Suggestions for a winter coat with high, tight (or adjustable) collar?
[Alpha Industries N-3B Slim Fit](https://www.alphaindustries.eu/uk/n-3b-vf-59-winter-jacket/103141-03-l/) It has a front zipper which covers up to your chin/lower lip. It also has a strap on the back of the hood to make it deep or shallow, and can be made into a snorkel like hood to keeps out the air. Ofcourse drawstring are there to adjust hood. Also the fur lined interior of the hood keeps the ears and head very toasty. The outside shell of flight nylon is extremely durable (one of the most durable I have seen, as they were designed for military), so can take all the beatings of the subway/tube system. It is water resistant, so takes quite alot of rain before the fabric starts wetting out (has never wet out on me yet). I have worn it over a plain t-shirt in temps down to -10C with alot of wind and didnt feel cold (the OG N-3Bs were designed for -60F temps with layering ofcourse). Looks very nice and is something you can actually wear to a restaurant without looking like you just came back from leading an expedition to antarctic.

Looking for a winter coat
Eddie Bauer Stadium Coat or Alpha Industries N-3B slim fit. Wear a cheap base layer (both top and bottom) from Uniqlo or 32 degrees and you should be good for 0F temps. We had 5F temps a couple days ago. I was out in my t-shirt and Jeans with the Eddie Bauer Stadium Coat and was toasty. Kinda felt like out in the open wearing a warm blanket. I also have Alpha Industries Slim Fit N-3B. Tested that one out too in 5F temp and it was equally warm. You can find the EB stadium coat for $199 right now. Alpha N-3B is $250, but you can get 30% discount if you qualify via govx, bringing it down to 175$. My last Alpha N-3B lasted me 10 years before I lost it during move. Don't spend 3-5 times the money on other things like NF, or Patagonia or Arc'teryx or any of the other expensive brands.

I have the N-3B parka from them. Amazing parka and super warm. I would suggest waiting for black Friday sale. It can be had for 30-50% off. I remember when the N-3B jackets, which cost $250 now, were as low as 99$ on sale a few years ago. Regardless, if they don't go on sale for black Friday, send me a PM and I can give you the discount code for 30%. So this would cost $140 instead of $200.

I have an M1 (made in China). Everything is of good quality except the edges of the sleeves and waist. It became fluffy. I also have another Bomber brand bomber, that seems to be better quality

alpha is the original manufacturer and the heritage model is close to exactly how they used to make them. great quality. you might be thinking of the updated “mod” m65 that they also sell. notably worse quality, i would avoid that.

I am gonna assume you meant Alpha Industries? I was honestly happy with it, and from various posts on here it seemed I got lucky with the QA on it. My only gripe with it was the feeling of the coat itself and it always felt too boxy when it was put on. I believe it is a mix of nylon with cotton. Felt very stiff even through the years (I bought mine in 2019). I won't pretend to know everything about the materials that go into the Real Mccoys, but that cotton sateen outer shell feels great...now is it worth the price difference of 500 dollars? We'll thats up to the person. I feel like the Alpha Industries is worth a shot, if the QA is done well...and the fit is right with you. If you bought the heritage version, just understand that they are very oversized (on purpose). I was 250lb when I bought it the first time...bought in large....then returned for a medium, and while it fit better...but still felt too big/boxy on me.

Alpha industries' modern M65 jackets aren't very good compared to genuine issue M65s. They're basically cheap knock offs now relying on brand name to sell. If you're gonna get an M65 field jacket, get a vintage piece. They're cheaper, have more size options (XS, S, M, L, XL with each in Short, Regular, and Long lengths), and are better constructed with thicker shells. Plus, there's plenty that are in pristine (or close to it) condition. Another option is Helikon Tex's M65 which are made to original specification but are more limited in sizing.

what winter coat are yall using?
I'm from a cold part of the country, I dress in layers. My outer layer in the winter is the same as my outer layer in the fall, an Alpha Industries fishtail parka shell. In the winter I have a sweater on under it. In the fall I don't. I have other stuff I wear sometimes but it's usually that. I do have my dad's old ice fishing parka (a Goretex workup from Cabela's long before they were bought out) but I almost never use it. If I'm in a suit or going somewhere nice I have a lined peacoat.

Now I have finally gotten the real thing and trust me there is no comparison. Even the goddamn zippers are a luxury compared to that previous piece of shit. Do yourself a favour.

I set out on a quest to find the warmest reasonably priced coat I could this year because I fucking hate the cold. Alpha Industries N-3B came up a lot on reddit and I haven't been disappointed. Warmer than my Fjallraven down jacket. I lucked out too and for whatever reason it was only $90 a few months ago, but seems to be back up to its normal price of $250, which I'd say is worth it.
