  Best thing to buy for $100

  completely agree on the safety razor; get one with 3 part assembly, not a butterfly. A stainless steel one is absolutely BIFL and a money saver over time (and a whole lot less plastic waste as a bonus!). But buy a multipack of blades to try various brands. Astra is solid choice, but found I like the the Feather Platinum better; blades are personal preference.

  A good razor, I like keeping a clean shave

  Merkur (OG, current safety razor) or Hanson (haven't tried this, Canadian brand, seems like an interesting improvement). Astral Platinum blades but get a sample pack from Amazon or somewhere to find what's best for your hair.

  What's a purchase under $50 that has genuinely improved your daily routine?

  Haven’t seen it. My recommendation is always the same, buy cheap till you figure out what works. Astra blades are like $7-8 for 100 blades and in my research have been the most recommended. I bought a $5 handle from TJMaxx to learn with. The blades that come with it are junk and it broke in a few months. Then bought a cheap one from Amazon with a longer handle. That is when I learned about aggressiveness of the handle. It is definitely a trial and error type thing. I just got lucky and found my setup on the 3rd attempt, so I only had about $50 on handles getting there.

  What's a purchase under $50 that has genuinely improved your daily routine?

  I personally like the Merkur 34C razor and Astra platinum blades in green packaging. I have tried a butterfly safety razor that I hated and I originally bought a sample pack of blades on Amazon to try various which is how I ended up with Astra. Also if shaving face using a hot towel for prep could make a big difference, the shaving cream matters also, I like Taylor of Old Bond, just not the menthol minty one. Also use a good shaving brush. Hopefully that helps.

  Change the blades you’re using. Astra I’ve seen recommended a lot do a really good job, but they’re harsh. Someone recommended Gillette blades to me and while I don’t prefer them because it feels like it takes me longer to shave, they’re way better for sensitive skin. Sometimes I’ll switch to them if my skin is having a sensitive day.

  What's a purchase under $50 that has genuinely improved your daily routine?

  I have gone through 4 handles and 3 brands of blades. Finding the right combo was hell on my face but awesome in the end. Believe it or not there are different classes of handles based on aggressiveness. I found less irritation with a short handle as opposed to a longer one. Also, try flipping the blade over. I can tell the difference between sides of my blades. They are numbered. Manufacturer says it is only for quality control purposes but I say BS, the #1 blade edge is way more subtle than the #4, which is aggressive. Astra blades were 7.50 for 100 blades last time I bought them. Handle was $22. Both on Amazon. I use each blade twice and get a new one. I use mine with the 1-2 up (towards the butterfly doors)

  PSA: Please refrain from making posts about inherently consumable products that last you a long time because of sporadic use and not quality.

  I feel like astra double edged razor blades are sort of there, and sort of not. The bifl is the safety razor itself I suppose. The blades are excellent because: no plastic and they cost like 10 cents a piece when you buy a 100 pack.

  What are some of the best products/brands you love splurging on?

  I've had one of these Leaf razors for almost ten years now, I think? It's paid for itself many times over. Husband and I both use Astra refill blades which are dirt cheap. Great product.

  It's /r/wicked_edge btw. Their wiki has a good guide, and my advice to OP would be to try a few different blades (Personna, Astra, Feather, etc) before buying a 100-pack

  I upgraded my BIFL razor to make it portable!

  You can use regular soap to shave. Like straight up off-brand dove bars or Irish spring. Just use whatever soap you buy for your body and mix it up in a shaving cup with a boar's hair brush. You can use regular skin lotion on your face. I mean your face is still made out of skin, right? Who doesn't have a bunch of lotion lying around? Astra blades are 8.5¢ a piece on Amazon (not even the cheapest but I like them, they seem to do well for me). If you swap it out every week, sure it'll be more than a dollar. If you use less than 11 blades a year (swapping out every month or so) you're coming out less than a dollar. I don't shave that often so I go through blades at about that rate.

  Stuff you will continue buying for life

  I know this is a personal opinion thing but I'm with you on this. Been using Astras for 12 years now and I'll probably never try anything else again. I've tried most of the brands on the market, at least the ones a decade ago.

  Ever Bought Something That Quietly Changed You?

  Safety razor and brush set, completely eliminated my ingrown hairs issue and saved me money from the cartridge razors. I bought samples to find the right blade and Astra Platinum Double has so far been the best one for me.

  I'm using my Grandpas gillette ball end razor handle.

  My short list has feather, Astra, Wilkinson sword, bic platinum and shark. Still have a ways to go before I decide which ones I like best.

  it depends on the brand, some DE blades come in in a plastic thing (usually the case with feathers and personas and Wilkinsons) and some (like shark, vokoshod, astra) come in a cardboard box - Usually if you buy in bulk (i.e. 100 blades of the same brand like Astras) you get long cardboard tube full of lots of the small cardboard packs of those
