  This is a good answer. Quality headphones can be repaired if something breaks. Perhaps equally important, they're worth repairing because the cost of buying a new pair is greater than the cost of the repairs. My AKG K701 have lasted me since 2009, and been professionally repaired twice, and I'm only now replacing them for want of something better. I can still use the amplifier and DAC I have, no problem. A good microphone on an adjustable boom or arm, or a tabletop stand, gives better sound quality, comfort and flexibility, and if you buy from a company that makes microphones there's a chance you can get it repaired if it breaks. To give OP an answer, whatever good quality headphones you like (do the research) and a Røde Podcaster microphone, with a stand of your choosing.

  Are Focal Bathys headphones a ‘buy it for life’?

  AKG K371 - the regular passive version, not the bluetooth version. Unlike wireless battery electronics full of perishable batteries and active electronics with finite lives, well made studio cans *can* last decades. I haven't owned the K371s, but I have owned a 30-year-old pair of AKGs, so I can verify they hold up very well (assuming the new ones are comparable, at least. If you want quiet, look at IEMs. Foam eartips are disposable, but passive noise rejection doesn't wear out. I'm from the "if there's no measurable difference, there's no @#$#$@#! difference" side of the camp and will make the following highly controversial statements: * LDAC HD is well beyond human hearing. 24/96 is completely silly outside a recording context. 16/44.1 is perfectly good, LDAC is comparable unless you've got something wrong with your wireless connection, APTX-HD is good enough. * Unless there's something materially wrong with your DAC, one's as good as another. If you can't hear any hiss or noise, it's probably fine - the Apple USB adapter measures orders of magnitudes cleaner than headphones plugged into them. Most "audiophile" nonsense sounds different because there *is* something wrong with it - output impedance or other abnormalities. * If you want a "neutral" sounding headphone, look for something with the harman curve. * If you want accurate headphone reviews, look at Audio Science Review. Most manufacturers lie quite badly. * DSP EQ is great.

  Any good WIRED earbuds?

  I have some: shure se215 (2006 ones), shure e3c, sony mdr15ex, akg samsung earbuds, panasonic ergofit, and some xaiomi mi, skullcandy (cant remember) and akg k-44 not earbuds these. best for price IMO are akg samsung. even they only come with mic, sound was amazing... cannot find them only copies not good sounding (look for china made not vietnam, they came w/ samsung cell phones back in the day. sony budget are really good. shure se215 are great but pricey and e3c not that great but flat and not so expensive. xiaomi's suck panasonic ergofit are good but too bassy as are skullcandy (some wired some bt) and do yourself a favor and get akg k-44 or whatever the new model is!

  College Student Headphone Recommendations

  I have worn mine for about 6 hours today (4 hours continuously). I had bad experiences with earbuds in the past but they are a lot more comfortable these days. If you really want headphones, I can’t blame you. I have a set of old AKG k240 mk2 that I use at my desk all the time. Light weight, good audio, not expensive and such an old design has replacement parts available with ease. Not portable at all but I find that the “headphone=stay at desk + cheap earbud=take with me” combo works really well

  What used to be buy it for life but is now more questionable?

  In AKGs defense, I recently bought a pair of the N9 Hybrid headphones and love them. I’m just not sure how BIFL they are.

  What’s one product you bought that has lasted forever and was totally worth it?

  AKG 240 headphones. Decently priced and will last forever. Best headphones I've ever used, I own two (one for home, one for work).

  AKG K240 mark II studio Best non noise cancelling phones in the business. Better than many costing $500. Source: 6 year recording studio engineer.

  You may find an ATH-M50 for under $150. Sometimes DT-770, but not often. Usually it's the 250 ohm model for the DT-700, and you need some sort of an amp (stereo AMP, headphone amp, or a mixing board would work). One not-as-popular set is the AKG K240 MK II. It's semi-open, meaning they sound more like speakers In fact, I see a pair of ATH-M50s for $133 on Amazon
