LL Bean, Baffin, Hoffman. I've spent most of my life in MN and MI. We always wore Sorels, but haven't had good luck with them in quite a few years, so I wear Bean boots now. All the Canadians wear Baffins, and Hoffman will probably be the next pair that I buy. They seem like the best snow boots I've found.

I have Baffin yellow knife. Got them from Sierra (outdoor gear version of Tj Maxx) for $80, so a good gamble. Not sure about their longevity but for $80 I don’t think I could’ve got a better deal. They run large so I’d get your regular size and just wear thick wool socks

Best winter parka money can buy?
A sweater isn’t “layering”. I walk my dog for an hour everyday regardless of the weather. It’s been ~-25c with windchills down to -35c for the last couple weeks. I wear a merino base layer set, so a long sleeve shirt and long John’s. Then I put on a long sleeved tshirt and jeans. Then I wrap my scarf around my neck before adding an insulated hooded sweatshirt. Then comes my wool hat. I put up my sweatshirt hood and the put on my heavy duty Eddie Bower parka. Then come my large mitts and Baffin boots. I put up the fake fur lined hood as I excite the house. I am toasty warm for most of the walk. My legs would like me to also add some wind proof pants, and I do when we hit -40 with windchill.

Request: Narrowing down my winter boots selection. Input appreciated !
They seem to be holding up well as they don't see so much use considering we haven't had crazy snow here. They're indeed warm and comfy. I think there may be a tiny hole somewhere though because I can feel a smallest amount of water every now and then. Not sure if it's a defect on how its sealed on mine or the model itself. Some other things I've mentioned in other comments: they are not a true deep black but more off and greyish. Toes have plenty of wiggle room which is nice. You really have to pull them off as the ankle is snug but I think that's what helps with the warmth.

What winter gear do you recommend?
I ordered Baffin Impact boots last year and so far love them. From sitting in a tree stand to shovelling snow down to -35ish I have yet to have cold feet. I ordered a size larger than usual to have space to layer socks as well, but haven’t needed to yet.

I ordered some ice bugs since they have studded soles and I’m tired of slipping on the ice in MN. I found they ran a little big and are a wider toe box so I can swap in an orthotic if I need it. Baffin and Santana run real small, I can’t even squeeze into an 11 and I wear a women’s 10.5. Keens are ok. I have Royal Canadian for subzero days and danner boots that are warm with some arch support. Sorels seem so cheaply made now. I’ve been looking for wool insulated boots as they breathe better and I dislike the faux shearling inner.

I have bunions on both feet, narrow ankles, and high arches, and they are sooo supportive and look like the day I bought them. They are pricey (I got mine half off at $125), but like, I see where every dollar went with the quality; they still look brand new. They have less substantial options as well, if you’re not looking to attain arctic-exploration levels of boot-ness, such as I unintentionally did with these Baffin boots, though I couldn’t be happier about it. And they’re from Canada. I like Canada. And they know their shit. Might be worth a look. Good luck!

Baffin makes plenty of pull on boots and they're great, and they're ludicrously warm. I wear them snowmobiling and I don't even have to wear thick socks with my Baffins, I can just wear normal cotton socks.

While I live out East I spent 4 years just north in Thunder Bay, and also did a dog sledding expedition in the Boundary Waters area of Northern Minnesota. The layering socks system is vip. Many dress socks are of the kind of material. You need any sweat to move away from the foot. I have a pair of Baffins that I really like. They are pack boots with that removable liner. I feel like the liner is helpful for drying quicker. While mine are not 100% water proof they mostly are. But the need to dry out can come from the general sweat of your foot not outside contact with wetness. I wouldn't wear them here for most of our winters because typically we have a short season of a deep freeze and the rest is a freeze thaw repeat slush season. But in those deep freezes or times when we have more powder snow when I'm doing winter pruning in the vineyard they are great!

Looking for water proof work shoes/boots
Mucks are nowhere near BIFL. (Context: I live on the Oregon coast and practically live in rain boots late fall through early spring) My first pair (purchased in 2018) lasted for 14 years. My husband and I have both tried them more recently and they lasted for about 6 months before the plastic split. Our local farm store quit carrying Mucks due to their decline in quality. I have a pair of Baffins that I really like (besides neoprene repair due to sharp brush, they’re going strong after 5 years). You might want to look at leather horseback riding boots (that’s my next move). You’d need to treat the leather periodically but they should last a lot longer. My Lowa hiking boots also stay really dry in rain and stream crossings so a good quality hiking boot might also work for you.

It can be refinished if it needs it, we're waiting till our kids move out for University before refinishing.

I've been wearing my men's Baffin Hunter Boots in Calgary's -23 degrees celsius weather (-9.4 F) and my toes are toasty on walks. They are solid, made in Canada, and insanely comfortable! Sorels just aren't made the same as they were 30 years ago, so Baffin to the rescue!
