  a couple quick notes about making coffee with mokapot that worked for me: fill the chamber with loose coffee grounds, DO NOT PACK IT when heating on the stove, i never go about medium heat, it takes me roughly five-ish minutes on average to get the brew i sprinkle a pinch of KOSHER SALT on top of the grounds to cut the bitterness HAPPY BREWS! :)

  Just get a manual one. Any will do, Mr. Coffee, Bialetti, Grosche, etc. The first drip of coffee that comes out pour into a cup with sugar. If you whip the sugar/espresso mix correctly you’ll end up with a sweet froth to use on top of your espresso. That’s how the Italians I know make it.

  Nice choice! A couple of tips: the pot is practically eternal but the plastic details are not; with no rush, you might want to stash a repair kit for those parts. If you want to use it for half the cups, there are filters with a reducer, so you can make three tazzine that are ok for two people and use it more often. Finally: I know every family in Italy has a different opinion on this, but in mine a new moka must be seasoned; we run through a packet of cheap coffee without using it, washing it with just water. Some powder doesn’t get washed away and I intimately believe that gives each moka its fingerprint. Enjoy!

  Just get a stovetop Bialetti moka pot. Making espresso should not be a hobby, expensive, or overcomplicated. You can even use Melania D’Orio ground coffee. Do as the Italian immigrants is America do.

  If you are just starting out, get a Bialetti Moka pot and a decent grinder, like a Baratza Encore. Using whole bean coffee, freshly ground, and having a decent grinder, is more important in this price range, and the Moka pot is a true BIFL product, at most it will need replacement gaskets over time.

  A moka pot is about $40. Bialetti (sp?) is a good brand. I think a 3 cup one is good for a single cup at a time. Preheat the water reservoir, then fill it with boiling water right before you put it on the stove. Makes a good stovetop equivalent of espresso.

  The Brikka has a special pressure valve on the chimney that holds back the flow and lets a bit more pressure build up before it opens. This higher pressure and the narrowed outlet whip the coffee oils into that crema‑like layer on top. Regular moka pots don’t have this valve they just have a safety valve on the bottom chamber, so you normally get much less foam on top.

  SAFE alternative to Bunn MyCafe Coffee Maker?

  I guess it depends on how you use it. If you want something that automatically makes coffee on a timer versus you watching something on the stove. I personally love a small moka pot. Bialetti is a trusted brand, although they have been sold in recent years to a different company. I still think they make good moka pots. You do have to keep an eye on it since it’s on the stove though.

  Second the Brikka. The only reason we upgraded from Brikka to coffee machine was frothing milk. Otherwise the Brikka is amazing. Aeropress is also a great option, if you drink black coffee, (as opposed to espresso or milk coffees), then look at a Delter press. Looks similar to Aeropress but functions differently, and you can put all your water through the beans, instead of adding water at the end.

  What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it?

  I'm with you on everything except drop coffee. I can't deal with drip coffee. I need my coffee blazing hot and drip won't do it for me. I will go to my grave preaching the benefits of a stovetop pot. It turns even mediocre store bought grounds into hot magic. The pot will last forever as long as you buy the gaskets every few years. About a $7 investment. Despite being called an espresso pot, you can just use ground coffee. Play with the water to grounds ratio and it will pay you back in dividends, plus it will be hot hot hot.   take away the electronics if you want BIFL aeropress you need hot water, ground beans and a filter - portable Bialetti makes a rich Italian coffee, cook it low and slow like bbq (it goes from 2 cups up to 18 cup) and the old stand by: a percolator, they come in all price ranges and have been around for a long time. the GLASS knob at the top lets you choose your strength (go hot till the first perk, then lower the temp so no boil over) Pyrex even made a clear one you can still find so you can see it in action. find you favorite coffee snob, try each one to see what you like best. (taste, convenience, etc)

  I just got the Bialetti x Dolce & Gabbana moka pot for my gf and it’s really well made and looks great on the counter. All the rubber parts are removable and I don’t see it breaking down anytime soon. Bialetti in general have a reputation for making very long lasting moka pots.

  I have a range of coffee production equipment - Sage Espresso machine, French press, pour-over permanent filter, etc - but if I could only keep one, it would a Bialetti Mokapot. I use one at home and take one camping; it makes superb coffee; there is nothing to go wrong with it (replace the o-ring in time, I guess); and it’s fun to use.

  There are several BIFL options when it comes to coffee. They all depend on your coffee taste expectations and your budget. Here's a list of options: * Espresso - Gaggia Classic Pro, Rancillio Silvia, Lelit Bianca, Profitec pro 600 * Stovetop - Bialetti Moka lavazza * French press - there's a plethora of options out there, bodum being the classic * Pour over - V60, Chemex, Melitta, Kalitta. most of these require filters * Drip - It seems everyone here is a fan of the Moccamaster * Travel - Aeropress, wacaco (many options there) I've been using my Gaggia classic for about 7 yrs. Some parts have been fixed, but they are widely as well as tutorials. It's a simple machine that will last forever if cared for.

  honestly for affordable options, there is the chemex pour over and the bialetti mokkapot (more of an espresso maker), and then for drip coffee I think the zojirushi is often mentioned as a high quality product, albeit pricier. this is all more so thinking of whether you had guests, and wanted to offer options if they prefer a certain style of coffee. or just if you like to change it up from time to time.

  Moka pot is not as concentrated as a proper espresso. You can drink a bit more of it. I use a 6-pot stainless bialetti for basically two "regular" coffee mugs. It is enough to fill two normal mugs halfway and then I add some water to it (I do not like it too concentrated).

  Not quite every day but I like my Le Creuset stainless steel frying pan. I love the design, especially the handle, but it has a bit of a hot spot in the middle. I have to be careful when cooking bacon in it, but other than that I love it. I abuse the shit out of it as well as my other cookware from the same line, and my roasting pan, by using SOS pads on them. However, it's easier and I tend to be lazy about cleaning so that's the best I can do. I actually have a related product connected to that moka pot. A bialetti Musa. It's the medium one. I use it daily because it's pretty idiot-proof and I don't need to fuss with filters. It has some drawbacks in the design, so I'm looking to get a replacement percolator. I also have a drip coffee maker that I'll use eventually. Oh, and I also have a few lodge pans, including 3 of those little ones. With matching black silicone handle sleeves. I have a lot of cookware which I like having on hand but which never seem to get used. Maybe I should make pan brownies in the big cast iron pan...

  Bailetti stove top mocca pot (I know this subreddit preaches the moccamaster drip machine but TBH I don’t love filter coffee that much) Any cast iron frying pan (I’ll settle for a solid stainless steel one too, I have both). Personally I use lecruset just because a lot of the US brands often touted in the subreddit aren’t available where I live Good thick 100% cotton flannel with steel press buttons (the Australian brand critical slide is my favorite)

  I love my coffee and have tried various coffee makers. Fancy machines are over rated. The humble bialaetti moka pot is the best in my view. They come in different sizes so you can make as big of a pot as you like. I much prefer it to a french press as moka pot makes a stronger more flavourful coffee in my view. Chemex coffee make is also nice but moka pot is my daily driver.

  I upgraded my coffee machine...

  French press needs to be decent quality if it breaks easily. At least that’s my experience after owning three that broke and they were all kinda cheap. A Bialetti will last you forever.

  Going back to before electricity

  Only the classic alloy ones. I have the stainless steel Bialetti. It is designed for induction (but of course works on anything). The stainless version is also unaffected by a dishwasher. I always just hand rinse all the parts under a tap and that's it.

  Italiano here. I find it suspicious that a moka would cost 125 euro, when a Bialetti Venus 6 cup costs 30 - and you really can't do better than a Bialetti Venus. Simply because any other moka maker would know what they are competing with, both in quality and in price. The instant something \*isn't\* made for the coffee-drinking market, there's instant doubt on how good it is.

  Thank you, I appreciate it. I wish one could hear tone and inflection and voice when reading comments online. It’s hard for me to distinguish when someone is just stating something “matter-of-fact” and when someone is being condescending. It’s also the multiple down votes on my post that told me, ‘oh… guess this was not the place to post and the people in here are showing me their displeasure in disturbing their space by downvoting me.’ And then I just started reading everyone’s comments as condescending and displeased. But alright, I guess I read things wrong. But thank you. I’ll take what you’ve said into consideration and my spouse and I will discuss some more. We really like my SIL’s nespresso but when we looked into getting one ourselves online it’s out of our price range right now. I’m really intrigued by the “Bialetti - Moka Express” that I think two or three people have brought up now and it looks to be only about $38-$40 online. I know that’ll be in my husband’s alley as I said, he’s very frugal.

  I have a Bialetti 3 cup moka pot that I love for stovetop espresso drinks. If you like coffee as a hobby, it’s a nice little brew method to have. The smoothest/ best brew method I have is a percolator of unknown brand that I inherited from my great-grandma. I highly recommend one as the only way for it to fail is user error damaging the components. It also gives you great control over how strong your brew is and imo tastes noticeably smoother than drip coffee. I’ve only had it for a few years, but for drip coffee, my Braaun machine (would have to check Amazon history for the model) was around $120 and has all the features I want and need and brews a good coffee. Two brew strengths, can brew multiple pot sizes, auto-on, warming plate timer up to 5 hours.

Indestructible, last forever, makes great coffee, and when paired with their glass milk frother makes what everyone in my family says is “the best latte I’ve ever had in my life”. Easiest, quickest, cheapest way and so ecofriendly... we also move often, transcontinental and I'm therefore not only a minimalist, but also I need things that work everywhere (different plugs aso). Like you I love iced coffee only and I drink a lot. A few cups of espresso, ice cubes and off I go. We drink a hot one after dinner for digestion. I don't think the brand matters, it's just - I grew up nr Munich, from there Italy is the weekend break and Bialetti is everywhere... it's actually the only one I know, but I checked, there are others.

  I’ve used a Bialetti stovetop percolator for 15+ years with Cafe Bustelo espresso. Not sure if the bialetti brand even matters, but it’s the easiest, quickest, cheapest way to the perfect iced coffee (which I drink year round). It’s like <1 min prep, no waste, and basically foolproof. You can customize espresso to so many different preferences. I sometimes feel like ppl think it’s some hipster thing but to me it feels like a lazy adhd hack.

  You can buy larger moka pot, I think Bialetti makes 18 cup which is about 4 normal cups (800 ml). Workflow is pretty simple. Put water, put coffee, crew on top and place on heat until it boils.

  Bialetti is a good coffee maker. It is pretty cheap (around 50 euro for a large size Bialetti). The process of making coffee is straight forward. And it makes a strong cup of coffee. Also you don't need any fancy filters or equipment. And they last a long time (after some time you just need to change the gasket and filter because these things will go bad).

  Time permitting, I have a Breville, but for a quick shot (or 2 or 3...), I use my Nespresso Vertuo. I don't do a lot of espresso because of the serving size. I usually drink 15-20 oz. of coffee at a time. Since your retooling equipment, I might suggest you give Bialetti a try first before you go for a high end machine. I have four of them in different sizes, but the 9 size is the best for my needs. It would also give you the option of branching out into ground coffee blends. They are inexpensive and easy to maintain, just don't put them in the dishwasher. Remember, "Anything worth doing is worth doing to excess."

  La Pavoni Europiccola, if you’re looking for an espresso machine. (A manual, lever espresso machine specifically).  They aren’t cheap but they WILL last a lifetime (or at least many decades). if you can score a deal on a new one, or a used one, and get it for about $500 I think that’s a great price.  You'll need to replace some gaskets once or twice a year depending on how much you use it. But a gasket replacement set runs around 30 bucks or so and there are plenty of online instructions that will guide you through the process. Do some research before buying though…lever machines require a little more skill.  It’s not a “push a button and get your espresso" set up.  You will also need a good burr grinder to get the most out of your machine and those start around $500 or so. The burrs should last decades as well before you have to replace them. As a much cheaper alternative, you could get the Bialetti moka pot which others have recommended. It's not the same as actual espresso but makes good, strong coffee just the same. They'll last a very long time as well... you’ll just need to change the gaskets once in a while and, less often, the metal basket and screen. Be careful not to put the plastic handle over the heat or else you will end up with a very sad looking handle.  Oh and be sure to get the actual Bialetti brand...the off-brands are just a sad imitation.

  Bialetti Moka pots are workhorses. There are several across our family that have been going strong for multiple decades. My double-walled-stainless-steel "Le Cafetiere" cafetiere (French press) has been going for the better part of a decade and is as good as new (any steel cafetiere with a metal-only plunger/filter which you can disassemble will last a long time, less so the plastic/one-piece filters). I gave someone a hand grinder from "Made by Knock" five years ago; it has seen daily use and is like new. My "Clever Dripper" is less than a year old, so I can't speak to longevity, but it sees a lot of use and shows no sign of problems (and I find it so much less faff than an Aeropress).

  Bodum French press. The regular glass ones. I have two of them in different sizes they’re probably 15-20 years old. They don’t get much use these days because cleanup sucks when you don’t have a garbage disposal. Melitta pourover. I’ve had it since about 2009-2010. It cost less than $4 at the time and and still gets some use. It takes #2 filters that can be found in most supermarkets. Some people won’t like that it’s plastic. Capresso Infinity burr grinder. It’s over 10 years old at this point and still gets used 3-4x per week. Some would argue that it doesn’t grind fine enough for espresso but it does what I need it to do. Aeropress. Pretty much my daily driver lately. Again, some people won’t like that it’s plastic. Bialetti moka pot. I’ve had it for over five years and to be honest I don’t use it much because it’s too big for just myself. I’m sure other brands are as good, but replacement gaskets are easy to find online. Zojirushi thermos. Doesn’t leak and will keep your coffee hot all day long. It’s kind of annoying to drink directly from as vapor collects on the flip-top lid and might drip onto you.
