Maytag is nowadays just a rebadged Whirlpool. They do make a commercial unit. On the cheap side, go Amana with the curved lint catcher on the top right. It is also another Whirlpool brand but is based on a 1960s model. Other than that for longetivity go Speed Queen.

I know there is no such thing as a BIFL appliance, but what are your thoughts on this washer? Please no speed queen recommendations, they are too expensive and don't hold enough.
Personally, I would avoid LG, and lean towards Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, Speed Queen, Kenmore, Frigidaire, Electrolux, and more. I know a few of those fall under the same parent companies, but they all specialize in appliances. If you want a Speed Queen but can't afford one now, maybe look at marketplace, nextdoor, etc for a local used one cheap and then save for a bit until you can afford the Speed Queen. I've seen washer dryer sets sell for $40 online and they'll usually run for a year or two at least and you could use that time to save and find a deal on what you actually want and something you know will last.

Is it worth it to spend 1K more on a Trane HVAC over a Goodman all things more or less equal? Any realtors on here? What about resale value?
Trane over Goodman will not affect your resale value one iota. Amana/Goodman has a far better warranty than Trane. Finally, the quality of the installation plays a much larger part in longevity than the brand name on the unit.

Washer and dryer pairs (US) that are worth it, but on a budget?
We have had our cheap Amana dryer from Lowe’s for 9 years and counting, and it’s still solid as a rock. Wasting machine is a different brand basic top loader and only 2 years old, so I wouldn’t brag on or disparage it yet.

Best brand of refrigerators for no issues / longest life?
Our 1999 Amana BX21VL (bottom freezer) keeps going strong. Purchased new when we moved into this house. Huge refrigerator space, using adjustable shelves. Smaller bottom freezer. There is a temperature gradient, from top to bottom, inside the refrigerator. This is probably normal in most refrigerators. Adjust food storage locations accordingly. Rated only 576 kWh/yr. in 1999, one of the lowest. I measured energy use for several weeks in 2015 using 120V plug-in meter. Based on those numbers, I estimate 516 kWh/yr. New similar models have only improved app. 5%. The refrigerant is R134a. The compressor was made by Tecumseh in Brazil. I know this because I've cleaned below and behind it several times over the years. Refrigerator was made/assembled in Amana, IA, and is now a Whirlpool brand. The only downside is the flimsy temp. adjustment slider in the meat tray, which is easy enough to fix. Thereafter, we avoided breaking it by not overstuffing the tray. Also, the sound level is somewhat high, compared to modern units, like my MIL's store brand Midea model, which is very quiet. I estimate our Amana at 45-50 dB, using an old Radio Shack meter on A weighting. Whirlpool still sells these units as either 18 or 22 cubic feet models. If these new versions of bottom freezer models are found to be very quiet, then I would definitely recommend one.

My Hot Point Dryer Died.
TIL that Hot Point makes dryers, though I’m not surprised. My 12 year old Amana washer is still working, except that it won’t balance if too many clothes(any more than a week’s worth) are in it. I had a dryer from them too but got rid of it as my friend was giving away his old one.

That's very much like my Mom's first microwave. It was fantastic. Those were crazy expensive at the time. I found the original receipt in the cookbook that came with it. I'll look again. I remember going to classes to learn how to cook with it.

My Neighbor’s 1985 GE Microwave
LOL we had an original amana radar range from the 70s, it was huge, heavy and would make the lights flicker when it kicked on, for years after it was replaced at moms I kept in in my mobile construction office for reheating lunch and coffee/whatever. it had a timer and an on/off switch, it finally succumbed to old age around 2003 or so, so i replaced it with a cheapie 1000w turntable style from walmart, que the bitching from my guys about how this one takes too long to heat up a sandwich and why cant we get one like the old one, fellas the old one was 30 years old and i think its illegal to make one that strong anymore...

Is Speed Queen still a good choice?
I really wanted Speed Queen but the price was just more than I could afford at the time so I got a basic Amana top load agitator washer that seemed to be of old school design, no fancy features, and it works great, no issues so far in 6 years. I also recommend adding a little borax to the wash basin, it really helps.

My parents have an Amana Radarange from the mid-1970s that looks mostly like that but has a mechanical dial for the timer. That thing worked for decades, and for all I know it still does (I think it's in their basement, unplugged now).

I have one similar, except mine has dials instead of buttons and a digital display. I think it is probably from the same time period, just yours is a higher end model. My parents bought it in 1981, and they replaced it and gave it to me in 1994 while I was in college. Since then, it has been the microwave in my kitchen.

I used to work at the Amana plant that built these (and a hell of a lot of refrigerators) as a summer job during college - our break area had an old commercial microwave that pushed over 3000 watts. During orientation they told us if we were going to use it to heat something up, divide the normal time by 5. When you only got a 30 minute lunch and a few dozen guys wanting to use the microwave, it really helped that it only took like 20-30 seconds to heat up a meal.

That was our first microwave. My mom got it at a discount because it was misbuilt and had 2 buttons labeled START. We were told we always had to keep a cup of water in it in case it was turned on accidentally. Apparently, it would explode the house if it ran empty. The cookbook that came with it had a great recipe for Salisbury steak. And a terrible one for cookies.

Those things were built like tanks. They use radio waves to cook food, so as long as they have a grounded metal mesh surrounding them (and they do if you look at the glass in the doors of most, if not all microwaves, you will see it) aka Faraday cage, there's little chance of that happening. Modern cheaper ones however, are another story. Some manufacturers have little to no understanding of the actual tech being used, so they cut corners where they think they can, and often times where they shouldn't. biggest differences between a $500 dryer made by whirlpool and a $1000 one? Lightbulb inside the drum and moisture sensor, also the steam setting on the fanciest ones. If you have lights in your laundry room and you don't leave stuff in the washer sitting to get wrinkly, not really worth spending the extra money. Look into Amana, it's their lowline brand, same cabinet, same heater element, same drum, just a different control panel.

I believe Amana is pretty much all you can get with non-computer controls, it's 3.8 cu ft. That's going to be the closest thing you can get to a classic and basic manual machine. Maytag has a commercial model that's like 3.5 cu ft One issue with this is that agitators reduce the load capacity. Front loaders and top loaders with wash plates can fit more stuff in them

What is your most unintentional BIFL item?
I have one we bought in 1986. It’s an Amana Radarange. Still works like new. When we had the kitchen redone, I made them put in a cabinet big enough to hold it. I also drive a 2006 Toyota 4Runner that I bought new. Outside of it is beaten up, but the inside looks like new. I’ll probably be driving it until I’m too old to drive.

>The refrigeration unit might not last forever but at least I would stop throwing away complete fridges. This is the main point imo. Find a fridge with available replacement components. My family has owned an Amana for a long time and it's broken down once or twice after a few decades. Replacement parts got it operational again without needing to buy a new fridge. There's no reason to look for a walk in specifically unless you want one or if it would be extremely cheap and easy to maintain somehow.

Amana bottom freezer refrigerator bought in 1990. No repairs, one fan clean up. Best refrigerator in the house, always (has gone with us through 3 houses but it's relegated to the garage since kids arrived. Too small) We also have a 25 year old Krups drip coffee maker in use every day. Still have my parents cloth cord small appliances like iron and waffle maker.

Three simple built options: Speed Queen TC5003WN Washer and DC5003WE Dryer are mechanical, commercial grade and should last the longest. Maytag (owned by Whirlpool) MVWP575GW Washer and MEDP575GW Dryer have commercial grade components and should last long. Amana (owned by Whirlpool) NTW4516FW Washer and NED4655EW Dryer should last a moderate amount of time of at least 7 years.
