  Personally I only like waterproof shoes if I’m going to be in wet+cold; otherwise, they get too warm and feet sweat and then inside is swampy wet even if it’s not raining. I have a pair of Merrel Nova 4 Waterproof I bought for an Alaskan cruise that I like a lot. Brooks are my daily shoes and their WP versions are good.

  Of course no shoes are going to last a lifetime but I’m trying to build a pretty good collection (are made in Japan converse worth it?)

  I never understood the appeal of converse. They are thinly built, offer no cushion or support, and to me... Look like shoes I'd see on kids in their teens (no offense OP). I'd pick up some Arcteryx shoes for trail, climbing and something like Brooks Glycerins for city walking. Anything else would be in the business/dress up category and wouldn't be something to ask me about.

  Looking for extra wide HOKA shoes

  It’s been a while since I’ve had Saucony’s, just remember them being one of the most cushiony running shoe options before Hoka’s entered the scene. Now every company has their Hoka copycat I guess. Looks like Saucony has the Men’s Echelon 10 Extra Wide, but your color options are limited to black/ gray. But looking at Brooks’ website, I would use their shoe finder to find something that meets your criteria. I have only bought Brooks for awhile now and the latest pair I have (Ghost 3 I think) is extremely cushiony. Not sure if that would be the best pair for you or not considering my feet are pretty narrow, but they have loads of options.

  Brooks addiction walker. Go and get fitted though. Some 2e are narrow , you may need a 4e  They will hold up And last for years. You can also get replacement insoles for around 60 . The shoes themselves are 130.

Generally the best for running comfort and ergonomics will only last a certain number of miles before you need to replace them.   Dude shoes are consumable, and especially running shoes. Your knees are too. This is not a buyitforlife item. HOKAS in particular tend to wear very fast. Brooks less so. I would suggest the most buy it for life thing would be the shoe best for your feet, knees, and back.

The real answer is to go to a running store and try out a variety. Just remember that they are sales people. Brooks, ASICS, Saucony are very well known brands in the world and are a good place to start. I personally wear Brooks Ghost 14s.

  I wear Brooks. Have Adrenaline GTS, Ghost and Hyperion (level of support from most to least). I enjoy wearing the Hyperions the most because they feel weightless but they're not supportive and meant for speed training. I run indoors for what it's worth. Haven't tried the Glycerin but they are popular and a new one just dropped (Glycerin max 2 I believe). Nice thing about running shoes is you're supposed to replace them after a while so no need to BIFL.

  Honestly those are all solid choices. I'd lean toward the Hoka Clifton over the Bondi - the Bondi can feel a bit too cushy for all-day wear, like you're walking on marshmallows. The Clifton hits that sweet spot of cushion without feeling unstable. Brooks Ghost is also a safe bet if you want something more traditional. And yeah don't sweat the sizing thing - tons of dudes rock women's shoes for the better fit, especially with smaller feet. That said, the leather boot comment above has some merit if you're just standing in one spot all day. But if you're actually walking around a lot, I'd stick with the running shoes.   Since you're planning on traveling in the near future, I'd suggest getting a good pair of walking / running shoes (Hoka, New Balance, Brooks, etc). They won't be BIFL, but they will definitely come in handy at some point in the future regardless of what state your current shoes are in.

  Standing for 10 hours with bunions is brutal, I dealt with similar foot pain for years before discovering IAMBIC (custom dress shoes made from foot scans). For your situation though, you'll want to focus on brands that specifically design for wider fits and all-day comfort. New Balance has some excellent work shoes in their Fresh Foam line that come in multiple width options, and they're built to handle long shifts. Hoka also makes incredibly cushioned shoes that tend to run roomier in the toe box which helps with bunion pressure. Brooks and ASICS both offer wide width options in their walking/work shoe lines too. The key is finding something with a deep toe box and good arch support since you'll be on concrete all day. Just make sure whatever you get has removable insoles so you can add custom orthotics if needed down the road.

  Hokas or brooks ghost have helped my heel/foot pain. You can find them cheaper and only slightly used on poshmark for a good price..hokas are usually fugly looking but IMO helped tremendously with the heel pain.

  I’d say Brooks Glycerin 22 or up if you like a real cushioned and floaty step, Brooks Beast 22 or up if you like the idea of the Glycerin but need a more solid step. The Beasts are hard to find in stores, but very worth trying if you feel like the Glycerin is too cushy. The adrenaline is a nice shoe but I prefer more of the stabilizing facets of the Beast.   If you're not putting serious miles on them, a lot of Asics models provide plenty of cushion without bilk and are comfortable for long days (my preference for work shoes as a nurse on my feet for 12-13 hours at a time) but if you're walking serious mileage, you'll want more cushion such as the Hoka Clifton or the Brooks Glycerin, based on my personal experience. I trained and ran many races in Hokas believing that distance running meant I was forced to have blisters no matter what, but I haven't had any since I started running in Brooks Glycerins. Working/ standing in the Hokas was much more comfortable and I'd walk or stand in those all day over the Glycerin, but if I'm running, it is gonna be in Brooks.

  No running shoes will be BIFL, you already nailed that. I run more than most people and am going on my third pair of running shoes for the year, which is nothing compared to really dedicated runners. Once you start hitting 300ish miles on running shoes, they degrade pretty quickly. I'm a nurse too, so my work shoes get considerable mileage, but more significantly time. I can run for hours but standing in one place for more than 5 or 10 minutes is arguably more taxing from a fatigue point of view. I love Hokas but they gave me blisters. They were great for work shoes but by the point I retired them the soles were worn out. Now, I like Asics for my work shoes and have been on Brooks for a couple generations for my running shoes. A local, independent running shop owner spent an hour going over the differences and had cut cross sections of all the popular running shoes and explained why certain ones would be better for me/ why they were better in general. All I know is now I can run all of my training without blisters and in comfort. It sounds like Fleet Feet is kind of a boutique chain of similar shops. It really doesn't matter in the end, if you get shoes that fit and feel good. Brooks has a great return policy too - I bought Ghosts and they did not fit me well. I returned them with no issues and ended up in a different line altogether but from them. Doesn't hurt that they offer 25% off for some professions. Worth trying out with their great return policy.

  Running shoes, or trail runners, that actually fit YOUR feet are the correct and best answer.  No they do not last forever. Yes you will be replacing them regularly.  That’s because they are a precisely engineered mix of foams and glues. That’s why they work so much better than the infinitely repairable leather shoes.  Looks at what every nurse wears (Hoka, Brooks, Altra, & On). Each brand has a different cut and philosophy of the foot as well as different fabric blends and lacing.  For me Altra’s wide toe box and zero drop design (even on their foamed up shoes like the Olympus) are the best choice. Others prefer Brooks and Hoka. Tbh I thing On is a little trendy and they often have so much heal they hurt. But your mileage will vary.  With all of them plan to replace them every 300-500miles. Most nurses are getting 6 months to a pair of shoes. A small price to pay for improved foot and back health in my book.

  Only footwear that's buy it for life are leather goodyear welt shoes which can be repaired. If you can handle those then great. But what I believe you're really looking for is a running shoe. Try all the popular brands with their high-end soft sole material. Like Adidas ultra boost material, whatever brooks puts in their Glycerin line of shoes, Nike with their zoomX material. Some budget options would be the Hoka Clifton. Consider 'stack height', consider heel-to-toe-drop and consider toe box width. Those are major factors specific to each individual. For hiking I use trail runners, Hoka speedgoat. For running I've been using brooks glycerin. For walking around town I have a bunch of Adidas ultra boost 1.0s. All of which I bought at massive discounts at a dicks warehouse. Check out dicks warehouse or Sierra trading post to get high quality name brand shit for actually significant sales.

  Shoes are such a personal thing. Some makers run narrow, which might be good if you have narrow feet, or bad if you have wide feet. Some shoes have higher arches than others. What’s comfortable for you isn’t necessarily what is comfortable for someone else. Focus on high quality brands and try on different ones until you find a brand that fits your feet. Don’t worry about whether it’s a walking, running or basketball shoe. Personally, I wear Brooks running shoes for walking, hiking, playing pickleball etc.

  I anticipate getting shat on by Reddit for this comment, but I recommend going to Fleet Feet or another store targeting serious runners. They scanned my feet, identified shoes that would be a good match for my foot shape and arch, and provided me a list to try. I bought Brooks and they were the most comfortable shoes I've had for walking. Is it a gimmick? Maybe. Hell, probably. But they got my mother in law into shoes that she can actually walk in comfortably for a decent distance, and my wife and I have both left satisfied.

  Just bought sneakers

  No athletic shoes that you use on a regular basis should last for years. The support will wear out. The tread will wear off, and the soles will have uneven wear for many people. They are meant to be replaced regularly with the higher end shoes recommending replacement more often than lower end shoes because the wearer expects more performance from them. Replacement is usually recommended after a number of miles, not an amount of time. I wear Brooks Ghost. They recommend replacement at 300 - 500 miles, but I only replace mine once a year which is about 1,000 miles for me.

  Having trouble finding quality sneakers

  I recently bought my first pair of Brooks from one of those shoe stores that measure your foot width , gait, and all that jazz. Previously, I only wore chucks or doc martens. But I'm never going back after wearing these for a couple months! Check em out. There's a few other brands they presented, but Brooks is what I ended up going with and I don't regret it at all.

  Try brooks adrenaline gts or asics gel kayano shoes. Goto a local running shoe store (like roadrunners) to get em fitted with right width and size. My sore knee pain disappeared after trying this. This shoes last a long time, especially if you don’t run on gravel a lot.

  Looking for durable mens shoes

  Sneakers are really only good for 4-500 miles. Depending on factors, I’m super cheap, so I typically wear them until the bottom tread starts to go. I like Hoka’s, (wearing those now) and my last pair was Brooks. I worked on a political campaign last year and was canvassing neighbourhoods everyday, from June through the last week of October. My Brooks held up quite well. But the tread was almost completely gone by the end.

  Looking for durable mens shoes

  For daily wear a sneaker is just going to wear out. I walk a lot on city sidewalks, and the most durable daily driver soles I've found are Adidas Continental rubber soles and Brooks. But even those getting 5-6 months of 12,000+ steps is about as much useful life as you're gonna get. If you want them to last longer, you'll have to buy multiple pairs and rotate. I'm not a fan of Birkenstocks personally (on looks alone, I have no idea how they feel), but AIUI a good cobbler can resole and restore them.

  Best wide shoes for heavy folks (8+ hours standing)

  This is actually something I’m an ‘expert’ on just from so much personal experience. As long distance runner and former infantryman who has tried damn near every shoe, boot, insole, and sock you could imagine, (I’ve literally spent thousands on this) and also dealt with just about every common foot issue you can imagine, I’ve come to learn that everyone has different shoe/sock/boot preferences which they swear by, because everyone’s feet are sooo different.This is because there are so many different parts of foot which that make them unique - supination/pronation, toe length and really the geometry of every bone in your foot varies from person to person, foot width, fat padding depth, etc etc. I could give a whole spiel on all of the factors from everything I’ve learned, but the key takeaway from this bit is that there is TONS of variation. I’m saying all of this to give support to this recommendation: TLDR: Go to a running shoe store such as Fleet Feet and try on as many shoes the worker helping you there will bring out for you. You don’t need to be a runner to get good shoes from those places, they will have tons of options well suited for walking as well. Most of those running shoe stores will do some type of measurement/analysis on your feet and your gait to help you find a good match. Tbh those analysis are probably 50% snake oil gimmicks, but it does work. I would also recommend getting custom insoles from them as well. Don’t feel pressured into buying it then and there, you can go to other stores and try on shoes there as well if nothing there is suiting you. The most important thing is finding a shoe that works well for you. The other really important thing to prevent foot pain is the physical therapy side of things. You can do simple, easy exercises sitting/standing still that will help you tremendously. Look up “Squat University” on YouTube and search for his foot related vids, he’s a physical therapist who gives amazing insight, PT exercises and how to do them, and is easy to understand as a layman. He talks a lot about regaining toe splay which is super important for foot function, and unfortunately the vast majority of people have lost due to the fact that almost all shoes have way too narrow of a toe box. The analogy is that we have been doing something akin to Chinese foot binding for our entire lives by using these modern shoe designs and have thus wrecked our foot physiology. Just to touch on my experience with some of the brands I’ve seen mentioned in the comments or that I have experience with worth mentioning: Hoka: definitely the softest feeling sole I’ve run in. However, and you may not experience this only walking, but it wore down quickly and also felt like it lost its ‘bounce’ relatively quickly; within 300 miles or so. It felt a bit like running on sand after that point. Wasn’t a huge fan tbh, but again, they might suit you perfectly, it’s impossible for me to say either way. Brooks: good feeling shoes that gives a lot of stability and support to your entire foot. Some would argue that this can be worse for you in the long run since your feet start to conform to and thus rely on the support/structure provided by the shoe, instead of allowing your feet to build the muscles and shape to function properly. Merrells: the ones I’ve used have been relatively comfy for me, but very narrow, especially in the toe box. Wouldn’t recommend them if you are looking for something wider. Altra: Not sure if anyone has called out altra yet, but these are marketed as having a very wide toe box, which they do. I have a pair of their hiking shoes and boots, and the boots are my favorite I’ve ever owned for when I want something light weight. As far as boots go (just in case you were looking for boots as well) Danner: the ones I’ve used have a nice wide toe box, a flat and thin sole, and very little support. However, I find them super comfy, almost like wearing moccasins, where it feels like there’s nothing on your feet because they have so much freedom of movement, if that makes sense. I actually ended up doing most of SFAS in these (which I would NOT recommend due to them not having a lot of sole padding/thickness) due to my other boots tearing, but I survived. Garmont: the ‘NFS’ model were the go-to uniform compliant boots for almost everyone for a while especially for things like rucking. I’ve noticed a lot of the combat arms type folks using a different new boot now though, but can’t remember what they are at the moment. Lowa: my favorite heavier duty boot for doing things that benefit from having a thick sole and a lot of support. They are very comfortable for me. However, they are relatively narrow and have a narrow toe box though, I have a narrow foot and I wear the wide versions.   I have wide feet and high arches. I wear New Balance 880 v15 (wide) with Currex Run Pro inserts . I wear these for running/walking, but that combo would also work for standing. The best wide fit shoes imo are New Balance, Brooks, ASICS, Hoka and Karhu. You should really try a bunch on because fit varies so much. I go to a place called Fleet Feet and they do a scan of your feet and use that as a starting point. I highly suggest doing this. Just google "running shoe store" and I'm sure you can find a similar shop in your area.

One other thing you might try: when I need to stand so day in concrete or just on my feet well day, I reach for lowa renegades. Softer soles ankle length hiking boot. Unreal support and comfort

You don’t even have to buy the shoes there. Get a feel for what works and what you need. Sometimes you need to.5-1 size bigger.

  Recommended Shoes for All Day Wear

  Sounds like you could be dealing with heel spurs or plantar fasciitis. Sorbothane makes inserts and heel pads that helped me a lot when I battled plantar fasciitis. ASICS gel kayano is pretty cushy too. Haven't tried any of their other models. I eventually settled on Brooks (Adrenaline GTS, Addiction, Glycerin GTS) and I live in them now. Had to wear them for a while before the pain totally went away.

  Best alternative to the Brooks Ghost 13?

  My coworker loves his On Clouds. I love my Brooks Ghost 16s, sorry you aren't having the same experience. I've had to warranty my Hoka Transport's twice after 2 months of wear due to the tread separating from the shoe. Which is sad since it looks like they just glue the tread on. So ymmv but I won't be buying Hoka's after 2 pair have had the same issue after a short period of time.

  Non-popular sneakers which will last at least couple of years

  Saucony, Brooks, Mizuno, Mammut, Innov8, Salewa, Scarpa, Sportiva, Lowa. All of those have a particular reputation for longevity and general quality. Bear in mind it may depend on the particular purpose, for instance more specialist/high performance models of those brands may be comparatively short lived, i.e. shoes that are intended to help you win a race at all costs. :)  But in truth the BIFL answer is to buy cheap when sales come around. Combine with the above, there's your answer. Shoes don't live forever, it's about making your money go further.

  Best alternative to the Brooks Ghost 13?

  Weird story but brooks ghost 13s are the only shoes I’ve got close to running 1000kms in before they packed up. I liked Sauconys but they gave up too quick. Your feet will be very unique so I wouldn’t settle for any old shoe if you plan on running a lot. Check out runrepeat for user reviews but, if you can, try find a specialist running store that’ll do a gait analysis and put you on a treadmill to determine the best category of shoe for you before committing to a shoe.

  I’m going to co-sign the Brooks shoes. In particular, the Brooks Adrenaline model, which comes in wide. Sturdy, lightweight, and didn’t give me the occasional Achilles and shin issues that my Hokas did. Other tip: if you have a Fleet Feet store anywhere near you, they can do a 3D measure your feet and recommend shoes based on your particular anatomy / walking style. Totally free, last I checked, and you may find some other brands worth checking out too.

  I found Hokas wear out faster than other brands, especially the foam. I switched to Saucony which was great but then they changed the model so now I'm on Brooks. The Brooks is definitely the roomiest of the three in a wide.

  As someone who used to have flat feet, your feet probably aren't dysfunctional, just weak. Switching to barefoot-style shoes with thin, flexible soles and a wide toe box will strengthen them. If you don't want to go down that rabbit hole, brooks brand shoes served me well. Had good arch support.

  How do I repair this part of the shoe? I know I could buy a new pair but why when the rest of the shoe is in great condition?

  I bought a $130 pair of Brooks for running and the padding completely shifted out of the heel after using them a few times. They’ve been nearly unusable ever since even just for walking because of the plastic tearing my heel off. I tried moleskin once but I’ll try it again in combination with the shoe goo.

  Has anyone tried the Good Feet Store insoles?

  We had no clue how much it might be prior to going to the store. I thought we would be looking at shoes, not solely (pun intended) for arch supports. My wife had her feet measured then they took an ink print of each foot to evaluate the arches. Then she did the test walk around the store with each of the 3 types of arches: strengtheners, maintainers, and relaxers. They put them in a brand new pair of Brooks sneakers/tennis shoes/ running shoes (whatever they are called nowadays). SHE LOVED IT! \\When the sales person (who was indeed quite knowledgeable and not at all pushy) told us that they offered financing, including 12 months same as cash, I KNEW it was gonna be costly! The top package includes 3 sets of each pair of the supports, 2 pairs of compressions stockings, 1 single compression sock for night, a foot massager, and all future adjustments in the arches, if necessary, for a mere $2499.00. WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT!!!! And the awesome Brooks shoes she test drove were not included! Now, if a person has really sore feet and walks awkwardly, this would be a great investment! But she does not have foot pain, so we went to Famous Footwear and bought 2 pair of awesome shoes (not Brooks, which she loved) for $176. We SAVED OVER $2300!!! So, when a sales person says they FINANCE your purchase of arch supports for your shoes, you know it's absurdly ridiculous. Now I'm just gonna find her those Brooks shoes and some similar arch supports and call it a day! Best wishes and fond disregards!

  New shoes for every day walking and gym?

  I highly recommend looking for used weightlifting shoes on eBay or Poshmark. Can save a lot since people get them to lift, then stop going to the gym after 6 months. For your original question, I’ve been wearing Brooks Ghosts for awhile, but still need to get a new pair every year due to wear. Ultra makes wider toe boxes but I think their quality has gone down hill recently.

  Welcome! Yeah, screws in the foot don’t mix well with anything other than sooooffffffft and good support. Good luck! Also, if you do go to a running shoe store (like, actual running shoes, not just a bit of everything), they can let you try several brands. Hoka, On Cloud, Saucony, etc. works great for some folks, not me. Brooks Ghosts. But not Brooks Adrenaline. You get the idea. But yeah, that’s the route I’d go. [Here is and example.   I have mangled feet have had foot surgeries, and and have been in and out of custom orthotics for 30 years. Now, however, I started buying Powerstep inserts for $50 about every six months, and I wear Brooks ghosts. They are NOT BIFL. They wear out quickly, and I go through about 3 or 4 pairs a year. I had a running shoe guy fit me to find the Brooks years ago. He said, “If you need soft, you can’t get a shoe that lasts a long time. They’re like tires.” My podiatrist told me the same thing. I say go to a reputable running shoe store, find shoes that feel great on your feet right out of the gate, and plan on keeping multiple pairs, cycling through them every few months. My feet are tolerable with this method. Good luck!

  Best simple, not overly-engineered shoe for walking 12k steps/day?

  My podatrist recommends Brooks.

  My podiatrist recommends Brooks. Granted he also says you should replace any shoe after 3 months of wear.

  Brooks.  All of my staff wear them and they routinely do 10k-15k steps a day.  I wear them as well and have done 22k steps in a single day.

  Same here. Bought them for 14 days in Italy and France. Comfortable, yes; Fashionable, good enough; Long lasting. Not at all. My Asics and Brooks sneakers have far more miles and are in better shape. My Cole Haan fashion sneakers are slightly less comfortable but also have lasted longer.

  Depends 12k in flip flops or crocs for me would give me slight foot pain. If I do it in brooks or something decent I won’t feel anything.

  Brooks Ghost Max 2. I just moved from Nevada to Spain and am walking more than I ever have. I went from maybe 20 mins a day to 2 hours. No shoe or sneaker I’ve ever owned has come close to the comfort of these. They seem to magically propel you forward.

  I have some really effec-up feet, especially left foot/ankle, and must wear custom orthotics to function. I found some all-black (incl soles) Brooks running shoes that I happily wear with non-athletic, up-casual clothes. Being all black, at a glance they are as innoccuous as any black casual loafer or oxford. In these, I can casually walk all afternoon without spending the evening with my foot up and under an ice pack. In other shoes or boots (except certain hikers), I am limited to an hour or so before needing a rest, if I am to avoid a long recovery period. Caveat: If you wear orthotics with exposed hard plastic, they can be loudly squeaky - but there is a solution: Moleskine tape applied to the bottoms and edges of the orthotic, trimmed of excess with sharp scissors. Lightly sand and clean hard plastic with alcohol and lint-free cloth before applying Moleskine. I recommend 2" wide, continuous rolls.So far, my first application has lasted several weeks, though I understand that the tape needs to be replaced periodically. Works like a charm.

  Cloud on or new balance?

  Definitely New Balance over On Cloud. Another shoe to consider would be Brooks. A lot of nurses wear the Brooks Ghosts and Adrenalines because they hold up and are comfortable for lots of walking during long shifts. I do a lot of long distance running (so lots of miles and wear on my shoes), and the Brooks pairs have held up better than some of my other shoes.

  Cloud on or new balance?

  Shoes aren't bifl or even buy it for a long time. The foam compresses and shoes comfortable for walking have very thin rubber grips on the bottom (to maximize the foam for a comfy ride). For long walks in the park regularly, expect to replace the shoes at least every 2 years, possibly every 1 year. Also, if it's a daily shoe, you may want to consider two pairs - one good running/walking shoe and one good casual everyday. Because of the amount of foam in running/walking shoes, they wear a lot faster. A good sneaker would be better for your running errands and will allow your expensive running/walking shoes to last a lot longer. I would recommend New Balance over Cloud on. Also look at Brooks, Asics, and Hoka. If you can go to a shoe store that does fittings you can usually explain to them what your intent for the shoes are and they are usually good with suggesting the best shoe for your use case.
