  Moccamaster. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.

  i grind pretty fine (15/40 clicks on my baratza virtuoso, where for pour over i am usually in the 18-22 range) and let the grounds saturate on 1/2 pot flow rate before locking the basket in and allowing it to drain and complete brewing. ratio is 1:16, 50:800. it definitely requires a bit more work to get it dialed than an OXO but once you get it you won’t want to go back. good luck!!! and if you’ve got the glass carafe, it’s a good idea to keep a backup spare in case it ever breaks.

  My buddy is a coffee expert and told me to buy a Mocca master and baratza grinder and I did. And a French press and I did. But at the end of the day my favorite cup of coffee comes from really good quality coffee and the simple pour over. Even the MoccaMaster can’t fix Folgers

  If you are just starting out, get a Bialetti Moka pot and a decent grinder, like a Baratza Encore. Using whole bean coffee, freshly ground, and having a decent grinder, is more important in this price range, and the Moka pot is a true BIFL product, at most it will need replacement gaskets over time.

  Let’s Talk Wirecutter: What Was Worth It and What Wasn’t?

  I was going to suggest the OXO 8 cup brewer as a solid pick. I haven’t had an issue with it, and it’s so much better than the keurig it replaced (for both small and large doses). Wirecutter also recommended the Baratza grinder, which I’d recommend as well.

  True espresso specifically or like, just some sorta coffee? Great espresso is kind of an expensive hobby. Grinders that go that fine are pricey, good espresso machines with basic convenience features are expensive, and it’s a whole thing to dial it in, if you’re that kind of coffee person.  A manual espresso machine and a good grinder can get you there for less, but it’s a workout. A basic filter coffee like on a chemex on the other hand is pretty affordable.  Or an espresso like beverage from a moka pot or aeropress.  Get a baratza encore, a basic scale, a basic hot water kettle, and your pick of brewer (aeropress, v60, chemex, kalita, clever dripper, French press).

  Just moved & looking for a new coffee machine; want to get into “real” coffee. Any Black Friday recommendations?

  \+1 for the usual reco on r/espresso for the Breville Bambino Plus and a good grinder (Baratza Encore Esp) for around $600. Will require a learning period of how to properly prepare espresso but it's a great entry machine with the features you want and within your price point.

  Great suggestions for other categories already posted, but the answer to your two specific requests would be one of the Baratza coffee grinders (Encore, Virtuoso, etc. depending on how fancy you're feeling), and stone mortar+pestle for spices. Electric grinders for spices are faster, but produce very fine dust that's nearly impossible to clean. So everything you grind will eventually emerge with a hint of cumin.

  I had a Baratza Encore that held up to heavy-duty use for years before the motor gave out. I replaced it with a Virtuoso five years ago and gave the old one away to someone who might repair it. About a week later, the electrical tinkerer reached out and said that she fixed it for something like $50 including expedited shipping and would I like it back? I had already settled on the upgrade so was happy to give it away, but even more impressed by Baratza that they could get out a replacement motor within a few days including shipping so cheaply for the new owner!

  If you just want one, get a decent coffee burr that can do fine & coarse. Might cost more but you won’t hate your first latte or espresso. If I had to pick: Baratza Encore or Breville Smart Grinder Pro.

  (1) Scale with a tare function.  Get one that doesn't turn off too fast. (2) Infrared thermometer. Tells you when your pan or griddle is hot enough and when it's too hot.  Will also tell you if your HVAC is blowing hot or cold air and how hot your sidewalk is. (3) Slotted spatula  The Baratza Encore is our coffee grinder. One downside is that I'm always cleaning up the little bit of ground coffee that escaped.

  Break it down and get a ceramic V60 or an Aeropress. You can buy all the replacement bits for an Aeropress when you need to. I use a Baratza grinder which is fantastic. You can buy all replacement parts for rust, including new circuit board if required, and Baratza have a whole range of guidelines for repair on their website

  I have the cheapest Baratza. The coffee is great, but one other important thing that it has for BIFL-ness is that replacement parts are readily available. The “ring burr holder” around the upper burr is plastic and has three apparently fragile tabs that stick out. Those have broken on me multiple times, and you notice since the grind becomes coarse and inconsistent.   I found a used baratza virtuoso and completely refurbed it myself. I think I came in under $150. It needed a couple inexpensive consumable parts, but if you are at all handy, this is a great way to go.

  I can add some accolades for a Baratza, but I don't know which one I have. It's electric, fully adjustable, and has been working flawlessly every day for a few years now. Kind of pricey for a grinder though; ironically way more than the little moka pot I use to actually *make* coffee.

  DF54 or DF64 if you're willing to measure and use the amount you're looking to use right there and then. I've got a Breville, Baratza, and a DF64. Started with the Breville, upgraded to the Baratza, that broke and I replaced it with a DF64. The base model DF54 and DF64s use a large brushed induction motor with the grinder bolted to the shaft of the motor. When switch fails someday, you can wire any old switch to it. If you ever get a bag of beans with a rock in it and don't catch it, you can replace the burrs. QC can be an issue, you just need to check it when you buy it, make sure the balance isn't terribly off. If it's fine and the machining is fine, it'll probably last a lifetime.

  Another vote for the Baratza Encore. I've had mine for almost a decade. It's been rock solid. The best part about Baratza as a company is that they sell replacement parts. You can basically rebuild your entire grinder with OEM parts. I actually just replaced both burrs as part of the suggested maintenance. Fit and finish was perfect. I didn't do the M2 upgrade, though. I didn't see the need.

  For about half your budget, you can get the absolutely excellent Baratza Encore that will last you as long as you want it to. It does a great job of a consistent grind for what you're doing, it's mechanically simple, it's made to be serviceable, and every replacement part is readily available. Stop thinking and get an Encore. You'll be happy with it I promise.

  These were built to be rebuilt. On the Felco website you can order almost any part of any model individually or as a kit. What other products could be given the ship of theseus treatment like this?

  I got a carafe from Eva Solo, and my grinder from Baratza. A small mechanical and adjustable scale to tare my beans before grind, and a kettle with a 195F setting... don't know for sure which of these will last the distance, but it's a very sustainable thing

  Love the Barataza. Don't love replacing the burr casing as often as I have to. Probably need to do a better job of turning the size adjustment slower- I drink espresso and wife drinks pour over, so it gets adjusted multiple times a day.

  Baratza will also repair and upgrade their own products. I recently had to swap out a motor and belts and wanted steel burrs and it got to the point it just felt easier to have them do it. It was great and would highly recommend.

  Yup, totally agree with that answer. Grinder first (for consistency of particles size). One important thing about grinders: there is only few options that allow to grind for both pour-over/drip AND espresso. Baratza ESP encore is one of them. And I think the Niche Zero is another. Moccamaster is great, and seems build to last (I have mine since a few years, I descale it any time I open a new box of filters, and it makes the same coffee as day 1). V60 is a great and affordable option if you want to get into manual pour over. All products from Hario are fine. A kettle is necessary. A gooseneck temperature controlled kettle is a nice to have upgrade. Consider buying an accurate scale (regular kitchen scales are not so accurate, and on 15gr of beans, one gram more or less goes a long way, taste wise). Hario VST-2000 is a good option. If you want to go portable at some point (which is probably going to be, since falling into coffee is a never ending pit of compulsive buys), You can look into the regular Aeropress, and a proper handgrinder. r/Coffee is a great place to get feedback on what you intend to buy before you push the cart button.   Wife poured water into my Baratza Encore and rusted the burrs. 15 bucks and a week later I have a replacement burr at my doorstep. The only downside was actually opening the thing up, the plastic shell was a pain to get open. But easy to replace after that

Their machines are designed to be serviced or repaired should the need arise (which is rarely). But when your grinder is 15 years old, you may need a fix. Baratza creates online video content that features service or repair procedures, and their customer service is top notch should you have any questions. Wish more brands were like this.

  The Lelit Anna 2 (PL41TEM) paired with a decent grinder (Baratza Esp for automatic or Kingrinder K6 for manual) is the sweet spot. If you don’t have a limited budget, you can go for something like La Marzocco + a fancy grinder, but you’ll be spending 10x more money for only a 10% improvement in coffee quality. This is an espresso setup—I don’t drink other types of coffee. Be aware that once you step into the world of espresso, it’s like a drug—you’ll always crave better and MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE equipment.

  We love our Gaggia Classic. It was a little spendy, but it’s amazing. It stops us from buying coffees all the time, and I work from home a lot of days. So we splurged. For grinders we have a Baratza encore grinder. We do regular upkeep and maintenance and it’s been going strong for a good 6 years. They also have replacement parts you can easily get to repair parts yourself. We keep up maintenance and it pays off.

  If you want easy and BIFL, get a nespresso pixie and one of their milk frothers. If you are going to get a semi-auto machine and grinder - keep in mind that its a hobby and it will be 6-8 months before you start pulling the kind of shots that you're proud of. Gaggia Classic, Profitec, Rancilio, Rocket, maybe Breville here. For grinder - Bartaza Virtuoso or Vario. On the fully auto side, Jura will probs be just outside your price range. Terra Kaffe TK-02 is. I own one (was a gift) and its fine but probably not BIFL.

  It depends how much you want to work and how much money you have. Do you want to just press a button or tamp the beans yourself? I started with a Gaggia Classic. The thing I learned is the grinder makes a huge difference. If you can get the beans to be a very fine grind it will slow the flow of water and make great espresso. Now I use a Lelit Elizabeth and a Baratza grinder. Love them and not too pricey.

  My BIFL trio. Worth every penny

  I would have picked a Baratza or Eureka(what I use with my Moccamaster). The Breville isn't terrible, but as a coffee nerd it wouldn't be my first choice. In general I've had poor experiences with Breville kitchen products.

  Also this is the hand grinder I was gifted, HEIHOX Hand with Adjustable Conical Stainless Steel Burr Mill. Honestly, I thought I wouldn't really use this thing, but if you do really like coffee and have high quality beans around I highly recommend buying it. I ended up traveling with it to my parents so I could have a consistent grind with their coffee machine, and we use it on trips. Almost every french press is by for life as well and a good tool to have around also for traveling or if you don't feel like warming up an espresso machine to pull shots. As for my baratza grinder I have the Vario which is still a great grinder. It's just going to cost $600 to $700. I paid $116 to get it repaired not counting some of the parts I had to replace on my own last year which was approximately $60. So for 12 years that's pretty good. Baratza even sent me some free parts, their customer service is a little slow but really great. If you don't use light roast beans Encore ESP is great and I think it's around $160. The espresso community recommends the best cheapest grinder as the DF54 and the DF64 as one step above that. If I remember correctly it starts at $250. The only thing else you would have to buy is a good tamper since neither of these machines come with a metal one.

  For me (a filter coffee/french press drinker): *Ceramic Hario V60 dripper with Hario paper filters (thrifted) * A digital scale that measures in 0.10 g increments * Baratza Encore grinder (if I were an espresso drinker, would go for a Baratza Esp) * Bodum french press (though in my case I wouldn’t call the glass ones BIFL because… glass and ADHD don’t mix well) For those times when I fancy something more akin to an espresso, I’ve got a Vev Viganò moka pot, stainless steel (18/10), made in Italy, that I bought 10 years ago. Also have a larger Vev Viganò (if I have guests) that I found at a thrift store about 15 years ago. Have only needed to change tge rubber gasket. All this said and done, good quality whole beans and soft, tasty, clean water is where to start. Before getting the Baratza I used a Mr Coffee burr grinder and only had the French Press. 1000% difference already from in-store ground beans Also, highly recommend checking out James Hoffmann’s YT channel for how-tos and product recommendations in a variety of price ranges!

  A nice grinder is going to give you the best starting point. Barazza Encore is a good one, and if you are patient, you can get one refurbished or used.  That, plus a moka pot will get you quite a ways for under $150. Gently used moka pots can often found in thrift stores.  These are the gateway into madness.

  For espresso you can’t get more bulletproof than a gaggia classic. Grinder probably a little less bifl but baratza esp is good for the money and all the parts are available online for replacing. Just make sure you do regular maintenance on both and you’ll be making high quality espresso for years to come.
