going strong. Not cleaning or food related, but our most used thing in our home is probably our record player. We don’t have a TV on our main floor, so we’re constantly playing music, and records have been a fun hobby to get into.

Aeropress coffee maker. Been using it exclusively at home for a year now. Tastes great, no maintenance, very little cleanup (a rinse is enough), high degree of flexibility in the type of coffee you use, quick (the time it takes to boil water + a minute or so). The only downside is the unique disposable filters, there are metal filters available but I haven't tried them. The disposable ones come in packs of 300 and are relatively cheap so I prefer them so far. I will probably never need a big, bulky, noisy coffee machine at home.

fellow ADHDer here, Aeropress is the best. It's surprisingly ADHD friendly, it's the perfect mix of simple to use, has enough little things to do that it feels like a nice little ritual to set up, and also has very little downtime (outside of boiling water, which is where i fall down the most). I struggled with setting up coffees to be made, walking away and then coming back hours later like oh... damn. But because the aeropress only needs like, barely a minute of steeping, I use that time to pull out a clean mug (or more likely, clean a dirty one sitting in the sink), so I don't have a window to stop and look at my phone or anything. The process is often, set kettle boiling, pull out aeropress equipment, set it up, measure out coffee, pop it in, put filter in the filter thingy ready to go. The kettle is usually boiled at that point, so pour it in, give it 1 stir, put the filter/cap on, get my mug ready, count out loud if I think it still needs time, then press the aeropress into the mug. Add some milk/creamer/sweetener as preferred, take my nice coffee back to my desk to try and get a fresh start on whatever thing I was probably struggling to get started on.

Aeropress + flow control valve (the cap is stupidly expensive for some reason, but its worth imo if you're trying to make slightly more concentrated for a milk drink) I would say grind your own coffee fresh, but you might not notice much difference if it's covered in a ton of cream and sugar. Nespresso machines is the easiest no fuss option if you must go with a pod system. They do have a recycling program where you just send the pods back to recycle once you have enough or bring it to a store.

I also recommend aeropress but it won't by default make a frappe. You'll need to add milk and sugar after. You might want to invest in a small electric whisk as the easiest way to foam up milk, but the whisk won't be BiFL.

Aeropress is your answer. If you can heat water, you can use an Aeropress. Just grind your coffee, put in the filter, attach the bottom, put the number of scoops of coffee you like, put the Aeropress on your mug, add hot water, stir it and press out the coffee. Dilute it with hot water to your tastes. Takes less than five minutes. If you don't like using their paper filters, you can order a permanent metal filter that you reuse.

Aeropress makes much, much better coffee than single serve machines. However, if you don’t prefer to fuss with a lot of pieces, a single-serve French press works well too, it just (to me) tends to taste like it has more sediment than the finer filter on Aeropress.

take away the electronics if you want BIFL aeropress you need hot water, ground beans and a filter - portable Bialetti makes a rich Italian coffee, cook it low and slow like bbq (it goes from 2 cups up to 18 cup) and the old stand by: a percolator, they come in all price ranges and have been around for a long time. the GLASS knob at the top lets you choose your strength (go hot till the first perk, then lower the temp so no boil over) Pyrex even made a clear one you can still find so you can see it in action. find you favorite coffee snob, try each one to see what you like best. (taste, convenience, etc)

Any 'manual' coffee maker is going to be your best bet. Areopress is my preference. You could also go with a pour over (V60), French press or moca pot. French press is great, but the glass ones tend to break eventually. If you like cold brew, Tupperware makes a great cold brew maker that is super durable, and looks good.

Yes but the temperature makes a difference. There are plastics that have been tested and found to not leach into water at 80-95 degrees Celsius. The aeropress has changed material to a safer and more stable plastic since it's first gen or two, and even the earlier models were tested and no leaching was detected. I believe James Hoffman did a video about this. Sure you could avoid the aeropress "to play it safe" but there probably multiple other things that are of much greater risk of potentially causing you to consume plastics.

Manual brews are the best BIFL. Aeropress, V60 pour over, or a Bodum French press are all affordable and will last forever. For a pour-over, you'll need a good temperature controlled gooseneck kettle. For an aeropress or French press, any cheap kettle is probably fine. Temp controlled if you have the budget. These will also last a long time. The biggest bang for your buck for coffee quality is going to be a grinder. Put most of your budget there.

As others have said, the aeropress is a great little thing. The “aeropress go” is the miniature version. Not that the regular ones especially big, but you wanted a tiny gadget, so there ya go I have one and it’s the only coffee gadget I think I will ever need. It makes a great espresso which I can water down with hot water if I want a black coffee, or add hot milk to if I want a latte.

The very simple pour overs (hario, malita, etc etc) are all things that would last until you broke them. I have had two hario v60s over the past 16 years. One’s handle broke because I dropped it in the sink but after sanding the sharp edge (after cutting myself on it) it still *works*, just annoying. The thing I got recently that I love is a small scale meant for small measurements. Overloads at 500g. Great for getting quick, accurate measurements of tiny things. I have a BIFL bigger scale I use when I need like, 800g of flour, but for everything else I just use the little guy. And of course shout out to the aeropress. I could see maybe eventually needing to replace the plunger part? Maybe? I feel like the coffee world is (thankfully) chock full of durable, very-long-lasting, quality stuff and it isn’t always even expensive.

In general I think it's a very good time for coffee nerds with this specific concern - the release of the Aeropress Premium shows that companies see demand in this area & a large number of the home-oriented espresso machines have no plastic touching water (e.g. Rancilio Silva). Unfortunately the automatic filter machines are probably the area that's there's least interest/demand/innovation/new releases so you're largely stuck with older more classic products, which are likely to have plastic. As a lot of other commenters here have mentioned - Moccamaster seems like one of the best options here. Plastic water reservoir & filter basket but still relatively low on plastic overall compared to competitors.

I think you’d be really happy with an Aeropress, but you said no plastic… they make a premium one that is glass and aluminum, but I can’t justify spending that much on an Aeropress when a regular one can be had for like $30 or $40. If price is no object and you want something easy to use, I’d get a Moccamaster Cup One. It’s Moccamaster’s single-serve coffee machine. You’ll have it forever, they’re stupidly reliable. Glass or stainless steel French press would be an option too.

As others have mentioned there are plenty of cheap, plastic pour overs that will make great coffee. Another cheap, non pour-over option that I personally prefer is and Aeropress. Especially if you are making coffee for one. It’s cheap, has an easier learning curve, and requires less special gear to make great coffee. An aeropress essentially replicates some of the effect of an espresso maker where it forces some of the water through the beans with some pressure. That lets you extract more of the flavor with less burning from the hot water. I have one, and I really like it. But like others I'm not sure. I want to brew something in hot plastic that I drink everyday. I also tend to drink a fair amount of coffee, and the aero is a bit of a pain for multiple cups.

Yup, totally agree with that answer. Grinder first (for consistency of particles size). One important thing about grinders: there is only few options that allow to grind for both pour-over/drip AND espresso. Baratza ESP encore is one of them. And I think the Niche Zero is another. Moccamaster is great, and seems build to last (I have mine since a few years, I descale it any time I open a new box of filters, and it makes the same coffee as day 1). V60 is a great and affordable option if you want to get into manual pour over. All products from Hario are fine. A kettle is necessary. A gooseneck temperature controlled kettle is a nice to have upgrade. Consider buying an accurate scale (regular kitchen scales are not so accurate, and on 15gr of beans, one gram more or less goes a long way, taste wise). Hario VST-2000 is a good option. If you want to go portable at some point (which is probably going to be, since falling into coffee is a never ending pit of compulsive buys), You can look into the regular Aeropress, and a proper handgrinder. r/Coffee is a great place to get feedback on what you intend to buy before you push the cart button. The inverted method is the only method, in my opinion. My only gripe with Aeropress is it's plastic. Yes, they now make a glass one but it's pricy and breakable. I make pottery and have recently perfected my pour over. It's functionally a Chemex.

Another thing you can do if you're bothered by the fine sediment is get one from Aeropress. Their line has expanded significantly since I bought mine 15 years ago (I use it at work). That said, a decent press should have a fine enough plunger screen that it shouldn't be a huge problem.

I use James Hoffmanns inverted “espresso” method which yields me two “espressos” that I dilute with hot water to get me two long blacks/americanos. That’s 36g of coffee, ground pretty fine (but not quite espresso fine) and topped up with 180-200ml of water, steep to your heart’s desire and press into a carafe. Then decant into two cups and top up with desired amount of water. I’ve played around with the clever dripper, various V60s, drip coffee makers, French presses, chemex, espresso machines, etc, etc, etc and I always come back to the Aeropress. Not only is it affordable, light weight, nearly indestructible and great for travels, but it consistently makes great coffee without any fuss and it cleans up in a jiffy. I now own two of them and couldn’t recommend them enough.

I fill a pint bottle of strong shots and keep it in the fridge. I use a double shot measure, and build drinks like a coffee shop.

I'll preface this by saying I own almost every type of brewer on the market. I've had about a dozen French presses over my life, but every one has ultimately broken. Get the original AeroPress (not a coloured one or the XL) and you may pay a little on filter papers and the rubber gasket every few years, but it's going to be cheaper over time. The Moka pot takes too much time to use when you factor in cleaning, and the gaskets go quite frequently. They also force you to use a set dosage each time, which sucks if you want to vary between making coffee for 1 or 2 people.

I’ve got a Tom Bihn side kick bag for sale 😂 definitely bifl just don’t buy too many like me…not sure if it will be bifl but I use my aeropress daily and have for the past few years and it’s in great shape, they make a glass/metal version now and that’s probably what I will get if mine was to break. My Briggs Riley suitcase has a lifetime warranty and I have been very impressed with it so far, I have the two wheeled cabin bag and use Thule compression cubes that are very sturdy and might be as close to bifl as you can get for compression cubes.

BIFLers, what things do you not understand why people spend their money on?
I get them for 26¢ each at Costco. We only drink 2-4 cups per day in my house. I’m willing to pay a little more for that convenience in the morning when I’m trying to help my wife and myself ready in the morning. Sure beats about $3 for a cup at the coffee shop at my work. On weekends, I make it with fresh ground beans in my Aeropress. It’s certainly much better. But during the week I just need to press a button for my coffee.

As a coffee nerd who also owns a Moccamaster, I'm always a little disappointed because of the hype that coffee maker gets on this sub. The coffee is underwhelming, which makes it a waste to use good coffee on. If I have to make a big batch for guests, it works okay. But if I want to get excellent coffee when I'm buying fresh single origin beans, something like an Aeropress works sooooooo much better as a BIFL coffee maker.

Okay, how many cups do you want to make? 1 cup- Aeropress, but it is plastic and will eventually wear out or hario pourover. If you need to make 2-3 cups there are plenty of great siphons brewers like hario, it will last as long as glass lasts. If you need more than 3 cups Moccamaster or bunn for home depending on your budget. Hario also makes an amazing coldbrew maker, I can't explain why its better than no name brand ones but it just is.

I still recommend aeropress. It’s one cup at a time but I have used mine at least twice a day for over 8 years and only replaced the plunger once and replaced the paper with a stainless steel mesh strainer. I have been using that for 7 years without replacement. Works great and really good coffee.

Aeropress. It’s essentially BIFL as it has only four parts. If I’m travelling somewhere I just chuck the aeropress in my backpack with some ground coffee. The paper filters are easily reused. I rinse mine under the tap and reuse it for ages. Maybe I’ve got shit taste buds but I can’t tell the difference when I start using a new one. At home I use a breville espresso machine, but I think the milk it is capable of frothing makes more of a difference than the coffee itself.

Unfortunately, you can’t make espresso with an Aeropress, they call it an “espresso style” (same with the Prismo). I’ve used it to make that “espresso style” and it also helps the coffee flow a little more controlled with that attachment IMO/IME. I’ve done inverted and the traditional brew methods with the Prismo attachment, though I think the little instruction card that came with the Prismo suggested the inverted method. I’ve just been trying out random recipes each day from the Aeromatic app (has a bunch of Aeropress recipes and a timer).

I find it easier than the traditional Aeropress + metal filter! I bought that as my original setup and then saw the Fellow Prismo suggestion on here and ordered that after I got the Aeropress. I wouldn’t consider myself weak, but MAN did I feel weak trying to get coffee pushed out with that original setup. I expected the same with the Prismo since that’s all I knew and was surprised by the ease I could press it down!

I also have the Fellow Prismo and it’s great. It’s not that hard to get the coffee out/push the plunger down. For reference, I’m a 5’4" medium framed woman and I have no problem pushing the top of the aeropress down. I have a bunch of different manual coffee makers and really only started to use the aeropress more frequently when I got the Prismo. I prefer the flavor to the paper filters.

BLUF: This is the best drip IMO. https://a.co/d/ciHzANO Moka, Areopress and pour-over are fantastic for yourself, but if you need coffee for a crowd the cuisinart is the way to go. I do like a Moka Pot (SS), Aeropress is also good, I have a pour over that I used for years, and have a Kureig with reusable pods. The only coffee method I dislike is French press. Could be the situation I had them in but coffee always seems bitter and over extracted, but could just be my experience at other people’s places as I don’t own one. go.

I recently wanted to upgrade from my Kuerig to an epsresso machine. I did a lot of reasearcah, a lot of reviews, videos, etc. I tried multiple machines, I bought about 5 different ones. I settled on the Bamino, great machine. In all my research, I kept seeing the Aeropress mentioned. I clciked a a James Hoffman video on the Aeropress and learned they;re quite popular, like cult following popular. So I tried one. Game changer! I don't touch espresso anymore. I got a hand grinder (that was another rabbit hole, settled on the Kingrinder P2). Now I can make a great, freshly ground cup of coffee in about 5 minutes. Put kettle on, grind beans. Assemble Areopress, pour in grinds, then water. Stir gently, insert plunger so water doesnt leak out. Steep for 1 minute, shake it up to make floating grinds sink, steep another 30 seconds or so. Press slowly, the top up your cup with hot water. A great cup in under 5 minutes. $100 should get you an Aeropress and an okay grinder. The Aeropress makes good coffee with pre-grounds, too.

Interesting question. Most “manual” coffee gear lasts a long time. Aeropress (at least my old one) seems to last a while (rubber bit needs replaced every so often), moka pot (again with periodic seal replacement) lasts pretty much forever (ask an Italian family), cowboy coffee pot (these work “hard” and last a long time), lever espresso machine, pour-over basket, French press, etc. Heck, I’ve got coffee mugs that are near 25yo.

I've had no issues with water at 100 C adding extra wear so don't think you need to make that adjustment unless you want to for your recipe. I'd be pretty sure if you just replace the head on your old AP it will work good as new. Worth giving it a shot given they're $10. Best of luck 🤞

I wouldn't stress, I retired a chamber from one after 8 years of twice a day use. Because Aeropress is legit, they sell piece parts, so I replaced only the chamber and kept the plunger, cap and stir stick. Still good as new a year later.

I too love my aeropress. I have used them basically since the aerobie was Theo main product. We use the metal filter plus the fancy bottom piece with the rubber hole (you used to have to get it aftermarket but now aeropress makes its own). If I want foamed milk, I use the thing that looks like a coffee press but has a metal carafe that you heat on the stove and then squish the "press" piece up an down until the milk is foamed.

Aeropress works exactly the same after more than 5 years of use. Bodum burr grinder even longer and works perfectly still.

Bodum French press. The regular glass ones. I have two of them in different sizes they’re probably 15-20 years old. They don’t get much use these days because cleanup sucks when you don’t have a garbage disposal. Melitta pourover. I’ve had it since about 2009-2010. It cost less than $4 at the time and and still gets some use. It takes #2 filters that can be found in most supermarkets. Some people won’t like that it’s plastic. Capresso Infinity burr grinder. It’s over 10 years old at this point and still gets used 3-4x per week. Some would argue that it doesn’t grind fine enough for espresso but it does what I need it to do. Aeropress. Pretty much my daily driver lately. Again, some people won’t like that it’s plastic. Bialetti moka pot. I’ve had it for over five years and to be honest I don’t use it much because it’s too big for just myself. I’m sure other brands are as good, but replacement gaskets are easy to find online. Zojirushi thermos. Doesn’t leak and will keep your coffee hot all day long. It’s kind of annoying to drink directly from as vapor collects on the flip-top lid and might drip onto you.

An old school moka pot. Those things are practically indestructible and if you do need to replace the innards, they're pretty cheap to replace too. I keep breaking glass french presses, but my Chemex I've dropped, dropped shit on and practically dribbled. I'm not sure what type of industrial glass it is made of, but I would definitely put a Chemex up there. My aeropress has a lot of pieces. I'm not a fan of that unless I'm traveling because I don't do crap coffee. So as far as durability, youd need to ask a regular user. Another option is those pour over systems. I don't know what they're called but those are those filter holders that sit on the top of a coffee cup and you would do a pour over cup of coffee. Those are indestructible. I think the plastic would have to denature or you'd have to run over it with a truck. I suppose you could put it on a burner and melt it. But I'm assuming you're not going to *try* to destroy it. Still, espresso drinker, indestructible, you want one of the old school stove top moka pots. Takes a lickin, keeps on tickin'. I find brand new ones in thrift stores all the time, when I'm looking to replace my French presses that I broke.

I've had mine 6 years and it seems as good as new, so i consider that a pretty good run. I still love the coffee I make with my aeropress over any other coffee. And worst comes to worse its not the most bank breaking coffee model out there...

I use a kitchen aide cold brew maker I’ve had for about 4 years. I’ve had my Mokapot for about 7 years and it’s in perfect condition. Had an aeropress about 7 years also. Still almost like new.

Aeropress. * It's simple as hell. * It makes pretty good coffee very quickly. * Cleanup takes 10 seconds. * Materials are very strong. It'll last forever. We also have a japanese hot water dispenser at home, so as long as it's been filled recently, I can make a cup of good coffee at home and cleanup in less than 1min.

Our 15 year old Capressso burr grinder gets heavy daily use and has outlasted multiple consumer-grade cappuccino machines. We switched to Aeropress and Moka Pot for making coffee. These are simple devices that can basically last forever as long as you are willing to replace their gaskets. We don't have a good milk-foaming system, but we mostly drink americanos and lattes so we don't care that much about this.
