What was the best purchase you made this year?
Not sure which one is best for me yet tbh as I love all of my recent purchases. Ankarsrum mixer Cuisinart 14cup fp Lodge 7 qt dutch oven Lodge 12 inch skillet Lodge pie pan Also got an enamel 7 qt lodge Dutch oven but I don’t think it’s gonna last for decades.

What’s a small upgrade you made that ended up being way more impactful than expected?
I wouldn’t classify this as cheap but definitely BIFL. I bake all of our bread (bagels, slider buns, etc) and saved up for an Ankarsrum mixer. It’s the absolute best thing I own and I wish I had saved sooner. I can set the kneading speed and time and it will auto turnoff when it’s done.

BIFL Which Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer
Consider the Ankrasrum Assitent Much more durable. Use mine for cookie dough, pizza/bread and cakes. https://www.ankarsrum.com/us/product-category/stand-mixers/

Should I get a Stand mixer?
While I agree there are better options both of these are not it. The ankarsrum is great and so is the new ooni depending on what end goal is. Especially for dough making. If it's just to make cakes or light stuff kitchen aids can be fine. Mine is going on 20 years but don't use it for dough because it screams in pain.

Should I get a Stand mixer?
Also note that kitchen aid mixers aren’t the best option for breads and other doughs as the dough hook isn’t intended to be used at high speeds and the motor can burn out on thick dough. Ankarsrum and Bosch win in that category. I use my KA for cookies and cakes and my Ankarsrum for bread, pizza, and bagels, etc.

Should I get a Stand mixer?
***\*\*\* WARNING: UNPOPULAR OPINION BELOW \*\*\**** **Don't get a KitchenAid stand mixer.** The motor sits above the bowl. Two things happen: 1. The grease breaks down over time (this is the nature of all grease) 2. The seals wear over time (this is the nature of all seals) The result? Grease slowly and imperceptibly drips into your food. The short term result is that you and your family find yourselves sitting on the toilet more than usual. The long term result is cancer. I have worked on several of these machines and in every case there is oil behind the beauty ring and above the bowl position. That means that grease got into the bowl. Get an Ankarsrum.

What have you used the most at home these two years?
I have a bunch of the items everyone in the comments are mentioning. But I’d say my favorite BIFL purchase is my Demeyere stainless steel pans. Buy one pan at a time if you have to until all your old crappy ones are gone. They’re easy to clean because they have no rivets and I’ve used them almost every day for about ten years now. I also bake a lot so my best electronic kitchen devices are 1. A really high quality kitchen scale, and 2. Ankarsrum mixer

What are some actual BIFL kitchen items?
Used to be true…. I have a 20+ year old kitchen aid that’s rock solid I’ve burned through three modern ones (bigger beefier ones to boot!) since 2015. Of you wanted bifl mixer and are willing to save up Ankarsrum is top tier quality for a mixer.

kitchenaid alternatives that aren't hot garbage
I've had my kitchen aid mixer for years without issues. I'm not saying they are perfect and without flaws (there's a whole bunch of people who sell parts to essentially upgrade them and to repair them). But, more often than not, people use them incorrectly, and end up stripping the gears (which is a shitty plastic piece but very replaceable) by mixing at too high a speed for certain dough's or by overfilling with ingredients. If this was the case for you, even a commercial mixer will have issues unless you learn what it can take. But regardless, take it to a repair shop first as it may be a simple inexpensive fix. If you still need a rec, I've only heard good things about Ankarsrum (never used it though so do some research), every bakery I worked at had a large Hobart mixer. They make smaller at home ones, and we certainly had a few at said bakeries that held up very well. I forget the models but it was a countertop kitchen aid type.

Alternative to KitchenAid Professional Mixers? Or repair advice?
We got one for our wedding and it was significantly lower quality than I imagined. I think only a few models are actually BIFL. I kind of wish we had gotten the ankarsrum mixer

Alternative to KitchenAid Professional Mixers? Or repair advice?
America’s Test Kitchen does a good rundown here. https://youtu.be/MuHAAGV-f30?si=szQen6X9xOlkCYgz I’ve had an Ankarsrum for about a year now, and the difference in build quality, strength, noise, and capacity to my prior KitchenAid is profound. I don’t really like the additional bowl-whisk set, I used the roller and scraper for everything.

Kitchenaid blenders for Canadians
Okay weird suggestion, but if you’re going to maybe spend money on a vitamin this is a neat alternative. The Ankarsrum stand mixer has a blender attachment, which seems to be pretty good. Obviously if you wouldn’t also benefit from all the other features of the Ankarsrum, this isn’t a good option for you, but at least this way if you’re buying a good motor (which is essentially all a blender is), you can use it for a lot more stuff.

BIFL Mixer: KitchenAid vs Ankarsrum
Really depends on use case. An Ankarsrum is a bread specialist. If you’d be happy for it to be great at larger batches of bread dough but somewhere between “finicky” and “more trouble than it’s worth” for other mixing tasks, it’s a great choice. If you don’t already have one, a hand mixer may be a good supplement if you want something that’s easier for occasional whipping, small batches, etc. A KA is more of a versatile jack of all trades, master of none. It won’t perform as well with bread, especially big batches, but it can do at least a decent job at pretty much any mixing task. It also has the biggest ecosystem of attachments. Everything that you read online about KAs being totally different than they were 20 years ago is pretty overstated if not just totally untrue. I think the bigger issue is that many people nowadays don’t know how to use them correctly and ruin them trying to knead dough on speed 6…

Stay away from all kitchenaid products
Wrong. For the best mixer under $1000 that's BIFL, go with the Ankarsrum. Made in Sweden.

Stay away from all kitchenaid products
For a BIFL mixer go to Ankarsrum, or possibly Bosch Universal. My mixer was originally lablelled Magic Mill, now called Ankarsrum is now 25 years old. It's solid and has been making our family's bread all these years. My typical batch is 5 loaves of 100% whole grain bread. I've also had my Whisper Mill (now Wondermill) grain mill nearly 26 years.

My 1996 Kitchenaid stand mixer has finally failed. Need a recommendation.
For bread making, get something made specifically for dough, like a Bosch stand mixer. I’ve repaired two kitchen aid mixers, I love them, but for making multiple loafs of bread a week they are not up to the task. My Bosch mixer makes better bread and never bogs down. I thought it was going to be a splurge but now it is a necessity. If you want something a bit fancier the Ankarsrum is phenomenal. Ooni also just launched a new spiral mixer, the Halo Pro that looks amazing. For bread there are much better options than a kitchen aid. If you just do a little bread and lots of other stuff, you really can’t replace it with anything else tho.

Electrolux Ankarsrum Assistent. Models go from 1940-present. Most attachment fit all models and can be bought used or brand new. Easy to repair with endless help online on forums. Mine is N10 (1978-1986).
They're made in Sweden 1,5 hours from where I live. I already have a mincer that came with my machine when I bought it second hand for a steal $80. I bought the open box one on the picture for my mother who has a N21. Super easy to know what fits on a page on their website https://www.ankarsrum.com/kompatibilitet/ There are so, so many attachment I don't know if there is a need to buy another machine. The mixer on my picture is the old model though, and the new models don't fit, so breaking it would be a hard blow. New Ankarsrum models are $600 but the older ones can be bought for a lot less and the model numbers are etched into a metal plate so you can know which attachment fits before you buy.

My 1996 Kitchenaid stand mixer has finally failed. Need a recommendation.
I haven’t used it for anything than making bread and it’s been a DREAM. However, because of many comments like yours I kept my Kitchen Aid for baking non bread stuff and making frosting, just need to service it with my MrMixer kit. I can totally believe that each have their strengths. I also wouldn’t give up my Ankarsrum for anything, I’ve made 9 loaves in a day with it.

Ankarsrum. They’re a Swedish brand and a new machine comes with a 7 year warranty. Nothing comes with a warranty like that anymore. The thing is an absolute beast and something you’ll end up passing down to your kids.

Depends what you use it for and how large your batches are. I like my ankarsrum but I mostly do bread, so not a model to recommend to everyone.

Unpopular Opinion: "BIFL" as an excuse for overspending
Interesting perspective to see BIFL as a shopping list for wants vs. needs. I've only used it as another data point when shopping for something that I need to replace. So many of the product review sites also just seem to be marketing. It's hard to find real, honest reviews for quality, durable products that hold up to constant use (e.g. a dishwasher or washing machine). Subreddits and sites for repairing things I am buying also provide great information. What product is going to have replacement parts at reasonable prices and be relatively easy to fix? Our washing machine is 18+ years old and will likely be our next appliance to replace. I just did some maintenance on it because it is a quality product, and I prefer to keep it until I have no choice but to replace it. It is an LG Tromm, and I'll likely stick with LG, but I have also researched Speed Queen. LG has seemed to maintain their quality at a more reasonable price than Speed Queen. My KitchenAid mixer is also coming to its end days. KitchenAid has seemed to sacrifice quality in their recent products. So, I will likely replace it with an Ankarsrum mixer when the time comes.
