What product category has gotten worse in quality, even at the premium level?
Asus Zephyrus G14 and G16 are great for this. Upgrade the ram, add another ssd, etc. Alienware is also like this unless they changed it recently.

Recommendations about a laptop
I've had my Alienware since 2019 and have been very happy to date. not near needing replacement. it is low on storage, but overall holding up for heat management, which was a major issue across multiple thinkpads and HP Business class laptops

What is the longest lasting item you've bought?
I would say my 1080GTX. Brought in 2016 and it still works but I had to put it away as I moved to 4090RTX. Another one is Alienware 25 inch 240hz. Still works since late 2015 and I’m still using it. Nearly 18k hours on the monitor usage

What is the best laptop brand for long term use?
If your only concern is saving money over the long term then I would agree with the 600 other commenters as far as computer suggestions. But if you have other concerns such as not buying a disposable computer and trying to increase the life of just the one laptop then go with a custom built gaming laptop or pc. Find a custom pc builder near you and ask them for the lowest build that will meet your needs. Likely around $900-1000 for light gaming like COD, Fornite, Sims; even less money if you play like mystery/puzzles. Get as far as you can until it gets slow and then go back to the same pc builder for upgrades. It may cost only a little less than a new one, but you are still using the same laptop and not creating waste. To add to some of the comments I read about gaming laptops such as Alienware and MSI, these are incomparable to options like MacBooks and Thinkpads because you are able to change out components on gaming laptops. And while Apple has amazing repairs services they aren’t going to help your laptop keep up with technology. They will try to sell you a new one with trade in values.

What is the best laptop brand for long term use?
I will say, I don't hear a lot of Apple users complaining about their 3, 4, or older laptops. They seem to keep going strong for a while, unlike some of the laptops I have owned. My main laptop is an Alienware and it hasn't done me wrong in any sense yet, however, with it being a gaming laptop the battery was shot within a year.
