Cashmere and merino from J.Crew and Banana Republic cause irritation. Should I try higher-end brands or look for alternatives?
I work outside in Texas all year, and 100% of my socks are wool blends. Even the thick ones are never too hot. In fact, the more wool content they have, the less hot they feel. I cringe when I think about what my cotton socks felt and smelled like before I switched to wool, especially in the dead of summer. As for your OP, yeah, some brands are way better than others in both quality of fur (wool) and workmanship. I personally would not buy wool stuff from the places you mentioned above. They might be cute or stylish off If you want to "invest" in a high-quality garment that will last, then there are several "buy once, cry once" brands with beautiful and durable sweaters. When I feel my Filson ($$$$), Pendleton ($$$), and Schaefer Outfitters ($$) wool outerwear against my wife's Old Navy ($) wool peacoat, the difference in feel/scratchiness is VERY noticeable. There are several UK/EU brands that make reasonably affordable and very attractive sweaters, with the best all-around probably being Aran.

Why is it so hard to find well-made clothes that aren't insanely priced?
I buy sweaters from Ireland. They are all Merino wool and well made. Try [Aran.com](http://Aran.com) or the Irish store. They cost about $100.

My Aran sweaters will outlive me for sure, especially the hand knit one I got on the Aran islands!

Brands you swear by that have Buy It For Life quality products
I have a barbour jacket (don’t know how old but surely 10+ years) and it’s fantastic, keeps me warm and dry during spring and autumn. Aran is great for sweaters, I have 2 knitted sweaters and a wool blanket all of which is holding up great. Just gotta make sure to care for your stuff and even cheap things will last long.

Anyone have experience with Aran wool sweaters?
Aran sweaters are my daily wear during the cold months. They’re 100% wool and are priced very well, even considering $35 shipping. As someone has mentioned, they do have a sheepy smell at first. I don’t find them more scratchy than any other wool product. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy from them again.

Anyone have experience with Aran wool sweaters?
Aran and I go way back, have a lot of their sweaters and suchlike - it all depends on the wool and the weave. Same for Blarney. The heavy fisherman's are scratchy wool, but there are softer items as well.

Anyone have experience with Aran wool sweaters?
I literally just got an Aran roll neck fisherman sweater delivered today. I tried it on over a long sleeve shirt and it didn't feel itchy. It's been in the 20s this week so maybe I'll wear it out tomorrow and see how it feels.

Anyone have experience with Aran wool sweaters?
I have a couple of Aran's as does my wife. They're solid and exactly what they claim to be. I'm allergic to normal wool and Aran sells some of their designs in Marino which is also less itchy.

Looking for a recommendation for a BIFL Wool Sweater (ribbed)
Their sweaters do everything that wool is supposed to do. I'm going on year 7 with my full zip fisherman. It's never been washed or dry cleaned. I only hang it on the line outside for 12 hours and it totally cleans itself. No pilling.
