Good Immersion blenders?
I switched to an immersion blender for the same reason and it’s been way easier to live with than a full blender. I’ve been using a Braun hand blender for a couple years now and it’s held up to hot soups and thicker sauces without feeling weak or rattly.

I got the series 9 kit on sale a few months ago, after having the 3 series for 10 years. It’s a great upgrade and my skin no longer gets irritated when I shave. I can’t speak to the other models, unfortunately.

Braun MultiQuick immersion blenders — 5 vs 7 vs 9?
I ended up buying the 7 and I'm pretty happy with how it operates as a blender. What is the blender *container*? Do you mean the chopper/food processor accessory? The bundle I got came with one chopper accessory (plus the whisk attachment). I don't really use it because I just wanted the immersion blender itself, but that was the bundle available here. The chopper's plastic construction perhaps doesn't seem the sturdiest, but having it "crumble" (it literally disintegrated into small pieces?) sounds extreme. I don't wash plastic stuff in the dishwasher anyway, but at least specifically for this attachment Braun says it is dishwasher safe — **except for the lid (and the gearbox to which the whisk attaches should only be cleaned with a damp cloth).** Regarding the whisk attachment, again, I don't use it because I just needed the blender. I didn't even think they make immersion blenders that extend into two whisks like on a standalone hand mixer, but I now see Braun does have a "double beater" accessory available. Regarding the cover on the button breaking off, first, what part are you specifically referring to? If it's the power button, it doesn't really have a "cover" on mine. Second, I don't see how not having an attachment relates to it breaking or not during a fall. Either way, in accordance to how high the fall was, an external plastic part might just not be rated for sustaining that. The machine itself is mostly an engine, which makes it relatively heavy for its size. Regarding the safety lock functionality, I don't think my model has it. Maybe you have a different variety beyond it being the 9 (mine as mentioned is the 7)? It just runs at varying speeds according to how deep the button is pressed, and it doesn't lock itself between pauses. And what hand mixer doubles as an immersion blender? I searched on Google and didn't find such a product.

How good is the philips oneblade?
I'm clean-shaven. I own a OneBlade and a Braun Series 7, and I love them both. I'm just now ordering a second OneBlade, to store in my toiletries bag so it'll be there when I travel. The one I have resides in one bathroom, while the Braun resides in the other. I rarely do so, but I can attain a perfect shave by starting with the OneBlade and finishing with the Braun. I think that I need a OneBlade in the the other bathroom.

the safety razor will shave your face well. thats what they were intended for. if you want the pivoting head you could always go for the leaf razor. Neither of these will permantently remove the hair, so maybe saving up for laser removal or electrolysis may be more applicable to you. if youre hell-bent on electric, then the braun series 9 is the only one i can recommend, though no electric razor will get as close as a safety razor will

Is this worth the pick up?
I use and love one blade but it's not even close to buy it for life. It does a great job but when i compare it a my Braun razor that cost 4 times as much it's obv less quality. One blade can easly break if you drop it and is quite fragile while i was able to use the braun for 15 years and drop it prob 100 times and still goes strong

Good affordable espresso makers
I have a Braun E40 Espresso Machine that's marvellous. I got it in the 1990s. You can find these on Ebay, other places. Simple to use, easy to service, has a milk frother (steamed). It works by creating steam pressure to heat the water and force it through the coffee. From an espresso afficianado stand point, it doesn't generate "9 bars " of pressure, it generates 1.5 bars. From the standpoint of using good Espresso Roast, Italian Roast, or French Roast beans and delivering an eye opening cup--YES! In your price range I'd look at the De'Longhi machines --some delivering 15 bar pressure which is marvellous and in the $200 range. If I had to replace mine this where I'd go.

What’s the best beard trimmer if you want something that lasts long?

I've had the Phillips for about 10 years. It still works fine and does the job, but after all those years the battery doesn't hold its charge for very long, I have to charge it every few uses. I thought I'd try the Braun, 2 years ago. It's just better - technology has come a long way in those 8 years. It's more comfortable in the hand, more convenient to use, feels generally more solid. On the flip side, it's got some design issues. For instance there's a wheel to choose guard length, which I like over Phillip's slider, but the numbers on it have worn off, so it's hard to see what length you're using. So for durability, Phillips. For performance, Braun. What I do now is I leave the foil shaver on the Phillips and use Braun for everything else.

FSA eligible BIFL items?
Good call on the basics but you can definitely do better than just meds. A solid digital thermometer like the Braun ThermoScan is FSA eligible and will last forever - I've had mine for like 8 years. Blood pressure monitors are covered too if you wanna get fancy with it Also yeah vitamins don't qualify unless you have a prescription unfortunately

Is this just for face or body too? Some posters rightly comment that electric shavers are not necessarily BIFL because of the battery but this is not strictly speaking true - with the right tools and instructions it’s possible to replace the battery in some electric shavers even if they seem on the face of it to be sealed units. I have a Braun Series 9 pro+, I’m not making a recommendation yet because there’s not enough information on your needs, but that specific model you can replace the battery if you follow a step by step guide and have the right tools - and we aren’t talking anything overly exotic. I have all the right tools already.

Nothing beats Kitchen Aid for stand mixers! For hand held I LOVVVVE the Breville hand mixer but hate how fragile the balloon whisks are. And the replacement is constantly out of stock. Leaf razor lifetime warranty
Huh. I've gotten lazy over the years. As a fellow head shaver who has mainly stuck with clippers for two decades (to get it as low as possible) and then depending on the season will get it even closer to the scalp, I used to mess around with disposables, Mach 3 or whatever, and when I first got into safety razors used it for a while (though I'll admit I got the odd cut). But I ended up picking up a nice Braun electric razor a few years ago (waayyyyy nicer than the cheap electric razor I first got in the late 90s / early 2000s) and it's mostly been working for me, though when I regularly use it on my head as well as face I find I have to replace the shave head every year or so. But you've made me question if I want to try something like the Leaf on my head.....I really like the idea of it.

I've had this Braun coffee maker for about 16 years now, and the previous owner had it for probably close to 20 years before that. My buddy has a similar one that's just as old and my mom has hers frok forever ago too. It's simple but it makes a great cup. From what I understand, they don't sell in the US anymore but if you're able to find one second hand from the 90s you should be in good shape. I see them all over the place in Canadian thrift stores too.

Brands That Used to Be BIFL — But Aren't Anymore?
Sad to say this seems to be the case with some of their products lower price point models. I’m still confident with products you pay a bit more for. Kitchen appliances and irons fit that category for me. The current top of the line hand blenders look similar spec to the one I’ve been using for 30+ years. Their line of shavers I’m a bit torn on. Functionally they are better than they’ve ever been but they do have a shorter window of useable life. But maybe that’s just an observation comparing rechargeable vs mains functionality. At least Braun is still committed to manufacturing repairable products and their service support network is still active.

I second that, my 800 watt Braun Multiquick 5 Patisserie is more than 15 years old now and it still works as great it did the first time I received it as a gift from my mom. I’m never replacing this, if mine conks out, I hope they’re still as good in terms of quality. Braun is one of those “if you want peace of mind, buy it for lofe” brands I have in my repository… …alongside Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Bosch, Siemens, Asko, Speed Queen, Hitachi, Mitsubishi Electric, Tiger, Zojirushi, Kyowon Wells, Jura, Delonghi, and such. The list is getting smaller by the years. I hope nothing will change with Braun. I can’t say the same for Toshiba, Whirlpool, GE, Carrier, LG, Samsung, etc. they’ve all gone to sh**.

Blades gave a closer shave but tore up my skin, and electrics just couldn’t handle my thicker beard. I use a Braun series 9 which has been good, it’s been 7 months (not a long time) but it has been performing. But i really wouldn’t say it’s special, it’s good and that’s about it. Only good thing is that it comes with a really charging adapter, some Philips ones now just come with a wire and no plug in power adapter.

Process of finding BIFL
Honestly, for a lot of my items, I just use historical background. If a lot of examples of a given product (say a Hamilton watch, Osterizer blender, Braun electric razor, etc.) have survived regular use for decades and are still functional to this day, I get those. Its a reasonable bet that if they continued to function back then, they will continue to function now. This approach doesn't work for everything of course, but does for me about 80% of the time.

Immersion blenders are 100% worth it if you hate cleaning and mostly make soups, sauces, or small batches of stuff. Just way less drama than a full blender and super easy to rinse and stash away. If you want something that’ll last, go for anything with a metal shaft and at least 300–500W power, plastic ones burn out fast or just feel flimsy. I have the first model Braun hand stick blender, maybe early 90s? It still works! Several years ago I thought for sure it would break, it has a small crack, so I went on ebay and set alerts and all that to snag a good one and finally snagged one, never used, still in its box!! I haven’t had to pull it out yet, maybe I didn’t need it. I can’t understand why this thing won’t break, I’ve been wanting a new one my whole life 😂 After my old hand mixer gave out, which belonged to my mother from the 70s, I bought a Kitchenaid, it was a piece of crap and the mixers stripped out of the holders. I read reviews until I was exhausted and turned to eBay, set alerts, and sniped a professional Sunbeam hand mixer, looks almost exactly like my mom’s, only it is heavier and has a thicker cord. I’m not sure what year it is, it definitely looks like a 70s mixed someone put away and never used. I’ve used it for several years, it is a work horse, I also feel this is never going to break. I have my Vitamix, I think I bought it before 2010, maybe 2008? I got it at a fair, it had an extra pitcher for grains, but I used that for liquids just fine after the first tall pitcher finally leaked. I’ve since bought a stainless steel pitcher at Costco when they were there doing a demo. The salesperson said it would fit my old model, and it does, I love it. I think my old Vitamix could maybe grind concrete and not break. After my old Maytag washer broke after 18 years (it was after whirlpool took over, somehow it wasn’t a bad washer), I finally got a Speed Queen set. People say they are expensive, well, how many washers are you going to buy while this thing you could have had would live on and on. It’s going to outlive me, and that’s fine, it will be inherited and stay with the family.

Older men typically have coarser hair than younger men. The questions I would be asking are: How often does he (intend to shave) How curly does his beard hair grow Then I would be saying: if he shaves daily or every other day, and/or has straight beard/head hair, then a midrange braun will serve him well for years. With regular replacement of the foil and cutter (2 years or so) If he has curly hair or shaves less frequently (3 days or more) I would recommend a higher end Philips/norelco with a similar replacement interval of the cutters/head. I fall into the second camp.

I got a Braun immersion blender as a gift when my daughter was born, for making baby food. She turns 25 this year. I used it heavily for years, through 3 kids, and it still works. I use it for soap making now. I was gifted a Braun coffee grinder when I got my first apartment in 1997. It still works, too. I use a super fancy one for my espresso at home, but the old one still gets used at the lake lot. I definitely didn’t expect to get 30 years out of it.

What modern manufacturers still make long lasting BIFL-worthy items?
DeLonghi group's Braun and Kenwood small kitchen appliance brands remain surprisingly good. Manufacturing is now predominantly in China, but the QC seems to be pretty good. I buy some stuff to refurb and it's incredibly rare for the fault to be anything other than a damaged flex, and they're still generally built so they can be disassembled for repair.

Same here. Braun had a problem about 20 years ago when they experimented with flip design of the trimmer, which was not reliable. They've returned to sliding trimmer design, and the shaver is excellent and very robust.

I have an older-model Braun that I got on Gumtree (like the UK version of Craigslist), there were loads of options for unused or lightly used on there, because people get them and then don't use them, so I would totally recommend getting a second hand one. I suspect all the brands are basically the same, so I wouldn't worry too much about which one. I have pale skin and dark hair, which they say is the optimal combo, and it's working fairly well. I've been using it approximately weekly for about 10 months, and I think a lot of the hair that remains is due to user error (lol) - because you shave first, there's no way to check if you've zapped all the hair, so I've missed some patches I find it leaves me with a lovely smooth finish each time I use it, and it is definitely reducing the hair over time I also have some tips on reducing razor burn if you're interested? Obvs use loads of lube (whether a specific shaving foam, or my preference, hair conditioner), and shave first is the direction of the hair growth, then 45 degrees either side, then 90 degrees either side, then 135, then finally against the grain. It takes a bit longer, but I find I get a much closer shave with no irritation. I also use a safety razor with a new blade, which I think helps a lot.

The Braun works so good for me. I have light skin and dark hair so that helps it to be more effective. I did it once a week for like two months and the hair growth slowed down sooooooo much. I used to have to shave literally every other day and now I find myself going like a week or more and when there is hair it’s barely any. If you never do it after that the hair starts to come back a little bit I think so I do it like once a month.

I love my braun. Don't love the charger/cleaning base. I don't shave all the time, like maybe once or twice in two weeks? Wfh ftw. It seems like every other time I go to use it though, the base is out of cleaning juice. It's alcohol based and literally just evaporates away. Seems like they could seal it up so that doesn't happen. Then the refills for the juice are these giant plastic things that you can't refill or recycle because they end up filled with beard. Lots of waste. If I had it to do over, I'd get the same razor (I think it's a step down from the top one) but not that silly base. Just a regular charger and then I'd clean it manually which is how every razor worked for me before this one. It's not hard.

The food processor has been replaced (killed beyond repair a Cuisinart, bought a used Magimix, had just for year) and the KitchenAid Professional (HA) had to be repaired twice so we gave up and switched to the Braun for bread doughs and barely use it now. #

You’re in the UK so have more options, they sadly don’t seem to iron much here in the US. If you have the space and budget, steam station irons are awesome. LauraStar for megasplurge, Braun/Tefal as medium tier, and Philips on sale as an affordable option but it will still be good. No experience of Rowenta but tons of bad Amazon reviews. They are basically the only steam station option in the US though.

📦 Bought a "new" Philips Norelco shaver from Target… it came clearly USED 😡
[Braun](https://a.co/d/aULiWuI) is the brand and razor I've had for the last 7 years and it's done just fine, never any issue except needing new heads every once in a while. I would not consider it BIFL though, nor from Philips, unless you know something I don't about their warranty? From what I can find, Philips does *offer* limited warranty on their products but not on the shave heads themselves.

What is the longest lasting item you've bought?
My friends parents were gifted a Braun Immersion blender in 1992. They used this often until my friend went to college in 2008, where he used it daily for protein Shakes. Until gifting it to me in 2018. I have since used it daily for shakes. It refuses to die no matter how much ice, frozen fruit, and rough throws into the drawer I can hit it with. And I have really tried to kill it so I can justify buying a vitamix. But no, the little Braun mixes on.

Can someone please rec a drip coffee maker that won't rust on the base where the pot sits? Bonus if it is 6 cups or less. Even being careful, mine always drip and rust.
Why can you not buy replacement black hot pads when they look ugly? I have had many drip coffee makes from Braun, Black and Deck and Cuisinart over the years. They all brewed a great cup of coffee. Really it is hot water over grounds. None ever stopped brewing. They got ugly I have tried on and off over the years to purchase that easily replicable part. Why is it not sold?

Alarm Clock without Snooze
Brauns little desktop clock looks good, the alarm is a quiet beep that slowly gets louder and more frequent until you shut it off and it's easy to set and easy to tell if it is set, it's battery powered. Snooze is on top, you turn the alarm off by sliding down the switch on the side. It has an analog second hand but they aren't lying about it being quiet, is inaudible to me unless the clock is three inches away from my ear. Battery powered.

Wow! Great find. Wash it carefully, as the plastic tends to be easily scratched. I generally don't put the plastic components in the dishwasher. Also, handle carefully, as chips tend to initiate cracks. I have a vintage Braun food processor which has served me for over 30 years, and I'm sure will outlast me.

Good Immersion blenders?
I’ve been using the Braun MultiQuick 7 for a while, and it’s been great. It has a really powerful motor, so it makes quick work of soups and sauces, and it's easy to clean since it’s all detachable. It also has a pretty solid design, so I’m not worried about it breaking anytime soon. It feels sturdy, and the speed settings make it versatile enough for different types of food prep.

I have a Bialetti 3 cup moka pot that I love for stovetop espresso drinks. If you like coffee as a hobby, it’s a nice little brew method to have. The smoothest/ best brew method I have is a percolator of unknown brand that I inherited from my great-grandma. I highly recommend one as the only way for it to fail is user error damaging the components. It also gives you great control over how strong your brew is and imo tastes noticeably smoother than drip coffee. I’ve only had it for a few years, but for drip coffee, my Braaun machine (would have to check Amazon history for the model) was around $120 and has all the features I want and need and brews a good coffee. Two brew strengths, can brew multiple pot sizes, auto-on, warming plate timer up to 5 hours.

Braun brewsense. No touch screen, not the 14 cup from Costco. Best coffee maker I've ever owned. 3 years and strong on this one. Also makes great coffee, can be set to come on automatically, and the "bold" seeing let's you use about half as much grounds! I'm on my second one, but that's no fault of the coffee maker. (Generator decided to murder it)

What did you buy not realizing you bought it for life?
I have a Braun epilator that is 26 years old, it still looks good and works well. We also have our first Weber gas grill with the extra side burner (even though we have a Weber charcoal and another newer gas Weber now too, which we got thinking we'd replace the old one, but we couldn't justify it) that is about 22 years old. Several parts have been replaced and it's rusty, but it still works. I have a 29 yr old Patagonia rain jacket (the kind that you could turn inside out into it's own zipper pouch for storage). It still looks great (teal green which has come back into style again.

Time to upgrade toaster from a 60+ year old GE to a new Cuisinart. The GE still works it's just getting a bit flaky, needs a new spring and where do you get parts for a 60+ year old toaster? BUT I'll keep the GE for when the Cuisinart dies and will find a spring.
So many modern slice toasters are junk. Quality has definitely gone down in exchange for rapid assembly. I have a Braun HT600 toaster that I love. It's single slot. It looks like those robot carriers from the movie "I, Robot." A good friend of mine has a Kitchen Aid toaster--2 slots, with extended size. That thing is going on 15 years now.

They’re powerful enough for tough jobs and come with a bunch of attachments, but they’re on the pricier side. KitchenAid is great if you’re mostly doing lighter tasks like soups or dressings. It’s not as powerful as Braun but it’s reliable and looks nice if that matters Mueller Immersion Blender is a good middle ground—affordable but still sturdy. It’s got multiple speeds and the turbo mode is surprisingly strong. Works well for hot soups or even thicker stuff like hummus Whatever you go with, make sure it has a stainless-steel blending arm (plastic ones can crack over time) and detachable parts for easy cleaning. I’d personally recommend Mueller. It’s reliable and doesn’t cost as much as Braun, but still feels sturdy enough to last. Perfect if you want something versatile without breaking the bank.
