Which Carry On is the Best?
I have a carry-on sized bag from American Tourister that I have had for 30-ish years. It has 4 wheels (ahead of its time when I got it), and hasn’t lost so much as a zipper. Not hard shell, so can’t comment on that. I have flown probably an average of 3-4 times a year during the time I’ve had it, plus it’s been thrown around on many road trips. I did buy a large hardshell bag to check from same brand a few years ago and it has held up okay. Just can’t comment on longevity quite yet since it’s only flown about 20 times.

Best bifl for bag in this style? A lot seem mass produced and poor quality
I have a great rucksack from American Tourister. Its strong, water resistant, easy to clean, and looks good. I've used it daily for years without wear and tear.

American Tourister for luggage
Yes! The Oysters are the pinnacle of durability. And most bags with the same design features--3 point latching, piano hinge, interlocking hard shells with a gasket--will be BIFL.

I need recommendations for luggage that lasts.
Late to the party, but what you want is not a particular bag, but a particular design--3-point latches (not zippers), a piano hinge, and a gasket between the shells. The two that we own are the Samsonite S'Cure and the American Tourister Tribus and they've been over a dozen international trips each. These design elements were pioneered on the Samsonite Oyster, which even at 40 years old is being sold on ebay because they're so durable. The original designed didn't have 4 wheels or a tsa lock so they're not in favor today, but they are still indestructable. The make models of the bags that have this design vary, but every few years Samsonite and/or American Tourister has them available in certain countries or the US. The current version I found quickly is the Samsonite Essens.

Can this be replaced?
I had a 10 yo really big suitcase with broken wheels (meaning I was just rolling on plastic at the end) but in perfect condition except that... I ordered a pack of wheels on Amazon, husband struggled to remove the original ones but it was really easy to install the new ones. Now, the wheels are reeally smooth and the suitcase is like new for less than 20€.

Can this be replaced?
This happened to me last year. When I got home I replaced all four casters. I looked everywhere but couldn’t find new (and sturdier) wheels that would fit. I found the matching casters on Amazon, but be careful because there are lots of different hole configurations for the screws, so make sure you get the right ones! Now it rolls like new!
