I cant make it 10 steps in olukais before feeling my cfl atfl and whatever the one on the inside called... delta? You’re not doing anything wrong wearing one pair almost every day will kill pretty much any sneaker, especially flat ones like Chucks, Vans, or Sambas. They look great but they’re not built to be daily beaters. If you want stuff that actually holds up *and* still looks good, these are easily the top picks in 2025: **Adidas Samba (in rotation, not daily), Adidas Ozeweego, New Balance 9060, Nike Zoom Vomero 5, and ASICS Gel-1130**. All of those have way better cushioning, heel structure, and outsole durability than vulcanized shoes. Biggest upgrade though? Rotate 2–3 pairs. One flat classic, one cushioned runner-style shoe, one casual beater. Even “durable” sneakers fall apart fast if they’re worn every day.

It's such a personal thing. I run tonnes and tend to use NB or Asics, but I know ultra marathoners who swear by Saucony or Nike or. Nnormal. It's really about what feels good on your feet and what fits your running style (e.g. if you heel strike, certain shoes won't work for you) and foot shape (some shoes have narrow toe boxes).

Gel Nimbus 27, Gel Kayano 32, Hoka cliftons but the wear and tear is alot if you use them for what they are build for. Hoka mach x and bondi is good as well. Few brooks models are good for stability and I have heard good things about the new vomero however i havent got them yet.

Definitely go in to a running shoe store and get tested and fitted. You don’t want to waste your time buying shoes and then ultimately not fitting. I recommend asics (novablast) and new balance (rebels). Those 2 shoes are what I used for my marathon trainings. They’re wide feet friendly too.

What signs do you look for to tell if something will actually last years?
Might be true sometimes, but hardly a fact Easy negative examples: 1. LV bags never go on sale because the company burns the unsold inventory to keep the price and luxury ilusión. 2. Verdache Silk garments- never on sale, horrible quality. Now, positive examples: 1. Size: my wife is a 0 or 00 depending on the Europe’s brand. She has an absolutely amazing wardrobe and probably spent a third than I did with four times the volume. Reason? Her size is always on sale because it’s a size which never sells well. Same with shoes. 34 1/5. Jimmy Choos which go for $1300 for $378 …. Because of its size. 2. Colour/Collection: Ascics Gel-Rocket Squash Shoes. Black/Silver go for $89. Peach-Gray which are horrible go for $29,99. Obviously I went for the Peach hehe. 3. Earlier collection: Faconnable Knitted 100% Milano Wool Sweater 2023- €150. Same item, model 2025 -€325 (it has a couple of knitted line patterns in the sleeves. I didn’t see anything different).

Is this more for everyday wear or are you mainly after hiking/gym shoes if you don’t mind me asking? if it’s the latter, then yeah, some brands should be holding up way better for what you’re paying. Need comfortable shoes to help with foot pain.
PSW (similar to CNA in the US) and I work 16hr shifts regularly. These are 25k step shifts. And I'm a little on the chunky side 😉 Definitely go to a podiatrist to get a diagnosis or eliminate potential problems. Here in Ontario Canada a podiatrist is under $100 for the initial visit. It could just be your weight but it also might not be. It would make sense to rule out some problems before dumping money on a good pair of shoes that might not be right for you if you were given a diagnosis. Another suggestion is to wear compression socks, the lightest compression is a great place to start and you can buy them fairly affordable ($20-$30pr) on Amazon. The majority of my healthcare peers swear by them - they were life changing for me. Once you get into shoes, most brands have different cushion levels but you'll probably want something like New Balance 1080s or the Asics gel Kayano. I wear the Asics and I don't find them all that slip resistant when I'm in the kitchen. My mom worked at McDonald's when I was a kid and I remember the floors being especially greasy so keep that in mind when you're buying shoes too.

I recently bought a pair of Asics which have been treating me super well. I have flat feet so they have the perfect sweet spot of just enough arch support and padding to be comfortable but flat enough that my foot can stay in its natural position. I guess if you do need a lot of arch support they may not be the best choice but I like them a lot.

I started buying running shoes from Fleet Feet several years ago. I've been very happy with the fitting process and the shoes I've gotten from them. I wear ASICS (Gel Kayano) now. As you and others mentioned, these shoes are consumables. Like tires, the materials knowingly break down with usage. I replace mine about every 250-300 miles. All my milage comes from running though. What I usually do is rotate my prior running pair into walk around shoe. But if you don't run I think they'd make good walking around shoes.

If you're not putting serious miles on them, a lot of Asics models provide plenty of cushion without bilk and are comfortable for long days (my preference for work shoes as a nurse on my feet for 12-13 hours at a time) but if you're walking serious mileage, you'll want more cushion such as the Hoka Clifton or the Brooks Glycerin, based on my personal experience. I trained and ran many races in Hokas believing that distance running meant I was forced to have blisters no matter what, but I haven't had any since I started running in Brooks Glycerins. Working/ standing in the Hokas was much more comfortable and I'd walk or stand in those all day over the Glycerin, but if I'm running, it is gonna be in Brooks.

No running shoes will be BIFL, you already nailed that. I run more than most people and am going on my third pair of running shoes for the year, which is nothing compared to really dedicated runners. Once you start hitting 300ish miles on running shoes, they degrade pretty quickly. I'm a nurse too, so my work shoes get considerable mileage, but more significantly time. I can run for hours but standing in one place for more than 5 or 10 minutes is arguably more taxing from a fatigue point of view. I love Hokas but they gave me blisters. They were great for work shoes but by the point I retired them the soles were worn out. Now, I like Asics for my work shoes and have been on Brooks for a couple generations for my running shoes. A local, independent running shop owner spent an hour going over the differences and had cut cross sections of all the popular running shoes and explained why certain ones would be better for me/ why they were better in general. All I know is now I can run all of my training without blisters and in comfort. It sounds like Fleet Feet is kind of a boutique chain of similar shops. It really doesn't matter in the end, if you get shoes that fit and feel good. Brooks has a great return policy too - I bought Ghosts and they did not fit me well. I returned them with no issues and ended up in a different line altogether but from them. Doesn't hurt that they offer 25% off for some professions. Worth trying out with their great return policy.

Asics (for walking, cement trails mostly). I’d have to look up the details but my husband just keeps ordering them for me on Amazon and the keep working for me. Also usually about $60-70 each time. It’s probably worth mentioning that I have custom made orthotics (since the 1990s) that I wear in all flat shoes; I have high arches and I pull tendons in my feet if I don’t use the orthotics. So arch support is already taken care of for me, and I don’t have any pro- or supinating issues. I wear the same pair twice a week to walk 5 miles a day. I alternate days so they dry out in between. I also wear them when I’m spending hours shopping flea or antique markets (I spend roughly 4 hours at these markets 5-7 times a year), most of which are on concrete flooring. Every pair of asics has held up quite well and I simply replace them when I can tell that it’s time.

Hokas are comfortable no doubt but for heavy walkers, they don’t last any longer than a 70 dollar pair of asics. For me, about 8 months before I burn a hole in the sole of either. What I’m trying now is the “alternate shoes” method. I bought two pairs and rotate them. It’s supposed to extend their life by more than just double.

Recommend getting a gait analysis done - they'll have you run on a treadmill and recommend the right shoes to suit your gait. For long-lasting.. I've personally found Asics and Saucony to be very good, while Nike has some problems with soles peeling off

Best wide shoes for heavy folks (8+ hours standing)
I have wide feet and high arches. I wear New Balance 880 v15 (wide) with Currex Run Pro inserts . I wear these for running/walking, but that combo would also work for standing. The best wide fit shoes imo are New Balance, Brooks, ASICS, Hoka and Karhu. You should really try a bunch on because fit varies so much. I go to a place called Fleet Feet and they do a scan of your feet and use that as a starting point. I highly suggest doing this. Just google "running shoe store" and I'm sure you can find a similar shop in your area.

My Gel venture 9's lasted me about 3/4 year each pair, but I'm fat and also rebuy them early rather than put inserts in them. I could put inserts in my old ones and use them outdoors for sure, which I might do and use the 10's I just ordered for work/going out.

New balance 990 v6 are pretty amazing. The hokas are full of foam and are ok. You either love them or hate them. The 990's aren't the most attractive shoe but, in my opinion, are the most comfortable shoe I've ever owned. Asics gel-NYC is also a favorite of mine, I've just never owned them.

Recommended Shoes for All Day Wear
Sounds like you could be dealing with heel spurs or plantar fasciitis. Sorbothane makes inserts and heel pads that helped me a lot when I battled plantar fasciitis. ASICS gel kayano is pretty cushy too. Haven't tried any of their other models. I eventually settled on Brooks (Adrenaline GTS, Addiction, Glycerin GTS) and I live in them now. Had to wear them for a while before the pain totally went away.

I was issued Asics when I was in the Army. They held up pretty well on long runs on pavement and tank trails. They won't last a year if you are putting a lot of miles on them. No shoe brand will. Shoes need to be replaced after a couple hundred miles. If it takes you 2 years to hit 500 miles, then I guess they could last 2 years.

I have gone through a few pairs when I was running. I would get last year's model for half price at Big 5. The foams used in running shoes compress with use. You can put in new insoles. The trail dust and my wide toes were kind of rough on the shoes and I wore them far longer than I should have for good running comfort. I think they were a good value when I had them. I have a pair in a box I only wore briefly before a program giften me a nice new pair of Nikes to test. By that point I wasn't running or hiking much so the Nikes are in pretty good shape still. My daily walk-around shoes are a pair of Mizuno cross trainers, over $100. They have a flatter sole than a running shoe usually does and I like that if I'm not on my feet a lot.

Affordable and high quality for what they are. They’re a Japanese company that has been standing by their products. They even have a line of office footwear with sports insoles in Japan, they are a godsend for long communes. Anything more for a job of sneakers, you’d want to look for something made by a shoemaker.

I'm hard on my feet and more than a year is a good run for me - no running, just daily trail walking with the dog. I've stuck with ASICS for a few years: Gel Venture 7, 9, 10 and Gel Sonoma GTX 6, 7. But I feel the quality has degraded in recent years. I returned the last pair of Gel Venture 10 in 2 months as the inner heel was falling apart and my previous Gel Sonoma GTX 7 lasted 8 months before the soles were worn smooth.

Decent and durable sneakers?
I like Hokas or Asics. I wear my hokas every day for every activity. They've lasted me two years so far. For Asics, I used to run 3-5 miles 5 days a week. They lasted me a solid year. I only replaced them because it was expected to in my sport. I'm not sure you should buy them second hand. Sneakers wear down over time.

New shoes for every day walking and gym?
Running shoes are not BIFL as shoes need to be replaced every several kilometers due to wear. For comfort, especially for walking, look into Hoka Bondis. I'd trust a chiropodist's opinion too. The one I see recommends shoes from Asics, on, and Hoka.

Where Does "Buy It for Life" Not Make Sense?
I buy last seasons asics gels for $40-60 and when I had my more active job they would last me about 6 months tops. Now I sit behind a desk and just take daily dog walks 2-3 times a day so curious how long they last now. This is my transition into old man thinking. My gfs grandparents switch up which couch cushion they sit on every day so there is even wear 🤣

Yeah but a good pair of runners will still last like 5000km maybe? Id get 1-2 years out of my asics doing similar distance. They were expensive shoes though. Jesus. But much better than the garbage I see filling stores now that’s 100% foam with no rubber on the base. Really weird

Hokas aren’t the prettiest, you can get some nice looking ones that aren’t super chunky. However! The chunky ones literally reversed my plantar facitis, and I was a good runner walking catering trays to tables for 300 cover nights at a country club, I would put 12k steps a day in them and they have barely shown wear and I still use them on walks. They have the most cushion I have ever had in a pair of shoes. Probably run you $90-150 Also recommend ASICS too, pretty comfy if you get the right pair and they break in a little, but I wore them until they fell apart. Last pair I bought was like $35 from a Big 5. Not really a buy for life. That being said the only shoes I really think fits the BIFL metric are boots, and shoes that can be resolved.

Yeah I'm from Europe and you can absolutely walk around in sneakers, everyone does. You will be totally fine with a pair of asics gel or new balance or so. I think bags and hats and clothes with colourful pattern will more likely reveal that you are a tourist. I honestly can't say what it is but you just know who is a tourist and who isn't. Might as well embrace it!

Same here. Bought them for 14 days in Italy and France. Comfortable, yes; Fashionable, good enough; Long lasting. Not at all. My Asics and Brooks sneakers have far more miles and are in better shape. My Cole Haan fashion sneakers are slightly less comfortable but also have lasted longer.

Do Nike/New Balance/ASICS shoes last long?
I have a few pairs of Asics that I've owned for many many years, but I have specific uses for each of them (gym shoes, yardwork shoes, etc). They've held up really well but the bright/light colours do stain/fade easily with use over time. I had one pair that had mesh right up to the toes that tore there after some use, so I avoid that style now.

Idk if either fits bifl, ive run half marathons and rum through a few pairs of shoes during the training. Ran in pretty much every brand, personally loved the fit of NB because of their wider toe box fitting my foot better. Close second would be asics and i liked the look of my asics better than NB. About 2 years ago a switched to minimalist shoes and honestly havent put on my other shoes outside of longer days I knew i would be on my feet long hours. I have 2 pairs of xeros and put in roughly 200+ hours on one pair and 50ish hours in the other. They hold up extremely well the 200+ hours are still going strong and i only got the second pair for looks.

Shoes aren't bifl or even buy it for a long time. The foam compresses and shoes comfortable for walking have very thin rubber grips on the bottom (to maximize the foam for a comfy ride). For long walks in the park regularly, expect to replace the shoes at least every 2 years, possibly every 1 year. Also, if it's a daily shoe, you may want to consider two pairs - one good running/walking shoe and one good casual everyday. Because of the amount of foam in running/walking shoes, they wear a lot faster. A good sneaker would be better for your running errands and will allow your expensive running/walking shoes to last a lot longer. I would recommend New Balance over Cloud on. Also look at Brooks, Asics, and Hoka. If you can go to a shoe store that does fittings you can usually explain to them what your intent for the shoes are and they are usually good with suggesting the best shoe for your use case.

I have a pair of the new balance 990s version six, and a pair of the 1080s, and those two shoes alone are some of the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever had on my feet. On cloud shoes are unique but not on the level of new balance. Only one other shoe would I recommend for all day everyday, ridiculously comfy shoes and that’s the asics gel nyc.
