The birks are indeed well built and easily repairable. They’re also great for your feet with the natural footbed shape! BIFL products should be those that contribute to our health too. Converse are evil foot-binding sweatboxes designed for narrow feet. I stepped on the ground next to mine, saw an inch difference and noped out. Side note: I have a size 8.5 all black pair of made in Japan converse for sale. Worn once.

BIFL is about repairability. What's the point of spending $150 on Japanese Converse if they still end up in a landfill in 2 years when the sole wears through? Birkenstocks you can resole, replace the footbed, even get the cork redone. My mom's had hers resoled twice and they're still going strong after like 15 years. The made in Japan Chucks might be nicer but unless you're buying them as collector pieces that sit on a shelf they're still disposable shoes with a slightly higher price tag

The Birkenstocks, I believe, are your only BIFL item here (I hear they are resoleable thus you’ll get good mileage from them). For sneakers, you’re pretty much screwed. I’ve done a bit of research on this front and there are only a few companies that make repairable sneakers, all of which charge way too much to make it worthwhile (unless you’re rich, which if you are: can I have some money?). For the boots, however, Blundstones are arguably your worst offenders here becuase you have options. I love the look of Blundstones and from what I hear they’re also really comfortable and durable—my wife has a pair that she has beaten to hell and they are still going strong 7 years in. In spite of their really good build, they are still not resoleable and thus are doomed to the landfill. Even the Blundstone website says that because of the way the sole is made to be comfortable and durable, the process makes them nearly impossible to replace. It’s basically the same story as with sneakers, except for the fact that you do have plenty of alternatives for boots that can last you a lifetime. Goodyear welted boots are easily resoled by any cobbler worth their salt, and there is no shortage of options. I myself have 4 pairs of boots*, all of which are Goodyear welted and have taken their respective beatings in stride. For something in a similar look and price range to Blundstone, I suggest looking at the boots sold on Huckberry (I own a pair of Rhodes Boone Lug chelseas that I love), or Thursday Boots (they have two chelseas that would stand in for the Blundstones really nicely: the Legend and the General Purpose, with the latter being really close to a Blundstone clone). Obviously you already own a pair of Blunnies, OP, so I say use them to their fullest and take good care of them, and they’ll still last you a good long while—not BIFL but pretty close. When the time comes, I recommend you look into GYW boots for their replacement. *For anyone curious, my goodyear welt collection includes the aforementioned Rhodes Boone Lug Chelseas from Huckberry. These are new and I am still breaking them in, but even with the necessary discomfort that comes during the breaking in period of new boots, they’re pretty great so far. I also have a pair of Thursday wingtip boots for a dressier option, which I’ve had for about 8 years, a pair of Red Wing Chukkas that I’ve had for 7 years, and a pair of Chippewa Boots from 2015 that are only now due for a resoling. Chippewa is the only brand I wouldn’t recommend because it appears they’ve gone in a different direction with their products in the last 10 years and the stuff I see on their site does not resemble my boots in quality or style.

Birkenstocks will last if you protect the leather (leather conditioner etc) and cork (Kelly’s cork renew or Barge rubber cement). Once the sole wears down 1/4”, get a heel tap or resole from a cobbler. Blundstones are not BIFL. If you want boots, look into boots that have a good year welt like Red Wings. These can be resoled by a cobbler.

Birkenstock will resole your shoes and they have an insane warranty. I'm on year 14 of my Blundstones and have just wapped out the insoles. they'll probably go another 5 or 10 years. highly recommend this brand. chucks are garbage. they were great when they were $25 but now they're 2.5X that price for thin canvas and rubber shoes that are designed to last a season.

I was going to buy the Zermatt slipper. It then I went to an actual Birkenstock store. Talked with the person working there and he did point out the bottoms are latex. He pointed me to the Amsterdam which has the felt top but the traditional Birkenstock bottom. These are perfect and I hav confidence they will last a long long time.

A few things that really come to mind with no particular order or genre: - Tires and windshield wipers are two consumables that really are worth what you pay for them. - Quality hand tools will always make life easier. (Fluke testers for everything and Leathermans get honorable mentions here.) - Good appliances that you don’t have to worry about will give you peace of mind. Invest in your fridge if you have to pick just one. - Vornado fans are a favorite. - Single-function drip coffee with a gold tone coffee filter. - Running ethernet through your house to every room saves headache, and will always outlive whatever wireless/mesh system you’re currently using. - Wrought-iron outdoor furniture. - Anything that involves entry/exit to your house. Screen door mechanisms, handles/knobs/locks, garage door openers and remotes, gates. - A set of jumper cables, ratchet straps, and an *organized* toolkit for the car. - Hardware hardware hardware. Keep track/stock of nails/screws/turnbuckles/toggle-bolts/etc., and always restock when you notice you’re low. It’s hard to source carpentry materials at 2 AM. Make sure you have it for indoor and outdoor ratings. A small stack of tarps is a must in this category, too. - Grocery-getter shoes. Something you can throw on in an instant, but can take you through a full day. I lean towards Birkenstocks. - Osprey bags/luggage. The guarantee is worth its weight in gold.

The second I bought more than 1-3 pairs of shoes for every situation: all my shoes started lasting an absurd amount of time. Like I can’t even remember a pair of shoes I threw out, minus like busting a flip flop beyond glueing back. It’s had to be a decade at this point. Also, took some 80’s cowboy boots out my dad’s closet that he never wore recently. I bought some wranglers. I’m pretty stoked to have something other than my bean boots for colder weather. And all my ex work boots cuz I need steel toes now. All Goodyear welted. I probably have 4 pairs of sneakers and only wear 2 often. I beat the shit out of every sandal/flip flop I get my hands on. I recently bought a pair of molehinders and regret not finding the cheaper alternatives on Etsy beforehand. I’m currently using a random pair of quicksilver flip flops after coming from rainbows and Birkenstocks. Always ruin them somehow. I’m hoping to try bedrock sandals soon. I think it’ll fit the bill.

Birkenstock Bostons for fall/winter: suede or leather?
A waterproofing spray specifically for suede and nubuck. It will help resist stains and dirt. You should respray them every time you need to brush the suede to revive the nap. Birkenstock used to sell a kit that had spray, cork sealer and footbed cleaner.

I think some, but the new ones still last especially if you treat the cork when you get it. Also taking them to a shoe repair store, or a Birkenstock store for repairs can make them last forever. My first pair that I still have is a pair my mom bought in college around 1972. I have had the soles redone a couple times.

Need comfortable shoes to help with foot pain.
Sounds like plantar fasciitis. I’m also overweight and have been for most of my life even though I busted my ass in the gym. What worked for me was Birkenstock blue footbed inserts. Holy shit…they were uncomfortable the first day or so pushing up my arches and then… bam, no more foot pain. One thing to consider is if you are pre-diabetic or diabetic. One symptom is neuropathy. Simple blood test for A1c can detect it. Mounjaro is a miracle.

Sherpa Lined Birkenstocks. The lining wears eventually but the birks stay supportive and mostly cozy. Great arch support, can be worn out the same as any Birkenstock. I like the sandals/wool sock combo because my feet need to breathe more, but the Bostons are closed toe slip ons and are super warm.

House slippers for the summer that aren't noisy.
I have tried the rubber sole in a shop with the soft insole (blue letters on the insole) and they feels good. It was Arizona not Zermatt Premium. But I still think they will be a little bit loud on the wooden floor. I would like to test the Zermatt Premium with LEA outsole with soft insole. I think that would be perfect. But I have still not found them. Not even on the Birkenstock webpage with my size 44 and regular fit. Seems like they are sold out everywhere. I have to wait until they are on stock again. Maybe try out Scholl Elio strap instead.

Birkenstocks: The Last Repairable Sandal.
The soles are cheap lightweight EVA foam on 99% of the Birkenstocks out there, they just wear through fast. Once you've worn the tread down take them to a cobbler and have them sand the rest of the tread off leaving an even layer of EVA then put a rubber sole on them and you're good to go for another year or more. Or you can do it at home if you have tools.

mine were destroyed after 1 week camping in ozarks. get vibram sole. sells in a sheet and contact cement. use heat gun on sole peel off with pliers. scuff up new sole after cutting it slightly larger clean with alcohol. apply glue to both. let dry heat up both with heatgun press together. leave brick (i had a kettlebell) on it for a bit cut excess sand even and done. i did it in a semi cab on downtime.

I've said this before and usually get downvoted: I strongly believe the quality of Birkenstocks is slowly degrading. I'm in my 30s. When I was 12 or 13 my parents bought me my first pair. I wore those same Birkenstocks through high school and college frequently. I then entered the working world and they got shelved. When I started graduate school a few years later I pulled the same old pair out. I wore them daily throughout graduate school without any real damage (for 4+ years). Unfortunately, my husband's cat peed in them and I couldn't get smell out of the cork. So I bought a new pair. That new pair lasted maybe 3 years before the sole started wearing, the leather started cracking, etc. The next pair only lasted 2 years. The next pair, 1 year. Since then, I still wear them daily (because I haven't found a better substitute), but I go through about a pair a year. Don't get me wrong, they are great shoes and I do everything in them (I even got married in a pink suede pair). But they aren't what my pair from childhood were and, while I weigh more than I did at 13, I weigh less than I did through all of graduate school. I will say, my current pair were purchased in October of 2024, have been worn daily (including on camping trips, walking my dog on trails, etc.) and do not look near as worn down as yours'. So I do think others are right that there are other factors at play too.

Nicer running shoes are probably the vibes, you’ll see Hokas/Altra recommended here (I like topo as well). Most running shoes like that aren’t really a BIFL product though, and sometimes you’ll see brands in this space market how many miles they expect the shoe to last from running. I suspect these recs are often are astroturfing with the they’ve risen to prominence here recently — the real tip to get these kind of shoes to last is to buy 2 pairs and alternate them, letting the shoe rest for a day will let them last longer than if you bought a pair, wore it to the ground and then bought a new pair. You may find success with Birkenstock style shoes lasting a while as well, but they’ll also need resoled eventually

It’s the way you walk. You don’t appear to lift your feet and have a natural gait. My oldest pair of Birkenstocks are clogs I wear at home as slippers every day for over 8 years. The soles are not even showing signs of wear except on the outside heel due to pronation.

All local shops that resole Birks in my city all charge $95-110 to do so. I may as well spend the extra $10-25 for a brand new pair. I’ve tried, trust me. I wear Birks daily, work, pool, vacations, etc., they’re my go to shoe for every occasion. If I’m forced to wear something different, I’m a bit butthurt unless it’s hiking, in which I always wear Tevas. One of my favorite pair of Birks had to be replaced a few months ago. Over two years of daily use, soles needed replacing. I called every shoe repair shop/outlet I could find within 20 miles. They either didn’t repair Birks or charged $100+ to repair, with the cheapest being $95. I assumed it would’ve been cheaper to repair, but guess I was wrong.

Before you go buy a new pair in a new size like some of the comments are suggesting, try tightening your straps. When they’re too loose, they drag on the ground unless you’re really picking your feet up with each step. I have several pairs of Birks, some with years of wear and none of my soles look like this.

Birks are BIFL *not* because they don't wear out, but because you can have every part repaired or replaced over the lifespan of the sandal. Just like your own feet, mileage will vary. If I were you I would find the local Birkenstock repair person (google "cobblers") and get the cork in that heel replaced along with a little piece of sole. This wear looks totally normal (and yes, you drag your foot).

I sent my husbands arizonas, my mayaris, and my arizonas all to repairmybirkenstocks.com, which is Michelangelo’s in Chicago. He’s a certified Birk repair place as well. That’s where I spent $80 per pair. They all came back great, though the Mayaris were a bit snug on the toe, so they needed to be broken in again, but nothing a couple soakings couldn’t solve.

This happened to me after 6 months of wear with Birks that I spent $130 on (genuine leather, cork insole), and I reached out about a warranty. They told me they don't offer warranties EVER because "everyone walks differently and wears their shoes out differently". I'm not obese, and I don't walk strangely. I used to buy my Birks at American Eagle in the 90s, and they lasted way longer than they do now. Sigh.

Only commenting on this because it's the top comment. I had similar heel wearing on my birks and brought them in to be resoled (which as someone else pointed out is expensive). The guy in the shop told me I was buying them too small, and counterintuitively, if you want to stop dragging your heels you need to get them a little bigger. I've been wearing mine about 6-8 months of the year for two years since getting bigger ones and no issues with heel dragging. I used to think the sandal should fit the exact length of my foot but you need to give it room to slide around a bit for when going up hill, down hill, etc. Not sure if you are buying them to exactly fit your foot like I did, but if you are that might be the issue.

I’ll explain it to you the way I explained it to my husband: 1 pair of leather Birks costs $140 and lasts 3 years before a re-sole with me wearing them daily for 5months out of the year, so even assuming I buy new ones every 3 years, it’s ~$0.31 / day Compared that to a pair of $30 reef flip flops, which might last you a single summer, so $0.33/day Or old navy flip flops, which my husband used to buy and then break within 6 uses (I’m not joking, I once watched him break a pair within *minutes* of putting them on). Those are $4.99 so he got a max value of $0.83/day. But if you get them to last a month of daily wear, you could get that down to $0.16/day, which is technically cheaper, but I’ve already had to do physical therapy for fallen arches once in my life, so that $0.14/day saving would cost me hundreds of dollars in medical bills and orthotics, so no thank you. Now before we got married, my husband pretty much just bought a pair of flip flops a few times a summer when he needed them for a river float, and otherwise just wore sneakers, but now gets home and immediately puts his birks on, and wears them all evening and weekend long all year long. Long term, you save money by buying better quality stuff. I get the sticker shock, but cheaper products aren’t always cheaper in the long run. And gradually, as you build your wardrobe of quality stuff, you don’t have to replace stuff as often, and it’s not a big deal to spend $140 every once in a while. Like yeah, if I need new shoes and new jeans and new underwear all in the same week, that’s gonna be rough on the budget, but I buy a new thing once every few months, so spending more isn’t a big deal anymore.

To be fair to OP, I have felt like Birkenstocks have gone down hill, too. I've had I think three pairs. The oldest one holds up super well, the middle one has cork issues on the sole, the newest one the sole started peeling off the rubber within about 1.5 months. I contacted Birkenstock about this, they told me that there was nothing they could do, and I could take it back to where I bought it if it was within the return period (which was a month, so it wasn't). Since then my opinion of Birkenstocks has gone way down. In my own personal experience, they aren't the high quality, reliable company they used to be.

They don't stand up well to hard daily use, but they are really comfy. I find driving in particular, really grinds out the heels, so I either don't rest my foot on the floor, or don't wear them driving. The wear pattern, where the right is way worse than the left, suggests to me you drive in them. Dragging your feet is no good either. They will last you a wonderfully long time as indoor shoes. I started to get plantar fasciitis, and just wearing them indoor fixed it. I only wear birks in key conditions: I'm not gonna get wet, or sweat, or run, or carry heavy stuff, or even walk far. They are casual lazy footwear that keep your feet comfy standing around or barely walking, like a backyard bbq. They aren't for music festivals, or cross town treks, or as I said, driving. I'd never get more than a year out of them at school.

Not if you buy the leather version of the sandals. Arizona Birkibuc (fake leather) are $120, Arizona in oiled leather are $140 Resole is $65 and a full footbed re-craft with soles is $80 at repairmybirkenstocks.com So, you’re looking at $60 savings per pair to do a new footbed for leather birks, and $40 savings per pair of birkibuc. I doubt you’d get more than one repair on the birkibucs, but my leather pairs came back looking brand new, I expect to get at least two re-crafts, maybe three before the leather gives out, so I’ll save $120-$180 per pair over buying new birks long term. Plus it uses fewer resources. If you only need a re-sole and not a full re-corking then that number could be as high as $225 saved over the lifetime of the upper.

My previous pair bought maybe ten years lasted well. The new pair not, the eva soles wore out quick, gone in 2 years i am in uk so they get worn typically june to September. I think Birkenstock got bought out a few years ago and are now milking their previously good name with inferior products. I resoled mine myself it wasn't that hard if you want guidance on that watch quite a few YouTube vids because there are randoms on there with bad advice just doing it for content and views. You will get a feel after watching some The hardest part is getting the old soles off. They use strong glue, i did see mention of heat softening it but i didn't try that. Contact adhesive. Cut round roughly with a knife then use a sander or grinder to finish. Its also good to oil the cork to help prevent cracking.

I weigh close to 200lbs. I’ve worn my sandals almost daily, winter and summer for two years. There is only slight wear on the sole at the pad (just behind the toe). Every pair of Birkenstock sandals I’ve owned have lasted at least 5 years under similar conditions. Ok, not *exactly* the same conditions…the Covid sequester added 40lbs but it didn’t seem to make much of a difference on the wear of the previous pair. Stop dragging your feet.

I mean they are sandals, you wear them without socks most of the time. You can get them to last a really long time with regular resoling (which costs like 1/2 of what a new pair costs) and oiling the cork and what not if you are super committed to making them last a lifetime… but you can’t really replace the footbed and shoes get nasty over time. I buy birks hoping to get 5 years, but you buy them for the support and the fact that you like them. They are not a bad buy… even though they aren’t a true once in a lifetime purchase.

Look, usually i see a post like this and I slap the birkenstock recc here and go my merry way. Like they’re durable that’s for sure, the break in period’s really long though. But you’re also wanting cheap AND you’re coming from the world of sneakers. You need a good transition sandal. I’d say go with nortiv, not as hard on the soles as the birks, they look a little bit like sneakers in the shape and they’re relatively cheaper. I use crocs slippers en can get 5-7 years of good use out of these. The plastic croclite is pretty heavy duty. Not really bifl but hard wearing. The other brands gues a lot less. Birkenstock sandals can be rebuild and testing this atm. Birkenstock isn't good with water so never wearing in the rain. A lot of problems with these also in durability also in the Birkenstock reddit.. pretty much only bifl if you avoid rain. Give good care.

What products used to be well built back in the day but now are low quality?
I’ve only bought the regular leather. Birkenstock . com has many pairs on sale right now. If you join their club for free, they give you a 10% off even in the clearance section. Shipping is free for full price items with club membership. It’s $5.95 otherwise. I found many pairs for decently less than what amazon or Walmart charges. I need the support and I like that I can buy online because I know each pair is going to fit-always. If you fancy the shearling, they are on sale now.

What's everyone's go-to sneaker?
shop by material and not so much by brand. anything leather top and thick rubber bottom and only then filter out for comfort. most my shoes are new balance for comfort but i learned something about durability. beside my leather common projects and leather converse, everyone of my new balances with have fallen apart at the sole, esp the encap soles, and the upper suede is not easy to maintain when wet. look up anvil rose on youtube to learn about materials. he cuts shoes in half and rates them. i think he is wrong about the durability of new balances though at least for me who lives in the tropics with many pairs of them that have fallen apart of hard to maintain. for sandals, leather birks are without a doubt bifl.

Ehhh. Depends. No shoe is literally buy it for life, since they get a lot of hard wear. However, for a shoe they've historically been relatively easy to resole and a good cobbler will be able to do a lot of repairs to them. They'll last a long time if you maintain them (keep the cork soles sealed, clean the footbed, moisturize the leather), though the soles they use are quite soft; it only took me about a year before I needed to get new ones on them. However, I found a cobbler that puts Vibram soles on them instead, which I've found last much much longer. With that said, Birkenstock the company used to put a lot of effort into maintaining its shoes. You could send your Birks to them, and they'd resole them for around $80, which is a pretty decent price. However, Birkenstock was purchased by LVMH, a massive luxury goods private equity firm. Since then, their repair prices have gone up substantially, to the point where you might as well buy a new pair of shoes. If you have a local cobbler, that's less of an issue, but to me it that means that the company is no longer interested in making BIFL products, and I wouldn't be surprised if that attitude is reflected in product design decisions down the line. TL;DR: Birkenstocks used to be about as BIFL as a shoe can be, provided you were willing to put in the work and money to maintain them. They're now owned by private equity, so it's a bit of a gamble as to whether that'll be the case going forward.

I kind of look at this like what things would I immediately repurchase if lost or destroyed (not including electronics) and the first that come to mind-- a yeti water bottle and a yeti mug for tea, Birkenstock Arizonas in either black or cognac, Duluth trading no yank tanks, Fantasie side support bras, classic short Uggs (great house shoes/slippers when it's cold.) I'll also never be without either a kindle or a kobo if I have a choice. I'm also stupidly loyal to cetaphil gentle face cleanser, cerave and vanicream moisturizers/lotions, and Aquaphor.

Non-Slip, Comfortable, Restaurant Shoes
A lot of the guys I worked with in fine dining wore Birkenstock. When I worked in the PNW guys swore by just your basic Birkenstock clog. I’ve tried everything crocs, birkis, hokas, and the best thing I had was Birkenstock. I bought a pair of Birkenstock dress shoes and have put so many miles on them. The cork insoles are replaceable so I've done that a couple times and I replaced the soles once. I used to use work as a registered nurse and I made so many steps on tile floors with those shoes it isn't funny.

Totally depends on what you are looking for. I live in tevas and birks but a lot of people think they don’t have enough support for long term wear. My mom really likes chacos which have a more supportive sole and very adjustable straps. My dad likes keen and Merrill sandals which fit more like shoes, have a shoe sole, and come in versions with a closed toe which can be good for various situations but still have the ventilation of sandals.

Within the $200 range, the likes of Birkenstocks might be the best option. They will mould to your feet overtime and are often recommended for orthopaedic needs while being easily resoleable. From my experience, it does take a few weeks for the shoes/sandals to properly break in.

I have enough shoes in my rotation that I haven’t had a pair wear out in a long, long time. I wear sandals from Earthrunner and Luna. Those sandals will easily last several years even being a daily driver. I have a few pairs of Birkenstocks. I have a pair of Chelsea boots for colder weather from Magical Shoes. If you take care of your leather and cork, clean your shoes gently, and you buy shoes that can be re-soled and you keep a decent sized rotation, shoes can last a long time.

Hand me down fiesta ware dishes that I helped my mom pick out at their tent sale over 20 years ago. My daughter was gifted a Steiff Bear when she was born and it still looks brand new at almost 10 years old and multiple washes. A hand me down Copenhagen table, the model is still sold by them and has gone through several moves across the country over 15+ years.

Recommended Shoes for All Day Wear
Birkenstocks! I used to always wear flipflops bc I don't like the feeling of socks. I was playing soccer wearing cleats and had a lot of pain on the top of my foot around and between 2nd through 4th metatarsal bones.We couldn't find any fractures or anything. Eventually my podiatrist just told me to wear Birkenstocks. They have corked soles, great arch support, and eventually mold to the shape of your foot. I haven't looked back. I usually wear Gizeh sandals. I even hiked Machu Pichu mountain in them! I don't usually wear shoes inside (Asian house) but I don't get foot pain anymore.

I'm a huge fan of rubber birkenstocks. Imo they are the best rubber slip on shoe. They're very comfortable, adjustable, and have lasted me a while. Hell, they're even relatively fashionable which you can't really say about many other comparable shoes. I use them as house shoes, beach shoes, and if needed when traveling shower shoes. You can walk on them in the street without much issue too

Birkenstock has a range of slip resistant shoes intended for service and hospitality. As a chef, I wear the Super Birky. They're molded rubber and last many years, even going through a commercial dishwasher daily. The QO400 and QO500's are more traditional, and also durable and comfortable for restaurant work.

Long time shoes for flat feet
I have very flat feet and I live in Birkenstock boots and sneakers. My boots have lasted four seasons in New England weather. I originally got them in Berlin, actually. My sneakers last usually about two years before I look to get a new sole. I walk a lot and my back never hurts.

What is the longest lasting house slipper?
I have many house slippers. I have insight but no answers. Glerups or off-brand Felted wool on Etsy with suede soles are great for indoors and do fine on a few steps outside. They help keep feet warm and breathe well. They give no support to the foot. I have clogs and booties, my next pair I will try a rubber sole so I can have some protection for a few steps outside hear and there. Crocs. There are tons of options. My classic clogs were fine, but I left them outside one day and the sun warped and shrank them to hell. I have some other models that are nice still. Birkenstock. I recently got a pair of cork-soled sandals and clogs. I'm currently breaking them in, so still a bit skeptical of why everyone loves these so much. I'm really hoping they hold up to the hype.

Cute Sandals w Ankle Support
I bought some Birkenstock Pappillio wedges for "nice" shoes and got another pair of Yara for every day. I'm still looking at the Tevas though, but will probably get another pair of Planka. I'll be two years post corkscrew fracture of the tibia with ankle repair. I have a plate and seven screws and pins, and I do pretty well in the wedges for church and out to eat after. I haven't done a full day yet.

Another vote for Birkenstock, or Footprints, their secondary brand. They have far more than slide-in styles these days, and the classics are repairable. If you’re pounding a lot of pavement, when you get them resoled, ask for true Vibram rather than the Birkie applecore material. Birkenstock insoles are also available.

Fellow shoe eater here. I'm a big guy, I walk and stand a lot, I'm a chef and instructor. I'm also a bit manic / kinetic like a lot of culinary folks when busy. I have a flat feet and a lot of other issues that would give the guys who do the shocks and alignment on your car headaches. I once had a pair of shoes go from new in box on Friday to holes in the sole and tossed in the trash by the end of the day Sunday. I've had good experience with Red Wings. I liked their postal worker oxfords, till they were discontinued. I had the same problem with Birkenstock oxfords. The Red wings were comfy and wore very well. The Birks were even more comfortable. Alas both of these options are gone as far as I know. Don't sleep on seeing a specialist. They can recommend shoes that help with whatever issues not associated with the f = ma. There are a lot of custom foot beds and supports that can expand the range of shoes that will work with your foot. I have a pair of the Birkenstock clog in plastic for the garden. A lot of line cooks love these, but I can't keep my feet inside them in the kitchen. My garden wearing of them puts them at comfy and easy to clean. I don't have a lot of feedback here since I don't wear them that much. I'm currently wearing a set of Thursday's Boot Company's oxfords. Pretty shoe. Fit and comfort are great, wear looks very good at the six months mark.

They do come with an extra insole which I use because my feet are a tad bit smaller than the smallest adult sized Blundestone, which made them fit comfortably. The arch support in those insoles aren’t great but I’m sure if you sized up and got a proper arch insole, it would work! A few years ago I came to the realization that the most comfortable shoes to own are blundstones and Birkenstocks, so I have a brown and black pair of both. I wear blundestones all fall and winter and switch out to the Birkenstocks spring and summer!

They’ve been great for long periods of standing/walking around the house like when I’m cooking or doing chores. Well, I work in healthcare and on average I do between 10,000-15,000 steps a day. The pair I wear at work, look like slip on vans but leather and are super comfortable. I wear them 5 days a week and they are the only shoe that my feet, legs, hips, and back don’t hurt and then end of my shifts. When I’m not at work I’m in the Arizona’s or the sneakers they offer. Basically I am always in some sort of Birkenstock and my feet are happy 😃

Ecco white leather sneakers were perfect for our trip to Europe. The treads were super grippy for wet stone walkways, stairs, etc. Can clean them up in the room, look good with all kinds of clothes. I also did really well in my Madewell loafers for sightseeing, and of course Birkenstocks.

Oboz are supposedly some of the longer lasting hiking boots nowadays. I got 2 years out of my last pair of sawtooths, and for me that's pretty good for hiking boots - I hike a lot and am rough on my shoes in general That being said, I'd recommend either switching shoes between activities if that 12k isn't all in one walk (ie, 2k around town commuting and then a 3 mile walk for pleasure later, wear blundstones to and from work then switch to hiking boots or trail runners) - or if it's regular daily hiking, buy 2 pairs and rotate day to day, shoes last longer if they can fully dry, or so I'm told / so it seems in my experience In the summer, I mostly wear tevas for real hiking and choring, and birkenstocks for casual walking around town / flat walks like rail trails, and gentle tasks harvesting on the farm

Birkenstock sandals. I got tired of sore feet, blisters, and replacing cheap flip flops every few months, so I bought a pair. They hold up for years, and have enough arch support that my podiatrist said they were good. The only place I wear cheap rubber sandals anymore is in gym showers.

I swear by Birkenstock - they have lots of sneakers and boots options, not just sandals! I find the construction to be pretty solid and they last, so worth the money to me. I also have a locally owned Birkenstock store where I can get great sales/clearance (like $50 vs $100) but the website also has sales!

My Birkenstock Professional after 3 years of use.
I don’t think shoes are supposed to be BIFL. Birks last me 5 years with daily usage. Just got a pair for indoor use and I believe they will last me double the time. First, it depends on how you walk. Second, it’s normal that cork compresses with time. Who would like a sole that doesn’t have cushioning? It’d be very uncomfortable. Plus, if you walk outside, the ciment is for sure grinding down on the rubber of the sole (which needs to be redone). The harder the shoe the less comfort. To the extreme, diamond shoes would last you forever and but would be the least comfortable.

I think your idea to have two pair and alternate them so they have a chance to dry out is wise. You might even use a boot drier on the spare pair. I like my Birkenstock Zematts and Glerup boots. I think the best I’ve had were Haflingers. Wool is the way to go. My feet rarely sweat but Crocs will do it, so I don’t know why everyone’s recommending plastic slippers.
