First BIFL clothing for around $200
For me it would be a pair of Blundstone Chelsea boots. I've got two pairs. I love their classic styling and think they can be dressed up or down, they're super comfortable, and IMHO they look even better as they wear and get creases and nicks. The patina of age. You can get them resoled if needed.

What Snow Boots to Buy?
I’ve had really good luck with Keen’s (there leather Chelsea boots are pretty great), Blundstones also good if they fit your feet (not great for ½ sizes), and I always loved Sorels when I still needed full on snow boots. I’m in the PnW, but coastal, so Keens work fine for me 90% of the time.

Birkenstock will resole your shoes and they have an insane warranty. I'm on year 14 of my Blundstones and have just wapped out the insoles. they'll probably go another 5 or 10 years. highly recommend this brand. chucks are garbage. they were great when they were $25 but now they're 2.5X that price for thin canvas and rubber shoes that are designed to last a season.

I recently moved overseas to a much, much colder continent so I did have to a) declutter and sort through everything I own, b) pack the clothes I needed for the year in a single suitcase and then c) collect a lot of new stuff to suit the new climate. I also might have a few contrasting choices as I'm a young-ish woman who likes dressing up and wearing interesting pieces (e.g. there's not a single grey thing in my wardrobe). I brought with me: **Tops:** 10-ish t-shirts, most from second-hand stores or small businesses; 3 cotton longsleeves (to be transparent, they're all Taylor Swift merch); 1 merino wool and 1 merino/silk blend long sleeve; 1 thermal shirt; 1 corduroy button up/light layer; 1 men's linen button up; 3 sports jerseys for working out **Dresses:** 4 thrifted cotton dresses - 1 mini, 2 midi, 1 maxi **Outerwear:** my Kathmandu raincoat and another rain-resistant jacket; 2 sweaters; 1 puffer jacket **Bottoms:** 3 thin cotton or linen pants (all fun patterns); 1 pair of hiking pants; 2 pairs of bike shorts; 2 mini skirts; 1 thermal pants; Lululemon leggings **Shoes:** black RM Williams boots; brown blundstones; white converse; teva sandals. The converse are falling apart (4-ish years old?) so will need to be replaced by another everyday walking sneaker and I'm keeping an eye out for brown leather boots to better match some outfits. Plus socks & underwear, swimmers, hats, beanie, bags etc. I've purchased another merino wool long sleeve, some soft cotton lounge/pyjama pants, some wool/polyester trousers, some thermal leggings and some jersey trousers from Uniqlo, a coat from a vintage store, and a Patagonia fleece from a second hand store. I also bought some 100% wool trousers from a second hand shop but they accidentally ended up in the wash and shrunk (still feeling their loss). This is tiding me over well for now, but I'm still building up my collection of athletic/hiking/outdoorsy gear and hoping to do that as sustainably as possible - sourcing secondhand, buying from reputable (and inevitably expensive) brands, choosing natural fibres etc. Also on my list: another sundress (but holding out for the perfect one), a pair of leggings more suited to running (as opposed to yoga) and a long gingham skirt. Long (sorry!) but I've been thinking about my wardrobe a lot this year so had lots of thoughts to put down!

My Blundstones have become my everyday pair of shoes. I got they used and they still have at least a decade on them. I’ve replaced the insoles and condition the leather regularly, but they’ve otherwise never shown wear. If these ever give out, I would be getting a new pair asap.

1st pair of blundstones lasted seven years of daily hard work wear in 35C heat and daily motorcycle riding. 2nd pair lasted only 3 years. 3rd Pair was hot garbage and lasted less than a year of light non-work use. Never again, Blundstone, as we once knew it, is gone. Resoling is also impossible according to the several shoe repair places I have contacted.

Nah they're not bifl. The sole started crumbling off one of mine recently. Granted I wore them all the time for about 10 years. Mine are steel toe and I did kick a lot of shit with them, but I have a different pair of proper work boots for when I do real work, so to be clear that wasn't 10 years of working in them, just being a rough dude with them. The tread is absolute garbage in cold temperatures too fwiw. I have other winter boots that I can walk on ice no problem, but blundstones are totally fucked on ice. I don't think I would buy another pair of blundstones tbh. And OP, those aren't new. Those were clearly worn and returned. Unless blundstones has dropped down to an even shittier tier now and uses bottom grade leather, idk. All I know is that I've never seen a new pair or even not-so-new pairs look so crappy and these boots are wildly popular where I live.

Pacific Northwest native here. Blundstones are my daily boot. I just wear wool socks for insulation when needed. I would be comfortable walking on trails with them. Any hikes involving elevation I would want to wear actual hiking shoes.

Blundstones are good, but they are NOT BIFL. Idk who told you that. I mean. Theoretically you can get them resoled once theyre worn, but not easily and not cheaply. They'll likely have to add a proper welt to your boot. As for the condition of yours, if thats how they came out of the box id be asking for a discount or a replacement. If you bought them new like that out of the box im certain the warranty would cover it.

I sell these at a retailer. They do tend to scratch very easily (much like most Birkenstocks) but this seems pretty excessive. The good thing is the full-grain variant is pretty easy to clean up with a little bit of conditioner. Make sure to look at the outsole to see if they still have factory texturing on the lugs (doing this from memory…I think they have textured lugs). If the texture is present only on some lugs, It can be a sign that they were worn previously. I do notice what looks to be some slight creasing on the left boot where it would bend from stepping. Looking at these portions of the boot should give you a better idea if it’s been previously worn. Either way, I would try to return them based on the condition of the upper. Aside from how the boots look. Is there a good return policy if they don’t fit? It is notoriously tricky to properly size Blundstones, especially if you don’t have the feet (person) in-store with you. Good luck!

Damn that’s crazy quick wear. I have owned my Blundstones roughly 8 years and sure they are a bit worn but definitely still kicking. I’m only just now thinking of replacing insoles. They still look good when I condition the leather and the soles definitely still have life in them. Only thing is the top of the elastic fraying a bit. They are easily my most worn shoe and I wear them in all weather, mild hiking, whatever. As others have mentioned, they may not truly be “buy it for life” but that’s also a pretty lofty goal for everyday type shoes. My feet absolutely destroy sneakers (I have a pointy back of my heel that burrows holes like crazy) but the Blundstones have far exceeded the lifespan of any other “everyday” footwear I own.

I’m a huge fan of blundstones but they won’t last a life time. If you wear the same pair everyday for work you’ll get 18 months. Just like any boot you need to maintain them, I leather condition and oil them every 2 months or so and that takes a good deal of the scuffs out the boot.

I would in no way consider Blundstone more enshittified than Sorel. The issue with Sorel is they have many many different designs and some of them are fully trash and some of them are still solid. Blundstones are more consistent since they have a more focused lineup. Blundstone also has stayed truer to their original designs and manufacturing techniques but have moved to overseas factories. So the best Sorels are better than the best Blundstones but the worse Sorels are the worst.

$200 is too low for what you want. I would suggest Koio Fermo which is currently on sale for $255 (Cyber Monday). Blundstones are nice but not resolable making them a 2-3 year boot instead of 4-6. The whole point of boots that can be resoled is to save money long-term by maintaining your boots and resoling them for less money that it takes to purchase a new pair.

Sure, but the people I work with all either wear blundstones or hokka’s. We walk around 15,000-25,000 steps on average. Those two are the common shoe nowadays. My current favorite work shoes are the new resoleable danner 600 gtx. It has a sneaker like midsole that can be replaced and its made (or at least assembled in the usa). I dont think red wings has anything like it. But they should. I cant go back to my red wings at work anymore. The danners are lighter and more comfy and provide as much protection as

Solovair has more styles, so they might fit your look better. Just note that they require a good bit of wearing in. Most of the leathers are not comfortable out of the box. Blundstones usually have a blobby shape, so they might not be your thing. They’re wearable out of the box, and they’re my go to for trips with a lot of walking, like theme parks.

For me it depends on what I’m trying to buy. Like for example I wanted good boots so I started looking on social media to see what people similar to me were wearing. I found blundstones, which are crazy expensive, but I was able to thrift a pair and try them out. They ended up being a little small, but after regularly wearing them for a year I invested in a new pair that fit perfect and have been wearing them regularly for well over a year. It’s definitely difficult but I always try to find a good deal before I invest in an “expensive” version of what I want.

I had Miyabi, Henckels, all kinds of fancy pants $500 knives. This $26 knife beats the shit out of them. Outdoors/sports/hobbies: Tikka rifle - will go to my grandkids. TRX - training system - nylon webbing - no reason for it not to last forever Pentax 645 Medium Format lenses. I’ve been using them across camera systems for decades now. Still like new, so smooth and beautiul. Got them new old stock from Japan 20 years ago. Unbelievably cheap at the time. Like $75 a lens. My first pair of blunnies did 5+ years in a machine shop (cnc, so not exactly hard use) and I was very happy with that. Was ready to get another pair but found some Redbacks locally on clearance and decided to go for it. Australian but actually made in Australia. Have high hopes for these! Blundstone changed manufacturing sometime between when I bought mine and when I was ready for another. No comment on quality as I may never know. That being said when these Redbacks die I plan on buying Canada West as I daily wear pair of Canada West chelseas non workboots and the quality is second to none.

I love mine. I will never buy another brand. Didn't have to break them in. Day one it was like I'd been wearing it forever. Never had that happen wtih a boot before. Canadian winters here. I just replace the insole every couple years. 7 years and going strong.

Odd seeing so many negative experiences with Blundstones in recent years. I got my first pair in 2014, still use them in my workshop but they're falling apart, especially after my left boot got a little melty at a campfire. Got my current pair back in 2021 and they're still in great shape.

I will never understand absolutists that say “buy it for life” means a single product with last “forever.” This post is the correct definition. Something, that if taken care of, can last years. However, that mileage will vary based on your use in contrast to others. Another good definition of “buy it for life” should be buy it for the “life of the product” with the hope and acknowledgment that the product has a fairly long average lifespan as manufactured.

Look at RM Williams, Blundstone, Red Wing or Thorogood boots. If you're on a budget then Thursdayboots. all you need is to resole it every couple of years and give the leather a bit of care, and you're good to go. unless you're working on site as a tradie.

I love them… And 2 pairs of darn tough socks. BEFORE I found this sub. Lol and I’m British! I’m so glad I found them. Another good pair is “SmartWool” Merino wool socks are very worth it. What purchase changed your habit?
Apple AirPod Max changed the way I travel and go to the gym. If I lost or broke them I’d buy a new pair immediately. Blundstone boots, great for working in the yard, great for traveling and walking a lot, cute as an every day shoe. AnyDay microwave dishes, we use these to cook with almost every day - expensive but so worth it. We cook rice in it, meat, veggies, and we get creative with it.

Contact Blundstone. I warrantied a 12 year old pair of steel toes because the sole cracked underfoot on both boots. They asked for pictures of the bottom and leather uppers (they will not warranty holes or wear in leather) and after contacting them they asked for a picture of the boots with the elastic cut out. New boots within two weeks. Look on the web site for the warranty form.

I’ve never considered Blundstones BIFL, yet I’m on my fifth (sixth, maybe?) pair over about a 17 year span. That averages out to 3+ years per pair and I work in an industry in which they are exposed to very destructive chemicals. They also are my daily drivers, so they’re getting constant wear. I’ve never had the soles crack, but I did have one pair wear down so flat they were unusable. Iin all fairness, they were the “dress” version which has a narrower toe and different sole. However, I keep coming back because they are the most comfortable, high quality, light, travel-ready boot I’ve ever had. I haven’t noticed any change in the quality, though I’ve been worried about quality declining due to the recent adoption of them as a hip shoe (MFers are cuffing their pants around here to show them off). As others have said, I would contact Blundstone if they are truly a few months old.

I bought a pair 4-5 years ago. Even then, people were saying they were no longer BIFL. When I say I’ve beat the shit them, I mean it. Hiked rocky mountain trails, scuffed them up doing concrete work, walked hundreds of miles in PNW rain. They’ve held up great. I clean/oil them once a year.

I had the same pair as yours and they lasted about a year before the heels cracked. The sole was worn very similarly to yours. Very disappointing! My other pair of Blundstones from a few years earlier are still going strong and practically look new.

I like that they are pretty versatile too. I can wear them around town casually or when I'm working in the yard. Saddle treatment or similar, not shoe polish, on this rustic type leather. I use RM Williams' saddle dressing that's tallow-based, Blundstone sells a specific cream for it that won't darken them as much as tallow or mink oil based ones will.

I just replaced my 10-year-old pair, I'd worn down to the midsole (and cracked it). My old ones looked as dry as your old ones did, I did a double take when I took the new ones out of the box. Maybe I'll treat them more often this time! I could've got them "resoled", but with the crack in the midsole I decided I left it too late. If I remember correctly, my new pair is my fourth pair since 2001 or so.

Same. I grew up in Hobart right around the corner from the Blundstone factory. I've worn them since I could fit into my first kid's pair. Some dubbin or lanolin in the leather keeps them tip top and waterproof. I grew up on a farm and my current pair are about 12 years old.

I treat my Blundstones with mink oil when they look like your old pair and they end up looking like your new pair and it restores the water proof/resistance. I put some insoles from REI in them when new and then swapped them out after a few years.

8 years with no repair or replacement. And I actually used tims before buying these and I had the same problem. Soles wore thin to like 0.25" in like 6 months and needed to be replaced. If you need steel toe, I think blundstone has a line of those for work.

Funny enough, I have wide feet and these are some of the few boots (and shoes) that fit great right off the bat. I would try the originals in your case, from what I've seen, the thicker leather allows for a more formed fit.

Im not looking for validation, I'm happy with 8 years of abuse out of boots. The soles could have gone longer, you're right. The problem is that the sides blew out and you can't exactly rebond blundstone leather to the soles once they tear. There's no reliable way to do it that ensures a good fix. Again, I'm not looking for validation. I'm just showing off how they look after 8 years of daily use in a variety of conditions. Yes there are boots that can truly be worn for life and reworked by cobblers, but for a regular old boot, they have held up so much better than any other pair I've owned. I love my blundstones and have no problem buying a new pair after nearly a decade.

Honestly its hard to remember how they first felt since its been so long and my old pair is so worn in but this new pair definitely feels more rugged than I remember, a bit like the originals (style) would feel. So far they've been extremely comfortable and have a good fit on my feet. The soles feel and look to be identical, biggest thing I think is just that the leather feels thicker (may just be the worn out leather of my old pair)

Blundstone boots - same as the zippo. Comfortable, nice-looking, well-made, water-resistant casual boots that work for most occasions and seasons; 3. High-quality cast iron pan and pot that I can use for pretty much everything. These aren't life changing per se, but they are nice things to have, and I can rely on them to get the job done. I'm not sure how much they'll last, but as long as I don't have to deal with getting new ones in the next few years, I'll be quite happy.

I have a wide toe box, normal ankle, high arch, and high instep, so I’m always on the hunt for something similar and often can’t just walk into a store and find something that fits. Arch supports placed strategically in heels help, as do straps on the ankle. Topo Athletic Sole Bliss Blundstones in a half size (they are wider but not longer) Duckfeet is on my list to try Clarks wides and low heels with ankle straps Anya’s Reviews helped me figure out brands with different foot shapes and what to look for, but I like a thicker insole than the barefoot movement she talks about. Thanks to her, I learned about Lems.

Best all day/everyday BIFL boots narrowed down between these two
its hard to find boots that don't drop their soles on the first contact with wet with salty spring snowmelt. I'm currently trying out Blundstone with their rubber soles, but they still use a PU rubber bonding layer in the middle. Its that Polyurethane foam Rubber (PU) Soles so many boots have. Lightweight and Flexible for indoor use, but terrible in actual wet jobsite environment beyond a year. Step in the wrong puddle with a bit of contamination and it'll crumble overnight.

Sneakers or boots for daily wear.
Buy good quality leather shoes such as Red Wing, Oliver, Blundstone, and so on, then look after the leather with a good quality cleaner like Lexol and conditioner such as Bick 4. Use a horsehair brush to apply. Then when the soles wear out, fillet the tread off a car tyre (cut down to just above the steel wires - see YouTube for instructions) and glue it on with good quality glue such as Shoe Goo or Barge. That's how you make shoes that can do tens of thousands of miles and last up to 10 years with low running costs (pun intended).

Conditioning is more important (2-4 x a year max but letting your eyes and fingers be the guide), use a decent one, no need to go Saphir on them but whatever leather balm or conditioner that isn't the cheapest works. Polish only covers things up up. Important but not essential Probably not you but most blundstones I see in r/BlundstoneBoots are drier than the Sahara.

I immediately pull out the insole and replace with Superfeet. Not just on my Blundstones, but on nearly every shoe I own. Instant arch support. The insoles last longer than the shoes do for me, so I just move them from one pair into the next (particularly with running shoes, which by their nature aren't BIFL)

They do come with an extra insole which I use because my feet are a tad bit smaller than the smallest adult sized Blundestone, which made them fit comfortably. The arch support in those insoles aren’t great but I’m sure if you sized up and got a proper arch insole, it would work! A few years ago I came to the realization that the most comfortable shoes to own are blundstones and Birkenstocks, so I have a brown and black pair of both. I wear blundestones all fall and winter and switch out to the Birkenstocks spring and summer!

Blundstone Boots - they are a chelsea style with the elastic sides, i have 1 pair of round toe and one pair of a more square toe. Best summer shoes (Women’s/Unisex)
I'm convinced my Blundstones would survive nuclear destruction. They resist water well, clean easily, and protect the ankles which I appreciate when hiking. They're a pain to break in, but once you do, you could wear them for hours; if you're willing to pay $10 or so, a shoe cobbler may be able to stretch the leather for you.

Blundstone sizing: whole sizes are normal/narrow fit. Half sizes are not longer, they are the wider version. You will only be going size 8, size 9 ect. 9.5? That's size nine in wide. Didn't learn this until afterwards but mine are still wonderful

No shoe is truly going to be “buy it for life.” Certain boots can be resoled, but with heavy use they will eventually be too far gone. I am really enjoying Blundstones. The regular models cannot be resoled because of how the sole is attached to the boot, but their heritage boot line can be because those are Goodyear welted. I don’t know if there is a difference in comfort though. I bought a pair of black Blundstone classics and added a thin memory foam insole since they were just a tad large without. They are incredibly comfortable and fit perfectly with the added insole. I’ve only had them a few months but with proper care they seem like they’ll hold up for a few years, at least.

Best simple, not overly-engineered shoe for walking 12k steps/day?
Oboz are supposedly some of the longer lasting hiking boots nowadays. I got 2 years out of my last pair of sawtooths, and for me that's pretty good for hiking boots - I hike a lot and am rough on my shoes in general That being said, I'd recommend either switching shoes between activities if that 12k isn't all in one walk (ie, 2k around town commuting and then a 3 mile walk for pleasure later, wear blundstones to and from work then switch to hiking boots or trail runners) - or if it's regular daily hiking, buy 2 pairs and rotate day to day, shoes last longer if they can fully dry, or so I'm told / so it seems in my experience In the summer, I mostly wear tevas for real hiking and choring, and birkenstocks for casual walking around town / flat walks like rail trails, and gentle tasks harvesting on the farm

I second Blundstones, good leather and lifespan. They aren't supposed to be resoleable, but most cobblers will be able to put a vibration outsole on them. Also, they're ~120 a pair, so that's relatively cheap if they last longer than 3 years. As far as style, Chelsea's are a pretty timeless footwear as long as you don't get the super thick soles that are in right now. It's all about what bottoms you wear with them, and how well you maintain them.

I feel that these boots are pretty much true to size. The good thing about Blundstone’s, they come with an extra insert. When I first bought my boots, I felt they were a little bit big, but not so big I needed a size down. I put in the insert, and it is now perfect.

Seeking recs for high-quality Chelsea boots or other style- type women's boots
I think they're the [1448s](https://www.blundstone.com/voltan-black-leather-pull-on-boots-womens-style-1448) since that's the only style that's tall and has the brogue detailing...but [mine seems to have a more rounded toe](https://imgur.com/a/bfjMmsh). Blundstone doesn't include a top view of their boots but they seem to be narrower than mine and I don't love the look (honestly, that's what's been keeping me from buying a new pair). It took me a while and several emails to find a cobbler that would resole them and I think I got lucky--he did a great job! And it was fast (about a week not including shipping time there and back), only ~$100 (with shipping both ways), and they came back cleaned, polished and with new, leather insoles. If you're interested, the cobbler is High Street Shoe Repair in Salem, OR (it'll pop up if you google). Don't let the shitty website put you off lol (he seems pretty old school in general) as he really did a fantastic job--the first soles he did lasted 4yrs (over 2yrs longer than the originals) and the second soles are still going (going through my emails to get the info for you I realized I've had them way longer than I thought--almost 8yrs!). Wouldn't hurt to send him pics of your boots and ask--that's what I did.

BIFL clothes for women?
some brands I’ve used or heard others on here support: Patagonia, Blundstone, Branwyn, Quince, Smartwool & mixed reviews on Lululemon align leggings but I do personally think they last at least 2x as long as other leggings if you take care of them & don’t put in the dryer

Yet another vote for Blundstones! I have their classic Chelseas but the taller version (can't find them on the site anymore). I've worn them almost every day for over five years now--resoled twice (found a great cobbler in OR that I send them off to) and the elastic is starting to fray at the top but the leather is still holding up great! I love them so much...by far the most comfortable--they feel like slippers at this point lol--and durable boot I've ever bought (though I just got a pair of Solovairs--have heard great things but we'll see).

Hands down, Blundstone. I understand their quality isn't what it once was, like a lot of BIFL stuff, but mine are two years old and they're holding up well. If you live in a cold climate, they don't do *shit* on ice, fyi, but they're a good all-rounder. My best friend bought a pair from their (now discontinued) "Active" line for the lighter weight and when the soles began cracking, they replaced the boots at no charge, not even shipping.

I just got a pair of Blundstone Chelsea boots for my barista gig on the recommendation of many many other baristas. I also have a pair of Danners hiking boots that work as nonslip enough for me. I rotate them every other day or so. The Blundstones also double as my dress-ish shoes for now.

I have a pair of Blundstones that wear well in the mud and a bit of snow (I wear lined winter boots if I'm going to walk in any significant snow though). The only problem is that they have no arch support, so I added orthotic inserts.
