Why household appliances are no longer built to last
Highly recommend buying quality brands, especially used/second hand. People are always renovating and willing to offload a nice fridge or dishwasher for cheap. I've got a **Sub-Zero** from 1993, a **Bosch dishwasher** from mid-2000's, 12 year old **washer/dryer** set, and a **hot tub** from 1996, all working great with a little bit of elbow grease and small DIY repairs every few years.

Unpopular opinion: The 'BIFL' mindset is becoming a luxury most people can't afford, and that's by design.
There are some objects, especially consumer electronics (like tvs) where it’s hard to get bifl item. For home appliances: research their warranty and repair services. Here in Germany we have companies like Miele, Siemens, Bosch, etc that have a good customer service and usually provide spare parts for at least 10 years. That shows you a certain dedication a brand has to longevity of their products.

Let’s Talk Wirecutter: What Was Worth It and What Wasn’t?
I followed some of their recs with wildly different outcomes (I forget model names so apologies): - Bosch dishwasher: 11/10 best appliance I own - LG French door fridge no ice maker: 8/10 going strong after several years - Dyson v12 slim: 5/10 (mediocre suction, micro dust bin, hard for wife to disassemble takes strength) - Samsung OLED tv: 4/10 (great image, infuriating OS, too finicky with settings. Switched to LG C2 and it’s plug and play beautiful image across any media type) - GE microwave: 0/10 it’s somehow worse than the 30 year old microwave I replaced. Cold food pockets unless you nuke it into a crisp. So are they better than a shot in the dark? Maybe?

Do you prioritize quality over price even if it’s double or triple the cost?
eg. We bake ALL the time. A cheap stand mixer would break and cause issues, so we purchased a good quality one, even though it was expensive. Hm.. We also bake all the time. At least 1/week a cake or something, all the cakes and cookied for birthdays and holidays, and we make cakes for our cousins children, and I also use the mixer to make pizza maybe 10-15/year.. We have a basic Bosch MUM series 2 that is like 15 years old now. New one now costs <200€. Now, I have no idea how new ones compare to the one we have, maybe it's much worse? But on the face of it, it's relatively cheap, and in out case works a very long time.

What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it?
Basically all of our major appliances. Bosch 800 dishwasher. Cafe induction stove. GE front load washer set with auto-dispensing detergent. And our bidet. The bidet is the only one anyone ever notices. The rest sit there in the background, just casually making my life better every time I use them. It’s never fun to have to replace an appliance. But when you upgrade to one that WORKS, it’s worth every penny.

I also have a Bosch 800 that I got 3 or 4 years ago. I have no idea if it has WiFi, I’d say no but maybe it does. I’ve obviously never used it if it does and every time I run it I fall in love with it a little more (I’ve only had basic dishwashers in apartments and lived in this house for 2 years without a dishwasher at all before I put this one in and it still amazes me!)

Also note that kitchen aid mixers aren’t the best option for breads and other doughs as the dough hook isn’t intended to be used at high speeds and the motor can burn out on thick dough. Ankarsrum and Bosch win in that category. I use my KA for cookies and cakes and my Ankarsrum for bread, pizza, and bagels, etc.

Kitchenaids are greased with 4oz food grade grease, and there’s basically zero way for more than a drop or two at a time to work its way out of a very bad condition mixer. That said if you want a motor below, the Bosch machines are supposed to be amazing. They are pricey though.

It seriously depends on the product enshittification is a real thing they literally do not and cannot make them like they used to due to them keeping the expenses lower as number must go up forever in any and all public company's My cars an w124 and honestly the interior is impressive and just gets more impressive when you compare it to a modern car, ofc if doesn't have the safety tech but it doesn't have the breaking down either in the same time mine broke down the cheap sensors the buddies one uses broke down more then enough times.... In tools however I agree I have a brand new set of Bosch Premium Power Tools and they are so good compared to the old ones I was using, and you can't really enshittify tools without falling back heavily in the race

I can see a lot of recommendations for Bosch and until recently, I would have said the same, my parent's Bosch fridge freezer is still going after 20+ years. However, modern Bosch fridges have succumbed to enshitification just like so many other brands - I've had to replace our fridge/freezer after about 7 years - with the service engineer who came out to look at them stating, "...you can't expect anything better these days..."

Thanks to everybody, a bit of mixed advices there and we finaly made the choice to go for the cheaper option. I was kind of convinced that Miele was a big step up over Bosch but I am not anymore. It might be better but at the price it will have to survive way longer to match the Bosch. At the current Price, if the Bosch last 10 years (55€/year), the Miele must go to almost 15 years (53€/year). We are just 2 at the moment and do like 6 washes a month with our old 5kgs. I like Miele, our vacuum cleaner from them feels unkillable but here I’m less convinced. Thank you all once again! Bosch it will be.

Hi, domestic appliance repair company owner here. More and more brands are incorporating features such as WiFi, but you can choose to not use these at all (in fact most people don't!). Here's the list in terms of reliability and long-term spare parts support: 1. Miele 2. Fisher & Paykel 3. Bosch (or Neff for integrated versions; both brands are owned by the same company and identical inside) 4. Samsung 5. Beko Miele and Fisher & Paykel are "luxury" brands and you should expect it to last 20+ years of real world use; much longer with the odd servicing requirements (replacing spare parts when they fail). Miele, as an example, we've repaired machines over 30+ years old and spare parts are still available. I hope this helps!

The features you can't access without the app are the features that are specific to the app. Like getting a notification on your phone when the cycle is finished, or remote start. As far as I can tell in 6 months of ownership, I can access all the normal dishwasher features without it.

I have a Bosch 500 series. It has the Wi-Fi stuff, but I have never used it. It’s the best dishwasher I’ve ever owned. My wife uses the Wi-Fi sometimes, but when I do the dishes they come out cleaner. (I still pre rinse.)

I have a top of the line Bosch 800. It has all of the features you speak of, but you don't need to connect it for it to run. I never hooked mine up to the internet and it cleans like a boss. As I say now, if it fits it will come out clean. It is just a normal dishwasher on steroids, without all of the internet crap.

I have a Bosch. The thing won't die. Which is annoying because the top is covered by the countertop and i never know how long is left on it. So take that advice from me, if given the option, a visible timer screen or light or indicator or SOMETHING is ideal. Mine has a red light that's on but nothing visible for remaining time left.

Bosch universal plus if you're going to be doing primarily bread or larger batches of other baked items. The motor is below the bowl and it has a two piece lid so you don't have to do the shuffle thing to avoid the kitchenaid's tilt head when trying to add ingredients to the mixer when it's on. 800W motor with 4 speeds + momentary.

We upgraded (Bosch to Miele) when we moved house a few years ago and .. I'm less than impressed. The Bosch was a mid-range model, some of their lower end white goods were essentially re-badged when they acquired other (US) brands and were reputedly not up to much, but our Bosch was solid as rock, the Miele just seems more temperamental.

You only need a Miele if it’s in a damp location , like a bathroom. Otherwise, the Bosch is more than fjne. Miele used to have an insurance where you could get 10 years of warranty and labor for free, but think this was discontinued a few years ago. This was great if you had small kids (washing 4 times a day)

I’ve got a Bosch and had it for around 5 years. Zero issues and runs great. If it ever breaks, I’ll probably buy a Miele. I think they’re supposed to be slightly better but I didn’t have the budget for it when I bought my Bosch. I don’t think you’ll go far wrong with either brand tbh.

I don't know what people are doing to their tools that breaks them. Ordinary homeowner type people, that is. I can't think of a single tool I've owned that just...died. I've got at least five different cordless drill/drivers from Ryobi and Bosch. Corded tools covering everything from soldering irons and hot glue guns to routers, drill press, and table saw. Decent quality name brands, cheap Amazon/Harbor Freight brands. I'm struggling to think of a single tool that I had to replace because it just stopped working irreparably. Hell, my Dewalt miter saw is at least 15 years old and it has a more-or-less permanent location on my deck, enduring whatever sun and rain have come and gone. Still cuts great. Take reasonable care of your tools, people. That's all it takes. You don't have to baby them; you can use them for tough jobs. They're well enough made to last the average person a long, long time.

I have a new (last 18 months) Bosch dishwasher and LOVE it. Quiet, quick and stuff gets clean even on the 1 hour short cycle. We just bought a used secondhand Speed Queen washer and honestly? It’s the best washing machine I’ve ever used. It isn’t pretty but it works great and I have yet to experience a single issue. Our old GE washer constantly left residue on clothes no matter how little soap we used, and frequently needed rebalancing. I will never buy anything but Speed Queen again.

When you compare a Bosch to say, a Whirlpool dishwasher. The Bosch should last 10 years and costs about $1000 for the lowest model that has the Bosch standards. The Whirlpool costs about $600 and should last 6 years. These are rudimentary, but in other words, it’s the same price per year! You could get 15 years from the Bosch and you could get 11 years from the Whirlpool. So they cost the same. But if one craps out on you in 4 years, one cost $1000 and the other $600…

Do modern Miele, Bosch, and Huebsch/Speed Queen washing machines live up to their BIFL reputation? Or should I just get an LG instead?
I'm not a repairman or anyone with a huge sample size but, absolutely love my Bosch dishwashers and have owned a couple. Every new house I move into it's the first upgrade. The only issue I have ever had was the door seal getting pinched and bent in on itself but the dishwasher somehow senses it and throws a warning instead of leaking so mostly just user error.

Yeah, I was super mad. I looked up a new rack set and it was 2/3's of the cost of the dishwasher it's self! I first thought it was my family jamming too much in there, but we had an ancient kitchen aid before and the current Bosch never had any of those problems! When water started leaking into the pan, I was done. The Bosch cost 3-4x as much, but it has lasted longer, lol

We had a Samsung that had plastic clips that held the upper rack break repeatedly. Then the rubbery plastic on the rack handles started disintegrating and got tiny plastic dots all over the dishes. After the rack clips failed again, we replaced it with a Bosch in 2018 which has been great. However, apparently some modem Bosch appliances require an internet connection and using an app for some commonly used features. I don't know how many models this affects.

It's the outliers, not everyone who owns these things are on Reddit, Bosch in general is still very good but the loudest voices are always the ones with problems. The general consensus is Samsung sucks all around. Bosch is still very good with issues here and there and the mieles are great until you have problems then parts and service is horrible, main reason we went Bosch they have a decent repair network if you do happen to have issues. Also there is nothing wrong with most other brand they work too but stay away from Samsung.

Well said. Really important to keep the filters clean, those in hard water areas (like me!) do need to use the water softener properly by making sure there's salt in the chamber, and just generally keep the machine clean and used as per the advice in the manual.

Buy a washer/dryer without a motherboard
Look for a 24-in European style front load machine that is stackable. They will fit in a small closet. You can get them even as an all-in-one heat pump option that doesn't need venting (But, I wouldn't recommend it). Miele is a well-known brand. But, Lowe's sells the Bosch 24-in washer and dryer.

I recommend second-hand or scratch & dent. + Appliance repair shops often sell appliances for a good price. I’ve sold a like-new refrigerator on Craigs List (and delivered it). + In my region, there is a small chain of stores that sell scratch & dent. The local repair shop (where I bought 30-year old laundry machines) gave me the name of the chain because the repair shop didn’t have the style of refrigerator that I wanted. I purchased from the scratch & dent store a Bosch 800 that retailed locally without damage for $4100 for $2400. The front has 4 tiny dents and one scratch. I only see the imperfections when the sunlight is at a certain angle. And I won’t cry when my spouse damages it. (Not “if.”)

I can’t say it’s going to last forever but our Bosch is holding up really well. I had to replace a part that was kind of a pain in the ass but it wasn’t too bad and certainly wasn’t anything like dying after a year and a half. Very fixable. We’ve had it for five years but it wasn’t new when it came with the house so I’d guess it’s six or seven years old.

Searching for a fridge in 2025
Hope this isn't too late (maybe it will help someone else) but NEVER buy LG or Samsung fridges - we have been told that by two refrigerator repairmen in the past few weeks, while they tried to save our 7 year old LG fridge in vain. It is now a giant hunk of landfill. They recommended Whirlpool, GE - I have heard Bosch is also good.

Who in the actual fuck decided that instead of the clamp-down terminals as present in the [D278S smoke detector](https://jmacfiles.s3.amazonaws.com/D278S.pdf) - which consistently allowed for quick and easy installation, even when compared to competitors with- and without the necessity for addressable POPITs - we install and service techs should, instead, have to deal with the absolute nonsense that is the screw-only terminal on the latest POPIT/addressable smoke detectors that you’ve slapped the market in the face with. Do they work? Sure! Do you have to either install paddle terminals or get real creative with wire bending to make it at all worth the labor and cursewords spent upon their install? Also sure! Would it help if there wasn’t even MORE labor spent on initially troubleshooting what turned out to be I assume an extremely avoidable publishing mistake - a mistake which turned out to be a simple fucking typo/mixup in the dip switch chart included in every detector, and a mistake that assigned a “+1” to every addressable value from somewhere in the 50’s to somewhere in the 60s relative to address number? You can bet your bottom dollar (left on the job/s) on it. Between those and the fact that every goddamn thing you produce these days requires either a touch screen, a Raspberry Pi-esque computer, or a WiFi signal: miss me with any more Bosch shit as “Buy It For Life,” more like “Buy It And Make A Career Out Of Getting Your Money’s Worth.” And for what it’s worth: my grandmother has a Bosch washing machine and a Bosch dryer that have been in full, unfailing service since the goddamn 80’s, with just two (maybe even three!?!) fucking analog knobs… I know your company knows how to make things that last a lifetime so this isn’t about your ability to do so, it’s about your reticence to follow the money like every other company that decides to wring the necks of their longtime customers. I will still technically be considering Bosch whenever I’m shopping for things such as work equipment/materials, tools, and/or home appliances; but until those original, consumer-minded Bosch roots are properly watered, especially with respect to wanting to see consumers once again flourish alongside the company’s own designs and ingenuity, such momentary shopping comparisons shall be not in good standing against other, more attentive and consumer-attuned brands. Do they need to do it all at once? I actually don’t remember what model Bosch fridge I just got recently, but I happened to walk in to Lowe’s one day and the floor model was for sale. A couple of dings, luckily the side that sits up against my counter mostly. The retail price was $3200 or 3300, and I got it for $2000. Based on that it must be a 500 series. I had to bring it home myself, but I was able to rent a truck from Home Depot pretty cheap. I’m just lucky I live 5 minutes from Lowe’s and drive past it almost daily. I was just checking frequently, hoping I might be get lucky and find one like I did.

I've a Bosch that I love, it has the feature that condenses vapor with cooled water walls and it works very well, sometimes perfectly. The Jet Dry is an absolute must though. I use Cascade liquid FWIW.

I just go with whatever Costco has, since their return policy is amazing if anything does go wrong. When we were looking a few years ago, I think we avoided Samsung everything. Got Panasonic microwave, Bosch dishwasher, LG stove, and LG fridge. Microwave actually did stop working and we got a full refund, but all the review says Panasonic is still heads above other brands.

On my 2nd Bosch 500 series \[first one lasted \~8 years\], and yes, everything is full of water. But it still cleans better than any other dishwasher that I've used, and I LOVE the silverware 3rd rack. I can also actually put plastic on the bottom rack without it warping, which is another win.

Just bought a new fridge earlier this year and did a bunch of digging and my conclusion was Bosch fridges are probably the closest you’ll get to BIFL right now. I’m sure someone here will draw a different conclusion. If it’s an option buy it through costco, they have a warranty that starts after the manufacturer warranty expires so you’re covered into the foreseeable future

I’ve got a Bosch series 7 and love it but only had for a year so can’t comment on longevity. It gets a LOT of use. Little tip whatever you buy - always leave the door ajar and ideally remove the detergent drawer fully (leave it slightly open at a bare minimum) when not in use - I’ve been doing this since I got my machine and it still looks brand new and not a hint of mould or musty smells.

How are ventless dryers?
They’re safe and work fine, just slower than vented and kick out a bit of heat. Good if you can’t vent outside. Condenser models are meh, but heat pump ventless dryers are efficient and gentler on clothes. For BIFL, look at Miele or Bosch. They’re pricey but can last a bit longer 👌

Yes I'm comparing similar specs, you can buy a whole load of decent machines for 3-400 while Miele start at \~800 and run over 2000. My experience has been that even cheap machines last at least 10 years, so paying 2-5x for a Miele just isn't adding up for me - plus companies like Bosch and Zanussi sell 10x as many machines and have many common parts / larger parts market so availability / price is better - it's easier to find parts for a Volkswagen than a Ferrari...

Are you sure you are comparing similar machines? Here in Finland Miele is about 20-30 % more expensive than Bosch in the same product range. Difference is, that Miele doesn’t offer products under 800 euros. Those 400-500 euro/quid Bosch machines won’t probably last any longer than 300-400 euro/quid Chinese machines. Washing machines are buy once, cry once products. You can go cheap and replace it every few years or buy a good product now and don’t think about it for the next two decades. In some cases it might even make economically more sense to do the former, but for me it’s about the trouble of doing it and I also want to be more sustainable. That said, there are magnificient Bosch machines out there, but they are definitely not 2-4x cheaper than equivalent Miele.

😆... you know that you should not dissassemble the machine, right? It is one of the things that are forbidden in the guide and insurance company might not be keen on paying any accidents that has been caused by 'fixing it yourself' or 'cleaning the condenser by dissassembling dryer to pieces'. And regarding the filter problem, only few models beside Miele has proper filters. They get minimal to none shit to the condenser. Definitely fixing the problem that I have from HAIR clogging the condenser. You are talking about filter quality? You cannot replace the one with plastic mesh that is the only filter in most available models. And you should not add additional sponge filters as you like... sponge filters such Miele has seems to be available in few Siemens/Bosch models. You obviously do not know about the current market, why bother to comment? :D

I use Bosch power tools batteries with a USB adapter. The adapter is about $15 (similar solutions available from other tools makers). I also use a NoCo jump start box. If necessary, both could provide power for a long time.

Our Siemens iq500 heat pump dryer has three filters: 2 consecutive ones in the door and one sponge like one below at the base. It was not too expensive, around €600,-. Up until now I have been quite happy with all my Bosch/siemens appliances in the house (they are part of the same company).

I stumbled on the Bosch Icon blades years ago when outfitting a family member, and [they seem to test excellently](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3S8udUSKtY). Don't forget to clean the wipers when you clean the windows. If you're having durability problems, I'd run a clay over the windows and see if you pick up grit or any kind of roughness that would impact wiper lifespan. Maybe consider a rain-shedding coating, like the classic "Rain-X". Windscreen cleaner's main active ingredient is methanol, except in California where methanol isn't allowed in washer solution.

$2K Amazon Budget—Help Me Turn Digital Money Into Sawdust
A good place to start educating yourself is the project farm YouTube channel. He does excellent reviews, buying the products instead of receiving free items from manufacturers. Some companies don't extend warranty to tools purchased on Amazon, so shopping locally is the smart move. If you choose that option, use your Amazon card for consumables like blades and bits or non-powered tools like wrenches. Cordless is the way to go with most power tools. Your first decision is which company you want to purchase. DeWalt, Milwaukee, and Makita are the top brands. Batteries do interchange between brands. Ryobi and Rigid are both manufactured by the company that owns Milwaukee. Ryobi has a bunch of gadgety tools. Rigid isn't as refined as Milwaukee, but has a lifetime warranty, including batteries. They are the only company to have a lifetime warranty. The only way to get this warranty is to purchase tools from Home Depot. Bosch and Metobo are somewhat second tier, not always having the best/latest features. Though some Bosch corded tools are very good. The best jigsaw I have is a Bosch. Their corded miter saw is very nice. Between the big three they all have certain tools that are best in class, which makes it difficult to decide which brand to purchase. Your primary tools will be a drill, a ¼" impact for driving screws and bolts, a circular saw, and a sawzall(reciprocating saw). In addition, you will find a power miter saw useful. An orbital sander is handy. I prefer corded for the sander as batteries either don't last long enough or the batteries that last longer make the tool heavy and awkward. If you purchase a reciprocating saw, invest in carbon toothed blades. They last a long time and power through wood and metal faster than standard blades. They go through metal extremely fast. For a shop vac Rigid is top of the line. While they share the same name as the power tools, the vacuums are made by a different company, Emerson Electric. Continuing with the Rigid name, their plumbing tools are top notch. Again, made by a different company. Their pipe wrenches are excellent. It is handy to have two pipe wrenches, one to hold the stationary pipe and the other to tighten the fitting. If you have pedestal sinks where the plumbing is visible, a smooth jawed pipe wrench won't mar the plumbing fittings. Other top tier brands of tools include Knipex, Fein, Festool(makes the best power miter saw but is very expensive), and Wera.

We do a lot of DIY projects and just finished a complete bathroom rebuild (i.e. gut to studs, new subfloor, etc.). The most-used things offhand would be these: * hammers (framing, claw, something small for tight spaces) * miter saw (powered) * oscilating saw (we have a Bosch and I love it) * drills (corded hammer drill, cordless 18v) * sanders (5" ROS, 1/4 sheet finishing) * abrasives for sanders (I keep everything from 40 to 220 for DIY projects, but much higher grits for finish work when needed) * air compressor (smaller pancake model will do) * air hose(s) and fittings * air nailers (framing nailer, 16g finish nailer) * good level (longer is better if you can store it, but I like to have 36" and 48" at least) * circular saw (5 1/2" will work for most things, 7 1/4" if you're doing bigger projects) * jigsaw: don't need it often, but when you do... * handsaws (multiple...I probably own 20 but all you really need is a rip, a crosscut, and a pull/Japanese, plus a coping saw if you're doing trim) * rasp: I keep a Shinto rasp in the box, use it often * squares: framing square, compound/tri-square, sliding bevel, all useful * drill bits (selection, but esp. larger spade bits and hole saws in the 1-3" sizes so you can run wires/plumbing) * driver bits (muti-sets are fine) * screwdrivers: a good pair in at least slotted/phillips will be handy * caulking gun * pliers: mostly slip-joint and vice grips for basic stuff * adjustable wrenches: a few sizes, including very small, will be handy if you're doing plumbing * straight edges (I like the 48" ruled ones, use them for cutting as well as measuring) * clamps (you can never have too many clamps, all sizes/styles) * tape measure(s) (we usually have 2-3 on a job site, plus a 50 or 100' reel tape) * extension cords (I keep 25 and 50' around for sure, longer if working outdoors) * PPE: masks, glasses, gloves etc. as appropriate * Electrical stuff (if you're doing any electrical): multi-meter, voltage probe, outlet tester, wire cutter/stripper, lineman pliers, tape, wire nuts, fish tape or rod, screwdrivers, etc.) * utility knives: I've always used the traditional Stanley ones, probably own 8-10 by now as they always disappear * carpenter's pencils: easy to sharpen with said utility knife That's a quick list-- plenty to get you to $2K.

Love my dewalt drills and drivers, these go on sale on Amazon frequently as a set. I know people say go cheap and that works for some things but I also like things that will last. Choose wisely. You will be constantly using a cordless drill. It’s my number one tool as a home owner. Other stuff like I bought the fake version of a kreg jig on Amazon and it’s fine does exactly the job a real kreg does. Get a decent hammer. You can probably go cheaper here just do some research and make sure the handles don’t break etc. get a good screwdriver set. Doesn’t need to be top notch but I would just go with something with the simple acrylic handles as the cheap rubber can disintegrate over time. You don’t need tops for this. Get a Bosch palm sander. It’s highly rated and also affordable. Get some good tool bags to transport your stuff. If you buy cheap drill bits they will break. I’m a homeowner, diyer, deyer, low budget person. Every tool is a decision on what you need and how much time you will be using a tool. You buy higher end like a drill for constant use. Drill bits etc are more worth it to get a mid tier not chinesium. Anyway here’s my list of what you want for your home. Cordless drill and driver (better off good brand). Drill bits get mid tier. Decent hammer. Set of screwdrivers mid tier but not fancy. Random orbital sander (get name brand). Putty knife get cheap and replace when worn. Utility knives don’t need top of the line look for something with a good handle that folds I buy the kobolt or husky brands at the store. Actually get a few. Tape measure get a good one like fat max. It’s worth it as cheap ones not only break but can be inaccurate. Carpenter square, mid. If you got the funds get a small air compressor with a finish nailer. I got a cheap finish nailer on Amazon it’s still working fine and got the compressor at harbor freight. Anyway that’s my starter list

You're getting a lot of general advice, but here's my two-cents on actual tools as a general contractor and avid home-project doer: The tool I grab the most is my cordless drill. I like a 12V Bosch (I've replaced it 3x in the last 20 years), but any quality name brand 12v will work. Milwaukee, Makita, DeWalt.... Pick one and plan on sticking with it. Then get a decent 3/8" socket set in sae and metric, along with some channel-locks in 8" and 10", an adjustable wrench, and a 12 or 16oz hammer. A decent folding razor knife and extra blades. A tool pouch and a pencil and a head lamp and a tool box. With these tools you can do 90% of home maintenance projects. Buy more specialized tools as you have projects that need them, but these are the ones I would keep on hand.

Depends on what kind of woodworking you want to do. I’ll throw a general list of the stuff I have below. Didn’t get all of it from Amazon. Pick a brand of tool you want to use before anything else for your battery powered stuff. Buy only that brand for battery powered. Corded can be any brand. Bosch ROS20VSC palm sander I generally go for Rigid for most of my tools except for anything that uses a round blade. So the reciprocating saw from rigid is good but their table saws aren’t great. If you’re going to get a table saw, prepare to spend a bit chunk of change to get a good one like a jet. Also recommend jet for a jointer if you get one. Rigid 18v drill and driver set, plus some 4a batteries for it, and a spare charger. Dewalt 12” planer, and do yourself a favor and shell out the dough from the beginning to get the helical cutting head. Bosch routers plus a router table. If you do get a table saw, it might have a router table built into it.

My Bosch doesn't have a heating element, but uses Crystal Dry which is Zeolite crystals that when exposed to moisture get hot. Sounds like a gimmick, but works great. Love that I can put any dish anywhere in the dishwasher.

BIFL stick vacuums dont really exist. If you want an actual BIFL vacuum you will have to opt for a bagged Miele or SEBO. If you absolutely want a stick vacuum I'd go for the Bosch Unlimited 6. It's made in Germany, has a 10yr motor warranty, uses standard bosch tool batteries which can be easily replaced and costs 220-250€.

Samsung washer and dryer literally fell apart machine died so I upgraded to Speed Queen.
My husband and I were perusing around Home Depot a few months back and walked by a Bosch refrigerator. We did a double take and came back to it. Almost $5k originally, the tag was just over $1k. We starting looking it over. Not a thing wrong or missing. Loaded it up and took it home. We were not even looking for a fridge. It was such an amazing price for the unit. It is now the garage fridge that will be moved inside when our 22 year old GE Monogram goes out. (Hopefully no time soon) we have really come to love Bosch products!!

What products used to be well built back in the day but now are low quality?
Any of these products people are talking about have quality available, it’s just a little hard to find and a little more expensive. Brands though, they absolutely sell out and reduce quality all the time. Craftsman for instance used to make great wrenches. They reduced quality and price, and now Mac tools fills that niche. Kitchenaid used to make great dishwashers, now they suck but Bosch is good. Meile washing machines are fantastic, but finding them can be a bit tricky.

Dewalt or Milwaukee. My dad was a master carpenter and a millwright welder. My husband is an electrician. That’s all we have and use. We’ve even been able to sell a bunch of my dad’s old corded Milwaukee stuff as he’s downsizing. One dewalt product I love is of all things their electric weed whacker. We got attachments for a pole chainsaw, a hedge trimmer and a rototiller. But we only got that last year so I have yet to see the BIFL capabilities. But if the 2 you are asking about are the 2 you can get easily I would go with Bosch.

Is this worth $350 still? Found out I'm gonna need a new one and of course they recommend a $1500 brand (speed queen). My current is a maybe 10 year old kenmore elite and only issue is the bottom is starting to rust out.
It's worked out many times for me, I have never bought a new dishwasher or washing machine. I live in a country though where there are people who fix them up and give you a warranty (free replacement only) for 2 years post sale. Never needed to use it, my current washing machine is going on 7 years now without issue and the dishwasher at 5. Already thousands of dollars better off since they are German Bosch and Miele

They make the best router, planer, track saw, table saw. Home improvement gifts for a first time homeowner?
A Skil circular saw is an industry standard for hand-held saws. It's a little pricey compared to others, but still is the number 1 reviewed saw as of last year. This is for the corded version and has been manufactured for years. It's about as perfect as a circular saw that can be and will be passed down to your grandkids. Whatever battery powered tools you choose, stick with 1 brand so batteries can be used in any tool. There's 3 tiers of tools, low, homeowner level, and professional grade. In my 20s, DeWalt was pro level only. Same with Bosch. Both are still very good tools and fit within the homeowner level. There's no real reason for a homeowner to spend double the cost for professional grade unless their paycheck requires it. I find that looking at several online reviews helps a lot in determining what is a good value. I also look at personal reviews to check the validity of online reviews.

What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy—but now you swear by it?
Is it really so much the hardware as it is the detergent they force you buy? So industrial strength I was worried about our health using it. But without it the Miele dishwasher would stink like a sewer and didn't clean. It requires the chemical decomposition of that detergent. We love our Bosch much, much more.

A bowl with a little spaghetti sauce, face down on the bottom rack, would come out like it never even got rinsed. Bought a Bosch and installed it myself. For a BIFL mixer go to Ankarsrum, or possibly Bosch Universal. My mixer was originally lablelled Magic Mill, now called Ankarsrum is now 25 years old. It's solid and has been making our family's bread all these years. My typical batch is 5 loaves of 100% whole grain bread. I've also had my Whisper Mill (now Wondermill) grain mill nearly 26 years.

24" stackable washer dryer recommendations
Hi there, thanks for writing! So we had a bumpy road but it worked out ok in the end. We initially went with a 24" Bosch 500 washer/ventless dryer combo. Worked great for a little bit, but the dryer started to fail after about 5 months -- I suspect the lint built up and where it a "self-cleaning" (though nonremovable) heatpump, we couldn't access it and service it ourselves. Other parts failed as a result from the buildup and despite some repairs, they didn't take. The outcome? We got Bosch to replace our 500. We went with a 300 -- technically a downgrade, but it has a removable condenser filter, plus accessible sump pump. THAT ensures we can clean out any lint buildup much easier than before. The 300 dryer and 500 washer are working nicely together and have been doing so for just about a year now. We put it through the paces, but use a low amount of detergent and NO disposable dryer sheets (using them is a big no no for Bosch units). I do a full clean on the dryer every 2-3 weeks (clean lint trap by running it under the tap/air drying, clean lint out of condenser filter, remove sump pump hatch and clean out any lint there, then put them all back together when air dried for awhile). Seems to keep things running nicely. I can confirm that the ventless dryer can work well, but if you do go that route, look up some Youtube videos on whether they can be cleaned/self serviced. If you see "self clean" or "non-removal heat pump", suggest to stay away. Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions! Good luck in making our decision!

Had a Bosch pro silence for 10 years, honestly the best vacuum we ever had until one of the kids tried to fill it with water. Still works as a workshop back up but no good for the house. Now have A Miele stick which is great on carpet but the canister is small and gets full way too fast on old carpet on. Just pushes things around on the hard floor

Have a Bosch Unlimited Pro Animal. It's a cordless vacuum with an electric rotary brush. It works wonders for the shitton of pet hair our double coated dog leaves behind. Battery life is somewhat limiting. But a second battery fixes that. My next one will definitely be a Bosch with Rotary brush.

Fiskars has a good warranty service, but I find that Corona usually has more spare parts available for products in a similar price range. Their products tend to have a more repair-friendly design as well. My favorite power tools to repair have generally been from Bosch, DeWalt, and Makita. They tend to have the most spare parts available for the best prices. The repairability of the KitchenAid Classic/Artisan stand mixers can't be overstated. Parts are easy to get and cheap. Repairs can be a little messy, but require few tools

We bought the Bosch from a corporate website from my wife’s workplace. It was a good discount, but there are similar sales at normal retailers during the year. We didn’t get a combination dryer but a separate lower range Series 4 dryer. Combination machines are best avoided if you have the space because they compromise performance and break down more often.

The only maintenance the Bosches ever needed was to whack some towels through at 60°C or so about once a month, with a bleachy powder like Ariel - particularly if you routinely use liquid detergent. That stops the door seal from going mouldy and the machine smelling. Latterly (last few years or so) we’ve sworn off liquid detergent for anything other than wool/silk stuff. Daz for colours, Ariel for whites. Powder is better for the machine - there’s a reason why laundromats don’t allow liquid detergents. Cheaper too - you’re not paying for all that water!

My 1996 Kitchenaid stand mixer has finally failed. Need a recommendation.
For bread making, get something made specifically for dough, like a Bosch stand mixer. I’ve repaired two kitchen aid mixers, I love them, but for making multiple loafs of bread a week they are not up to the task. My Bosch mixer makes better bread and never bogs down. I thought it was going to be a splurge but now it is a necessity. If you want something a bit fancier the Ankarsrum is phenomenal. Ooni also just launched a new spiral mixer, the Halo Pro that looks amazing. For bread there are much better options than a kitchen aid. If you just do a little bread and lots of other stuff, you really can’t replace it with anything else tho.

If Ankarsrum is out of budget, look at Bosch or Nutrimill mixers. My Nutrimill is 7 years old and still works great and is compatible with most of the Bosch mixer attachments. I prefer it over my my KA.

I have no idea why he deleted it but here is the comment: Washer dryers - The closest to "life" i think you are going to get is either Speed Queen or Miele (of the two the Miele hands down) . If you have the electricity to power a Schulthess, its probably the best machine one the world. Ovens - Miele Cooktops - Thermador Range hoods - Vent A Hood Dishwasher - Miele - Bosch is acceptable but not its equal. For fridges/freezers - it's probably either Sub Zero, Liebherr ,or Miele. Toaster the Dualit is hard to beat

Anyone here have a Samsung appliance after 5 years that hasn't had a problem?
When we bought our house 6 years ago, it came with Samsung appliances. The house we left had KitchenAid. KA is not high end stuff, but it’s still decent quality. We knew the Samsung stuff would disappoint, and it has. The dishwasher was always crap, and thankfully died. The fridge had the ice maker go out in year 4. The gas stove top is just ok. The burners don’t always light right away and heat unevenly. The top is a nightmare to clean. The gas oven is fine, but the racks are too small to hold a family size Papa Murphy pizza without curling up the crust against the back of the oven. The microwave is fine, but features like soften butter don’t work well enough to actually soften butter. We dislike the appliances enough that we considered replacing the entire suite when the dishwasher died. I would never buy another Samsung appliance. The Bosch dishwasher we got is outstanding!

BIFL kettle recommendations
Mostly power rating (3kW vs 1.8kW), but as a result the whole market is different. I can confidently say, in the UK and EU, go out and buy a Bosch kettle, or at the bottom end of the market a Breville - but they don't sell the same products stateside. A full grain leather belt, or Darn Tough socks are the same wherever you are, a plug in electrical appliance, particularly a high power one like a kettle, is more localised.

What is your current BIFL item you recommend to everyone?
Just build up a decent little set by going through Facebook Marketplace or however you find local stuff. You don't need a SnapOn wrench if you'll use it once a year. Get a cheap wrench, then as you use it more, you may need to upgrade to something nicer. I found a random bucket of tools on Facebook 3 years ago for $50 that included hammer, wrenches, ratchet, sockets, all kinds of general use stuff. Half of it doesn't have a brand name on it. Most of it is still usable. When you need to upgrade, even going to mid-tier stuff like Dewalt, Ryobi, Kobalt will work for MOST people. Then you can get into even nicer stuff like Bosch, SnapOn, Makita, Milwaukee, etc. People debate best brands - whatever. Some brands are better for their auto-tools. Some are better for construction stuff. I personally have all kinds of Dewalt tools because my brother gifted to me a combo with hammer and impact drills a few years ago, so I just keep it Dewalt to interchange batteries. Just know that whatever brand you go with, you'll all of a sudden start seeing amazing deals for all the other stuff except yours.

We have a total Bosch kitchen. Dishwasher whisper quiet. A+ Microwave down for 4th time. Not impressed. Bad design. C- Oven Gas does it's job. Fridge ice maker died during COVID. No replacement part available at time. Now fixed. A- None connected to the internet either.

French door (and side by side) is where most of the problems are (with ice dispensers on the front). If you are not particular about the style, you could get a two door (top or bottom freezer) with no dispensers on the door simple fridge. GE/Frigidaire/Whirlpool could work. Pick whichever model provides you the most functions. If you are looking for premium, Miele could fit that price range (Bosch if you are looking for Counter depth). Consumer reports lists LG, Miele, GE for bottom freezer; Wirecutter does almost similar.

I think you took my point the opposite to my intent, the problem with Bosch is that it has become a megacorporation with many internal problems with standards enforcement. Ownership is still the Bosch family, yes, but Walmart is still family-owned by it's founders as well. Bosch is the largest supplier in Europe for many things, like automotive parts. In previous decades, they were not the largest, but they were one of the top quality. They used this reputation and the wealth it generated to take over many of their competitors, assembling a juggernaut of production with a unified face, but their reputation for quality suffered internationally. Bosch is not the first name anyone reaches for anymore, and they know it, which is why they target the mid- or low-sector of many markets price-wise now.

No it doesnt. Example is bosch. Their professional line is better than makita imho and makita is years behind on battery tech. What makita does with 40v, bosch and hilti do with 18v. I like my makita stuff but bought it only because there was nothing from bosch back then that did the job (gardening tools espcly). I'd Pick bosch over makita for Innovation only, but thats the problem if you only do one thing. Bosch most likely has way more experience with batterys and drivers since they also built many other stuff for other Industrys that need similar things like ebikes, cars ect.

I am team blue too. All the equivalent brands are close, but I worked at a Tool Repair Place for a year or two. And I can tell you, if you ever need to fix your tools Bosch is best for service, they take it very seriously. Then Makita. Then Milwaukee. Then DeWalt. Dewalts service was a nightmare to deal with, waiting for ever for parts. Bosch actually ships out their service parts before they do new tool orders. Which is rare in capitalism, to take care of the people who already purchased the stuff instead of trying to get more people your product is like the antithesis of modern capitalism. But I will still always buy makita. My dad is a mason and had makita my childhood and i saw those drills and such take a shit kicking that would put down most mules, and they still kept ticking. And are still ticking now for the most part.

I absolutely agree with you and I’ve had analysis paralysis about things I shouldn’t have. My husband is a lot more likely to just buy things and that causes issues, too. Like, we got a tv on a great deal, but it doesn’t support some apps that we use a lot. If I were the one deciding I would have known. I also think some “buy it for life” stuff is just more expensive and not that much better. For example. I bought a speed queen washer, the tr7. I love it and I was so mad at my Samsung washer breaking all the time I was willing to spend money. I have wondered over the years if spending double was actually worth it though. But I can’t really know until it lasts 20 years or not! I also had my last Bosch dishwasher go out after less than 6 years. I was pretty mad and almost went with a Kitchenaid, but got another Bosch for about $400 more. Will it really be worth it, or am I just a snob because of Reddit reviews and needing to have something other people think will last a long time? Maybe I would be better off without analyzing everything.

Something to consider is that having these brands under a parent company doesn't necessarily mean all the companies in question are micromanaged to work the same exact way. You can get some different results from their offerings, because having the different brands might be to serve different clientele with different needs. It's part the reason i'm not ashamed of my dewalt goodies: having used ryobi and black and decker and craftsman drills, the dewalt ones have factually lasted longer under the duress I put them through, and were cheap enough too. Not as good as my Bosch or Makita stuff, but still good enough

I almost never read reviews now, >50% are fake/paid and the rest are by people who know jack about the product but liked the box it came in or the colour matches their kitchen or whatever. Before I bought our perfectly good Bosch dishwasher I read reviews - one said it was brilliant, cleaned perfectly and was whisper quiet and the other said it was the **loudest thing they'd ever owned** and did a *terrible* job. The reality is most products are pretty good these days AND cheaper than they've ever been, people have rose-tinted glasses and survivorship bias for the good old days.

It'll depend If you frequently run washes at 60°C+ then you probably won't have to do them more than every 6-12 months If you're the average person who only does 30-40°C washes? Then every 1-2 months For my Bosch machine it recommends running their cleaning cycle with a powdered detergent containing a oxygen based bleaching agent. For machines without a dedicated cleaning cycle just run the hottest wash it has with powdered detergent Avoid vinegar, they're terrible for washing machine internals

We got the 500 series a few months ago and love it. In hindsight I probably should've just ponied up another couple hundred for the 800, but oh well. The only thing that makes me rage is washing lightweight plastic containers. I cook a lot and use lots of deli containers and because the jets are so powerful this thing likes to flip those little shits over and fill them with water unless I strategically weigh them down with heavier items. I can live with it. Just have to be careful when I pull the racks out so I don't slosh water everywhere.

Soryy, maybe I worded it wrong. I usually do 500g batches, but I didnt find a video only about either 250g or 1 kg batches. And the machine cannot knead the 250g batches correctly, so I was a bit worried if it can knead the 500g batch correctly or it needs 1kg of a batch at least.

Miele or Gaggenau for any of the above. Panasonic inverter for microwave. Sub-zero and Wolf for fridge and oven / hob respectively. Fisher and Paykel also good for fridge, as is Leibherr (make Mieles fridges). Bosch good if you want more middle range, especially their dishwashers but go for the more expensive end of their range as they do a huge variety.

I have the same model as you OP. Was going to get it from Costco but they don't install in my area, so I got mine from a local appliance store in June, so 9 months now. I sing the same praises as you. Best dishwasher I have ever owned or used. I love the adjustability of the middle rack. I needed the built in water softener as I don't have one for my whole house and my water is bad...as in my 8 year old home is on its 3rd or 4th water heater. I literally get excited to use this dishwasher because it works so well. Mine works well with crystal dry. I do open the door after the cycle is over, usually after about 30 minutes. I have the 19lb bag of Aromasong brand salt from Amazon for mine.

I have that Bosch now and have had upper level Bosch models as well (we moved). IMO, the 100 is not made as well, as the racks are not nearly as strong. It does clean the dishes just fine, so it’s just a matter of loading much more carefully than some family members would like. 🙄 Ours was under $400 from a local appliance store.

Best HYGENIC blender - no mold, no critters, nothing (smoothies only)
I've always found it easiest to clean benders by rinsing them and then running them with hot soapy water in them, before rinsing them again. I don't know about long term robustness, but we have a Bosch blender where you don't just take the lid off, but you can unscrew the base with the blades in. So it's easy to get to every nook and cranny. So if it's being able to strip it down and see that every inch is clean. That's an option.

Another vote for Bosch. And if you don't like the label, Thermador (which is Bosch internals with a prettier UI). Due to EPA regs in effect from 2008 to roughly now, the best dishwashers are going to be either pre-08 ones or the Bosch/Thermador ones that incorporate Zeolite. For the rest of 'em, the energy budget means either water spots, ineffective cleaning, or high likelihood of breaking down.

Bosch 800 all the way but I understand your hesitation. My sisters Electrolux dishwasher has been nothing but a pain the last few years (about 7 yrs old total when replaced recently) she replaced with Bosch 800 with my recommendation. I’ve had my Bosch 800 for 4 years now going strong no issues. Electrolux dishwasher hinge failed at first. Wasn’t able to fix without replacing so they lived with it. Then stopped washing/drying properly after 6-7 years.

What's the oldest appliance you own?
Shockingly it was a Samsung Dishwasher, replaced with a Bosch 800. It’s a Whirlpool Fridge with a regular door, bottom chest drawer freezer. It’s a Kenmore dryer. And we have a Samsung washing machine, top loader, and it’s been a trooper for 8+ years. We got really lucky with the Samsung stuff, I think we just missed out on the really bad motherboards and such being older and pre Covid. But we won’t buy them anymore with all their current issues.

We just replaced our 30 year old Bosch dishwasher, only because we were absolutely unable to a replacement for the part that failed. If we had, it would still be kicking right now. That leaves us with the 1994 Sub Zero fridge and the similar timeframe Decor wall oven.

Bosch dishwasher - purchased it in 2007. 17 ½ years... probably 2500 cycles. Three DIY repairs. Easily, our most reliable appliance ever. It will have to be determined BER before we replace it with another Bosch.

I see the Bosch 800 series recommended a lot as a BIFL refrigerator. Can someone explain what features make it so appealing?
Don't know model number. Had it for 3 years. We've had no issues and it holds temp great. I do know ours has two compressors, which is supposed to be good for redundancy and somehow means it's to the level of repair, don't replace. That's the extent of my knowledge except for the fact that the veg drawer is freaking a game changer at keeping fresh veggies longer.

Even paying the upper end of market value for the used market, you still get a much nicer product than what the same money would buy new, and you get to help keep more unnecessary stuff from being produced Its a bit intimidating to start buying expensive stuff online, but once you get a feel for how sellers in a particular niche tend to advertise and document things, you can get a very good idea of how the things will function.

Looking for opinions and/or info on what BIFL products are hard to find
In my college days I went through like five hand blenders. All of them from discount stores or cheap brands (think Action, Tristar, etc.) Decides to invest in a bosch hand blender which was far more expensive in comparison (80 euro’s compared to 8-18 euro’s). Still have it till this day. So I would say mid price range products are superior to low price products as for hand blenders.

Bosch 800 French Door Refrigerator - Doors won't open all the way unless I pull the fridge further out, exposing unfinished non-stainless painted part of fridge.
I’ve had this refrigerator for 3 years. It’s beautiful and keeps food fresher for longer than I could imagine. The alarm could be louder but if you hear it, a door is slightly open. Back to rjrmum, I don’t regret my decision at all but I was mortified when I found that I couldn’t push it all the way back to the wall. There’s a full 11 inches open behind it. There was never a niche for my fridges so I could always see one side and none of them were stainless. At least this one is a gray color on the sides. The one side is fully visible and I bought a large magnetic placemat organizer to stick on that size so items can’t be pushed off the counter. The other side is next to a wall. There is only 1/2 inch between fridge and that wall but the door opens completely. If not for that gap on the other side I wouldn’t have fretted over it. I’m about to remodel and none of the kitchen designers has noticed the gap until I mention it. Honestly rjrmum, if you pulled yours out 3/4” the door would open completely. Also this is my 4th fridge. I always had great ones and this is the best by far. None of the doors open 90 degrees.

How can you tell if the Bosch dishwasher is finished and clean vs not started and dirty? I like the nifty red light that shows it's cleaning but when it's finished the light goes out. would be great if there was a green light for done
My new (Feb'25) Bosch SHE53C85N/27 has a "CLEAN" light that comes on at the end of cycle. It's white, not green, and then turns off ten minutes later. Pretty handy /s.

Vitamix. Robocoupe. Bosch (kitchen appliances). Lee Valley/Veritas. Lie Nielson. Herder chef knives. Mac knives. G and L guitars. Taylor guitars (I'm not a fan of their style/tone, but their QC is best in the acoustic factory guitar scene. PRS guitars (some of the best factory electric guitar QC). Toyota/Lexus. They just work. I have a Honda, which is pretty reliable...but they chitzied on plastic floorpan clips instead of metal. Bottom of my car started going "whoosh" after 54000 miles. Never had an issue on my 1997 Corolla. Spyderco. Victorinox. Leatherman. solid warranty, and decent QC, even with all the Chinese clones. Mitotuyo micrometers. Built different. Tom Bihn bags. Waterfield designs. IMHO significantly better and tougher than Chrome (wore a hole through a corner in 1 month) and Timbuck2. Excellent ergos. Excellent workmanship and materials. Patagonia.

I would buy Siemens/Bosch or Miele- a front loader that heats its own water and spins to 1600 rpm. They have better bearings, and cold water only hookup is awesome. They last forever and are maintainable

That means that Bosch washers are designed to run for 5000 washes. At an average of 8 washes a week, a Bosch washer is designed to run 12 years. Whereas a Speed Queen is designed to run for 10400 washes @ 8 washes a week comes out to 25 years. It means that the Speed Queen is more durable and longer lasting than the Bosch. If the opposite were true, then you would see Bosch washers in laundromats and not Speed Queen washers.

The best recommendation is to buy the lowest tech one you can find. FWIW, here is our experience with refrigerators: We bought a basic freezer-on-top when we bought our first house in 1998 and never had a single issue with it by the time we moved out in 2015. We moved in to our current house in 2015 and it had a fairly low tech Kenmore side-by-side that in the house from the day it was built in 2004. It may have been a model that was sold exclusively through Sears but I can't remember for sure. No issues until 2017 or 2018 when the ice maker went bad. I replaced that myself and I'm not the most handy guy in the world. We had no issues until last year when it finally died. That's 22 years. We replaced it with a $2400 GE door-in-door side-by-side with plenty of bells and whistles. It lasted 11 days before the compressor died. It was replaced with an identical model but, the door-in-door latch was defective and we had to request a replacement handle/latch combo. No issues since then but a fridge that died less than 2 weeks old (and there are plenty of GE fridges with this problem) instills a sense of pessimism. My advice? If you can afford it, buy a Bosch or another higher end brand that does everything you want. Otherwise buy the most basic version of what you want. YMMV. Every junk brand has a decent number of people who say it's great and every high end brand has a bunch of people who hate it. The guys who called them family in when the Kenmore was in the throes of death said to avoid Samsung and LG.

I’ve had Bosch dishwashers in 2 previous homes and they were the bomb. If this current DW ever needs replacement it will be a Bosch. My Miele canister vacuum has served me well for 20 years in my dog +cat home, and I bought it used.

In an age of things designed to be replaced, what currently-produced 1) trucks, and 2) cars come closest to BIFL?
I wonder if anything is, and that's so tragic. We just replace a Maytag dishwasher that was maybe 6 years old. The pump quit working well over a year ago, but we knew we had some upcoming expenses and waited to replace it. We bought a Bosch because the locally owned appliance store (with their own repair people) said that's the brand with the fewest service calls. Fingers crossed we get at least a decade out of it. We had a similar issue with a washing machine. It broke weeks out of warranty. We had purchased it from Lowe's and they were no help. We went to that same locally-owned store, asked for an old school washing machine with no computer chips, and went with what they suggested. It's been working perfectly for at least 8 years.

How to research large appliance options (washer, dryer, and dishwasher).
For washing machine, get a Speed Queen. Can typically find used/refurbished Speed Queen top/front loaders on Craigslist, FB Marketplace and laundromat distributors for $300-$550+. For dryer, get the simplest used dryer you can find that works. Speed Queen dryers are built like tanks but the quality gap between dryers is not as large as the quality gap between a Speed Queen washer and everything else. For dishwashers, the consensus is Bosch. Get the 300/500/800 series. Do not get the 100 series as it's a step down in quality. The problem with review sites is that many of them make money off of the product links. So they are heavily biased. Consumer reports does good reviews, but they fail with Speed Queen because they only test the Speed Queen ECO setting which everyone says not to use.

Nikon D7000. Only because that's the only thing i have owned for long. Now my mentality is bug once cry once. Bought a Vitamix ascent 3500. Planning to buy a Bosch 800 dishwasher and a long lasting Couch (not sure of the brand yet). We'll see.

No messing around with chargers, no being encumbered by heavy batteries. One "ecosystem," no compromises when the better version of a tool is incompatible with your batteries. There are trades that have a need for cordless, but as a homeowner I spent half this weekend up in my attic crawling around rafters and insulation. The extension cord was not a problem. I was using a DeWalt contractor's drill and a Black and Decker rotary tool. The only battery operated tool I carried was a headlamp. A few weeks ago I took down a pergola in my back yard using a Bosch reciprocating saw, then ground out the metal base with Bosch angle grinder. They're all lightweight and all run on 110v.

I saw this too. We had an 18 year old Frigidaire with an ice maker in the door. The ice maker leaked at one point, so the previous homeowner disconnected it but the fridge kept trucking. We went to a local appliance store and got the same model. We had such odd stairwells that we had two options: Frigidaire or GE. The appliance place said they repair more GEs than Frigidaire, and we found good reviews of this model. Still early, but four years later, it's going strong. Ideally, we would have gotten a Bosch. But they didn't make a narrow and thin enough model.

Is Bosch 800 really the best dishwasher?
So, we had to have another series of repair visits and finally we got a repairman who used to work for Bosch, he was able to at least get the power on and read the error codes. The final problem ended up being the water pump. However, the original issue was the way it was installed. For some reason they used an old Bosch power distribution receptacle that's known to have issues (the one installed with my 500 years ago burned up as well) instead of the recommended way now, which is to use a normal appliance cord plugged into a regular electrical receptacle. Had our electricians put another receptacle under the sink dedicated to the dishwasher and the last competent repairmen wired the appliance cord to the dishwasher and plugged it in. So far, it's still alive. The receptacles they used to supply with the dishwasher would short and eventually melt/burn, damaging other components.

Best tracksaws, routers, good orbit sanders. For rough timber frame carpentry: Mafell For drilling in concrete: Hilti FOR BEGINNERS OR HOBBISTS: Metabo: good overall, usually quiet inexpensive, made in germany, outstanding quality for price and features, practically bosch for hobbists. Also has 18v allience named CAS, would recomend to anyone looking for tools. Bosch: pretty expensive, but got everything you need. especially the basics. Practically last forever, especially corded tools. Has all the cool stuff form the specialist brands in blue. Milwaukee: Only worked with 12v dirlls, but seems pretty good in quality. Cons: made in china, no compatability with anything, just as expensive as bosch, more expensive then metabo. IMPORTANT: Get corded tools (with exeptions). You dont need everything battery powerd. Especially stuff that you use a lot in one secession, or only very few times. MY SUGGESTION: 12v or 18v Drill by Metabo (or just following hammerdrill with regular attachment) Bosch GBH 2-21F for concrete drilling, drilling big holes and driving large screws, great drill, lasts generations, pretty cheap aswell Old used festools Tracksaw TS 55 or 75 (corded) random old orbit sander, from above mentioned brands otherwise just get the stuff you need from the manufacturers i mentions "as for begineners" STAY AWAY FROM: Ridged, Ryobi, Makita (kindof), mayby dewalt (feels wierd and cheap) as well as hilti, hitachi (ex hioki) and mafell. just to expensive with practically no compatability

I have Bosch. When I started out, I got a refurbed drill and impact set for a reasonable price. Then I felt sort of stuck in the ecosystem. The tools have been reliable and batteries have run flawlessly for over a decade. My only dig at Bosch is that they don't have some of the tools that other brands offer. They seem a little more limited for the home gamer and more geared toward pros. I do think stepping up to 18v makes sense, since that is what the mainline tools for the manufacturers are, but that's just my thought.

Real answer is what tools do you need? Almost everyone makes a good drill, impact, and sawzall. I now have an unholy amalgamation of battery systems. Framing nailer, you need ryobi, ridgid, or Milwaukee. Plunge/tracksaw you might want Bosch, makita or Milwaukee, but not ryobi. 1/2 impact for cars, Milwaukee, ridgid, ryobi. Tree lopper(amazing tool) only dewalt. I haven’t run into anything “bad” The other trick is sometimes the tool on sale is cheaper with the batteries than the one that is on the platform you have. I have a ridgid framing nailer because it is the same as the ryobi and Milwaukee and was 200 dollars cheaper with the batteries, then bare tool on the other platforms.

Maybe "Reverse" BIFL
I have a couple. 1st is an alarm clock that I bought, I believe in 2008. It projected the time on the ceiling and automatically set the time when plugged in. (I can’t figure out how it does it! No wifi as this was way before wifi) It’s been drug off the nightstand, dropped, moved, boxed up in storage when cell phones became the thing to use as an alarm clock. My kid (little fella) asked for a clock with big numbers for his room. I dug it out and cleaned it. Plugged it in and it’s still working like new. If I recall it was about $15 The other is the Bosch dishwasher that came with my house. I know it’s pretty old but not sure how old. Im think maybe 2002. When we moved it we discovered it ran, but didn’t clean. Had it serviced. Was a cheap part. 10 years later it won’t die. I really want a dishwasher that has the 3rd rack for utensils. Nope. It’s still whisper quiet and cleans very well. All the other appliances around have long since been replaced.

12v is a bit small, i have a bunch of Bosch blue 12v, I still occasionally need a bigger tool for the job, but I live the compactness and for. Ajignsaw or planer it works so damn well. But 12v drill is a bit tiny, she that the tools aren't upwards and downward compatible based on an adapter... I don't need a huge jig saw, but a bigger drill ain't bad.

Which tool brand ecosystem would you invest in for 2025 and why for the occasionally frugal DIYer?
I have gone for the Bosch 12v blue for my collection and they are amazing. I am really impressed. Remodelled two rooms so far and loving the small suite but pro capabilities. I drove 25cm screws into old beams to tie them together and I swore I was gonna rip the drill apart, but it still goes and goes. The batteries are not big, which is a drawback, but the tools are mini pro tools, really well designed and built.

Also Makita here. I’ve added two other battery systems though. I have a handful of the very small Bosch 12v tools and have loved every one of them. And for outdoor/garden I’ve gone with Ego. My one experience trying two Makita 18v batteries to power a lawnmower was extremely underwhelming. For demanding stuff like chainsaw and leaf blower you need a little more than the 18v line can give you.

How to research large appliance options (washer, dryer, and dishwasher).
Bosch seems to be the consensus for dishwasher. We ended up with a KitchenAid since Bosches were back ordered for months back in 2021, and it’s already given me a couple of issues. They look very similar on paper but I’d stick with the Bosch if you’re able to swing it. Used may be a good idea if you have an idea on its condition. I do think used is fine for washer/dryer, especially if you can get Speed Queen. A simple unit without a lot of features or electronics is likely good for many more years.

I’m all over the place with my tools. Milwaukee M18 line: drill, driver, impact wrench, angle grinder, circular saw, hackzall. Porter Cable 12” miter saw Dremel rotary tool Ridgid oscillating saw Bosch jig saw and 12v interchangeable head driver I like the battery operated Milwaukee tools for things I use a little more often. I’m a fan of corded tools for things that only may get used a couple of times per year.

I’ve had Bosch tools for years. A little pricey, but the battery ecosystem hasn’t changed very much if at all. The battery I got with a drill set is the same for an impact driver I got a decade or so later.

Exactly. The tools aren't meant to last any less long, they just have less power. And unless you need the extra power, they're perfectly fine. My #1 most used tool is my 12V Bosch driver because it's small and light. It's not common for me to need my bigger 18V drill unless I'm driving in a 14" lag screw or boring a 3" hole.

That's not even relevant anymore. Power = volts * amps. Yes, more voltage can give you more power but so can more amps. Modern 12V tools have more power than 18V tools from even as recently as 10 years ago, because modern battery technology allows for a lot more amperage. I have a little 12V Bosch drill/driver that's no go-to for driving everything that's not huge lag screws, because it's got plenty of power. Yes modern 18V batteries are getting insanely powerful due to increased amp output but just because they're getting more powerful doesn't mean 12V is suddenly irrelevant for contractor use.

The answer is to not feel constrained to one ecosystem. For a situation where you're going to buy a bunch of batteries and need everything to work together (e.g. a contractor/company), this makes sense. For a DIY-er it's unnecessary. The tradeoff is to buy a premium brand (DeWalt/Milwaukee/Makita/Bosch) for your heavily used tools (e.g. drill/driver) or where there is a real quality/functionality benefit. Then buy a budget brand for all the other stuff. I have DeWalt as my main stuff, but there is no way I was paying a price premium to buy a DeWalt caulk gun and 18g nailer for the few times a year I need rhem, so I bought Ryobi.

For people starting out brand new, I’d suggest looking at what you care about. For me I’m choosing Bosch because I want the tools to last for a long time but 92% of their profits go towards charity while other tool companies are accused of using slave labor. Although it might not be the most frugal, I’d choose to spend money towards what I support.

Miele is supposedly the best for front loaders *however* replacement parts and technicians can be expensive If you're looking for a more economical choice I'd go for a Bosch. Parts are extremely common and basically all technicians know what they're doing with them

In Europe Bosch and Siemens appliances are actually made by the same company. Generally have had between 10-15 years lifespan on theirs and they can be repaired. I bought extended warranty when I replaced my last one (Electrolux which died spectacularly) to take it up to 10 years so they will last at least that long.

For me quality of wash and gentleness on cloths trumps bifl on this one. That being said I’ll go with LG. Mine is 8 years old, my sister’s is 15 and both work well still. I had one shirt that I washed a dozen times and it looked new still. Washed it once in a friend’s new traditional top loader and it came out super faded and awful looking. The shirt was basically ruined. For me I’ll save more and do better being able to keep and use my cloths for way longer. If you are in the market for smaller washers, Miele or even Bosch makes a good one. My parents have had those over the years overseas.

Although the sub is very US centric, most BIFL brands in general are European, with some notable exceptions like Patagonia (which you can find in Europe). Kitchen: Demeyere, Le Creuset and Staub. I don't think there's better for cooking than these 3. Rösle kitchen tools. Italian coffee mills and machines from several high end brands. Peugeot pepper mills. Even popular Silestone counter tops are Spanish. Appliances: Miele, Siemens, Bosch... Clothing: (There's a thousand brands, but to name a few BIFL ones) Sunspel, Zegna, Logo Piana, Brunello Cucinelli, Brioni, Falke (although Socks are not really BIFL, they are for sure better than the over hyped Darn Tough around here). Luxury items: Any serious watch brands or luxury hand bags are European, just name a brand. Depending on your budget, you have a lot to choose from. And then depending on other niche stuff that you might be looking for, there's probably some local producer from Italy, Spain or Portugal that will have it in word class quality.

Had to say it for Bosch. If it is for home use all of their products are fine. If you really need to work go for Hilti(when you insist on German) or definitely Makita. No word on Miele, personally I don't understand why they're not world famous.

Miele dishwashers, Bosch power tools, Karcher vacuums. Almost anything German if it has a motor inside it. Nordic and English clothing is good. From boots, to jackets. Fjallraven, Bludstone. Make sure it's made in Europe. Italians also have nice "summer" clothing. Italian leather is also supreme. The French has nice everyday house hold items. It really depends on what you are looking for. There is a lot of variety and usually things made in Europe have a nice bump up in quality regarding the Chinese or SEA counterparts.

30 years and still going - my parents washing machine
I bought a Zanussi washing machine in 2000 and just gifted it to a friend as I needed a bigger one and it was still going strong. The Zanussi moved house 11 times, including international shipping and just refused to die. I also didn't take good care of it, hardly ever cleaned the filter or seals, and never serviced. I never used powder, always liquid and always put directly in the drum not in the drawer (on the advice of a washing machine engineer). Have replaced with a Bosch as can't find Zanussi.

Euro-bros recommend a kettle please!
I've got a Bosch cordless one too. The kettle started to leak after 8 years or so so I bought a new one but kept the old base. The base went wrong on the new one after 5 years so I swapped the old base back. Another few years on still going strong.

I have a simple Bosch one, first one lasted ~8yrs od heavy use eventually the base broke down, new one is going strong for 3 years now. I don't see a reason to buy expensive stuff in this category.
