What product category has gotten worse in quality, even at the premium level?
Yarp. I've got a couple of $65 t-shirts from American Giant and boy howdy are they incredible, but hard to recommend. AG's cheaper shirts are incredible too, but normies don't wanna spend $35+ on a t shirt.

If you wanted USA manufacturing: Bayside tees and hoodies, Union Made, American Giant. Personally I would buy from small makers who craft quality goods since the internet makes that possible.

I’ve been wearing an American Giant Hoodie for about 15 years. There are signs of wear on the cuffs and at the pocket I used most frequently, but it is in great shape otherwise.

Torn Between Two BIFL-Recommended Hoodies
I'm late to the party, but I've found the American Giant and Flint & Tinder hoodies to be similar in quality. I have Absolutely Trashed 2 of each in the last \~4 years though, so I am currently on the search for something that is able to handle the abuse I put them through. For most people doing normal things, either is pretty solid.

I had the American Giant lightweight hoodie for years, really liked it as it's soft and just enough to keep me warm in Southern California. Will probably buy it again but got here from Google making sure there weren't any new competitors.

Seconded. Have a grey American Giant hoodie I bust out whenever it’s in the lower 60s or 50s F. Warm, heavy and well made. Zero complaints after wearing it for regularly since probably 2019.

Which Full-Zip Hoodie(s) Would You Recommend For Under $110?
Lots of recommendations for American Giant. I got a couple of their heavy zips last year, they seem nice but for some reason the navy blue one is much stiffer. Think of a rugby shirt that was air dried on a clothesline. Very stiff. The light blue one is the same construction but much softer. They recently went up substantially on their price and without the 20% discount I don’t think their worth it over an LL Bean heavy model or the Carhartt rain defender (unless the made in USA is important).

Which Full-Zip Hoodie(s) Would You Recommend For Under $110?
Check out American Giant. I've had one of their hoodies for about 6 years and it's still going strong. It's deceptively heavy, so it'll keep you warmer than your average hoodie. Also, unless something has changed since then, they make everything in the US if that's something you're looking for. It might be a little out of your price range, but it looks like they have a 20% off deal for first time buyers.

Most reliable and highest quality sweatpants/trousers brand?
I own several different brands for my sweatpants, ranging from American Giant, Patagonia, Fjallraven, & yes I will include Nike. For me, American Giant & Fjallraven make the thickest, most durable feeling sweatpants with yet the softest 100% cotton inner lining. I had never spent $100+ on a single pair of sweatpants before in my life, but I’m honestly glad I did because there is noticeable difference in quality, I appreciate items that last, & life is simply too short to not enjoy its finer things. Now I’m rambling about sweatpants on Reddit…what is my life 😅

Full zip hoodie that will actually last?
I've had good luck with Carhartt and American Giant. I don't love the AG material as much, because it's just way stiffer than I was expecting, reminds me more of a "duck" canvas jacket, but both have held up really well. If AG puts out a solid, saturated navy in their OG hoodie, I will snap it up, but the gray one I have is great.

American Giant hoodie has a lifetime warranty. My zipper broke after about 5 years and they sent me a new one no questions asked. They hold up very well. Even if they didn't they'd send you a new one if it wears.

Seconding this. Got my first heavyweight Classic Full Zip in black 10+ years ago. I've worn the crap out of it since the day I bought it. Finally starting to show some wear around the cuffs so got another one, exact same style/size/color. Put them side by side and it's the same hoodie. Get the AG Classic Full Zip. 100% worth it.

Full zip hoodie that will actually last?
What's the hoodie for? I mean if you're just wearing it like a normal person and not working construction or something, I have fucking Walmart hoodies that have made it 20 years. I have American Giant and Carhartt ones that are like new after 10. I don't know if they'll last forever, but at this point even the most expensive ones have cost me less than a dollar per month. That seems pretty good already, and I know I'm not getting rid of them anytime soon.

What purchase changed your habit?
Not the person you asked, but there are lot of potential anwser depend on a lot of personal factors. I am also working through a similar process myself. I would summarize it as buying fewer but much higher quality clothes. Most importantly they need to be made out of decent material and fit you well. I also started with good quality good year welted shoes. My $50 Kohls dress shoes and belts look like crap after a few months and where totally wore out in 6. I ended up buying some Thursdays and Allen Edmunds dress shoes I have now been wearing for years. Same goes for clothes, cheap dress shirts would shrink and loose their shape and look terrible. I started buy higher end used off of ebay/ market place for about the same price as the cheap stuff new. They look much nicer even after multiple wears. I personally like Charles Tywitt for shirts. But that will depend on what fits you correctly and what type of clothes you wear. For casual stuff I bought a few pairs of American made jean (american giant and dearborn dennim) I have been really happy with. Once again, got to find what fits you right and meets your need. Haven't bought new jeans in years. I haven't locked down. T shirts I like yet, but open to suggestions.

thank you for that. i just learned of the company. i was looking at dresses, but they didnt have a style i was in to. they had one i loved but i have so many in that style. though they are all crappy made..... if i need to replace one, i will try this brand. i want clothing made well to hold up and not look like a rag after a few washes. i sew clothing myself, i can say, its expensive to do it right. fabric has a grain, you must stay on the right grain when seaming or your clothing hangs like cheap clothing from a child labor camp. we do need more cotton fabric and stuff that lasts and stick to a good fit over a fast fashion change. our oceans and landfills get full of last years cast off of those cheap made short lived items.

American Giant Still Worth It? I've got on of there original pullover hoodies that finally needs replaced.
You must be very hard on your hoodies. I have about 25 American Giant front zip hoodies. They are pretty much all I wear during the colder weather. Each of them remains in pristine condition, no matter how dirty they get or how many times I wash them which is often. My only complaint about AG is that they run out of hoodies in colors that are outrageously popular like brown and mineral, way too quickly and don't restock

High quality sweaters and hoodies - suggestions?
Your budget is your budget, so for sweaters you are looking at deep discounts or secondhand. You can get great sweaters (Made in England, Made in Scotland, Made in Italy) secondhand for $50 and under if you know your measurements and are patient. I have multiple American Giant hoodies (as others have mentioned) that are YEARS old. I love them. They are a bit over $100 now. If you want a decent $50 hoodie get one from Uniqlo. I have two. They are fine. I don't care if they get shit on them when I cook. Or find something cool secondhand. People get pretty pure about synthetics, but a little polyester can help durability. I have a 90/10 Champion sweatshirt that's great. Paid $40 for it secondhand.

American Giant Mail Order
The clothes are wonderful, but I contacted them a week ago to ask about the order, and I wish that instead of my waiting until today like they asked, I had gone ahead and done another order of the same t-shirts. That way, they might still be in stock, I would have gotten what I wanted, and if I wound up receiving both orders, I could always return one for a refund. Lesson learned: if it’s a limited edition, order twice.

American Giant Mail Order
I really want to like them, but every order I have made was either delayed by weeks or something wasn't in the order and they didn't say anything until I asked where it was. It was always because something was out of stock, which they would then refund, but only after I had to ask. They always gave me a 25% off coupon for my next order, but I still ended up giving up on them. Their clothing quality is pretty decent though.

Looking for a spring/autumn jacket to last me 5+ years, somewhat on a budget. What worked for you in the past?
I've got the M-65 field coat (with removable liner) and the American Giant Classic Full Zip and love them both. The AG Classic Full Zip is my default spring/fall outer layer and often times a mid layer under the M-65 when it's really cold. I've worn the crap out of that thing for the last ten years and have been nothing but impressed. I'd burn through a standard hoodie every couple years so 10 and still going is amazing. Can't recommend it enough. The M65 is great, it's a lot heavier than the classic full zip even before I put the liner in but it's solid. Honestly, it's gotta be pretty bad out for me to wear the M65 instead of just layering up under the Full Zip. And, echoing another comment, it does look very military. I don't wear it nearly as much as the Full Zip but I've had mine for 20+ years and it's in great shape.

Yes it is true- quality clothes are harder to find.
I now source most of my clothing from thrift stores and go for quality items. My fave is American giant right now. Don't know how their newer stuff holds up though. I'm pretty minimalist when it comes to my aesthetic. I'm a tee shirt and jeans kind of gal. When it's sweater weather time I do go for more upscale look. I stick with natural fibers and no stretch 100% cotton jeans. Everlane has my favorite jeans. If you care for them the right way they will hold up. Sorry, my comment was kind of all over the place.

I’ve had mine for over 7 years and yes it fades but I’ve worn it almost daily. The cuffs also wear because, well, arms get used and rub on stuff a lot. I paid $12 to a tailor to have them repaired. I personally have never dried it in a dryer because I air dry all of my clothes to make them last longer, so it hasn’t shrunk. You really shouldn’t dry jackets or hoodies with zippers anyway because that causes them to get wavy.

I’ve cycled through about 4 of these over the last 8 years. Each time when I’ve brought it into their store and showed them frays etc. I’ve been able to just swap one from off the shelf, no cost. Obv I usually end up buying something else while there but I swear by this company for tshirts jeans and hoodies. Really solid stuff

I still have & wear a bunch of tees bought around 2013-14. Back then, if I remember right, they just had normal weight & heavy weight. The normal weight material is pretty thin, & a few of my tees have developed small holes in various places. I am pretty gentle on clothes & look after them. I kind of regret not getting all heavyweight tees as these have held up well. Pricing back then was reasonable & they shipped internationally at reasonable rates. The hoodies are still used, but the cuffs have frayed extensively. No personal experience with their recent product. Even thought the founders were rich kids at the time, they've done well with the brand & core mission, in my opinion.

This depends entirely on how hard you are on it, and how much you wash it. I have two AG hoodies that I wear 2-4 days a week, but only for "light duty" stuff (around the house, running errands, at kid sports events, etc). They still look almost new, even going on 5yo, and one of them may *never* have been washed. The other one has, and you can tell, but it still is in excellent shape. Compare that to a friend who basically lives in his. It's beat the hell, is extremely faded, has frayed cuffs and waistband, and looks basically beat up. I don't see that as a failure because it'll happen to any clothing that sees hard wear. I buy AG because they look pretty good and the fabric is nice, and they're American made. Not because they're BIFL.

The point is that they're made in the US. They support higher paid, American workers. Quality is generally better than Carhartt as well

Same, they’ve really tanked a lot of their quality with the fast fashion stuff, but their actual workwear is still solid. My black one ended up being a washed purple after 5 or so years in the sun. They do shrink up a bit over time, but like you said the price makes it a much better deal imo.

I now own 7 and love them! The zip up version was slimmer fitting than I thought, so I have mostly the pullover version.

I own a silly amount of American Giant clothing and I hear ya on the cost. I've had some good luck with their (infrequent) sales. Their premium slub tee shirts are the best undershirt I've ever owned. They also seem to send me a 30% coupon once or twice a year which def helps :)

The sweatshirt with zipper I bought years ago is holding up really well. Gotta take care of it. I never machine dry my American giant clothes...they get hung dried

Love ‘em. Been rocking AG for about 9 years now, my first one ended up getting frayed around the cuffs after about 6 years, it’s been relegated to garage work now, it’s replacement has been going great for about 3 year so far.

I've had one for a few years now and aside from the colour fading a little, it still looks good as new. Having said that, I live in Florida so it only comes out of the closet for about 3 months of the year.

I saw a similar thread a while back and decided to take the plunge- I bought a midweight AG hoodie over the summer. It was really nice! Then I looked in Amazon. (I know, the opposite of BIFL…) I was able to get both colors I wanted for $60 total. But, I really liked how the white draw string looked on the AG hoodie. I found a length of drawstring very similar to the AG one and swapped it out (local tailor assisted with sewing up the ends to look nice). I ended up with 2 hoodies that I LOVE for 3/4 the price of an AG hoodie, even after paying for the drawstring and tailor services.

I picked one up as a gift from a thrift store for $4. Ended up keeping it for myself because holy shit is this thing thick, comfortable, & durable. Mine came with a single droplet of bleach stained on the hood part but not a bad bargain for $4 total.

Per the website Carhartt is a cotton polyester blend and not American made, I haven't bought Carhartt so I can't speak to its quality but I have bought AG and have had their clothing for years and they look brand new. Granted I buy dark colors which I'm sure impacts that

I recently got a few myself and I really dig them. Just be aware that they shrink a good amount. If it’s snug or fits properly now I’d avoid drying it.

I’m wearing one right now that is 7 years old. I have an older one that is probably ~12 years old. I love them.

Mine is holding up pretty good. I've been wearing the midweight hoodie nearly daily for half the year going 4 years now.

I got a hoodie last February and just a few days ago noticed the piping by the zipper is fraying badly, this is good to hear — thank you! I'll probably just deal, but it's nice to have options if it gets worse.

They've been great about replacing t shirts too. I had the old t shirts with the tag on the back of the neck which was making holes in the anchor points of the tag after 5 washes. Sent in a photo and the order number, they sent me their new t shirt with the printed label. I will say that the dye they use is terrible. It fades after a few washes and makes the material look old. Stick with the hoodies. I don't know about the pants.

I haven’t followed the love or hate for AG. Three members of my family, including me, have AG sweatshirts or hoodies. They seem really well made, so I don’t anticipate needing the warranty soon, but I appreciate your post, just in case!

Greatest Hoodie Ever Made? Anyone have experience with this company? Seems like an amazing idea...
I normally wear a mens' xs, fitted too. American Giant doesn't make a size xs in men's. So I bought a women's small. Which, to me, feels like a men's xs, but I don't want to say this for sure. It fits me VERY well, like it was tailored for me. But, again, this was a women's xs, which is probably cut even smaller than a men's xs would be. I'm a short skinny guy if that helps. I'd say their fits are pretty accurate to whatever you'd normally wear. Also, no matter what your size is, the cuts on the entire site are fitted as well. If your skinny, it's possible the men's might be slightly boxy for you. It's hard for me to say with confidence since I don't wear a men's fit. I've also read many of the reviews on the site have stated that lengths of the sleeves aren't great for tall people, I can't comment on that myself. I'd say get both. You should probably just order a M and a L and return one or both if you don't like them. They have a great policy on returns. I've never returned anything to them, but they seem good about it, according to some reviews I've read. I remember seeing a thread somewhere that had a comment from American Giant themselves stating they were in the middle of making a tall line. The thread probably still exists somewhere. If you wanna know for sure, shoot'em an email. I've asked them stuff and they're great about responding. edit: here's that thread I mentioned. https://www.reddit.com/r/malefashionadvice/comments/3a1uoc/hey_mfa_bayard_winthrop_ceo_of_american_giant/
