Women’s BIFL trench coat
I’ve had Barbour hooded 3/4 length waxed cotton coats for years, and so has my partner. They’re superb. And if a seam fails or a hem wears thin or it needs a reproofing you don’t want to handle yourself, they’ll redo/fix it for you (though it’s not free). They’ll even take in sleeves that are too long, or change the lining for a different material, if you want, etc. I don’t know what model names are these days, but even if they don’t make the model you want anymore: a fine condition secondhand one isn’t a bad idea. All 3 of ours have been, and I’ve had no regrets, fwiw.

I recently got the Barbour Winter Sapper. It’s a wax jacket with a warm quilting. I’m really happy with it, tested it to 4 degrees C and in light rain. It seems very well made, and you can re-wax it as needed. Or as someone else mentioned, the regular Barbour and layer / get the zip in liner.

As I write this, I'm wearing my Wolverine boots (12 years old), Kuhl pants (11 years), Irish wool sweater (21 years), and Barbour jacket (41 years), and Omega watch (21 years). BIFL is real. It does come at the cost of choosing a style and sticking with it. Easier for a man, but doable regardless.

I was beater as a kid (first job). All the beaters would wear Barbour waxed jackets and for years I wore mine. I was in out of hedge rows being a kid fitted in all the small places to flush and it never had any issue. Some of the other beaters had theirs for 30+ years of service. I am thoroughly disappointed that I had to scroll this far down to find someone bring up the wear and tear culture, but good job. The Barbour jackets aren't high fashion, but practical outdoor jackets for certain outdoor pursuits. If the stories about jackets sent in for repairs having pockets with forgotten dog treats, dead mice, shot shells or bird feathers didn't tip you off to it, that's the common understanding. If you're still not sold on it, look at the old catalogues, there's a lookbook for you. They're going to get cuts and scrapes, and you're supposed to mend it, and it is commonly understood that mended cuts and scrapes and faded wax patches are a part of the look. Since it is a cotton garment, it's not hard to maintain either, and therein lies its BIFL quality - it is easy to mend and do upkeep on. I'm not very good at sewing, so I leave it with a seamstress once the season for wearing it is over, and when I get it back I give it a re-waxing, air it out, and hang it away. For most people, there's very little need for sending it to Barbour for repairs unless the jacket has seen massive damage.

He wears it daily. I definitely would call that a legacy piece. I can imagine that, as with everything else in the world, the quality might not be what it used to be.

I try to do it every other year or so, and it's honestly kind of a fun ritual for me at this point. I can totally see how if you never bother with the maintenance, it could end up looking rough, but with a little care, they last forever. Definitely worth the investment if you’ll actually use it!

Wristwatches, in general. I’m not wholly loyal to any one particular brand, but with any watch I’ve made a conscious decision to buy, it’s never let me down. Brands include: Casio, Seiko, Oris, Rado, Mido, Timex, Vostok, Tudor, Rolex, Jaeger leCoultre, even a microbrand called Zelos. My advice is waxed cotton jackets like Barbour, and marine fishing raincoats. When I was a little kid in the 80s and we had heavyweight rubberized “Mackintosh” style raincoats with big square external patch pockets like you see on Paddington the bear. They lasted 10-15 years before they started to crack up. I wish I could find those again! Most modern waterproof-breathable fabric and coatings are filled with PFAs (forever chemicals), so I no longer buy those. Also they were pricey and didn’t last.

Ever Bought Something That Quietly Changed You?
A few things come to mind, all of them purchased or received as gifts decades ago and have been in regular if not daily use since: -Barbour waxed jackets and hat (I live in a climate where it’s wet Oct-at least May. I have them repaired and reproofed as needed, have replaced one barn jacket that was finally EOL after more than 20 years. Even in the nastiest sideways sleet, every part of me covered by Barbour is dry and comfortable. -Set of Calphalon anodized aluminum pots and pans (quality back in the day was different than today, brand has probably changed ownership multiple times since I received these from my parents as an apartment-warming gift). They heat evenly and clean up easily, total workhorses. Still my everyday go-to pots and pans. And I do mean every day - we eat almost all meals at home and I’m the primary cook. -Set of Henckels knives I bought at Costco as one of my first big adult kitchen tool splurges. I’ve kept them sharpened and have always hand washed them. When my brother in law, who is French and an accomplished home chef, visited recently and was helping us prep pizza toppings, he complimented us on the quality and sharpness of our knives. And he’s Definitely not the type of guy who tosses out compliments like candy at a parade, is very opinionated. -The absolute beast that is my SEBO upright vacuum (could probably strip wallpaper with it). -The circa 1920s shell edge Wedgwood china we use every day. It’s beautiful, looks delicate, but still goes in the dishwasher without an issue. Makes even the most basic omelet or tuna sandwich look kinda fancy. My mom bought the whole set (service for 12 with serving pieces!) at a garage sale for practically nothing. -The solid maple queen sized Mission style bed frame my parents bought for me when I moved into my first apartment. Today? Different mattress of course, but bed frame still going strong and practically unscathed, even after multiple long-distance moves.

Filson has, by all accounts, gone majorly downhill in recent years. Can’t say I’d ever have put Fjallraven on a similar level with them or Barbour, but maybe I’m not giving them enough credit. In any case, they use mostly synthetic materials. I personally have a soft spot for Barbours. You could also look at Belstaff

I think you need to be careful with the new ones - Barbour has brought in some diffusion lines and moved a bit toward fast fashion stuff in recent years. I would expect you can still get OG waxed jackets because there are certain consumers in their market that wouldn’t settle for anything else, but would advocate quite a lot of research before springing for one.

I will say my Barbour waxed jacket. I have had mine for over 14 years now and I only send it in to get waxed periodically. I wear it in multiple ways from going to the bar all the way to pheasant hunting. I love their jackets and I can’t recommend them enough. I remember when I was walking into Orvis to pick up my first one with my dad and there was a guy in there that was sending his jacket in to Barbour to get rewaxed. It was his grandfathers jacket and he had to for over 20 years. Can’t beat the quality

I have a barbour jacket (don’t know how old but surely 10+ years) and it’s fantastic, keeps me warm and dry during spring and autumn. Aran is great for sweaters, I have 2 knitted sweaters and a wool blanket all of which is holding up great. Just gotta make sure to care for your stuff and even cheap things will last long.

Anyone have experience with Barbour jackets?
I find it's not to be worn with short sleeves underneath - will be clammy. I wear mine for winter here on the west cost of Canada. Not for summer wear. Most comfortable with a flannel shirt underneath. When colder,I wear a fleece jacket underneath or sweater or a very light down jacket . A wool jac shirt works well too. Sheds rain adequately, although I do wear for heavy outdoor use or strenuous exercise. By varying what I wear underneath, it is warm enough for the west coast. Prior to living here, I lived in Alberta. I would not even bother owning one there; it's just not suitable for the climate.

buying pricier quality clothes from the beginning is the wise investment. I too have clothing from quality designer brands, that are older than my two college-aged children. I buy higher-end clothing secondhand, usually on eBay. People outgrow nicer stuff or lose their taste for it but usually take better care of it, so you're more likely to get a like-new item with nicer garments. I found a $500 Schott peacoat for $90, and a Barbour jacket for $75.

All season stylish jacket for men in EU (€200 budget)
Barbour Classic line, either Bedale (relatively standard jacket length) or Beaufort (a bit longer, very popular, there is also the Border which is even longer down to the knees). I think it may be a bit over budget but it is very stylish, timeless and durable. The classic line is made in UK, not sure about the regular. Not the warmest on its own but I usually wear fleece underneath, it's great for layering.

In response to the post about BIFL being an excuse to over spend.
As we are on topic about the subject BIFL (sub) already, there are reasons for me to no longer contribute to this sub. No hard feelings, but a lot of contributors seem to think this is “How cheap can it be and not fall apart?”. Let’s be real here, it’s not about fashion, designer, or influencer brands, but as well not about how low can you go. A real BIFL item will have a certain price point that comes with the quality of material and craftsmanship. Take a wax-cotton jacket as an example. Sure you can get some for 100-200 bucks and they’ll be good. But if you get, let’s say, a Barbour, that’s a true BIFL item. They have a repair service and their jackets can be (and are) passed down generations. As my opinion seems to be snobbish to a lot of people in here, I’ll rather shut my trap. That said, I’ll keep,it with OP and keep lurking.

Request: Winter Jacket, temp range approx. -10°C to 10°C, wind/sleet more than snow, will pay premium for natural fabrics.
A tightly “woven” felted wool coat with proper layering underneath is absolutely warm in moderate wind in my experience. Rain, somewhat. My wool coat has never bothered me in “damp cold” right around freezing, but I don’t wear it if it’s genuinely raining out. It just won’t shed rain like a waterproof coat will. Waxed cotton is pretty good for that in my experience, but nothing beats (and I know you’re trying to avoid it) synthetic for serious rain.

I got a classic Barbour jacket earlier this year and so far I'm extremely impressed. I think it's because they're made in exactly the same way as they've been made for decades. However, I got some socks from them recently and they were very poorly constructed. I suspect that all of their brand expansions will be similar. Certainly everything about the company, it's marketing and styling, creeps me out. But those classic jackets are just perfect.

Most of the items that can be best described as “thick solid piece of metal” are BIFL and will remain so — with a bit of care and maintenance. Le Creuset / Staub / similar Dutch ovens. Good cast-iron or stainless steel pans. Knives (the sharpener is actually more important than the knife). A tea-pot. Etc. We also have more, better looking and cheaper furniture and home decorating items. A vase is a chunk of ceramics or glass — you may tire of its style but that’s as BIFL as can be. Same for plates, cutlery etc. I’ve never considered _any_ cloth as BIFL yet again it’s not hard to find BIF-15 or BIF-20 stuff (ie, for 15-20 years). Barbour, some DocMartens, a nice leather jacket, a high-end winter coat or parka. As before, a bit of care and maintenance may be required. Some brands _have_ lost their quality standards. Birkenstock for example, DocM as I hear it.

What material water-resistant jackets are most breathable?
Waterproof Jackets come in roughly three categories: Absolutely waterproof rubber "foul weather gear" is not breathable at all but a good option for a cape. Gore Tex and similar synthetic materials are water resistant and can be quite breathable dependant on the quality. However they contain PFAS, also known as eternity chemicals which are quite harmful to the environment, and if not reapplyed regularly with a spray your garment will literally fall apart after a while. Waxed cotton or waxed linen can be waterproof to water resistant depending on how much you wax it. The breathability is also dependent on how much you wax it, but you can vary the level of wax, and for example not wax the underarm area. The wax will need to be reapplyed to keep the water resistant qualities, but your garment will last a long time even without it (just won't be as waterproof anymore) I personally prefer waxed cotton garments because I like the feel of the fabric more and because of environmental reasons. Fjällräven has good opinions for a mix between cotton and synthetic that also can be waxed that is the best option for activities like trekking and hiking. For everyday use waxed cotton without snythetics like Barbour jackets are my favourite.

Unpopular Opinion: "BIFL" as an excuse for overspending
Last 4 months, I rewaxed my 30 years old Barbour that used to be my dad's, changed temples on my Oliver Peoples prescription glasses I have had since 2018 and changed lenses on my Persol sunglasses I have had since 2017. I have shoe trees for my Sebago boat shoes that I purchased in 2021. Despite wearing them at least 6 months a year, they still look new, no doubt thanks to the frequent conditioning and changing laces when they break. If done well, BIFL is the opposite of consumerism.

Just to expand on this a bit: I have no fashion sense and I'm not wild about the entire concept. For a long time I thought Barbour was about being fashionable and hip so I had no interest in it. I came across an old Beaufort at Goodwill for $7 and I bought it thinking I'd resell it on ebay. I wore it a few times to try it out and it quickly became my favorite jacket for the temperatures OP is talking about. My coat was manufactured in the 80s and, though it shows it's age, it still works perfectly and is very comfortable. I'll still use a technical hardshell if I'm hiking or backpacking since the Barbour is much heavier, but for just walking around town I go with the Barbour every time.
