  Depends. Consumer grade work laptops are absolutely amazing compared to even 10 years ago. Apple Silicon Macs are just better with much better battery life and life span. And no, 99% of people don't care about upgrading HW when it's *this* powerful. A brand new MacBook Air will last anyone 5+ years with no issues and probably closer to 10.

  Smart Watch/ Fitness Tracker

  There are no “buy it for life” pieces of technology in this category. Whoop is probably the closest option for you. Apple Watch or some of the higher end Garmin devices would be next, depending on what ecosystem you want to be a part of. No watch can track weight. That gets back to the ecosystem aspect of things (all of the ones above that I mentioned are capable of this)

  What's the best way to buy digital music for life?

  You can purchase music for download on iTunes and it’s DRM free. My only issue with it is it’s compressed AAC format and not lossless. I do like Apple Music service because I can add my own files and it will stream to my devices.

  Lots of Apple 20W plugs and 2 meter USB-C cables for every room in the house and one of each for work, plus extra cables for our cars. A couple of portable power banks as well for when we’re out and about and not tethered to power.

  Same I used the og one I bought with my iPhone 12 5 years ago until I finally upgraded a couple months ago. I’ve only ever had the best luck with the Apple brand cables, I feel like any generic brand ones have always ended up dying on me or not charging very fast. The ones in my car and purse did fray a couple times, but that was because they were put through the wringer in those spots 😂

  IEMs with a usb c output is basically the same as using a dongle. They do the exact same thing. Although separate dac dongles will likely perform better + you can use them for other headphones too, and you won’t be taking up a usb c port on your laptop. If you go with a dongle, the apple one is one of the best ones, in fact it performs much better than many dacs, the only downside being its limited power output. It will be fine for basically all IEMs tho. Even the eu version will be ok for IEMs. Also avoid getting kz IEMs

  Why do charging cables die so easily?

  Those Apple cables that came with the phone would fray and expose wires all the time. I swapped over to magnetic cables from Amazon and don’t have to worry about junk getting in the charge slot anymore, plus 360* rotation. Had the previous set for like 7 years and only swapped them about a year ago to 240w magnetic cables or I’d still be using them. I could never go back to regular charging cables again.

  I've been using magsafe for my personal devices for 2 and a half years now, exclusively. However, I charge many devices for work all the time and there I'm using some standard old USB-C cables that were included in the package and never had to throw away a single one. Often, those devices are being used *while* they are being connected to the cable, again, no issues.

  There is a fourth option - you bought IEMs with removable, and therefore replaceable, cables. If you will only ever use these with a USB-C source, you can just buy a cable with a USB-C termination and continue using the IEMs you have (I have the Linsoul Tripowin Zonie). If you're likely to switch back and forth from USB to 3.5mm sources, then the Apple USB-C adapter is probably your best bet.

  Have a look at the /r/iem community. Adapters are the way to go- do a little reading in the iem sub and get a 10-20$ DAC. Those will almost always be better thatn built in headphone jacks because smartphone manufacturers cheapen out on those components anyway. If you are not in EU, just get the Apple dongle. It's great for almost all basic headphones. The EU one is capped by some local regulations and delivers less power so it will be much more quiet than the non-EU version.

  I just got these for my partner and he was disappointed. He had the XM4s and used them daily at work, and he said the XM5s have significantly worse noise cancellation. He swapped them out for the Apple AirPods 3, which he’s really happy with. Caveat that he works in construction, so noise cancellation was his number one priority. If your primary goal is sound quality, there might be better options. But if you want the best noise cancellation, he said the AirPods 3 blew them out of the water.

  I live in a city and use AirPods Pro 3 in active noise cancelation (almost) every night.  One downside is that when the earbuds lose charge in the morning, they make a sound to alert me of low battery. Sometimes that wake me up.  I use the noise canceling mode on these with conversation awareness ON just in case my kids need me.

  I have no idea if it's in the comments or not, but going the opposite way, especially with an iPhone is the smarter way to go. You get major updates for at least 5 years, and security updates for even longer. Android is a mixed bag depending on manufacturer and what not, I love my Galaxy phones from Samsung. However, Apple really does have something with their own hardware and software. You may not care about all the tools and what not on the newest phones, in that case, don't get the pro/max models. Just get one that will have the storage space you need from the current generation. They have pretty constantly done this since at least the iPhone 4. Going with the newest model with an iPhone is the best way to get the best longevity from owning one.

  Last year I bought a refurbished iPhone SE from I think 2020 on Amazon. Works like new and all current apps work on it. For my photos, when my storage starts to approach the limit, I DL them from the cloud onto my PC, back them up and then delete from all devices to restore the space available.

  I know you don't really want to buy a new phone because you said cheap, but Apple supports each new iPhone model for 7 years of iOS security updates. If you buy an old phone it's either not supported anymore or it won't be supported for much longer. For longevity's sake, your best bet is to probably just get the new iPhone 17.

  If you’re looking for an iPhone, I’d suggest buying an iPhone 17. It’s a great base model and will be supported for a number of years. Battery replacements are relatively cheap so in a few years just do that to extend its life. Sometimes the cheapest thing in the long term means a bit more upfront.

  I have an iPhone SE 3 that I haven't had any issues with. I got it used for under $200. When it breaks or becomes obsolete, I'll upgrade to the iPhone 16e (I think is what it's called? Whatever their cheapest one is). That should happen in a year or two. That's just how it is with technology like this these days – it will become obsolete eventually. I think upgrading your phone every 3-5 years to a refurbished model and paying $200 cash each time isn't a big deal? I'm also on a 5GB Tello plan that's $14/month. That's enough data for Maps and Music while I'm driving around, which is all I use data for. So that's another way to save money on a smartphone – don't get an expensive data plan.

  Buy the newest iPhone 17 so you don't need to switch as often. The iPhone 10 or xr is newer than your phone 7 by 3 years. So in another 3 years you will face this same problem again. Pretty sure you don't. Your phone is 10 years old. You should get a new one every 5 years average, maybe 7 years, definitely not 10 years.

  FYI Apple causes phones to become obsolete. I have a 4, 7, 8 Plus and an iPhone 12 Pro Max. I keep them for backup. I'm now having trouble with the 8 plus not connecting to App Store. And canNOT upgrade the iOS. Updating your phone every time an upgrade comes out is something to do for people are security conscious. It's been decades since Ive had a BlackBerry or Android so I cannot speak to those. I am not recommending this but I have found for me the best thing was to get a phone that was a couple years old refurbished from my cellular carrier. I have limited funds so that's what I need to do. You can store your photos on dropbox or the cloud or whatever. Same with documents and other things I keep everything backed up and dropbox in another place as well. But I always need to buy more than the standard hard drive space just because I want the phone to work smoothly. Best to you. These cellular companies and phone manufacturing companies have us by the short hairs. For now ... but that will change.

  Apple Watch. I've always been an android user and was using a Fitbit before it died after 6 years of service. The insane amount of data I get from this watch, integrations, and quality feel is insane. I've got it paired to my work cell and it might convince me to get my own iPhone. IB4: Before anyone says so, I'm in IT and part of the department that would be monitoring these phones. Regardless, I'm mindful of what's on my work phone and I don't do any sketchy socializing.

  That’s a good point, people love to complain when things go downhill but don’t say much when they improve. I’d say Apple’s laptops have actually gotten better again lately. Way better battery life, cooler design, the M-series chips are wild. LEGO too! The sets now are insanely detailed compared to what we had as kids. Even cars like Toyota and Hyundai have really stepped up their game over the years

  I still have the ipad 6, which I’m pretty sure is the last one with a headphone jack. I pretty much use it instead of a TV, and I will continue to use it until it’s no longer viable. ETA they make similar iPhone to dual headphone splitters for the older gen devices, but then how will I keep the thing charged? They die so fast. I often use it for entertainment on 5hr+ train rides when traveling.

  In x86 days I’d agree with you but what Apple has done with ARM is pretty much universally praised. Other companies are starting to catch up but it’s not close yet. Some are more powerful but none hit the insane efficiency Apple is getting. I’d also say while I personally prefer MacOS to Windows (used to run a hackintosh) Linux is finally becoming a very strong daily driver. I do still have complaints though, like I wish I could still use an external GPU and their increases of RAM and storage are insanely priced. Though the base model Mac Mini is probably the best value computer around for price/performance. They have stellar long term support too. Am I currently working on a Linux x86 build just because I need CUDA for some work stuff. eGPU was great while it lasted.

  Just pay for the AirPods Pro. It’s more expensive up front but in the long run it’ll be cheaper, since you likely won’t be replacing twice a year. For reference I’ve been using them for 4+ years now and I’ve only replaced them when I’ve lost them.

  What is the equivalent of "Apple removed 3.5mm jack" of your favorite products ?

  Build quality. Business class laptops from Lenovo and Dell also have a pretty good build quality, but they're not quite where Apple is. Battery life. What's another high performance laptop with a 24 hour battery life? My ~1 year old Lenovo will last about 4 hours without needing to charge. Form factor. Where can you get a premium small laptop that's not a low-spec POS? The Lenovo X1 is about your only choice, but that maxes out at 32GB of RAM, and you're very limited on CPU choice. Screen. Most laptops don't have nearly as nice of a screen, or as high of a resolution as the MacBooks do. Plus they're bright enough to use outside easily. Sure other laptops have higher resolution available (I have a lenovo P16s for work that has a beautiful screen, but it's a huge laptop and not a form factor I want for my personal laptop). It's not Windows. Windows 11 sucks. And it keeps getting worse. Linux has gotten way better, but it's still not great for the average user. Mac OS isn't perfect, but it generally does just work, and it tends to run much better than Windows does on comparable hardware.

  I’ve tried a bunch of earbuds through the years, from Xiaomi, to Jabra, to Beats. But the only ones that have lasted me more than a year are mi AirPods Pro 2. I’m on year 3 with them and debating whether I should upgrade to the Pro 3. But the 2 still work great so it’s hard to justify.

  I use AirPod pros for 6-10hrs a day. I work in beverage distribution so I’m out in the rain regularly. I’ll wear a hat but periodically they get wet. I absolutely have to take them off and let them charge periodically and the battery life is about 4-6hrs depending on what I’m doing with them. But they’ll make it through the day!

Sure I knew it existed, but getting to actually experience it personally for the first time was a such a joy for a solid 2 months after I got the phone.

  I wanted to dislike them cause they’re so generic and corporate and whatever else, but when I lost my first pair (which i loved) and tried two other wireless buds (which i did not love half as much) and went back to Airpods pros, I decided it was time to admit they are JUST very good. I don’t think anything beats them right now that I’m aware of. The battery life is great, they connect to an iPhone or Mac seamlessly, every part of it recharges fast, case beeps on Find My if you need to, noise cancelling is quite good (heavily relied on for planes and trains). Small and comfortable enough that I’ve fallen asleep with them in as a side sleeper. It still feels so lame shilling for a major company’s product this hard cause they don’t need the marketing help at all. But they just are the gold standard right now.

  If you are on an Apple phone, give AirPod pros a try. First, and most importantly for you, nobody is mentioning AppleCare. $15 a year and they will replace them every time they fail, or even if you lose one. Even in your hard use case. If you are not on an Apple phone, you may still want to give them a try just because of the AppleCare. I don’t know, but I hear they’re kind of a pain in the ass in other ecosystems. The rest of my thoughts. They are my favorite pair of earbuds, because of features they offer that make them a GREAT complete package. For instance, automatically pausing playback when I take them out of my ear. The spatial audio is decent, and the volume adjustment for noise is very very good, I never even notice it happening. I like that I can nod my head to answer a call, it’s useful. Things like that make them all around winners for me. The noise canceling is much better than anything else I’ve tried, although I hear that Sony is better. And it is supposed to be even better on the 3s, but I haven’t tried those. I have had a couple of pairs of ear pods that have significantly better sound, and I have had lots and lots that have significantly worse sound. In that aspect, they are an B plus.

  Earbuds are not something I consider BIFL. I don't have much to compare. I bought a set of Airpods Gen 2 about five years ago and a second set about four years ago. I use them with my iPhone 12 mini and iPad Gen 9. You can use one side at a time and rotate through the case to charge them, but I bought a second set so I can wear both sides and go pretty much indefinitely by switching back and forth. I have not successfully paired them with my Lenovo T450 with Win 7 Pro. I think that's a Windows problem. I expect that to sort out when I replace my laptop in three or four years. People's ears are shaped differently. I find my buds fit securely. They don't stay in if I try to sleep with them but otherwise they stay in. Sound quality is good. I get about four hours of use from a full charge of the buds and days with the cases. I'm not sure how long they can manage as I never miss an opportunity to charge. Thus the two sets. My older pair are five years old. No deterioration. I don't know how much longer they will last. I don't expect BIFL, just quality.

  Sweat kills wireless ear buds. I’m a cyclist, and have a pair of original AirPod Pros that started doing weird things after a couple years when any kind of noise cancellation was turned on (either full noise cancellation or transparency mode), but they’re fine when NC is switched off. I use that set solely for workouts now; got a new set of AirPod Pro 2s when they came out and use those for my day-to-day.

  I have to say, I don't miss the 3.5mm plug. Airpods Pro are the headphones I dreamt about for so long. I can vividly remember being on the train with my Minidisc and thinking/daydreaming that someday my Sennheiser in ear earbuds would be wireless. It's 16 years later and I have them and they are even better than I thought.

  Apple maintains battery life pretty well, but the sound quality is nothing to write home about. The bsoe over the ear are my top pick if you're willing to compromise. Regardless, there is no true BIFL option in almost any modern electrical.

  Buying good headphones

  The Truthear GATE IEMs sound shockingly good (especially if you put a \~3db lowpass shelving filter at 180hz using equalizer software) and the mic is decent enough for gaming. For recording dialogue, the old wired Apple Earpods have a shockingly good microphone. Much better than any lav I've heard under $50.

  Yeah transparency mode on the AirPods Pro works wonders. It’s like you’re not wearing them. I also have experience with the last gen Sony earbuds, their transparency mode is almost as good as with the AirPods there’s just a tiny bit of ambient noise reduction. I don’t know if the transparency mode on the current gen is better. But even if it’s the same it would make for a more than adequate second option.

  AirPod Pro. I use them when I mow my lawn with a gas powered lawnmower, and I can hear with no problem. Also can talk on the phone if I need to on a walk or sitting outside, no issues at all. They actually work so well on calls I won't talk on the phone any other way.

  The only downside to the mocha master imo is you cannot set it to brew at a particular time. I use apple so I bought an eve energy smart plug so it can be set to turn on at a certain time or if I forget to turn it off after I leave for work I can turn it off.

  Why did we accept that security cameras need monthly fees to work properly?

  I bought a ReoLink NVR and a Mac Mini The NVR was compatible with my existing Dahua cameras and I’ve since added some ReoLink cams too. The NVR has 24/7 recording to a 2TB drive I run Scrypted and HomeAssistant then got chatGPT to do some clever stuff so that the cameras show up on my Apple Home app as HKSV devices. With iCloud + that I already pay for, I get 10 days recording on each camera. It only records what you tell it to though (motion detection, people/pet/parcel detection and you can set it per camera). I could technically cancel iCloud+ and still access recordings with the reolink app but I prefer to have both and I pay for iCloud+ anyway. HA also talks to my Shelly devices for shutter control, lighting control and it links with my actual alarm via a virtual alarm, and I can hook up the camera’s sensors to the dumb alarm and use them to trigger it. Very smart!

I would guess that since you're on Mint that's probably a pretty cheap plan already, but maybe check if your University has student discount arrangements with any carriers. May campuses also have on-site tech shops that \*sometimes\* offer student pricing on devices that may be unlocked. Another option, if you have any employment role as part of your PhD program would be to ask if there's any budget to support tech purchases if it's absolutely necessary for you to do your work. Final thought is just that these things are not designed to last for more than 3-4 years. Whether that's planned obsolescence in action (read something recently about Google Pixels designed to kill the "smart charging" after 200 cycles - Apple has been plagued by claims of battery drain, bandwidth throttling, and apps disabled after mandatory system updates) or just the limitations of the parts (batteries gonna age), that's the way it goes. As a result, I think whatever you do paying for device repair/replace insurance is basically a necessity nowadays. I hate that it's whatever $7-10/mo or $100 year, just to pay a $100 deductible to replace it, but in the last 3 years since replacing my wife and my phones we've both had to replace them once. So we've paid about $1000 in insurance/deductible vs. $1600 in replacement (phones totally bricked - not just a cracked screen or battery failure). The math is a little better if you factor in the payoff amounts of the devices at the time of replacement (if we'd just swapped to a new phone we would have had to pay off the $500 and $200 respectively left at the time of replacement, too, plus you have activation fees instead of insurance deductibles - so a lot of it is a wash). Anyway: I'd get the protection plan.

  to boil it down, the phone that will last the longest is the newest phone. So in general I would recommend getting a newest gen phone and treating it carefully. Get one with the biggest battery to extend your time until needing to get the battery replaced. That said, you can cheap out a bit and get by. Apple started a program that makes it somewhat easy-ish to get genuine parts for phones after iPhone 12 (I think) so I would go absolutely no older than that. The 3rd gen iPhone SE is pretty barebones, using older and simpler tech (Touch ID, single camera, etc) which I would expect to be more durable, and has the same chipset as the iPhone 13, so I would expect at least a few more years of software updates, possibly even until ~2030. Slap a good screen protector and case on it and you’re set for a total of like $300 maybe?

  The iPhone 16 is far tougher than my iphone 11, 8, and 6, and what ever the second gen was. I've dropped the 16 multiple times face down, once was on a boulder and the glass barely scuffed. No crack, just a scuff which is normally invisible except under specific conditions. I still haven't bought a case, just a magnetic Pop Socket. In comparison, my 8 got a hairline crack at some point with a case, and I have no idea how. The iphone is definitely overpriced, but they aren't making it worse, it is slowly improving in minor ways. That's the biggest issue for me, the changes from generation to generation are very minor. 6 to 8 was very small, and I changed phones because the 6's battery was crapping out after two years. Same reason for switching to the 11, though I thought there would be a decent leap at 12, but no impressive changes were made, so I waited. I finally got the 16 because I was running out of storage, data through my port wasn't working, and the battery was finally getting worse. The battery lasting that long is impressive, 5 years versus 2. The 16's battery seems even better, I normally charge it only to 80% and have around 30% by the end of the day, the camera is also noticeably better. That's very important since it's my only camera. iPhone improves three things: battery life, glass strength, and camera quality. It's not gee whiz wow stuff, but they're probably the most important things to improve.

  For university I absolutely agree with a MacBook Air, a second hand or refurb one will be even better value. I thought I was productive onon Windows before (Windows + Arrow key) but Spotlight and the built in multi touch gestures (additional features can be unlocked in settings) with workspaces are just way better on MacOS (I don’t know if gestures are better in windows now because it’s just an spyware /adware OS now). Then you can super charge it with Raycast or Alfred (Raycast being my preference), Rectangle, Karabiner Elements etc. I’m so much faster at navigating around by Mac than Windows now with just shortcuts alone. Also student discount for MacBooks is a must! My best friend is still rocking my 2015 MacBook Pro, my wife my MacBook Air M1, and I’ve got the M3 Max MBP for work (still use Windows version of Excel via Parallel) and M4 Air for commute and travel. That said, my next laptop will likely be a framework as I don’t plan on upgrading my MacBooks in a while (I wanted my M3 to last me 10 years) and I want to play around with Linux, especially with Steam games becoming more available now thanks to the Steamdeck - I think that’s the only truly BIFL option.

  A MacBook if you can afford it. For the battery life alone it’s worth it. You don’t need to upgrade frequently. I still run an old M2 and it’s solid. I like the air for portable over the pro. Otherwise framework or system76 make amazing repairable laptops. Any enterprise laptop with reasonable specs will also do. Pick them up second hand on eBay or similar site. Dont get a laptop to draw on. They all suck. Buy the cheapest Wacom you can and use that. Alternatively, see if you can use an iPad Pro instead of a laptop and go with that.

  I’ve had many of the pixels, from 2-7. They just feel like a disposable phone to me. Every single one of them except for the 3 started having weird glitches after 1 year. Then you go to trade it in and it’s worth nothing.  I switched to apple … i hate the ecosystem (nothing actually “just works” 100%), but the hardware is solid and the apps are a lot more polished. I think it’s the way to go.

  The charging block that came with my Ipod 20+ years ago. It’s the big bulky one Apple sells that has the interchangeable plugs for international travel.

  +1 for Apple refurbished. They're like hidden gems. Same quality and you save a ton. Sadly overall quality of Apple products has decreased over the years but refurbished is still the way to go. I have an old MacBook Pro from 2010ish that I've dropped, spilled on, stepped on...you name it. Worked fine until a spill hit the power connection and it sparked, popped, smoked, and died. Before that I feel like you could have ran it over with a tank and it would have kept running.

  Most legit places that sell refurbished computers also sell it with a full warranty. Only buy from places that offer that. I don't know much about the refurbish world, but I do know that Apple for instance sells refurbished computers with a 1 year warranty.

  As others have recommended: Apple refurbished. It’s not only about the device or price, it’s the support and amount of years of updates you will get out of them, and working like when they were new. That’s the best advantage of an any electronic device: length of support.

  That's not universally true. If you buy from Apple or the Lenovo Outlet for example you'll get a mint condition true refurb. If you buy from a random Amazon or eBay store all bets are off

  I can’t speak for all refurbished products, but I’ve been buying my Apple devices from the Refurbished section of their website since 2007 and they have always been like new. Apple does a thorough refurbishment process and offers the same 1 year warranty as on their new devices so look for a similar policy if buying refurbished elsewhere.

  Ipad charger, good quality

  Do you still have the Apple cord from when you bought the ipad? If so how is it holding up. I have usually had better luck with any USB cord that has a nylon braided sheath around it. If I was having the trouble you were having with cables then I would probably just bite the bullet and buy the Apple cable. Or an Anker cable at the very least.

  Right now my ipad was bought in 2018 or 19 and I may have to cave and get a new one because the charging port has connection issues and apparently cant be fixed. Absolutely nothing else wrong with it. My iphone mini, 2021, I think, it is also having a little bit of charging port issue, but figure I can get another year out of it, but damn I like the fingerprint scan and HATE the face unlock, hoping I can hold out til fingerprint comes back or I may need to go to a google phone or something. But seriously, the reason I spend on apple is longevity and support foe old operating systems for a reasonable period of time. But I am kind of a use it til it breaks for everything, I mean if I get another 3 years out of something I am saving the price of a replacement every decade (yeah I am old, but a new car, a new laptop, a new ….. adds up.

  I’ve been an iPhone owner for awhile and your goal has always been my personal philosophy. I tend to get 3-4 years out of my phones, 5 of tablets, and 7 of laptops, and 12 of custom PCs. I’ve owned the 4s, 6s, 10s max, and 14 pro max. The years between the phones were 4, 3, and 4. I plan on the 14 pro max lasting at least 5 years and I’ve maintained the AppleCare plus to ensure that happens. In addition to saving on buying my tech outright and avoiding the scams that carriers “offer” to lock you into high monthly rates ($80-100/month), I use Mint mobile to cut that cost too. I only need the 20gb/month plan and pay $300 once a year for pretty decent service. “Unlimited” is available for $400 a year.

  I am breaking the cycle!! I bought my iPhone 15PM when it came out. I usually upgrade every other year, and I went from the 14 to the 15 for the USB-C. The appeal and shine of “new” is gone. Might be my age, might be my fear of the economy. My current phone is still a powerhouse and I don’t intend to upgrade until this thing dies. Besides, the innovations of the upgrade cycle just aren’t there anymore.

  What are some of the best products/brands you love splurging on?

  Less expensive things: Icebreaker Anatomica lightweight merino wool boxers. Bombas merino wool stretchy socks. Merino wool micro weight anything, really. Smell resistant, soft, temperature regulating, etc. Organic produce, dairy and eggs. Moderately expensive: Apple products. Work gives me a new MacBook Pro every few years, and the interoperability of it with the iPhone, AirTags, and Apple Watches makes it worthwhile to put our household on Apple stuff. FindMy is great to keep track of the kids, luggage, cars, etc. It’s pricey, but it just works. Expensive: A Rolex Explorer (sport watch/casual) and a JLC Duo Face (dress watch). Gorgeous, will last a lifetime with regular service. My only luxury purchases, but no one notices or cares. I just love their simple beauty. Not a product: Recreational travel. Life’s not about stuff. Nobody gives a shit. Memories matter. You really do buy them for life. What I never spend on: First class seats, premium credit cards, luxury cars (all Toyota), designer clothes and shoes, private school tuition.

  What are some of the best products/brands you love splurging on?

  Quality blender is up there for me too, I am a Blendtec guy but Blendec or Vitamix, either way, if you use a blender regularly it makes a huge difference. I also have the Dyson hair dryer, I got a deal on one of the refurbished models with a coupon, seemed like a ridiculous purchase but that thing is really good. Doubly ridiculous because I really only have a beard to blowdry but a damp neck is not a good thing if you didn't know. Since you mentioned Dyson - Their vacuums are pretty good but in the end I'm not a huge fan, I think bagless is inferior, but a great vacuum is a real convenience, not a fun one but it makes life easier. I recently bought a Sebo D4 and that thing is next-level. Zojirush water boiler/dispenser. I like electric kettles but in the USA with our 120VAC they're slow. The Zojirushi dispensers will hold water at 208º and they last forever. Older models had gaskets that required occasional replacement but they sell the parts, my current one with the double-wall design has been on pretty much for ten years straight except when I unplug it to go on vacation. Great convenience appliance for coffee and tea lovers, especially for someone who does a French press every morning. Great kitchen tools, knives, cookware, utensils. They're all just hunks of metal in the end so anything good quality is buy it for life. Apple electronics, although laptops, phones, etc. can't really be BIFL. Porsche car - Not necessarily the cheapest to keep for life but they claim 70% of the cars they've made are still on the road. Not brand-specific but decent home audio, especially a 5.1 or better surround setup for movie and TV. Even YouTube documentaries sound so much better, you get spoiled by great audio, I find even narration lacks impact and presence when I'm listening to a podcast through earbuds vs. watching on my surround system. And while audiophilia gets people spending ridiculous amounts of money with the proliferation of cheap consumer electronics the last few decades you don't have to spend much to get a way better experience. Bicycle stuff, but not really brand specific and I don't go as crazy as a lot of enthusiasts, but don't mind spending on good bikes, good gear and good accessories. Ekornes Stressless furniture - very comfortable to me, IMO even most expensive furniture isn't really comfortable or ergonomic, a lot of it is plush, superficially comfortable but not supportive and wrecks your neck and back if you spend a lot of time in it. Similarly, Herman Miller Aerons for office duty. Travelpro luggage - most of their lines aren't expensive enough to be a real splurge, but very nice and durable, way better than cheap luggage some of which seems to be single-use these days.

  Here’s the thing. They last, they sound amazing, the NC is beautiful and you can get them WITH AppleCare + at Costco for like 178. Yea only Apple can fix them but at least it’s a stupid easy experience and no BS to dance around with. Knowing your resistance to the ecosystem(like I once had) the Nothing headphones are a favorite of an audio engineer friend of mine. Good luck.

  Well good lord, I tried most Android earbuds--hit or miss. Bose Quiet Comfort---died one month out of warranty--never will buy anything Bose again. Anker still working but phone quality was lame. Sennheiser had some microphone problem. I would have gotten Sony but I did go Apple which work as directed in almost all situations---with android, with the TV, laptop (non apple--Microsoft)........but yes I have an Iphone Pro Max 15--I do digital video--so it was a necessity. I must say, with all my resistance with apple, they have been my best earbuds.

  Gentle alarm clock without a subscription

  Just throwing in an alternative. If you’re in the Apple ecosystem, a HomePod is relatively cheap and while it won’t display the time it will tell you the time if asked (I like this because I dislike glowing lights at night). It has a pleasant chime for alarms and is pretty great at playing music/sounds to help you fall asleep. So not sold as an alarm clock it has most all the features.

  Apple AirPod Max changed the way I travel and go to the gym. If I lost or broke them I’d buy a new pair immediately. Blundstone boots, great for working in the yard, great for traveling and walking a lot, cute as an every day shoe. AnyDay microwave dishes, we use these to cook with almost every day - expensive but so worth it. We cook rice in it, meat, veggies, and we get creative with it.

"Affordable" luxury brands like Tissot to high-end brands like Ball, Longines, Raymond Weil, etc. Quality 100% leather goods...belts, bags, purses, etc. Apple MacBook, iPad Airs, and newer model iPhones... even if you're an android/PC user, you can download most of the software/apps so you're still compatible. Bonus...Apple products have high resale values & trade-ins. Gift Cards... avoid prepaid Visa/Mastercard as they have fees for non-use.

  With iPhones I've always had insurance and so prior to the insurance running out (24 months) I'd replace the battery and maybe the screen if it was scratched to the point it was annoying (I don't like phone cases, will use them if I see a threat of damage, I'm getting insurance anyway because cases don't make your phone indestructible). The new battery can last another 3-4 years, I'm currently on my 3rd iPhone AppleCare+ is a must have, my phone can be destroyed or stolen and it costs me £75 excess, just fixing a broken screen once will let you save money and people break theirs all the time. All members of my family would have phones with broken screens. I've never broken my screen, although I do have a load of scrapes along the left edge that's just annoying enough I'm going to replace it at the same time as the battery as I'm expecting to have this for 4 more years

  My wife has an M1 air, and that thing kicks ass! you can do a lot inside of after effects with it, but you will start to feel the pain when you’re rendering or doing anything 3-D. But man that little machine is speedy, slick and has super long battery life. I definitely recommend it if over other laptops in that price range.

  laptop for college and photoshop

  Still running my M1 that I bought in 2022, works like a dream. Sometimes works kinda slow but that's because I have 300 tabs open at a time with Steam and other bits running. I got it for my final year of uni and I wish I just got the M1 when it first dropped. Doubly annoying that the M2 came out not long after. Something to be mindful of is that SSDs have a limited read-write cycle, there's some software out there that can estimate the lifetime left on it so if you do decide to go second hand that's something to be mindful of. But yeah, if you can get the capital, highly recommend an air. Apple also do a pretty decent discount for students if you wanna go new. Sometimes comes with airpods. I used to run a windows desktop that was decent, but with Windows getting worse over time I don't regret making the switch. If you're unconvinced with people suggesting Macs, see if your uni has a mac suite or mac loans as part of the course. I got aquainted with Mac fine by my third year, and if you're a power user you'll enjoy the shortcuts/command systems on mac. The Adobe suite is also optimised more for mac than Windows, InDesign for example has no GPU support on Windows. (I don't agree with that lack of support, but it was certainly a consideration for the purchase.) Good look with your degree, and no matter what you get it is the worker, not their tools, that define their craft!

  The 8+, discontinued 5 years ago, is limited to iOS 16. Apple still releases security updates for 16 when the issue is major enough but there will come a point when that will stop. That would be a good time to move on, but on average you can get a decade out of an iPhone.

  The last brand new phone I got was an iphone 3gs, whenever that came out. All the rest have been hand-me-downs or purchased used. I literally don't care about them at all, as long as they work. I think the one I'm on now is an SE II. Paid $220 for it a few years ago. I can't really see the point in 'upgrading' so frequently, especially when you're paying $1,000+ for these things. Personally, they're all the same to me.

  I have an iPhone 13 that I got in 2022. In general iPhones last a long time. For reference this is my iPhone history: *iPhone 4S: Oct., 2010 to Jan., 2013 (it died) *iPhone 5: Jan., 2013 to Aug., 2017 (the screen cracked and I fixed it but I decided I wanted something newer) *iPhone 7: Aug., 2017 to Dec., 2018 (only traded it in because an iPhone X was cheaper than the monthly payment I had on the 7; plus Apple gave me a $250 GC) *iPhone X: Dec., 2018 to June, 2022 (traded it in for an iPhone 12 which was free for 36 months; the phone was paid off but it was starting to get a little buggy) *iPhone 12: since June, 2022 (no real issues with the phone yet, which is good! I believe the phone is officially paid off this month….it was listed as a credit on my phone bill monthly as it was $0 for x months (usually 36 months IIRC). My husband had a iPhone 4S from 2010 to 2015; somehow his lasted a long time and mine was a dud. In 2015 he got an iPhone 6 and then he used that until my then 12 year old daughter needed a phone in 2018 (that phone died in early 2019). He then had his 8+ plus from 2018 to 2022 and the only reason I had him replace it then with the iPhone 12 is because I had a feeling it would be obsolete for software upgrades soon after that, and the monthly payment was less than $10/month and I didn’t want his phone dying and being stuck with a $50/month phone payment on the newest phone because he didn’t have a working trade in.

  I’m sure you’ll be fine, 4 years should be a reasonable time for a $1000 electronic device to work. I had the iPhone SE for 8 years then “upgraded” to my MILs old 8+ when she got a new phone last year, never had an app I couldn’t use, camera works well. Can’t really see a reason to upgrade tech wise.

  I guess this is one is a bit subjective but I bought my iPad Pro 2018 as a refurbed one in 2020 to start with university during the first major lockdown. Until this day, almost 7 years old, that apple device still going strong with the Apple Pencil pro and 120hz screen, not a single thought to upgrade to the new model :). I think it was a good deal since other “high end” tech devices only last for 2-4 years.

  Marketing and video editing here, 10 years on windows laptop and desktop, built it myself, specific specs for video editing and all so I kinda know what I'm doing, then mac for the last 5 years, macbook or mac studio all the way for your friends, I'm never ever switching back, and I was lying to myself when I thought mac are overpriced fashion items, they are just better in every way and specifically hardware durability, and now with the M series well it's just another level. I use mainly after effect and premiere, + some other on the side, I have 10+ softwares running at all time, their ram management and battery life is just unbeatable, everytime I touch a windows laptop now it just feels so clunky

  MacBook Pros (especially the M4 Pro or M4 Max models) offer excellent performance, hardware-software integration, amazing battery life, and run Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve like a dream. The mini-LED XDR display is also a huge win for color accuracy, and macOS tends to age more gracefully than Windows with fewer driver issues over time. If money isn’t a constraint, the 16-inch M4 Max MacBook Pro with at least 64GB of RAM and 2TB storage is a future-proof beast. Hope that helps!

  Don't try "for life" stuff, buy something nice and practical for now. Say good travel backpack or luggage, but not overly expensive and heavy, something which fits budget airlines. Ipad pro is really handy, not for life, but useful for many majors. You can open an investment account and put first sp500 etf in it if you want "for life". as for jewelry - it's fun if she likes it. I am not wearing anything from 20 years ago. Not even from 10, my taste changed multiple times, I have dead weight of stuff which I am not sure what to do with. My teen also does not care for it.

  Apple Watch. For someone with ADHD and bad habits, it’s been game changing. I can set quick reminders, add to my grocery list, set to dos, timers, and add events to my calendar by simply talking to my wrist. As soon as something comes up in my head, I can record it somewhere. Heck, for the first time ever I have an actual up to date calendar on my phone thanks to it. It also keeps me from getting sucked into my phone when I just meant to check the time or a notification. It reminds me to take my medicine. Being able to track my sleep has also been very helpful to manage my moods and depression.

  I've been using a MacBook Pro that's Arm based and not having any problems. I'm doing software development, and this is the only apple product I use, and it's really great. I do think if you are looking for a safe suggestion for someone to buy a laptop that will actually last MacBook is a good suggestion. I think even the new base models start at 16gb of ram (don't go lower than that). MacOS is still better than Windows, although I use linux on my desktop.

  Genuinely, the new MacBooks. Probably the best built quality on the market right now. Also the best battery life, screen, and speakers. They’ve greatly come down in price in recent years. The only two cons would be that it runs macOS (although Linux through asahi works great) and that it’s ARM.

  Buy it for life digital products?

  I think I have spent enough money testing solutions that I can provide a contribution. Laptops/computers. (I tend to prefer laptops). A computer is useful not until the next shiny graphics card but as long as it meets your needs. If your 2010 machine which you use to do browsing, emailing and maybe some other basic stuff satisfies your needs, and, if you are a gamer, still enjoy playing your older games, then it is a good machine. No need to buy anything new. Older machines, especially ones where Windows makes them feel like good for nothing can be given a new life by installign Linux. Moving to Linux is easier than it used to be. There is a LOT of support out there if you are willing to get your hands (proverbially) dirty. For most mainstream software there are free, open-source solutions. A cheap Raspberry PI5 can be a good PC replacement. Apple Macbooks - The older unibody Macbooks (to 2012) are extraordinary machines. They are found cheap on ebay. They are easily upgradable and can still do good work. Replace the main HDD with an SSD, put in 16Gb RAM (their max) and possibly replace the optical drive with another SSD (look on YouTube how to do this) and you have a fantastic machine. Mobile: Why do you use your mobile? A cheap Android answers calls and can do WhatsApp and allow for slow browsing and emails. One way to keep a mobile (and indeed computers) is to not follow the rule of always installing the latest OS. While some updates fix bugs, others introduce new functionality which hogs resources uselessly and are not always easy to turn off. Digital Cameras: unless you do photography for a living you do not need the greatest and latest. If you are buying, I would say to buy new within your budget. Photography is about three elements, ISO, Aperture and Shutterspeed. Even basic DSLRs will allow you to control these and produce great photos. As proof of this, you have seen photos taken years ago and you liked them.

  Apple's own, off their website, are as close to new as you can get. They're more frequently returns of items that were never used than anything else. If they aren't perfect, they essentially replace everything on it. Despite all of their other horrendous issues, they do this very well. When it comes to everything else I think return policy dictates willingness. Education on the item may help as well, as sometimes there are known issues you can guess as to whether or not the refurbished one could suffer.

  A nice set of adjustable dumbbells and a bench. REALLY came in handy during Covid, and keeps me from getting off track if I don’t have time for the gym. A nice pair of comfortable leather hiking boots. A nice mirrorless camera. (I’ve had my a6000 for about 10 years and it’s served me well) An iPad mini (I got one in college also about 10 years ago and I used it for all kinds of things until about a year ago now my 3 year old son uses it, still going strong) An actually comfortable quality desk chair (life changing if you spend a lot of time at your desk which I’m sure you do as an engineer) That’s all I’ve got

  What games do you play? Some aren’t available on Mac. I’d recommend a Mac for school, MacBook Pro if you can afford it, it will last you longer but only if you get 32gb. Gaming laptop would be second choice but again, 32gb. You’ll also lose a lot more juice with that so you will need to carry a charger, and it will be heavier so.. trade offs.

  We’ve purchased iPhones and MacBooks from Amazon Renewed. Last year’s models at substantial discounts. I have a house to maintain and 3 kids to feed. My wife just replaced her iPhone 8 this year, and I’ll probably replace my iPhone SE 2020 next year if it dies, still works fine. With Amazon, you can check the battery health and general cosmetics of any Renewed device and decide if you need to send it back for return or exchange. In all cases I received what I would perceive to be a new or nearly new product.

  MacBook Pro or Air. My MacBook Pro from college lasted a decade, traded it in to get $$$ and bought a newer MacBook Air that I’d expect to last just as long, if not longer since I don’t use it nearly as heavily as I did in college. Apple operating systems / interfaces are super easy to use, never had any issues with apps/software needed for classes, and never had any issues with any viruses or defects. Highly recommend! More $$ upfront but worth it for quality and how long they last.

  Like most have said, it's a good choice if there's some guarantee that it's actually been refurbished/is in good condition. It'll usually perform like new. I've also noticed a trend of people freely buying stuff to try out and returning for a refund. Sellers can't legally sell those products again as new, so there's a good chance of getting a product that's just been used once at a discount. That's why you might actually see the term "Open Box" used too. If the refurbished product has a warranty on it, it's a good sign.

  I’ve started to pet much buy seconds hand tech. Tech depreciates a lot fast so it’s frugal in the sense. And you can get really good deals in it. The only cost of buying old tech is longevity. For example let’s say an iPhone has a life for 4 years. You can buy refurbed iPhone 15 pro for like 700 usd and an iPhone 16 pro new for 1000 usd. You save 300 usd and that will run great the next three years whereas the 16 would run great for 4 years. So your paying less to have a phone each year if that makes sense?

  Do smart home items really work in long term?

  u/Then_Brush_2125, How smart? I object to open mics in my home, so Siri on my phone and iPad and Alexa on my Android tablet are disabled. I don't want any more "instant-on" devices drawing vampire power - electricity is expensive enough. I have a thermostat that the power company can control to manage heat and A/C schedules which saves me money and them infrastructure upgrades (saving me money there also). I have two individual lamps on remote switching through Apple Home (works over local WiFi). No voice command. I have three cameras so my wife can catch glimpses of her cat when she is away. We have a video doorbell. No subscriptions for anything, no cloud, no open mics. I have friends with robot vacuums. I'm not impressed. I find intelligent assistants not very intelligent and that gets back to the open mic problem. I do not want my refrigerator, clothes washer, dishwasher, et al communicating with me. I'm occasionally attracted to remote control blinds and curtains, but then I think about all the people in the movie *Wall-E* and I think getting up to open or close the blinds is not such a bad idea. Hue lights seem to me like a solution looking for a problem.

  I’ve used all of them (I used to be a cable installer for ATT and found it was easier to just make sure everyone’s Roku/Apple TV/etc was still working after an install and show them how to change over, otherwise I’d get dinged for customers thinking stuff broke) a lot and Apple TV is hands down the easiest to use and the most reliable. My grandmas Apple TV is like 5 years old at this point and still works great. Mines 2 years old (the newer ones w the silver-black remote are much more UI/remote friendly) and still works perfectly.

  IMO BIFL is a mentality of looking for the best value/performance out of products. Certain things are always going to have some degree of disposability built in, but we do the best we can. I’ve used my Apple TV for 3 years now and it’s showing no signs of needing an upgrade any time soon.

  I've had my latest MacBookPro for 8 years. The biggest issue is the speaker degradation and the lack of Memory, but the latter is on me. It's mainly for home music recording now, which is an incredible thing. My IphoneSE has always been longlasting as well.

The biggest issue with modern TVs is their need to be hooked to the internet in order to use apps like YouTube/Hulu/Netflix/etc. Over time that software will do the things like you are experiencing now and continue to slow down more and more each year. Your best bet is to never hook your TV into your network and instead purchase a set-top device like a NVIDIA Shield Pro/Apple TV or something similar.

  What is your current BIFL item you recommend to everyone?

  I’ve had both Macbooks and Thinkspads for about a decade now. Apple products are definitely better built. Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon lasts about 4-5 years in daily business use. After about three years, it starts to get all the time hotter, slower and noisier. Within the same time period you don’t see that in a Mac. It’s still dead silent and runs like new. I have the Macbook Air 2022 in use currently. I’m responsible for our small company’s IT fleet. It’s exactly the same with my colleagues. After the warranty period is done, the Lenovos just aren’t worth fixing. Some sellers give a small refund for the old laptop, so we buy new X1’s every 4-5 years. Obviously, these two have different use cases, so it’s somewhat apple to oranges (no pun intended). But I use my Thinkpads for fairly lightweight use: Office apps, lots of Teams and emails, internet browsing. On top of that, it’s almost always on clean table at a dock. The Mac I use literally on my lap, on the dusty sofa, sometimes in the bed and for much heavier use: streaming HD movies and some gaming. For personal use, I wouldn’t buy a Windows laptop. Simply because the quality varies so much and the resell value is non-existent after couple of years.

  What I needed my old MBP to do was “not spin the fan at 100% every time I use it,” and “not get uncomfortably hot when sitting on my lap.” The M processors handle those ‘tasks’ brilliantly. Literally this week, I wiped and rebuilt my ‘19 and the fan was pegged on high for the entire two hour process. By contrast, the only time I’ve ever heard the fan in my M4Pro MBP is when I’ve been running repeated benchmark tests, and even then it wasn’t full blast.

  The Apple Silicon ones are fantastic. They are faster with longer battery life and don’t need to rev the fans to do anything. I upgraded from a near-top-end 2019 MBP to a high-mid-range 2024 and could not be happier with the day-to-day experience. I do wish they had a socketed SSD solution for aftermarket upgrades, and cheaper RAM at initial purchase time but that’s about it. (Going from 48G to 64G is like $1K due to them requiring 2 levels of processor upgrade to make the jump, so I stuck with 48.)

  My 2011 MBP is still going strong. Runs minecraft fairly well. Also now have the M2 MBA and I love it. Work gave me a M3 MBP, it’s gorgeous and lovely to use. As someone who owns both a PC and Macs. PC people are insane please ignore them. If hardware specs are your main concern then PC it is. If what you value is an unobtrusive digital experience, that’s where the mac shines. Windows is constantly pinging you and asking you to do updates that end up causing problems. Things may just not work and good luck figuring it out. I used to love doing that research and diving into the problem but I have better things to do with my time. MacOS is fairly seamless unless you are a software dev in which case, you probably own both systems too.

  Nothing meaningfully BIFL. I travel a lot. I have two sets of Apple Gen 2 Airpods. I can switch between. I can use one set and switch from one side to the other and charge the offside in the case. I also carry wired buds. That's what I use on planes. Airpods can play from my iPhone, iPad, Android tablet, and Lenovo Windows tablet. I have older wired buds with 1/8" TRRS plug and a little adapter to Lightning. Someday I'll have to add USB-C. \*sigh\* I do have a Y-cord so I can charge my phone or Apple tablet and listen at the same time. IMHO, Apple was stupid to drop the headphone jack. They don't listen to me. I can charge everything off 220V 50 Hz, 117V 60 Hz, and 12VDC so plug in the wall and all auto/air. Remember to have your phone off and no buds in going through C&I anywhere.

  I have yet to see a smart TV do the smart part as well as my Apple TV. They generally are under powered in that regard and perform like crap. Apple TVs are damn near bullet proof. I’ve owned multiple over the years and even my oldest one still works just fine. Buy a tv based on the panel and then use a dedicated streaming box for the best experience. Also, get the appropriate size for your room and seated distance from the screen. Makes a huge difference in terms of immersion. All that hat being said, I recently upgraded to the Samsung s95d and holy shit does it look good.

  I'm not really an Apple guy tbh but I tried both models, (basic and pro model) and I'm quite surprised. The sound on both are quite something and the fit is very confortable. I have the Sony wf-1000xm4 and as much as the sound is good, the fit harder to be steady. I'm a runner and both apple model are fun to have, they stick generally good (non pro model can bit looser but can be fitter by twisting it in the ear). The little branch makes it steadier I think and the pro model was a no brainer, you stick it in there and that's it. For sure the pro model with the foam makes the insulation better, this depends on your use but for running, it's less ideal. I got the air pod pro 3 refunded only because I though I lost my Sony and found it the last day I could have the refund from the air pod and I miss them a bit tbh.

  My Airpod Pros have be excellent for me. I have had them for about 5 years now and still in great condition. During a Black Friday sale I picked up the new Gen 2's and gave my old pair to my girlfriend who uses them all the time. For wireless I think they are a excellent product. I do happen to have an IPhone so I am not sure how well they work on an Android platform. But they also switch over and work really well with my HP laptop too. Noise cancelling on my side and on my mic is has been great. Very happy with battery life too.

  Urgent Need for New Laptop

  A two year old Dell shouldn’t be going out on you. We have 5-6 year old Dells (and older) that are still running fine. Before you decide to spend hundreds of dollars on a new computer, check with your university to see if they have repair service on campus. If yes, get them to look at it for you and price repairs, if no then find a computer service center near you (Best Buy, U Break I fix)and get an estimate for cost of repairs…you may have to pay a “bench” fee for them to diagnose but that usually goes toward repair if they repair it. Many universities have loaners for while a computer is in the shop, so check on that too! Most universities have an “in” with Apple, Dell and Lenovo to get discounted pricing for students. Check on these prices before you go anywhere else. We have also purchased refurbished Dell computers from Dellrefurbished and refurbished Macs from Mac or All Trades. One of my kids just finished grad school with a 2019 MacBook Air we got for about $500 in Dec 2023 after their 2014 refurbished gave up…

  Not necessarily BIFL- but buying multiple packs of the same socks so I don't have a bunch of loose, lonely socks when I fold laundry has been amazing. I got a gift card for Christmas and I spent $100 on Darn Tough socks- all the exact same pattern so I don't have to think twice about folding them. I have a set of 3 styles of Merrell socks that I must have 8 packs of by now- makes my life way easier! I also found having a tablet to be useful, I sprung on an iPad last year, and while not BIFL- I can use it to motivate myself by writing out to do lists with my knock-off pencil, keep everything synced in OneNote if I am on the iPad and feel inclined to search something for school/work, and watch shows or movies when I am cooking, cleaning, or doing dishes.

  Dude honestly, any form of caffeine, I also recommend getting a prescription. But if you dont want to go that route, planners do not work. You need to have something in your face for organizing. You probably already recognized it but you probably only pick stuff out of the fridge if its visible, or you set items in a certain location. The following I recommend: - Organizer/Wall Rack for Keys, Coats, etc… - Apple AirTags for Wallet, Purse, Keys, or Backpack. (Most ADHD people lose stuff constantly) - Pick up after you are done immediately and dont leave it for later. - Distraction Wise definitely get some bluetooth earphones and make a chill playlist. I like EDM. Ex: Rufus Du Sol, they are calming and their music isn’t distracting. - Like someone else said make a home for everything. Just do it and never change it. Keep it clean tho, it can go from organized to junk/clutter very quick. But really with ADHD there is no one trick pony. Stimulants help the most and figure out what works for you.

  Yes, I use Apple Watch for timing myself and medication reminders. But mainly I can put my phone in a lock box timer and still answer important texts or calls from my watch. The phone lock box I have still allows limited button access for calls and volume control. It also lets you access it in an emergency by pressing 5 times on the unlock button. But the lockbox will stop working if you use the emergency lock more than 5 times I think. So not BIFL, but the Apple Watch helps with that.

  This. The old one (QC25) I have has a toggle on it, when you toggle it the active noise canceling would start, doesn’t matter if you play music or not Sounds like what you are looking for is ANC. Bose does the best job, Sony and AirPod pro are fine. In-ear earbuds and close back headphone has the best isolation. AirPods Pro also have the feature, just put it in noise canceling mode. Not sure about non pro version

  Need to replace my mouse!

  This really is a BIFL product, or it least it could be. I bought this mouse around 06-07, I believe. Lasted DECADES. The mouse itself is running, but the scroll wheel is going out. The rubber basically disintegrated and the wheel stopped functioning well after that. But this is the perfect mouse. Microsoft does not make what I want and Logitech doesn't seem too great either. I tried switching to the Apple Magic Mouse too. It wasn't the same. Here's what I NEED: * It has GOT to be ambidextrous. I mouse with my left hand. * It CANNOT be rechargable. I tried rechargeable. No. When it needs a top up, I can't stop my work for a couple hours. If the battery goes, I'll pop in a new one. Its been awhile since I used a corded one, but I'm not opposed if everything else is good. Here's what I WANT: * RF controlled. I used the bluetooth with the Magic Mouse and the responsiveness just wasn't the same. Again, corded may solve it, but I'm holding out for RF if available. * It does not need to be a "gaming" mouse. I game on a different machine. It has to last! Price is not a factor if other criteria are met. Thanks!

  I never thought I would buy a MacBook as a lifelong Windows user and software developer, but after going through 3 laptops in the span of my wife's one MacBook because of batteries and the laptops slowing to a crawl with each OS update I finally switched. The new M-series silicon is unbelievably efficient and the battery is truly in its own class. Pair that with an OS that is built for purpose and you have a device that will outlast any laptop. It's not perfect, and repairability is not great, but it's also not impossible to repair like some other apple products, and the batteries which are the worse culprits come out pretty easily in most cases

  You can run Windows on a mac if needed. Every "PC" laptop I've owned (read: been given for work) is falling to pieces in 2-3 years or less. My current $1300 work laptop is plagued with issues and updating to Windows 11 broke most of the audio, not even IT can fix it and it's less than a year old. Every MacBook myself or friends have had, lasted at least 10 years. I could fire up my 2009 Macbook pro or 2013 imac and use them without issue today. Still using a 2015 pro daily. I'm not a huge "Apple over everything" person this is just my experience.

Yes, just looking at RAM quantity for instance you'll find cheaper options, but they're practically unmatched in actual, real-world performance, reliability, display quality, battery life, fan noise (none!), sound quality, trackpad quality, getting software updates for years and years… Now, they're not really repairable so you kind of have to get the insurance on top of a high cost already. If macOS (or virtualized Linux) matches your needs, MacBooks are a no brainer.

  Everyone reading this other than OP should consider an Apple laptop.  First, they are carved from solid blocks of aluminum, leading to incredibly tough and durable cases. I have had 3 unibody macs and they all look nearly brand new when we upgraded.  Second, macs have a better resale, so you lose less of the investment if you need to upgrade for some reason.  Third, Apple really does spec the best component options. I have literally not had an Apple laptop die on me out of the 5 we have had, going back to 2006.  Fourth, their warranty really means something. They will fix their stuff with a minimal of hassle.

  Let me start off by stating I was a PC guy from my first windows computer in 1994 and always shunned Apple products. Something changed for me in 2019 after using an iPhone and iPad. I am rocking a 2019 MBP that I use daily for heavy office use. Lots of windows open, tons of excel sheets, used for Project Management duties and for when I have a need for windows, I use Parallels and can run Windows 11 on one monitor while running MacOS on the other two. Show me a windows PC that can do that! Beyond that, I have had zero issue installing every OS upgrade that has come out with no issues and never seem to have a problem with my network connectivity or printers. I am currently thinking of replacing my MBP with a M4 Mac Mini to keep on my desk and still utilize my MBP at home and on the go. I am also an iPhone and iPad Pro user and the connect ability between devices is awesome. I love being able to utilize iCloud and access my files from any of my devices. iCloud has far fewer issues than OneDrive.

  I grew up on PCs (dad’s a systems engineer and I was coding my own websites by 4th grade!) and I switched to Mac in university bc my program gave me a MBP. Having used higher end versions of both, including a desktop PC that my dad and I built together, I will ride or die for my MacBook. I have a 2013 MacBook that I have literally never had issues with and still runs adobe CC apps/affinity, multiple chrome windows with an actually insane amount of tabs, coding software, etc., and not a single PC that I or my family of engineers has owned in the last 35 years has lasted longer than 5-7 years before being replaced and I remember having to save all my important files to floppy disks and CDs and doing a factory reset on my PCs at least once a year, if not two or three times. FWIW, A lot of us actually have plenty of experience with higher end PCs and still prefer a Mac. People who prefer a Mac aren’t comparing their experience with an old and busted PC just because you don’t prefer a Mac.

I don’t know what it is about the software, but anything running on windows inevitably bogs down to a point it’s basically non-functional within a few years. Obviously, even Macs will eventually become obsolete and will stop supporting updates, but I’ve had two Macs that lasted 10+ yrs and they both worked fine still when I finally replaced them. That said, if you’re going to want to keep it up to date with new ram and graphics cards and whatever else, that’s something to consider. You can’t do that with all Macs.

  Apple all the way. My first Macbook, and this is going to sound surreal, but true story, got crushed in a building collapse. 4 stories of concrete fell on top of it. Several months on, police brought that Macbook back to me. It had been closed on my desk so not actually that badly damaged. It still opens. Screen is smashed, but the hard drive came out and I got everyhing off that harddrive. The Macbook I replaced the broken one with lasted at least 10 years. The only reason I retired it was I couldn't upgrade it any more and the main software I used would no longer work without updates. Such solid computers.

Also going strong. I won’t be changing it out until it stops getting updates.   There is no other answer than Apple and Lenovo. Full stop. Even in the highest end gaming laptops - like Asus or Alienware - they are all garbage. HP couldn’t pay me to use or recommend their hardware. Unfortunately even light gaming is incompatible with reasonable battery life - even with GPU switching or ARM cpus. I’d highly highly highly recommend choosing which experience you want to maximize - what do you spend the most time doing scaled by enjoyment (ie 1hr gaming but highlight of ur weeknight vs working for yourself 8 hours where that extra power each day helps). I’ve had a 15” air with an old gaming laptop that I used only as a desktop computer. That was a great experience. Oh - last thing - used MacBooks stay relevant far longer than used gaming hardware. A 2year old Mac may be 80% as good as a current day Mac but a used gaming laptop will be 70/60% of a 2year windows laptop. Credentials are I’ve worked for ~10 years, and I’m those times used intimately all three OS for every possible purpose. Used to build and repair computers as a side hustle in college.   What is the best laptop brand for long term use?

  Rest assured that when you do get a new one you'll get a very significant performance boost, not only because it's newer but because in 2020 Apple started using their own in-house-designed chips in Mac computers, and they're a serious upgrade from what they used before, even the most basic models. And this is coming from a Lenovo ThinkPad PC user, I don't know if I'll ever end up owning a MacBook but I have a lot of respect for Apple when it comes to the innovations they've made in their hardware design.

  Windows is getting more bloated by the day with the AI features and built-in spyware, do yourself a favor and make the switch to Mac. If all you do is check your email and watch Netflix, an Air is pretty affordable and will last as long as you don't try to use it as a workhorse. If you're a heavy user (graphic/audio/video editing, 3d work, gaming, etc) the fans on a Pro provide good longevity.

  Mac is by far the most durable and reliable. The fact that they do the hardware and software and there is no bloatware in there alone makes it times and times better. If you have to go Windows, I'd recommend Dell. But you have to go to the higher end lines like XPS to get good quality. Lenovos aren't as good as they used to be.

  I used to be a PC user. I would get a new computer every 3 years or so. I had my 2009 macbook until 2020. I only replaced it because I needed a newer computer for WFH. I was using my work Macbook air from 2014 until last year. It's still going, just a person with less seniority is using it.

  I've never had a Windows laptop that lasts that long (personal / work), this is definitely an area that MacBooks just excel at: my friend's still rocking my old MacBook Pro from 2016, and my wife's using my MacBook Air 2020. I was skeptical of MacBooks myself until I actually tried one and ended up preferring it than Windows. Hope you find what you're looking for though!

  Same here. I’m dreading the day I need to buy a new one as they’re so damn expensive but there’s no doubt I’ll be sticking with apple. No frustrating updates all the time and never needed to have an antivirus on it after all these years.

  I know you don’t prefer them but mac, specifically now with the M series chips, are phenomenal. The MacBook Air M4 is coming out within the next 6 weeks or so. The MacBook Pro M4 just dropped last fall- got it for my girl and it’s phenomenal and I expect it to excel for the next 5+ years.

  Yamaha, Technivorm, Toyota, Estwing, Leatherman, Apple, Hancock & Moore, Le Cruset, Allen Edmonds… Most if not all of those have some duds or exceptions, but generally speaking those brands just work.

  Looking for a television

  Sony suffers from the same problem every other major tv manufacturer does. They put a really great video post processing system in but put the literal bare minimum cpu and ram in. Makes everything laggy and slow, and I personally find google tv to be trying to do WAY too much. I mean for goodness sake, all 99.9% of people need on their tv is an easy to navigate App Store, App Library, input screen, and settings. I personally go for Roku, since even their $30 stick runs 10x smoother than everything else and you can functionally disable everything on the Home Screen except a single banner ad. Apple TV is the king of streaming boxes but I’m not spending $200 for their stupid box lol

  Looking for a television

  Unless you need a high-end TV for gaming or some other reason, buy the least expensive best rated one you can find. I tested TV’s for nearly 30 years. Samsung models are good but the remote and interface are horrid. I bought an AppleTV 4K to override them.

  Buying a decent TV in 2025

  That's why I never connected mine to the network. Smart TV UI's are all trash and after a certain amount of updates they all start to slow down. Much better off using a set top box like a shield/apple tv/firestick/etc.

  BIFL wireless earbuds

  I use my AirPods Pro every day for 4-6 hours for workouts, calls, music, etc. On travel days (100ish/year) it can be 10-14 hours. They last 12-18 months on average before some combination of: not charging, won’t hold a charge, start randomly unsyncing or disconnecting, etc. happens and I have to replace them.

  I'll be the one to break the thread of good feeback in Apple's favour. Owned the same windows laptop since 2011 and changed almost every piece in its bowels over the years - still going strong. Had, for work, to use multiple macbooks, and they all died without a cheap alternative for repairability Yes - you can go to apple and ask if they pretty please can change a battery, paying 10x the price of the piece. Not my vibe. BIFL means that if it breaks I repair it and it's affordable Shoes that can be resoled, cotton jackets that can be waxed, leather that can be conditioned, electronics that are easy to open and all pieces are universally exchangeable

  I'm still a big fan of Dell and Lenovo business laptops, but I really appreciate how easy Apple makes it to get a laptop with sturdy construction. You don't have to find out which product line has the metal chassis and which ones are fragile plastic, they're just all good. They're all expensive, but they're all good. And refurb/used apple products are so reliable used as well

  I am a late converter to Macbooks and staunchly used Windows laptops before 2020 that would die every 1-2 years; I'm an amateur photographer so they just couldn't handle even a moderate amount of regular photo processing and I'd find myself in wasteful cycle of having to discard and buy a new laptop frequently. Finally made the switch to the Macbook Pro in 2020 with the 1st gen M1 chip and it still runs beautifully (typing on it now)! I have friends who've owned theirs for around/upward of a decade, so I think it's well worth the slightly higher upfront cost.

  Sorry for the delayed response. Yes, those are certainly valid concerns you raised. I’ve lived in Mac world since 2007, and I have gotten by just fine. My wife switched before we got married (she’s a lawyer and has to share/collaborate with pc users a lot), and she would never go back. She hates technology, just wants it to work, and her Mac is the most stable computer she’s had. She uses google docs and Microsoft office in the cloud, so there are no compatibility issues. There’s a phrase Apple users use: “It just works.” Sure, you’ll have issues from time to time. It’s tech. But Apple support is excellent. I call them all the time. If you do get a Mac, getting an iPhone is also a no-brqiner. They just work together so well. I text from my Mac. My podcasts, music, files, photos, everything is the same. I pay a monthly fee to have iCloud+, which includes backup space for everything on all my devices. If I lose a device or drop it in a lake, I can simply get a new one, sign in to iCloud, and boom, the device restores to the state of the old one. I don’t upgrade every year. My iPhone is a 14 Pro, and it still has 94% battery capacity. MacBook Air M2 runs as fast as the day I got it. I’ve never. Ever. Had a virus on any Mac or iPhone. Ever. Can it happen? Sure. But it’s rare, and again, Apple Support is awesome. A free phone call. And because they make both the device and the operating system, the entire ecosystem is just so much more stable. Great for people who don’t want to deal with tweaking things or running antivirus software or etc. etc. I could go on, but I’ll shut up. If you want to go down the research path, just look at r/apple or watch YouTube videos on switching to Mac. Macrumors.com is also a great resource to learn pretty much anything you want to know. You can join the forums there and ask anything, and folks are usually very helpful. Oh, and Macs and iPhones last longer. So you’ll spend LESS money over time, especially if you keep your devices til they die.   Ah ok. That would of been relevant info to know as well. So really, you have only had those Airpods for 2 or three years then? Thats frustrating. Apple replace one of my old Airpod Pro earbuds a few years back for a clicking sound that was happening. They were out of warranty by a year when this occurred. Got them originally in the spring of 2000 and just upgraded to the new ones in mid Dec. The old ones are still working just fine. Battery life is a wee bit degraded but thats not surprising considering the age, use and amount of charging cycles I have put these thru. You want something different, thats totally fine and your prerogative. I am just making the case that the Airpods Pros are one of the better bang for your buck - especially on sale and despite your anecdotal experience- earbuds on the market. Cheers

  I just got the new gen of AirPods Pro and I think they are great. I will also agree that wireless earbuds are not a BIFL item. Four years is a pretty good run for what you have. Have you tried to factory reset your Airpods then update the firmware to see if it helps with the issue you are having?

  I guess it depends on what activities you plan to do. Every health item is BIFL if you never use it. Personally I would go with free weights or an Apple Watch. The watch isn’t BIFL but it is useful to see how many calories you burn and adjust your eating habits accordingly.

  If you buy iPhone you can’t get replacement battery on the side. Only Apple authorized store can replace it with original battery. But no worries. You still can buy batteries from China even for iPhone 4. So, yea.

  I’m writing this on an original iphone SE from 2017. It was overstock that the cell company had been trying to get rid of so they gave my family a good deal, and I’ve used it ever since. Yeah, it’s slow, the camera sucks under most conditions, and it’s almost always completely full because of the teeny tiny storage, but I love my little phone. I don’t use it all that much, mostly for texting on the go, navigation, and reddit, but it’s perfectly adequate for those roles and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Unless they came out with another phone this size that didn’t cost two grand. Then, and only then, would I consider.

  iPhone 8 Plus checking in. I don't even remember when I bought it, but I've replaced the battery twice. And my list of functions is pretty big: email, calendar, budget app, grocery list, audiobooks, podcasts, reddit, X, YT, chatGPT, text, phone, timer, PW manager, brokers/banking. Honestly, very few of those things requires newer phone hardware. As far as I can tell, the only reason I'll eventually have to upgrade is when Apple ends support for security patches.

  I think it’s not that complicated if you never set up the smart stuff and just use an external streamer like an Apple TV. I wish there were dumb TVs though. We bought a Samsung TV a few years back (middle of the lines, nothing huge or fancy but also not cheap) and the OS sucks. Apps are not great and the stupid TV frequently tries to control our speakers which it can’t but it still shows an annoying overlay with a high pitched tone in the middle of watching you have to actively cancel. There’s no option to deactivate this. On the other hand big and high quality screens in TVs have become a lot cheaper so I think overall this has improved. But like I said, best to use the TV as dumb as possible and connect an external streaming device of your choice.

  The Apple dongle is plenty robust enough. Unless you're buying the cheapest dongles on earth, the common denominator in them repeatedly breaking is almost certainly the way you're treating them - in which case you're not going to find a brand that fixes the problem.

  Apple. They last until the software goes obsolete. They never really die. As an alternative, you might want to try Fairphone. Every part in there can be replaced essentially extending its life for as long as possible.

  I've had great luck with the braided nimble, anker and ikea braided cables for work/home use. I've had PVC ones that break apart after very light usage within 1 year from Amazon so I typically make sure the sheathing is very solid. Can't go wrong with the original apple cable though. Those things really last quite a bit and can take a lot of abuse.

  How do you feel about buying things?

  When I am forced to buy, I try to buy for the long term. It’s ok to buy the cheap version once, if you use it enough to break it, get one that will last as long as possible. I drive a 20 year old car, I have owned exactly 8 outer coats as an adult, most from being too fat to fit the older ones, three were bought used. My sweaters are always a quality brand, but bought used. My pants are custom tailored and I get about 3-4 years of wear before I rotate them out. I have one style of sneaker I like, so I rotate between three identical pairs. I do the same with boots. I use a framework laptop, buy apple phones used or SE variants. For my hobbies, I buy music gear used or diy kits, I also buy my video games used or on Steam sale, I typically buy one game per year during launch week as a treat.

  [Request] Consumer-Grade (not military spec) Laptop with the longest lasting hardware/hinges

  I'm assuming you're just a white collar worker like me and just wants something that doesn't fall apart. Being a tech geek and a programmer, I absolutely love the new Surface. It's as fast and as capable as any laptop. And guess what? No hinges! It's one solid piece. There's not really any wear parts except on the keyboard cover. Not to mention that it can be just a tablet when you just want to watch movies, read books or something. If you want something bigger and more powerful, get an Apple Macbook. I feel it gets unjust flak for being expensive, but a lot of the price goes into the nice materials and the beautiful screen. And at the high end, (~$2000), it's competitive pricewise with Windows laptops of the same specs. Protip though: buy used. Macbooks haven't really changed that much since I bought mines (late 2013).

  Haworth chair on sale. Is it worth it?

  If you spend your workday mostly seated (as I do) it'll be a worthwhile investment... that said, I'd still try and find a used one as mentioned above. Another piece of advice, totally unrelated: Invest in a wearable that will alert you after some period of inactivity. The single most valuable feature of my Apple Watch has been the reminder to stand up every hour.
