  What’s something you’ve bought once and never had to replace?

  The second I bought more than 1-3 pairs of shoes for every situation: all my shoes started lasting an absurd amount of time. Like I can’t even remember a pair of shoes I threw out, minus like busting a flip flop beyond glueing back. It’s had to be a decade at this point. Also, took some 80’s cowboy boots out my dad’s closet that he never wore recently. I bought some wranglers. I’m pretty stoked to have something other than my bean boots for colder weather. And all my ex work boots cuz I need steel toes now. All Goodyear welted. I probably have 4 pairs of sneakers and only wear 2 often. I beat the shit out of every sandal/flip flop I get my hands on. I recently bought a pair of molehinders and regret not finding the cheaper alternatives on Etsy beforehand. I’m currently using a random pair of quicksilver flip flops after coming from rainbows and Birkenstocks. Always ruin them somehow. I’m hoping to try bedrock sandals soon. I think it’ll fit the bill.

  Prolonging the life of shoe soles

  I wear bedrock sandals almost daily and they hold up great plus they are re-soleable. Bedrock also makes a durable clog that may work for mild winters where no snow is involved.

  Should Birkenstock soles look this bad after 1 year of occasional use?

  Birkenstocks just fall apart for some people, I think it's related to gait patterns. Personally, I think Bedrock is a lot better of a sandal. I used to work at a Birkenstock store... Never get them wet!

  Hiking sandals that aren’t disposable?

  Throwing another vote on here for Bedrocks. I was previously a long-time Chacos fan, and then finally figured out I was getting blisters at the beginning of every summer because the arch was too high for my feet. It only took about a week to adjust to the Bedrock toe strap, and I prefer it now over the Chacos style. As a bonus, they're a lot lighter than Chacos for traveling/backpacking.

  Birkenstocks for everyday sandals, or Bedrock sandals if you want a pair of hiking sandals that can double-time as casual sandals Basic canvas sneakers (e.g. Converse) for quick and casual errands, or leather sneakers if you want something a bit smarter. I personally like Converse slip-ons (they look like laceless versions of the All-Stars) An inexpensive pair of Goodyear welted boots (e.g. Thursday Captain) for everything else. Just go Asian-style and wear socks or go barefoot indoors instead of dedicated "lounge shoes."

  have had a pair of the clogs for a similar amount of time as you and cannot agree more about the build quality. I get a suprising amount of compliments on them too. Great traction, and the waterproof aspect of the clogs lets me wear them year round in MN

  Name your top 5 BIFL items

  Pioneer 10mm lever lifting belt - I think I am at 8 years with the thing and it is as good now as it was the day I bought it (better even, its broken in). I will not squat or deadlift without it. I will NEVER use another brand, If these guys ever go out of business I am going to buy an extra in my size and one a size up or a size down from my size so I always have one. They released a better lever (or so I hear, it looks like it can be more finely adjusted) and while I want it, I literally have a perfectly fine belt that looks like it will never die. The only way I would get the new one is if I lose enough weight/ gain enough weight to need a different size (slim/fat chance that will happen any time soon). Red Wing Iron Rangers - No other boot or shoe has lasted me this long, and it is not close. Customer service is outstanding and the only shop that has ever made me feel like they cared about me after I have spent money. I bring the boots in once or twice a year and they clean them up, oil them, and put on new laces for free, last time they even replaced all the rivets for free. When the sole finally goes I will have them re-sole it, and while that will cost it will be no where near what I would have paid for anything comparable. These boots have saved me money in the long run, which is saying a lot given they are like over $300. Rogue Gym Equiptment - I have a RML-490c rack, an Ohio Bar, a stainless steel power bar, some adjustable dumbbells, a sandbag, and all of it is top notch. I went with "buy once cry once" so I do not know how other stuff stacks up, its mostly steel after all, but Rogue has been wonderful and looks very nice. Titan is probably also great, but I haven't bought yet. Vitamix - After burning through three magic/nutri/whatevername bullets in a year I found a Vitamix on market place, and it just goes and goes and goes. I really could blend anything. I thought it was a little extra at first, because it was more than I had spent on any other counter top appliance, even used, but it is well worth it. It sure was less than the three broken blender combined. Steelcase Leap 2 desk chair - I got this chair used about 6 months after covid turned my workplace into work form home. It is just as good as the day I bought it. Watched some videos on how to properly personalize and adjust it and it is great. Well worth the spend. Honorable mentions: Bedrock Sandals. I lost my first pair during a float, but they were two years old and still going strong. My brother in law has had his for about twice that time and has had them resoled by the company at a decent price. Again, I tear through shoes, so two years out of that first pair is remarkable for sandals. Second pair is only a couple of months old, but they feel just as good. I really love all of my modular synths. Every time I have reached out to a maker for support they have replied so quickly and with such a good attitude. Make Noise, Joranalogue, Intellijel, Doepfer, NerdSEQ (seemingly one person, hello Thomas), and Erica Synths. Special shoutout to Erica Synths who saw that I could not get a piece to a shop and just sent me the exact part number to order so I could fix it myself. Special shoutout to NerdSEQ because Thomas is a monster developer who just gives his whole heart to this thing. He is still making better firmware, he is still answering questions in the discord and the forums. This is his baby and it shows every single day, what amazing work. It is an expensive hobby because of this, and I got most of my set up through some really lucky (for me) auctions and trades, but when I do buy new I love supporting these guys.

  Absolutely love these sandals. I wear them daily on all terrains. I did leave mine out to dry on a porch in Costa Rica during the summer and they shrunk a bit. They’re molded to my feet now, it’s great haha. I never see anyone else wearing them and they’re missing out. I’ll wear them forever.

  Bedrock sandals are worth every penny. They are made in the US, have several different styles and have an outstanding warranty. Even when damage isn’t covered by warranty they still fix them for a very reasonable price. I have had mine for 3 deployments, one of which I wore them on an almost daily basis over rocks and desert in Eastern Africa.   Best walking/daily shoes for traveling?

  Bedrock mountain clogs nubuck leather. Just bought my second pair while I have the first resoled. Expensive and ugly for a clog but I have worn them across 4 countries, hiked, walked, and worked in them and they stand out as the most rugged zero drop do all lazy footwear I have ever had and I love them.

  Quoddy makes more women’s styles. Subu or Bedrocks for slip-on type of shoes. Grenson, Tricker’s, Crockett and Jones, Rolling Dub Trio, etc., for everything else. Carmina if you can find anything that’s not made in the last couple years. Definitely look for the Japan-based shoemakers too, sizing is usually unisex. There is a thread on r/Goodyearwelt for women’s shoes.

  The tongue of English lacks the words I need to convey to you how truly incredible Bedrock sandals are. After years of skateboarding my feet would hurt constantly if I stood for too long. Bedrocks completely changed my life. The first week you may need to build up some calluses, but don’t be deterred.

  Searching for a Great Pair of Flip Flops - Reefs?

  Bedrock sandals. Have a long warranty and have a sole replacement program for if/when you wear out the current ones. They also have 3D footbed options for arch support, and I believe have come out with different cushion levels since I bought a pair 6 years ago.

  Bedrock Sandals are bifl. And the best grip of any footwear I’ve ever worn. I’ve been rock climbing and slack lining in them and they’re truly to write home about.

  I bought some Bedrock Cairne Pro (not 3d) for my firld work job (lots of walking on gravel, mud, slippery rocks on the edge of and in the water of lakes and rivers) in August 2023, did part of a field season that year and another this year using them and they've been the best out of many sandals I've tried. Very grippy soles and protective sides, they hold onto my feet well (I haven't had too many occasions of them getting pulled off my feet by mud). They haven't worn out yet (in the past I'd had to switch out sandals and water shoes as I'd break holes in them due to the rocks rubbing on the sides). No blisters on my feet either so far, which I had issues with from other brands and types! They look almost new still (aside from some sunscreen stains). So far so good.
