  You don't need to go half a size up. Just wear normal medium/heavy wool socks. Also pretty much any gore-tex hiking boot at an outdoorsy store you will find will be good. Asolo and Salomon have plenty of good options for example.

  I have a pair of Asolos that I believe turn 10 years old this year on its original sole. Definitely can last quite a while if you actually use them

  It is not cheap to ship to Italy, from what I've heard. Shipping it to Seattle will be much cheaper, though. If you have the Fugitive GTX, it might be worth resoling. They're stout boots. If you had something like my 520s, I'd definitely recommend resoling because keeping a broken-in leather boot is worth a lot.

  Dave Page, Cobbler in Seattle, WA, is going to be the best bet stateside. He can put the same Asolo sole on your boots, or he can put a Vibram Bifida sole on, depending upon the boot. The Bifida sole lasts ages, and it isn't susceptible to hydrolysis. I've never tried it, though. I've just heard great things about it. Aside from Dave Page, shipping them to Asolo in Italy is probably the best option. I mostly recommend a resole if you have a leather model, like the TPS 520/535 or Power Matic, because they last so long. With the synthetics, I don't see as much of a point in it since a new pair would break in so quickly.

  A few times a month is usually good to preserve them. It's when they stay stored in a box for two or three years while the wearer burns through another pair that it becomes a problem. You can store them for a season if they're dedicated winter or summer boots without issue, but they need to be used for at least a decent part of the year. It's best to rotate through pairs if you have multiple pairs. When that's not practical, you have to store them correctly. I have three pairs of Asolos that are different ages for different purposes. I use them. By the time the PU hits the end of its life, the tread will be worn down, and I'll just send them off to be resoled. Hydrolysis is a non-issue if the boots are used as intended.

  It's not "normal" for them to disintegrate. It's just a byproduct of using PU for the midsole, and it can occur with any brand using that material. If you use these boots regularly, the tread will be gone long before hydrolysis sets in, and then you can just resole them. If hydrolysis concerns you that much, resole them with a Vibram Bifida sole that isn't susceptible to hydrolysis. I've been using Asolo for years, and I've never had an issue with them.

  They're the absolute best boots out there, so long as they fit your foot shape. I've got 3 pairs of them currently, and none of them have ever disappointed me.

  I climbed all of Colorado’s 14ers wearing Asolos on the majority of them. 8 years of serious use and they were definitely worn out by the end when I retired them. I’m on my second pair and I absolutely love them. They are expensive but they are the real deal.

  Best hiking boots for men - Suggestions needed.

  So one brand I’ve not seen listed so far are the Asolo’s. All leather, traditional hiking boot, above ankle. Very stiff until broken in but will last years with heavy use even after. Pricey, they’re about 300-400 USD now, but my last pair lasted over 5 years of heavy use, and I’m a big man that goes through shoes.

  Need new boots for dessert hiking.

  Any of the top tier hiking brands should be good. Keen, asolo, Salomon and others few things I'd recommend... 1 get a boot that fits well (don't pick a brand, pick the boot that fits well from one of the top brands). 2 unless youre worried about the sides getting torn, get something breathable (I would avoid heavy leather use and waterproof boots especially for the desert.) It's going to be dry and if you step in water your feet will dry out quick. The breathability will keep your feet healthier. Lastly and this depends on you but if you'll be doing a lot of miles. . .consider a lighter weight boot to save your legs. Most shoes/boots are really only good for a few hundred miles before the supportive layers in the sole wear out and some lighter weight top materials will last that long anyway. Hiking shoes/boots are something you want to be good shape to not hurt your body long term. That includes not wearing them past when they are no longer supportive. O btw get lighter weight wool socks to pair with them. personally I'd be out there in some trail runners that are comfy allowing the sides to get torn on rough terrain a bit before I'd wear a heavy non breathable boot. Your feet will love you for it. I've done lots of desert miles over my life. Including a number of week(s) long backpacking trips on and off trail. My thoughts on this aren't really traditional bifl but I do have that mindset for a lot of things. My experience says get a really good brand and don't make it do more than it should since bifl isn't entirely appropriate here.
