Is there anything you're convinced is "the cheaper the better"?
Honestly, if you're in the US, it's not complicated. Buy a Honda Civic/Accord or a Toyota Corolla. A Prius if you want electric. I don't know why anyone buys anything else.

1998 Toyota t-100. Paid 6000 in 2013. Worked it to hell for the last 13 years. Still going strong and could probably sell it for close to the same amount

In an age of things designed to be replaced, what currently-produced 1) trucks, and 2) cars come closest to BIFL?
Yeah the Prius 2nd gen and 3rd gen can be had for peanuts and are extremely reliable. They are the best bang for the buck when you factor initial cost, and operating costs.
