  I am in the UK. About to by a washing machine. Which brands to avoid, which brands to pick

  yeah, LG are probably the most reliable brand of washing available in the UK, with the exception of asko, ebac and miele, but they are very expensive in comparison. it's strange that some people on this thread are giving advice to avoid them.

  I haven’t experienced any leaking, no! I’m still really happy with mine. My biggest short term concerns were mould growth and smells - I’ve had none of either with this machine. My biggest long term concerns were reliability and longevity. I don’t know if it’s been long enough to make a call on that, but it’s held up beautifully so far with moderate to heavy use.

  hi there yes I did. Got the Asko classic 2.1 cu. ft version. Switched from a 12+ yo whirlpool, what we like so far: 1. drum design - very easy to wipe the rubber seal dry after a wash (rubber seal on conventional design collects lots of water if not taken care of creates a bad smell) + way less vibration & noise (what we like the most). I think all the machines out there should have this same design. 2. easy to use & start - pick the settings push 1 button to start the wash, which starts pretty much right away. The Whirlpool takes time to start when you close the door properly. Wife no longer needs to temper w/ the door to restart a wash that didn't start properly. 3. build quality - very good. Feels more professional compared to the Whirlpool. I enjoy watching it operates for some odd reasons. The only issue we had so far was condensation started forming inside the glass after half year or so (we suspect a floor model was given to us). The store replaced the entire unit (instead of the door). Took 2 months for the new unit to arrive. The new unit is even quieter when the installers placed the dryer properly (with front aligned properly instead of sitting an inch back) on top of the washer. They had the promotional 10 years warranty on the seal that we signed up. will see how long the seal holds on this completely new machine. I like the machine would recommend it.

  Well I've had mine about 2 years now and it has been very good. Sometimes it gets its software in a twist but I just do on/off. As to noisy, that's only when it does a long spin. It seems, so far, at least as good as any other AWM I've had, and better than most.

  Dishwasher recommendations

  Another vote for Asko. 20 years on and haven't had to do any repairs at all. Nice and quiet, excellent pots+pans cycle gets everything clean the first time.

  Asko. I've had mine for 5 years and really like it. Works without a heating element in the tub so plastic doesn't warp. I've put many "not dishwasher safe" things through with no issues. Also only requires a cold water tap.

  What's the oldest appliance you own?

  Everything in my house dates from 1999. Maytag heavy-duty washer and dryer, Asko dishwasher, Bosch wall oven, Thermador cooktop, and I’m here to impart my little nugget of wisdom: I’ve been stretching these appliances for literally years now. Everything gets routine maintenance and is kept impeccably clean, yet their useful lifespan has been reached. I replaced the water inlet valve on my washer last year, but now the timer’s going and the part is $300 with NINETY DAY delivery. I’m now comparing Amana and Speed Queen (Huebsch) in Canada, deciding what to buy. My repair parts pusher says they’re the same item with different branding, so I’m going to do my research. The Speed Queens are almost 3x the price. The wall oven has a small hole in the base, and it’s not repairable but it still remains functional. I’d love to change it to a double wall oven, but modifying the existing cabinetry is holding me back. The cooktop has been my nemesis since I moved into this house. It’s a 36” stainless steel top with coils which I hate with a passion. I’ve taken apart the down-draft vent system 3 times and replaced the micro switch twice. I’d kick this to the curb, but replacing it means changing the island surface which entails more work than I’m willing to do right now. The potentiometer of one coil is starting to go, and newsflash, the part is no longer available. The Asko dishwasher is a workhorse, yet the front panel is held in place with electrical tape, and this part is also discontinued. It’s unaesthetic and looks white-trash, but it still scrubs like a MOFO. So, I make do, yet again. I’ve been appliance shopping lately, trying to wrap my head around the eventual demise of all these appliances simultaneously, and it’s, I don’t know, maybe a bit disheartening? Nothing is REALLY built to last anymore. Routine maintenance will only take things so far when parts become obsolete. I absolutely hate the thought of my appliances ending up in a landfill when they can be recycled or harvested for parts. Anyhow. I’m rambling now. Nothing is made to last anymore, sadly.

  A new washing machine in 2025. What can I buy for life?

  I have heard nothing but good about Miele and Asko. But I couldn’t bring myself to pay for replacing my Electrolux with either.  Since my old Electrolux lasted around fifteen years, I went with that.  I am five years in with no problems.  Perform regular maintenance (mostly running a monthly cleaning cycle and rinsing the soap drawer) and close the door only when washing clothes (prevents mold and mildew growth).  I also have a whole house surge protector (helps reduce the chances of damage to circuit boards).
