Full grain leather lasts a lot longer than the corrected stuff you see on most fashion boots, so it’s worth putting that front and centre if you want something comfortable that stays with you. Army style boots are fine, though the cheaper versions use leather that cracks fast and the cushy ones end up with foam that packs down after a year so the comfort just drifts away... Anything stiffened with bonded leather panels will peel the moment you get caught in the rain. Goodyear welted soles let you resole the boots instead of throwing them out which gives you far more life than those moulded one piece soles that are basically a short timer set for a couple of years. Vegtable tanned leather linings last better than the synthetic peel off stuff. If the insole is glued foam, it will flatten and a removable leather insole is much easier to replace when it gives up. If you’re in the UK the Altberg Warrior and the William Lennon B5 both hit the durability marks people here look for and you can just wear them without worrying because they work well Your feet will thank you even if the waterproof membrane hype would not since those membranes cook your feet and fail long before the rest of the boot. Altberg boots are pretty good Made from full-grain leather. They are durable, comfortable and water proof! With good care, can last 15-25+ years. You can get it fixed for around £80-100 if needed. And, because the shoe is stitched together, it's easy to repair. No glue!

Best quality work boots
It seems like Altberg will be your friend here. I’m a gardener/landscaper and use their police riot boots that have to conform to BS slip standards. There are a few options and I’ve not been disappointed in any of them. They’re super comfortable and last an age - as well as my job I walk the dog in them 3 times a day.

Tactical boots for security guard
I like Lowa if you don’t want something that can be re-soled. Altberg Defender gets really good reviews, will probably be my next boot but I haven’t tried them yet. Magnum did not last very long.

Hiking shoes - all my footwear gets a worn out heel from the inside and I am desperate to find something that lasts.
Altberg are the best hiking boots I've ever worn, really comfortable and tough. If you're patient you can get an unworn pair of Altberg defenders on eBay for your price point (because they're the British army issue boot but they're just a slightly taller version of their hiking boots.) I wear defenders for all my long hikes.

A list of BIFL not made in the USA
Clothing - particularly jackets: Keela Outdoors - Based in Scotland. I'd say they were better quality than even original arc'teryx gear. I've had their Munro and Belay jackets for coming up 10 years this year, starting to look less than new but in terms of waterproofness the Munro is still going with only being re-proofed a handful of times, the Belay Pro jacket is still going and just as warm as the day I bought it, still easily my favourite jacket, every day I'm wearing one of the two of them, although I've branched out into their Hydron softshell and Solo insulated jackets recently so we'll see how many years they last. Boots: Altberg, based in Yorkshire. Working in security 12 hours a day minimum, I've had my altberg peacekeeper P1 boots for going on 9 years now, again worn daily and they've come up against some amount of abuse, I've had them re-soled once and replaced the laces maybe 3 or 4 times (I polish them daily so the laces end up with polish on them, get rock solid and end up brittle, they've never snapped but I'm paranoid! A side note on consumables, technically not BIFL because they do literally well, get used. Car cleaning: Bilt hamber products - now again, not technically BIFL since they do get used, but I use their double speed wax around 3 times a year. I bought my 250ml tin for about £12 back in 2018, still using it to this day and it lasts the sort of 4/5 months before I get the urge to re-wax it again. I also bought auto-foam (I don't have a driveway or pressure washer so I put it in a pump sprayer for a near enough touchless clean at petrol station jetwashes) - I bought 5 litres of it back in about 2020 for about £15, use it monthly, makes car cleaning SO much easier
