Gel Pens: 9+ year old Sakura Gelly Roll Silver Shadow
Funny you mention this; I always found Bic pens to be the worst pens, but I buy Bic lighters by the 50 pack. They come out to about a dollar each, and Bic lighters never fail or falter. I like Bic lighters so much, I have "[Toker Poker](https://tokerpoker.com/collections/whats-hot)" and "[LighterBro](https://lighterbro.com/)" sleeves for them. I only smoke weed. (These might be considered BIFL. Mine have been perfect for over 8 years; I just buy more for the designs and gifting). I also enjoy beer, so an item also having a **good** bottle opener is a plus. All lighterbros do this, and Toker Poker has a model ([Hemp plastic model](https://tokerpoker.com/products/hemp-plastic-bottle-opener)) with an "okay" opener. Works fine, but its the 2 min-claw style, not a full wrap-around the cap style.

Is there anything you're convinced is "the cheaper the better"?
I've used/gone through a lot of assorted lighters but having a cheap bic is undefeated. Throw a few in your bags/car etc and you'll never be unable to set something on fire.

Can't go wrong with a bic, but a Xikar is nice.

Is there anything you're convinced is "the cheaper the better"?
Pens. The Bic Cristal is a phenomenal pen, and you can get a 24 pack for about 5 bucks.

Is there anything you're convinced is "the cheaper the better"?
If you ask any smoker of cannabis or cigarettes they’ll tell you that those cheap lighters with a flame length dial suck(often called crack lighters) suck. They almost always stop working before they run out. Just use a bic lighter

Disposable razor blades, the 1 blade bics will do in pinch for my face. I can also trim around my mustache and sideburns easier with the single blades. I buzz my own hair so ill even do my own hairline. Single blades is better for all those tasks. I have a gilette safety razor but for travel ill just buy the cheap bic disposable razors.

What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it?
ADHD pet owner here. ● Bagless vaccuumer. I HATE running out of bags and spending money on them. I gladly use the vacuumer on the daily. I don't consider it fancy because it isn't cordless. 100 bucks, had it for 5 years and haven't spent a dime on bags. ● the furminator. I have one big and small and use them weekly on my dog and cat. Less hairballs and hair in laundry. It's exciting to me. Probably 50 bucks. If they break I will buy a new asap. ● Transparent containers and storage boxes. I like seeing my stuff! Very underrated. Anything from 5 bucks to 15. ● random A5 notebooks. I dump anything from my brain in them and when they're full I transfer the good ideas and throw away the "to do" parts. Can't fathom how I managed to live my life and get anything done before I discovered what a simple investment that is. 10 bucks at most every three months. ● the 100pack of BIC adjacent pens to keep everywhere in my house. It's so nice to have a cheap reliable pen. I take good care of them so I've got 10 left after 10 years. 7 bucks well spent. ● the microwave safe lid I put over my food so I don't have to clean splatter every single time I heat my leftovers. My mom gave it to me 10 years ago, and it's probably 20 years old now. It probably costs like 5 bucks. I wouldn't have appreciated these things 10 years ago but they make life easier so they became fun to me. I was kinda poor and bad at managing the little income I had, and felt really bad about spending 100 on a vaccuumer even though the old one was broken.

Stuff you will continue buying for life
Try BIC chrome platinum. If feather is a 10/10 the bic ones are an 8/10.

Refillable pen suggestions
So, my understanding is first one sort of needs to pick the cartridge one likes (which is what you're saying, you like the Muji .038 cartridge) and then find a place to order them. Then, the barrel choice is up to what fits the cartridge and your comfort/taste/budget. I'm a huge fan of the Pilot G2 Extra fine (.05) cartridge. (G2 .38 is "ultra fine") I've heard similar things about the Bic Gelocity but haven't tested. Fancier barrels for each can be found online, I haven't bothered though because I lose pens too frequently to be replacing fancy barrels.

Some of my favorite BIFL EDC items.
I don’t “edc” anything, in the sense OP means, but I always have at least one fountain pen in my work bag. I also carry one non-fountain pen I like and a bic for people who ask to borrow a pen from me.

What are your favorite niche BIFL items that are currently available?
Bic cristal pens. Disposable but works and $10 sets one up for a couple years.

I'm using my Grandpas gillette ball end razor handle.
My short list has feather, Astra, Wilkinson sword, bic platinum and shark. Still have a ways to go before I decide which ones I like best.

Where Does "Buy It for Life" Not Make Sense?
Lighters I like quality Lighters so I always get Bics. But as a smoker and with a lot of pothead friends, I'd never invest in something that would actually hurt to lose it.
