Gift Ideas for My Boyfriend Who Has Everything?
I'd rent a sporty car for him for a day. If he doesn't have a favorite car that he talks about, his interests in watches, tech, and fashion lead me to believe he would enjoy a coupe made by Audi/BMW/Lexus, or possibly a Nissan GT-R or C8 Corvette. Get insurance for the day too!

This couple took their g-class on a 20-year road trip through 177 countries
Read a book a while ago called Adventure Capitalist - written by a former hedge fund manager. He went on a round the world trip in a custom SLK mounted to a diesel g wagon chassis. His reasoning was “there’s Mercedes dealerships and mechanics in places where there aren’t even roads” Good book. He had an earlier one called “investment Biker” same concept except on a BMW motorcycle- this was pre- Long Way Round.

What’s one item you bought that way outperformed its price?
Broken 2014 BMW i3 for $1000. Fixed it for $50 and drove it away from the sellers place.

What's the most expensive item you've bought with the intention of keeping it for life?
Other than my home; my dream motorcycle. 2012 BMW R1200GS. I was single at the time, bought it used. It’s in my garage right now and I will never willingly part with it. As far as material possessions go, this is my absolute favorite.

BIFL, but also BISecondhand. What are some things that everyone should keep an eye out for, but can commonly be found for cheap when preowned.
My advice is to join the BMW GSA owners forum in whatever location you are in. In fact this goes for buying anything motorised. There will be loving owners who no longer can ride or drive their prized possession, and they want it to go to someone who will cherish it.

I love buying stuff second hand. I ride a BMW motorbike, bought second hand, and most of my gear is second hand used. With this particular bike community, there are a lot of older guys who have watched Long Way Down and say they’ll do that when they retire. Then they retire, they buy the bike/Harley/boat/porsche/jag and realise then they can’t get on it, in it, or whatever. Then it’s in the garage and their wife is giving them shit about it and in the end they just get rid. And with it goes the clothes, the boots, the gloves, the panniers, the lot. I bought my £23k bike for £16k. 2 years old, 3000 miles. The guy had bought it for his long trip…..just before Covid. Then poor bugger had a stroke, and it sat in his garage. His wife dealt with me while he was in hospital.

In an age of things designed to be replaced, what currently-produced 1) trucks, and 2) cars come closest to BIFL?
No car is BIFL when not maintained. The majority of cars, if driven safely and carefully, serviced regularly (once per year for low mileage cars, 2x per year for high mileage cars) by a reliable mechanic, and cleaned regularly and carefully (including engine bay), will last significantly longer than 10 years. There are however some brands that will last longer than others even if the above is done. Brands I would personally be happy to own long term: Honda, Toyota, Ford (if they have a wet belt, stick to the replacement schedule or before), BMW, VW, Skoda, Mazda, Subaru. There will be other brands I haven't listed too, but that is off the top of my head. Some will also last longer due to simplicity, less electronics, availability of parts (popular car generally = more parts available), etc.
