Briggs & Riley, hands-down. Pelican are great, but heavy and not flexible. Sometimes you need to squish your case into an overhead bin and Pelican don't squish. My brother was a McKinsey consultant for a few years before I started travelling frequently and I asked his advice.. he said B&R are expensive, but will last 20 years with an exceptional warranty. He was doing 100 flights/year, no checked baggage at the time. I bought in, I've been travelling frequently for 10 years minus covid, never checked a bag, about 65 flights a year on average, 15% to the EU, the rest in N.A. B&R do not have the stylish looks of TUMI, they're workhorses. I've never been denied this carry-on due to size, and because I have status (as you surely would) I board early and always find space for my bag in the overhead, I can pack a week's worth of clothing and gear into the suitcase including a set of running shoes, suit jacket, second pair of jeans, shaving kit etc. I love the 4 wheel models, but I bought a 2 wheel because it has fewer moving parts to fail. This is one of the most BIFL products I own. it cost me $500.. that's $50 a year, and if it keeps up it'll be $25 a year by the time I retire it. At 65 flights a year that's $0.38 per flight. I do have an airtag mounted inside as there have been a couple times I've arrived late and had to gate check. Good Luck!

Are you mostly a domestic or international traveler? Do you need/want a secondary compartment for suits/shirts/dresses? Do you like flat packing or do you care? Expandable or not? What else do you travel with as a personal item (backpack/purse/briefcase)? I’ve had my original Briggs and Riley international carry-on for 15 years now. It has seen millions of miles and over 70 countries. It has been to jungles in SE Asia, safari in Africa, quaint European cities, tons of tropical islands, etc. I’ve had it serviced once in all of that time (just this last year) when I finally got around to having one of the interior screws replaced alongside 2 missing zipper handles. I also have the medium sized B&R which is awesome because the carry on fits inside. So I can go somewhere I know I’m going to shop (I once brought home 50+ lbs of LEGO from Germany in that bag), check the medium size and roll the carry-on to the plane. My mother was an o&g executive and traveled extensively and always swears by her travel pro. Beyond brand, make sure the bag has the features that you will use most (size/shape, expansion, suited, outside handles or inside handles, spinner or 2 wheels).

If you can get access, it makes it a much easier pill to swallow, saved me $300 when you include what tax would have cost. They have annual sales on B&R on the exchange site. I’ll buy a new piece each year until I’m fully stocked.

TravelPro, if not this then Briggs and Riley. Osprey backpacks work pretty well, the Dayk Lite 26+6. Tumi was my bag of choice for the better part if a decade but really went downhill when they went Nylon and dumped the lifetime warranty. For two decades I flew every Sunday Wednesday and Friday mostly US Air. It was TUMI then. I'm a casual now, maybe 10 flights a year. My BnR Garment bag looks brand new after 5 years. I swapped out my Osprey for the BnR XL backpack 3 years ago with similar results. Osprey was starting to fray at the seams and straps but man it held its own.

Flight attendant here. I’ve been through Travelpro, Luggageworks, Tumi, and now Briggs & Riley. B&R’s quality & their warranty blows all of them out of the water. Travelpro isn’t what it used to be, Tumi is even worse, and LW is a bit awkward for the everyday passenger. I bought 3 B&R bags - a rollaboard & accompanying tote, and then a “weekender” type bag on wheels for when I do 1-day trips. They all look as new as they were the first day that I got them.. sure, a bit pricey up front, but i’ll never have to buy another bag in my career.

This is the answer. I spent hours and hours on Reddit, forums, and talking to travel people. Briggs & Riley was the common answer. I’ve since bought two (one carry on, one checked) for myself and one as a gift. My carry-on is still a baby at around 100k miles in a couple years but it still works great and barely shows any signs of wear despite sometimes being checked. B&R is also one of the only companies that their warranty also covers outside damage, not just defects.

I've been running my B&R daily including weekends since 2014. Two laptops and a shitton of stuff. The handle is worn out but the bag is incredible, worth every penny. These bags are very well built I don't see what handle would not wear unless it's an ugly plastic cylinder some brands put on the handles.

I'll chime in to defend B&R. I have a few of their bags and some are very old and very well used. All have held up great. My oldest bag lost a wheel in Glasgow earlier this year and Briggs immediately sent me a set of four wheels and instructions on how to replace them for free (they sent me four because their wheel design had changed over the years and they wanted them all to match) I bought a new one to replace a dead samsonite recently and quality looks to be the same as my old ones.

I bought two samsonites for 100 each, and both had a wheel break off. I was traveling a ton for work, after seeing 200 go to waste I decided to buy a better brand. I googled and saw Briggs and Riley was recommended. I bought a Hardshell large and carry on via prime day open box - paid 500 total for both. They have held up exceptionally well to 8 years of consistent international travel. My large bag shell cracked and the top handle disintegrated - they repaired it without issue. When the top handle on my carry on fell apart, they sent me a new one as well. I’ve had a great experience, but I recognize that experiences may vary.

Luggage recommendations
I skipped the spinners and got the regular roller bag. I got a Briggs and Riley and it's the bomb. Only time spinners are worth it is for the xl bags that you only check, just because they weigh so much. For carry on they are not ideal.

OP, look up Briggs & Riley. It isn’t cheap, but is literally “buy it for life” with a rock solid warranty. TSA cuts your bag open with a knife? They’ll replace it. Airline ships it somewhere random? The nameplate inside the bag will get it shipped back to you. Briggs & Riley are incredible. I’ve had a luggage set and weekender duffel bag now for about 15yrs

Great question. A few answers - 1) Briggs and Riley carry-on. Got it in 2002 and the thing is bullet proof. Use it whenever I travel. Has a garment bag and can expand if needed. 2) Ariens snowblower. Bought it in 2000 and the thing is awesome. Still going strong 25 years later with regular maintenance. All steel not like the ones with a lot of plastic today. 3) Wustoff classic knife set. Got it as a Wedding gift in 1997. Still my wife’s favorite knives. 4) All-clad stainless steel set.ditto to #3. Love it.

I wouldn’t remotely consider anything other than Briggs & Riley. Their track record and lifetime warranty are unparalleled. If you have a Costco membership, Costco Next is the best place to buy one (and will even more than pay for the price difference if you need to pay one year of membership). We now have two Global 21” 2-Wheel Carry-on Duffels. It’s an absolute steal at $439. The ability to pick it up on all sides is great. The 2-wheel was a little adjustment for us but I wouldn’t go back given the extra space, maneuverability (great on cobblestone and such; also we broke/lopsided a 4-wheel Samsonite wheeling it on two wheels, which you aren’t technically supposed to do), ability to hook up to a backpack onto it, and much more. - We travel globally 3-4 times a year, as well as monthly trips domestically as Disney passholders.

They were the go-to for professional travelers (consultants, etc.) but now its B&R and LuggageWorks and (at a lower price point) Travelpro. You can see from the way they advertise that they've shifted to being more of a fashion brand. I would argue that Coach leather goods also decades ago were really high quality but then shifted focus to fashion.

Is Briggs and Riley still worth it?
More durable than any bag but not worth it? You get a bag that's very durable that in the case an issue happens you can send it for repair for free for life. On top of that the warranty is attached to the bag so the resale value is good if you want one with less wear. I frankly surprised on yoru comment considering you scored one for a steal of $35. I'd say personally there much more value in buying a used one over new one. $800 is pretty steep.

I have had victorinox (great warranty, heavy AF), B&R (solid bag, also heavy) and TravelPro roller boards. I like the TravelPro the best. I’ve just received a PeakDesign rollerboard though and I suspect this will be the keeper. Their bags and other camera and travel gear have greatly exceeded my (pretty high) expectations. I’m looking forward to putting a lot of miles on this.

I own both BR and TP. BR for check in and TP for carry on. BR is overbuilt and can take a beating several times over. Add the lifetime warranty, it’s worth the price. Carry ons don’t quite take the beating as check in but so get a fair share of mileage. TP platinum elite soft side for the longest warranty (I think the travel+ soft side gets it too).

I bought Briggs & Riley a few months ago. I was replacing a 15-year-old Columbia carry-on I bought at the last minute for maybe fifty bucks? It still works great, but it's looking pretty banged up. Plus I deserve nice things. My spouse was a TravelPro fan prior to the Briggs & Riley. The big factors are how do you treat it, and how do you pack. I knew \*immediately\* that the TravelPro was going to give me the same annoyances as the Columbia I was replacing. It's still a great carry-on, but the TravelPro wouldn't have worked as well for me.

Briggs & Riley is worth the money. I've had my set for 11 years and have only had to replace the wheels. Before that I was replacing numerous random brands like Hartmann, Muji, and TravelPro. All of them were noticeably inferior and easily torn apart during travel. The only other brand I would consider out of B&R is Victorinox in the $300 range.

My Samsonite got a catastrophic hole in the side after about 1 year of very light use. It’s why I just bought a Briggs and Riley. It was by far the lowest quality piece of luggage I’ve ever owned. I think there was a period where Samsonite meant quality but those days are behind us in my opinion.

Passport holder suggestions
I have a nice Links of London one with my football teams emblem embossed in the leather (a gift from someone who works at the club meant for players😂) I love it …but they really are the most pointless things- passport control HATE them and refuse to look at the passport until I’ve removed it. They won’t even touch the leather to pass it back haha Passports are tough and don’t need protection but if you do have more than one passport and other documents you want to keep together then Tumi, Briggs & Riley or Victorinox are all good.

Which items are most needed to be BIFL but currently aren't?
I want to challenge your comment about fewer and fewer sales. If you have a high quality product, and are known to produce said product at a high quality, you can expand and update. A great example of this (IMO) is Briggs & Riley luggage. Extremely high quality, often one of the top recommended brands in this sub. They add new models/features/colors. There will always be people that want the latest and greatest version of something. Or someone that wants luggage (or whatever your product is) that’s brand new and doesn’t have any wear/tear. An example (though not really 1:1) of this is that loads of people trade in their 1-3 year old vehicle for a new one. Often there is nothing notably wrong with their car, they just want a new one/new features/etc.

I've used the B&R warranty twice. I have a repair center near my house, and have dropped off bags for wonky wheels (replaced in 10 days) and handle that wouldn't lock in the middle position (replaced in a week). No proof of purchase needed, as advertised, the bag has the s/n printed on it.

Samsonite or TravelPro Suitcase
After my Samsonite hard shell of 11 years finally cracked, I almost bought it again because it served me so well. I’d get it again if I were choosing between the two brands. However, I purchased a like-new (but used) Briggs and Riley Medium Baseline Spinner for $225 on eBay and it is incredible. Lifetime no-hassle warranty that transfers with the bag. The only company that will repair airline-damaged bags to my knowledge. Something to consider in a world of cheaper quality and weaker warranties.

I ended up with the TravelPro Flight Crew Carry-On and I love it. I really wanted to splurge on the Briggs & Riley bag at the time but it was hard when the TravelPro bag looked pretty competitive at a great price and with a great warranty as well. The one thing you are really missing out on from the Briggs & Riley bag is their compression system and the fact the poles are located on the outer case of the bag making the inside a perfect cube. Although I usually just line those sections with socks and underwear so it ends up being flat anyway 😅

Have yet to wear anything of theirs out and I've had some of their stuff for 20 years and its been used and abused. I just replaced a Columbia Sportswear carry-on I bought in 2010 for <$50 at a Tuesday Morning. Still functions perfectly just needs a deep clean. I got really lucky. Given that I prioritize taking care of my things so they take care of me, I bought a Briggs and Riley. If it lasts 15 years the upfront cost is negligible. Buy once, cry once. All that said, every piece of hardshell luggage we’ve used has looked like shit after one trip. I’m fully team soft luggage.

Briggs and Riley ZDX Luggage
If you can look at them in a store, it definitely helped me. I went to the store looking to buy the ZDX. It's a great carry-on, far better than the old beaten one I currently use. However, two things made me choose the Baseline: 1. The front pocket on the ZDX seemed like a convenient feature for easy access, especially when moving through airport security. Unfortunately, since it doesn't zip, I worry that it will catch on things and eventually rip or get blown out. 2. The ratcheting compression on the Baseline is really great. No more trying to smash down the overstuffed top while yanking a zipper around 75% of the case.

Briggs and Riley luggage. Specifically the baseline series. Almost two million air miles and counting and countless journeys. Still looks and functions like new. Falcon Northwest custom computers. Build quality is top notch and has only gotten better with their improves of their cases, more specially the Talon. You’ll pay for the quality, but it’s worth it.

I travel a lot for work and bought the B and R international 21”. There is a lifetime warranty. The thing about soft luggage is that it expands and you can stuff things in the zippered outer compartments. You can’t do that with hard shell. Also, 21” is good if you travel internationally, as the standard luggage in the USA is too large for most airlines.

Away shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same sentence as B&R. B&R has been around long enough to trust that you’ll actually be able to get a “lifetime” warranty replacement from them in a few years. By comparison Away is still a flash in the pan. Personally I prefer standard wheels and soft sided luggage. It’s the most durable and most interior space typically. If rodents are an issue I’d look at repellants or an exterminator.

What is a BIFL item/product you recommend?
I have a Briggs & Riley soft briefcase from 1992, no lie, bought for my first "real" job. It's 1000 dernier ballistic cloth and it will NEVER wear out. It was super expensive at the time (maybe $200?), but damn if it isn't something I'm going to take to my grave. Aeron chair if you can afford to recondition somehow, IME the hydraulics give out. If you're gentle on it and don't futz with adjustment too much, maybe it's BIFL. Would add: Viberg boots. Buy once, cry once. I spent $750 10 years ago on a pair of service boots and only now are the soles starting to wear. The uppers are still bullet proof. Can say the same about Russell Moccasins. In general any "artisanal" men's workwear/heritage brand (so long as made in USA/Japan/UK) is worth the steep buy-in so long as your tastes don't change. Luckily I've been wearing the same style clothing since I was 12. Le Creuset Dutch oven. Got it as a wedding gift 23 years ago, have cooked with it 4x a week since. RevereWare, will co-sign that. Inherited a few from my mother easily 60 years old now. Also All-Clad. You can't wear these out; It's impossible. Most Patagonia gear: It has a lifetime warranty, and they're happy to repair it for you. Their fleeces are pretty indestructible and won't pill (they do stretch a bit at the seams but only after a decade or so. Tools: Basically any plug-in power tool made before, say, 1995 is good to go. Just look for heavy metal cases at garage sales Things like old drill presses and bench grinders also will last forever. Miele appliances: Expensive, but easily worth it. We paid something like 3000 for a w/d set in the late 1990s and they were still going strong in 2018 when we sold that home. Zero maintenance (and was a plus for resale value). In fact I think we more than broke even; since then we've had the usual brands (Samsung etc) and they crap out at about 8 years.

What is a BIFL item/product you recommend?
I have the briggs and Riley Baseline carryon, medium roller (getting the Large/XL means you will be over the 50lb domestic (US) weight limit), and a cabin 2-wheel underseat roller. Great bags, although the wife wanted Away (seem nice so far, but not my preference). Tom Bihn backpacks. Took a week long trip to the tropics and the bag is a little unorthodox but it can hold a lot of stuff. And you have a variety of fabrics to select. Bose over hear headphones - great for travel and mine have lasted for awhile. For life is somewhat limited but its an electronic item that has a little tech, its a tradeoff. Sonicare toothbrush - It is like 10 years old on the original battery. Teeth are life. Agree with the Leatherman Wave+, good tool doesn't really excel at any one thing, but useful to have. Cookware: DeBuyer carbon steel country fry pan. I prefer this over cast iron. Demeyere Atlantis Fry pan - great steel fry pan. Allclad copper core (functionally similar to the d3 but I like the appearance of the copper line that shows through and I don't worry about cleaning it). I have watches. Mechanical ones are nice but as the old joke goes if you have to pick a watch to wear for the rest of your life what would you choose and no you can't choose your g-shock. NiMH batteries - where possible get rid of alkaline even if they are cheaper. They will leak and ruin your day and maybe even the device they are in. I choose Eneloops, the normal not the pro variant. Skip the LION batteries for now as they are 3.7v and require a voltage regulator to go to 1.5v, but if you need the 1.5v instead of 1.2v for the device meaning the NiMH won't work then the normal 1.6v lithium batteries would work. High quality LED lights - CRI should be 90+. They are a long term consumable but higher quality light is better. Knipex and Klein for tools. Knipex makes my favorite generalist pliers/wrenches. Klien makes great hand tools, I prefer the MiUSA options and use their linesmans for random things. Klien also makes a bottle opener, Wera does too and they are somewhat comfortable to hold. Clothes that don't have spandex. Spandex and elastic fail. I have had Patagonia fleece for 30 years and it still works. Randolph sunglasses - I just like them. Ray Ban 4140, they have spring hinges which means I can wear my spouse's and they have had theirs for 15 years although I had to buy new aftermarket lenses. Also discovered a french brand Cartel that also uses spring hinges, but don't know enough about this brand. Miele Washer and Dryer - gets rid of the vent ducting behind and they are solid if a little quirky. They canister vacuum is great. Converted the in-laws to this brand and they just went from the upright to the canister.

I’ve got a Tom Bihn side kick bag for sale 😂 definitely bifl just don’t buy too many like me…not sure if it will be bifl but I use my aeropress daily and have for the past few years and it’s in great shape, they make a glass/metal version now and that’s probably what I will get if mine was to break. My Briggs Riley suitcase has a lifetime warranty and I have been very impressed with it so far, I have the two wheeled cabin bag and use Thule compression cubes that are very sturdy and might be as close to bifl as you can get for compression cubes.

They have a great lifetime warranty and I’ve had things fixed for free in 30 mins and the only info they wanted was a serial number, name and phone number. A bit pricy but even places like Market place have good options for cheaper. Warranty is transferable.

samsonite luggage bifl? other suitcase recs that are cute, light and durable?
Airline Pilot here: I daily a luggage works stealth. Heavy, ugly, but easy to repair/ get parts. I parkour it on and off curbs all the time with no hesitation. The wheels come off easy for replacement/ clean out all the gunk. About once a year I do that and tighten every fastener I can find. 3 years of work use. Broken 1 zipper and 1 snap on the strap that holds the handle in the stowed position. If I wasn’t flight crew or was a little gentler on my stuff I’d 100% get Briggs and Riley. If that wasn’t in the budget I’d get a crew model from travel pro.

Yes, if you contact them, they should send you a replacement, but honestly, this has happened to me, and when it's fixed, it's only a matter of time before it happens again... buy Briggs & Riley, they have a lifetime warranty.

What are your thoughts about Filson bags?
I don’t know anything about Filson, but Briggs & Riley is widely considered the gold standard for luggage and it has a lifetime warranty. I own a few and love them.

Yeah I had considered that. They came today and I’m 99.9 percent sure they’re real. The big suitcase came in a Briggs and Riley box that was shipped from Briggs and Riley to Amazon (the shipping label was still on it.) They both have s/n’s as well. I also made sure they were both sold and shipped from Amazon. Definitely not a full proof system, but these seem legit. I’m a bit more leery of third party sellers.
