brother printer DCP-B7640DW vs DCP-L2540DW
Both are good, BIFL-type Brother lasers. If it were me, I’d pick the DCP-B7640DW for slightly better wireless features and faster printing. The L2540DW is simpler and a bit cheaper to run, but the difference is small. Brother mono lasers work well with Mac M1 and iPhone and tend to last forever if you just need print, scan, copy. For toner, I’m in the UK and buy from amazon. I paid around £45 for a compatible toner, no issues and much cheaper than OEM.

if you want something that lasts, I’d look at a basic laser printer rather than inkjet. Fewer moving parts, no dried ink issues, and they don’t block printing because a colour cartridge is empty. Brands like Brother tend to get recommended a lot for simple print + copy needs. Running costs matter too. I’ve had better luck using compatible toner instead of brand-name stuff. If you’re in the UK, cartridgesave.co.uk has plenty of options depending on the printer brand, which helps keep costs down long term.

I had the same issues with HP inkjets - absolute nightmare. Got a Brother HL-L2350DW (no scanner tho) for like £100 and it's been brilliant. If you need scanning, look at the MFC series. Also pro tip: get your toner from cartridgesave.co.uk instead of paying HP/Brother prices. Saves a fortune.

Get a brother laser. Heck, check Facebook marketplace for them, you may just get one cheap. If you don’t need color, or need it infrequently, print color somewhere else and get a black and white for home. I have someone’s old one. It has to be 5-6 years old at least. Sometimes it goes to sleep and I have to go wake it up, but otherwise it has no problems. Name brand toner can be expensive, but I got some knock off stuff from Amazon. This will be great for printing lots of pages like scholarly articles. Are you scanning enough and require high quality/high volume to need a dedicated scanner? I need the occasional page or three, and don’t need super high quality most times. I can generally get away with using my phone, and if I need high quality or more than a few pages, I use the copier at work.

Maybe OP wants to occasionally print things requiring color? Now he needs a second color printer, an inkjet if he’s not doing color laser. Ink dries out and becomes useless if you’re not using it often, and if you are, why the hell did you buy another printer? Color laser checks all the boxes. Yeah, the toner for color can be pricey (mines a Xerox and a full OEM toner set costs about the same as the printer is, way more than brother. Even the third party stuff is expensive.) but it’s cheaper per page by a significant amount. Even moreso if you ever have an ink cartridge dry out because you don’t print with that color often.

Just adding more push toward Brother. Was a big HP person for many years, not anymore. They are awful now. Bought a brother laser a few years ago. its been problem free, and the toner lasts and lasts. The models change every few years but the DCPL2640DW gets good reviews. All-In-One B&W laser with duplex. Duplex is important to save paper. You can go color, but unless you have a need and are just printing text, stick with B&W. You can use off brand black toner on the cheap. And I want to point out one thing to those who say the toner is more expensive. With many manufacturers, this is true but there's a reason for that. One of the key factors that sets a good laser from the bad is if the toner cartridge is separate from the drum. Many newer, cheaper lasers.. the way the manufacturers recoup money is integrate the drum with the toner cartridge, so it is more expensive to make and buy. But in reality, you don't replace the drum as often as toner in lasers where the two are two separate user serviceable parts. However, drums are expensive. I think I replaced 2 drums in the 15 or so years I had my last printer vs the 10-15 or so toner cartridges in that time. But toner was $80, drum was $160 vs a similar HP where it was $130 for toner/drum combined cartridge. Yeah you may pay little bit more up front for a printer that supports separate drum and toner cartridges, but in the long run you'll save money. Anyways Brother is one of the few manufacturers who still offer this setup in some of their models. The DCPL2640DW is one. List High Yield Brother-branded Toner is 93, drum is 150. Amazon has them for a 1/4 of that for knock offs. Cheeeap. PS - ProTip: Figure out how to replace rollers!!! Rubber rollers eventually crack/break and need to be replaced, and more expensive biz models often have easy to replace pickup rollers, ADF rollers, etc.. The cheaper lasers do not.

The guy you’re responding to is absolutely insane. An Epson EcoTank prints more because it has massive ink cartridges. It solves none of the practical issues an inkjet has. Also, the Brother printer has third party toner available for $40 on Amazon, $250 for name brand IMO, given your use case, get a Brother B&W laser jet (L2405W) and a dedicated scanner. If you must have a combined unit, the L2640DW is good. Not sure why a color laser jet was recommended

I’d say there’s nothing hidden about it. Historically laser printers are cheap to run. Compared to cartridge based inkjet printers they’re still economical. Laser printers haven’t evolved though and inkjets have. Now every major printer manufacturer is offering ink tank printers including brother. But Epson were there first and not just by a few months. By years. They have a massive ecosystem of ink tank printers at all price points with a range of features. Worth spending that money on a laser printer? For what? To print some documents that it seems only you are going to read - fyi an inkjet can typically print at a higher quality / resolution than most business class lasers anyway. There’s other considerations of course. Massive size and weight difference. Massive difference in power consumption.

You’re going to want a much better printer for art prints. I would recommend getting a thermal label printer for a lot of the rest of the stuff that you need though! They’re great for shipping labels, stickers, thank yous, and other labels. Plus you don’t need ink for them!

I tried HP and Epson for years. They would sit there, network connected, at some point every few weeks the need would strike to print, I’d open the print dialogue and… nothing, or something, or dry ink, or misalignment, or some error, or any number of issues. Eventually took Reddit’s advice and just got a Brother laser. Now, I hit print, it prints. The Brother just works. It feels miraculous coming from HP. The Brother will sit there idle for weeks. I’ll send it a job, it will print it, then go back to idle. Exactly like you’d expect. It just “does what it says on the tin”

Is there a such thing as a buy it for life printer??
"Everyone" is afraid that Brother will release a firmware update, such that the printer will no longer allow third-party toner to be used. This is perpetuated by a number of third-party toner resellers. But it has yet to happen, and firmware updates are generally beneficial, so I recommend installing firmware updates shortly after they're released.

Brother printer. Not sure about BIFL, but 7 years now, not hiccups. So much better than the crappy inkjet you can get for that price. Victorinox knives. Cheap, can be sharpened just fine, dishwasher safe (sometimes I like to properly degrease the handle), easily sharpened. Fleece jackets. Thicket, slightly fluffy ones. I use them when at home, or walking the dog. Indestructible, warm. Have had a cheap no brand pair of them for 10 years now. Still fine. Polyester pants are also extremely resilient. Even the freaking ZARA polyester pants I have are 10+ years old, still as new, and survived even skidding on concrete and whatnot.

There was a deal when I got a laptop for school in like 2009 where you could buy an HP printer for $25 when you bought a laptop. That stupid thing cost $50 to refill (~70 in today's money) lasted like 2 months, and would not work with off brands OR with the $30 "refill the HP container" store ink. So finicky in general. I gave up and just paid to print stuff at school. Vs the $25 brother I found in a clearance bin in 2021 that was clearly extremely used, where today it's $45 for a 3 pack of refills (used less than 1.5 of them in 2 years of school, printing lecture slides for every class)

Brother is B/W specialized and Epson ecotank shines after A3 size. If you just need A4 size but with absolutely low maintenance and low ink cost, Canon g550 or similar is the answer.

Brother laser. Look for a used one that’s maybe 2-3 years old if you can find one, because they’ve gone downhill a bit in build quality. They the Nokia phone of printers. My newer one is still better than any other company, it’s just a bit less of a tank than the older one I gave away when I moved.

Brother. Bought a color laser about two years ago, while they do play some games with trying to use 3rd party toner, there are workarounds that work. A MAJOR advatange of laser over ink (any ink, including Ecotank) are that they don't dry out. If you do print somewhat consistently, this isn't a major issue, but if you sometime go weeks or months without a print, toner won't dry out and ruin a cartridge. In our case, we also got a Brother color laser printer for a little under $300 USD, and a separate scanner that was maybe $50, but hitting the copy button on the printer will automatically use the scanner.

I did a bad thing by buying generic ink for the Brother and I think that killed it. Home wireless printer that will print in colour, and with reasonable ink costs.
Laser is the only one with reasonable ink costs, but they’re not great at printing photos. I have a color Brother laser and I love it, but it’s more economical and reliable to print photos at my local Walgreens for like $0.5 per photo than it is to bother wasting money trying to test different print settings to get decent colors. And even once you get it dialed in, the resolution isn’t as good as an inkjet for photos. A good black and white laser is very affordable and the ink is extremely reasonable and lasts awhile.

If you go with a thermal printer you're going to have to get special thermal paper which will negate the ink savings. Just get a decent laser printer. The toner doesn't dry out like ink does if you don't use it for a long time. Even the smaller toner cartridges they ship with last a long time. A brother one will likely last long enough to print your death notice, an HP well likely out last your kids.

Another vote for brother laser printers. I bought a used one and never looked back. My wife bought one of those loss leaders previously and the ink cost more than the printer. Also if you don't use an inkjet for a long time the ink can dry up in the print head and you need a new cartridge.

You can pick up a Brother Monochrome Laser with Duplex Printing for around $135 on Amazon. I’ve had mine (an older model) since 2015. It’s a real workhorse! I print probably 15 to 25 sheets per day every day and I think I’ve had fewer than a dozen paper jams in all of these years. I buy generic toner cartridges ($20 for two) and they last forever. I go through about 4 per year. I have color laser printers, inkjet printers, and thermal printers and they’re all fussy in one way or another. I’m doing some form of maintenance on at least one of those each day so it’s nice to have one printer that I honestly don’t have to think about.

Spent $500 on a brother led "laser" toner printer. Cartridge sets are $70. But they last a year printing upwards of 300 sheets a month. Never had issues. Never gives fits. Sits on the wireless network and prints when you need it. Never dries out. Never going back to inkjet, except maybe if I can get a solid photo printer. We run a buisness that ships from home, so a thermal label printer is also a must have.

Brother is pretty much the only game in town for home printers that last. We have an 11 x 17 one that has been great for 19 years. When it dies, I am buying a used Konica Minolta C300. Sure it is huge, but we have had zero issues with ours at the office beyond running out of toner or forgetting to clean after replacing the reservoir.

Jumping in here. I've had this printer for about 8 years. It works great for me. It accepts OEM cartridges with no complaints. I've never been successful at keeping it connected to WiFi, so I just use a USB cable. Won't print from iPad.

There is a big difference in quality depending on age. What do you want to do? Generally, old machines were built better. Straight stitch - look at 50+ old machines, they will do that perfectly and be reliable. Zig Zag? A bit more complex because it was rare back then. If you can find an old Singer or Pfaff with a zig zag function it will perform well but it will be hard to find. To be honest I'd avoid most other things - zig zag and straight stitch take care of nearly everything. Modern ones have tons of bells and whistles that are quite useless. If I was buying a new hobby machine I'd probably look at Brother because it is generally a good company but I would not expect too much...

funny. My goodwill brother B&W printer is one as well. And I recently got the vitamix kaboodle. I buy merrells. They last forever. I buy good power tools despite rarely using them so they'll last decades. I buy name brand led bulbs and they last eons. I can't think of anything else on the spot but seriously it pays sometimes to get good stuff. Especially if you can get it secondhand in good condition. I guess one example is my honda crv I got 5 years ago. Still drives like new and I only have tires coming up at 50k miles. And it will drive on for years.

This is my experience as well. The Brother small B&W lasers are among the best at that price point, provided you don’t print high volume. I’ve had one for about 8 years and it handles the 200 or so pages I need to print each year and I think over only changed the toner maybe once. While it would be nice if it was color, I definitely don’t miss that enough to justify the price/footprint. Your mileage may vary though.

Another vote for Brother laser printers. Laser printers have higher print quality, don't smudge, and are cheaper to own/operate than inkjet printers. With inkjet printers, if you print a lot, you will go through ink cartridges frequently and they aren't cheap. If you don't print a lot, the inkjet cartridges will dry out or "expire" and you will have to replace them. Laser printers may cost a little more up front but the toner cartridges last a long time. I feel like inkjet printers are a loss leader only sold to get you hooked on buying inkjet cartridges.

But in the last 5 years, the thing has a mind if it's own. It makes all these noises, restarts on its own in the middle of printing. Can't connect to wifi without hours of tinkering with it. My family got a brother and they love it. That will be my next brand I purchase.

I went with an integrated scanner on my second Brother laser printer. The first may have survived for a much longer time had I not spilled milk into it but it didn't have a scanner. But the fact my second Brother is an MFC with an auto document feeder for the scanner I now look back on that mistake of spilling milk and I'm actually glad I upgraded to an MFC. I scan things and the auto document feeder just makes that process so much easier. I no longer have to feed documents page by page nor turn over pages that have information on both sides of the page. Laser is definitely the way to go if you don't intend to print photos. B&W is definitely going to be more cost effective. Most color laser printers only come with starter toners and after that a full set of all color toners will cost you more than a new printer. You may do better with third party toners but personally this isn't something I do and with only B&W it's just simply not worth it to me. I've seen some people post claiming Brother is moving to print drivers that will lock down those printers to use only OEM toner cartridges, I just don't know if this is true or not. Here again I use OEM toner cartridges anyway. Here again it really depends on the amount of color and type you plan on printing but for some folks who only print a few things in color it might be more advisable to do that at print shop or Walmart\\Walgreens depending on what it is. When you buy a printer you also might want to check the price of what it will cost to replace your toner cartridges. Brother also uses a replaceable drum and at least on mine the drum is good for two toner cartridges. I actually chose a larger printer or MFC because I can also use higher capacity toner cartridges which in effect even cost less per page to print. When it comes to a color laser the black toner cartridge is going to be much smaller because it uses three other colors and three other toner cartridges.

I've had my Brother HL-2270DW (b&w laser) for almost 15 years. Never any issues. Cheap toner. Couldn't be happier. My mom's been having constant issues with her relatively new (1-2 years) Epson. I finally convinced her to get a Brother MFC-L3780CDW. It's not cheap, but she prints a lot and it'll pay for itself in just a few months, as she was going through ink carts at a rate of 1-2 a month.

Brother, or generally any laser printer with a toner which is easy to refills. I got a used Lexmark laser color printer with a heat roller defect for cheap. It has a plastic cap which can be opened to refill toner. It also seems that toners have been refilled preciously. Magenta toner days it is empty but will still print no problem. I'd avoid hp and Epson. EcoTank ones are fine too but from my perspective, ink printers are not the way to go either if you're printing too much or too little.

No need to pay $800 for a model when the Costco choice will do 90% of all that for only $250.

I refuse to own a color printer so here is my solution. I print so few color pages that the ink was always dried out when it was time to print! I have a Brother laser printer at home for back and white prints. Love it. Total workhorse. I go to my local Kinkos/Staples etc. for color prints. Pictures I go online or to Walgreens. At 50 cents a print and 10 a week, a year would cost you 260 with no maintenance or ink costs for the prints. I am very close to these places so travel is not an issue. Your situation may be different.

Honestly the *type* of printer you get might be more important. Inkjet printers are only good if you use them constantly. Otherwise the ink dries to the heads and causes issues. Laser printers have nothing to dry out as the toner is a powder and the printer uses heat to fuse it to the paper. So if you are a seldom printer, go laser 100% and you won't have to worry about ink. I bought a cheap black and white canon laser printer around 13 years ago and I have just replaced the toner and the thing has been flawless the entire time. On the other hand, my parents have two different Epson printers. One bought two years ago, and the printer head went bad. The other was new in the box, I set it up and filled all of the ink slots. I printed two black pages, nothing crazy..I even had color printing turned off, but I noticed the printer sucked out a bunch of the colored ink after that print job. Same thing happened after an 18 page B/W print job which was done immediately after. Why is it depleting the ink so quickly?

Color is always going to be more expensive and B&W laser is by far the cheapest and easiest to maintain. If you need color only occasionally for photo's that can be accomplished at your nearest Walgreens, Walmart, or printing store. Color Lasers aren't going to be what you would want to print photos with anyway and typically they come with starter cartridges and replacement cartridges for color laser printers typically cost more than the printer. They are extremely expensive. At least the manufacturers toner cartridges. I've had a Brother B&W laser printer for about the last 17 years and the only reason I am on my second one is because I spilled milk in my first one. Had I not done that I would still have the first more than likely. However I'm actually glad I upgraded because I decided to buy a MFC this time with a built in auto document feeder and scanner where I can drop in items I want scanned on both sides and no longer have to use a manual feed scanner. I don't scan tons of things but I do scan in important documents I want to keep and this makes that process so much easier and faster. Used to be printers which had built in scanners weren't as good as separate scanners and that simply is no longer true. Besides that auto document feeder is heaven sent. If you are thinking you might ever have the need for a scanner do yourself a favor and get an MFC with an auto document feeder at the same time you are buying a printer. Besides if you buy right a laser printer should last you a very long time. When determining which printer to get take a look into how much the toner cartridges and for brother how much the replacement drum cost. I bought these supplies at the same time, yet I am still on my first toner cartridge that came with my printer I bought about five years ago. Granted my printer is a fairly big printer but since I bought a two pack of high capacity cartridges this stuff is going to last me a long time. That is another thing to consider which is buying the highest capacity cartridge you can for the machine you buy. This reduces your cost per page. Granted they can't calculate for certain how much you will print per page but it gives you a good idea. Bottom line the speed per page is not the only line item you might want to look at before buying your printer. I've heard Brother is starting to use drivers which prevent your machine from using third party ink toners. If true that can be huge for some people. Can't say for sure as I have always used Brother ink toner cartridges anyway. This being another benefit of using ink toner in that it doesn't dry out, no ink heads to clean, toner cartridges tend to be much cheaper, not as messy, and easier to replace. Much of this also depends on what exactly you intend to print. But for someone like me printing black and white text pages mainly it's the best value for your money for that type of printing. Determine this before selecting the type of printer you want to get.

Black and white laser printer: theyre surprisingly inexpensive and one toner cartridge lasts us more than a year AND it doesn't dry out if we don't use it. The kids complain they can't print in color, but I tell them they just need to color it themselves. :) If there is something important, I can get it printed elsewhere. Our Brother is fantastic. But if you're looking at a Brother, check the information carefully. Some of the new ones have chips so you can only use their ink (Amazon has knock off toner cartridges for around $17 and I've never had an issue with any of them.)

Yes! Not sure how old my Brother laser printer is (15+years) but it was worth whatever I paid for it. It has printed so much paper and it’s still on only the 2nd cartridge ever. Secret to extending the cartridge life by year(s) is to put a piece of black electrical tape over the sensor on the end of the Cartridge.

I went with the $110 Brother monochrome laser printer you can get at Walmart. I had an HP back through college and after and it was a PITA. Also, 95% of the time if not 99% of the time, I don't need color printing. I even stopped printing my own photography at home, the gear was just getting too expensive to maintain for my needs. This thing prints just fine from any device in my house, does it quick, and was cheap.

Costco has the Brother MFC-L3765CDW color laser for $390. It does a good job at printing, does double-sided. I use VueScan for scan control; it does a great job from linux or windows.

This is it, but I'll add don't buy a new one. Get a refurbished one with only limited Wi-Fi capabilities. I have a brother 2280dw. I bought mine used over 10 years ago. And it still works great, I've had it repaired once which was absolutely worth the cost. It can't do fancy airprint, but it does have Wi-Fi printing.

I bought the cheapest Brother laser printer. Doesn't do color but I've had no issues with it. My problem is I don't use my home printer much. What screws up an inkjet printer is not using it. With the laser printer, it can sit around for months not used and it still works fine.

Unless you are my Aunt Sal who prints out 84 color pictures a day, look to a B&W laserjet made by Brother/HP. There is a rap battle between brands that reminds me of the Stihl/Husqvarna chainsaw rap battle but either will be fine. You can use my color printer if you want. I keep it over at Walgreens and they get to deal with that drama and can print a color paper or photos small or the Shroud of Turin size within an hour for 28 cents.

Another vote for Brother lasers. Pay the little extra for the MFC versions. Having the ability to photocopy and scan can be invaluable, and the cost is peanuts when amortized over the decades+ of ownership I'd also highly recommend getting ones with duplex printing and scanning, along with colour printing, but those aren't as needed

Last I saw, HP bricks your printer if you cancel your ink subscription, even if you have working ink cartridges in it. I would include in criteria no subscription and lower price of ink. I liked my Canon multifunction printer until it developed a permanent paper jam (but still use the scanner). I have a Brother black & white printer that’s a workhorse.

First we had a wireless Samsung that had connection problems and now we have a LAN wired Brother that is a small tank churning out those pages. The one time we needed color we went to a print shop. Every 18 months I pay 60€ for toner which I don’t mind doing because this thing is mega reliable.

I’m currently using an HP Color LaserJet MFP M283fdw and an old LaserJet Professional P1102W. Was a bear to connect to wireless and keep connected, but it prints B&W single-sided fine, and toner is reasonable and long-lived. I’ve had inkjets (Canon did great glossy prints), but buying ink is crazy maker, $$$-wise. And so much ink gets wasted to avoid clogging. Never again, unless it’s one of the poster-size plotters… My CLJ MFP M282fdw works, does nice two-sided printing. Scans and copies well. HP color toner cartridges are stupidly overpriced, and HP just pushed a firmware update that actually prevents the use of 3rd party toner carts. This is unacceptable. Never buying HP again. Does AirPrint for mobile devices that support it. But network/wireless can be cranky. And HP makes the worst printer software in the world. Consistently, over decades. Funny, for a company that built and sold computers that ran good software. Many commentators say plainly: get a Brother monochrome laser jet. It just works. I own a HL3230CDW. This is an older model. Might be difficult to get a brand new one. My research concluded the cheapest to replace parts. I was in the same spiral with inkjets. I owned an HP Mono basic printer served us well. My wife does craft and now have 2 school age kids. Inkjet was a nightmare for me ! I was so obsessed in getting a printer and done with it. The new HP ones are horrible , doesn’t connect , paper jams, subscription etc. one day I though of literally smashing the printer on the floor as I needed a print in emergency. I was keeping an eye on fb and eBay. The brother , Ricoh, Siemens are good in my research. But they did cost ( initial ) , I paid an open box for £110. It was literally brand new. I activated the official warranty as well. Tested it for a week and all great. It felt like having an “orgasam” when now I press print and it comes out without any troubles. I feel so much happy about spending that money on a printer. Almost a year we are half way through the toner. Maintenance wise I cannot comment yet, but when I was reading this model cartridge was cheapest on market . ( not official) all accessories were also cheaper. You can get high capacity cartridge which is slightly expensive but more pages. Before buying this one , I bought a used Samsung ( now HP I guess) was also a very good model, but had terrible experience. If you buy second hand ensure the cartridge use, fuser life, waste drum etc to be checked ( can get a print of all current status ). Anything below 50%, might not worth depending on the price. For my requirements were ; Have a LAN connection. At present WiFi works ok. No issues. It may be my old router was the issue. Automatic Duplex ( two sided printing ). Some are manual , so check this or else it will be another nightmare if you forget to manually flip the papers to get a double sided print. Colour. ( with my model or any laser entry level printer won’t be great for photos.) My use was kids activities etc, quality of colour not an issue. My Epsom inkjet did a great job in colour but I spent £50 on ink every few months. Not economical. Cheap accessories : toner ( TN243) which is the cheaper replacement cartridge available . Agree with this advice, I went down the route of Brother laser colour printer (HL-L3220CDW) and a Canon USB C flatbed scanner. The scanner was $81, the printer $250, and I am almost daily glad I purchased them. I've had Brother laser printers before and they are near indestructible. I've done a lot of printing from this one actually and still haven't needed to replace the toners. The scanner is fine. I prefer it separate to the printer because I can set it up right next to my computer for scanning sessions (so I can see what I'm scanning) instead of walking back and forth between printer and computer. It's pretty compact so it can then be tucked away between sessions. No idea about Linux compatibility, sorry.

My mom is a quilter. She has used Singer and Brother machines. She really doesn't like any of the Singers except the very oldest. She prefers Brother for her stuff i think mainly for the available features. Maybe ease of use. I have an old "Singer Merritt 1982." I just recently got it in working order. Its relatively easy to use and works well despite being an older household machine. Like another comment said: buy a used machine, and see how well you like it. AS FAR AS THE QUILT GOES: Firstly, you plan to use hoodies for it. Thats going to be hard. Hoodies are a knit material with a felt on the back. It is stretchy and thick. Normal quilting material is thinner and tighter woven. It doesnt stretch much. The hoodie material will be hard to piece and have lay flat. If you continue with that plan, just be aware and minimize the number of seems you need. Secondly, quilting is an art. There is alot to learn. There are many techniques you need to know just to make a decent one, not even a good one. So take a class, watch videos, or find someone who can show you. Thirdly, it is expensive. You'll buy a machine, thread, bobbins scissors, cutters, rulers, pins, fabric, batting, an iron, binding/bias tape, backer fabric, and thats not even to do the quilting. Thats just piecing. Paying someone else to quilt it for you can be $300 or more. My mom makes the designs and pieces them, then has someone else quilt them, then she binds them herself. Time and materials can easily be $1,200 for a full sized quilt.

Brother Printers - No Longer BIFL
This is a several-years-old change. I've been mentioning this in every thread about printers for over a year now (and it wasn't new when I first found out about it). The chip swap also worked for me though, and, at least for now, it's still pretty easy. A lot of people still swear by them because they have old, non-internet connected brother printers that don't get the auto update, not realizing that newer printers are different. Unfortunately, there aren't that many better options. Epson Eco-tank printers are apparently good if you are ok with inkjet (I've never used one so I don't know, but people online appear to be happy), but if you want a laser printer, I don't know of anyone who doesn't do this kind of BS, so Brother is (probably) still the least-bad of all the options. Since their actual hardware is pretty good, and, for now, getting around their DRM is pretty easy.

That's what I went with (3830, I think). My old boss got one in the office and I must have ran 10 reams of paper through that thing before having to refill just the black ink which was only like $30 for the whole bottle that contained more than the printer holds. Once I saw that I got one when I started my business. Only 1 hickup in the past year and a half of daily use and all I did was turn it off then back on and it worked fine.

Samsung did this shit about a decade ago. I had one of their printers, and was having trouble printing a thing for work. Online it was suggested a firmware update would fix the issue, so I updated the firmware and it immediately bricked my generic toner cartridge. Otherwise the printer was great, but they did that shit and I switched to Brother.

Honestly, Brother's toner prices are good enough, third party toner is/was the least of the many, many reasons Brother is my go-to printer brand. If I lose that, I don't care, I never did it anyway, and Brother is still light-years better than the rest of the pack. Not to mention that my experience with third-party ink and toner have been so universally terrible in various ways over the decades, I would be very surprised if their concerns about many third party toners screwing up print quality wasn't entirely justified. Even if this is maybe not the greatest way to address that. (BTW, it's a firmware update, not a driver update.)

BIFL, but also BISecondhand. What are some things that everyone should keep an eye out for, but can commonly be found for cheap when preowned.
Beginner/entery level hobby tools/supplies. Someone already went from „ /insert the hobby name/ is the hobby of my life i must buy this and that, and that” to „ugh, I haven’t touched this stuff in half a year”. For example, sewing machines are easy to get new secondhand. The issue is that you must do the research before that to not buy smth looking more fancy from a garbage brand like singer because it has more stitches than brother with the same price. But you most likely would make the same mistake buying a new one unless you’d be buying from a local small shop. You can also buy a good used sewing machine from someone who upgraded theirs. They probably know and love their machine, serviced it before putting on sale and can help you with the initial setup + might have some additional accessories included that they acquired over the years. This are most likely to appear after some big holidays with gift giving traditions.

I had an old brother printer that lasted probably 10+ years even after being dropped. It did eventually die so I bought another. They are very solid imo but I am not a fan of their software. It has ads and pushes their subscription service.

I got one of these 8 years ago. Laser is so much better than ink jet as far as cost per page use, toner life and general performance. Brother makes good printers, too. The reason these are not necessarily "for life" is that some of the parts are a little expensive relative to buying a new one. For example, when I bought this one, it was $150 or so new, but just the new drum unit was like $80 from Brother (can't remember exactly). So, there's a sort of economic death that can ultimately make them more disposable. Still infinitely better than my last ink jet.

L2550DW is an absolute BEAST. I love this model, and you have absolutely every modern function and it is A BREEZE to do maintenance and repair. Just be careful with power, specially connecting on power bars and/or no breaks, because when it starts going, it pulls a huge power load

I am a grad student. It is nothing for me to print a few hundred pages in a week. This thing is a beast. I bought it new 4 years ago, and it is still going a t. I replaced the cartridge for the first time 6 months ago. I doubt a printer will ever be truly buy it for life, but I could see getting 10 years out of it, and in the printer world that is pretty good..

Good and reasonably cheap color printers?
Are you gonna be doing this often? Because if you are then it's totally worth it. Think about it like this, it's not a kettle where you can expect it to be cheap and also last a long time, it's got proper electronics in it, network cards, etc etc. You kinda want something like that which will last 10+ years to be fairly decent. I bit the bullet myself about 5 years ago, and indeed got a brother. I had seen recommendations here but I also remembered one of my old bosses had a brother printer which looked like it was 50 years old. I should have gotten it sooner.

That has not been my experience either professionally or personally. I own a Brother Laser and an Epson tank; both are less than five years old and have worked seamlessly without issue. Most of the problems owners run into is simply failing to due routine maintenance.

I tested printers for nearly 30 years; in all honesty, there are no good, inexpensive printers as they are all inkjets. The printers themselves were created as loss leaders by the manufacturers; they make their money on the ink, and some, like HP, insert chips in their cartridges so you can only use their expensive, proprietary ink and not third-party. If you can afford it, buy a basic Brother Color Laser. They are about $300, more initially than you’d spend on an ink jet, but the toner cartridges will last far longer, so you will save money in the long run. Plus, unlike inkjet printers, they are reliable and rarely require repair as long as you follow the maintenance schedule.

I tested printers for more than 20 years. If you want/need both a printer and a scanner, buy a Brother Multifunction Laser. If you don’t scan that often, just download a scanning app on your phone; many of them work really well, then buy a Brother basic laser printer. The initial outlay is more than an inkjet printer, but the toner lasts a long time and you’ll have very little problems with the printer itself. HP is the bane of my existence and they started the proprietary ink cartridge nonsense by placing chips on their cartridges so you can only use theirs.

I believe HP sells their printers at a loss so that they can lock you into their overpriced ink cartridge scam. You can get 3rd party refilled cartridges but it is hit and miss if they work as HP put stupid unnecessary chips into each cartridge that sometimes don't work when you refill them. To escape their scam, you have to bite the bullet and get a different brand of printer. Brother printers seem to be the highest recommended printer on this sub

I recently just bought a Laser brother printer. 1.) Because brother doesn't give a shit if you buy aftermarket 2.) The toner will last like 3000 prints which will last me a lifetime. I bought mine from an Amazon return store auction site for 1/4 the price $115 vs $400 MSRP. Check you local state bedsheets for surplus, colleges and government buildings upgrade all the time and the true industrial grade printers last forever. Then just buy new toner and your golden.

Brother laser printers. The one in my home is 12 years old and I’ve only changed the toner twice. Still going strong. I’ve dealt with thousands of printers and those are the only ones that don’t have issues. Ink jets are very bad if you go long times between printing. Heads get clogged and funky.

I picked up my Brother DCP-J4120DW off the street a year and a half ago and I've just now had to change an ink cartridge for the first time. I primarily print sewing patterns so it's not a lot of ink. Almost no problems at all, and the fact it was free makes it so much better. First printer I haven't wanted to throw out the window.

I have the same one and it also prints like a treat! A few years ago I modded it to make the cartridges refillable with a syringe and ink bottles I got off Amazon. I admit that we also have the B&W brother printer that is our old reliable (I sent my husband to the store with the instructions to ask for the dumbest-ie not smart printer they had. 10/10 printer) but when I need to print stickers or photos on fancy paper, my Canon is worth the effort I put in to it.

I have a Brother HL-L3230CDW which does and it's pretty much the same in reliability. I'm not sure if you'd call it super cheap though. The monochrome laser printers can be had for under $100, but color laser printers start in the $300-400 range. I was lucky to get mine on sale for $280. Also you need to consider the size of color laser printers. The 3230 weighs 45 pounds.

Use fb marketplace to buy a $20 brother b&w laser print. Plus if it has wifi it's better. Had mine for years. Back then, buying a brother laser printer that came with toner was $50. It was cheaper to sell it on marketplace for $30-40 and then go buy the same a new printer for $50...I did this for years until Brother increased and upgraded their basic printer. Now my college offers free printing..I don't need it at all.

I didn’t know they had color versions of these! I got my Brother 1-color model in 2008, and it works every time I need it (i.e. almost never). If I still used inkjet, it’d sit around for months, and the one time I really need it, it’s dry because it sat there drying up. With laser printers, it can sit unused for *years* and work perfectly.

I've had my HL2270DW B&W for at least 10 years. It has an issue with losing the WiFi settings if you turn it off, but I just set the LED to not come on and leave it on. I rarely need it, but it works perfectly every time.

Mine is a little older now, about 400 or so, but MFC-L3770CDW has treated us well for 4.5 years now. Off brand toner, easy software. It's just a big machine is my only issues. The "troubleshoot me" in software, actually worked. I would buy another Brother when the time comes.

I have a Brother B&W laser printer that is ~8 years old. Love it. I just got a Brother Color laser about a year ago so now I have both. There is no subscription bullshit on either one. Plus, they both work flawlessly on both Windows and Linux. I really hope Brother doesn't cross over to the dark side. The MBAs will do their thing at some point, I'm sure. But not today.

definitely buy a B&W one if you don't need color printing, I just fucked up buying Amazon toners which are significantly cheaper, but the printer recognize non-compatible toner somehow (there's a small chip on them, you can replace them with valid brother toners's chips but I'm not hacking toners like i've got other things to do), so I decided to buy Brother brand's toners. I assume that if you buy toners in a shop that says there are compatible, they are compatible. I was just fed up at the time. That said, overall usage is good.

Most brother printers are great. Not BIFL but printers imply are not BIFL. Check user reviews. The cheapest crap will be cheap crap but come with a good warranty. The replacement process is usually drive <30mi, be told they will fix it, get an email that they will be replacing it, new box arrives in mail. No subscription required and plenty of off-brand cartridges on Amazon. The authentic cartridges are great but not cheap. The off-brands sometimes leak and sometimes are fine. Cleaning a printer sucks. The old box shaped HL series printers that are only printers last forever and I’ve seen them win fights against angry employees fists. The color MFC series for professional use (>$500) self-destruct about once a year. Brother is great, some models are duds, cartridges are cheap, warranty is honored.

I bought it for $45 6 years ago and the seller included a second toner cartridge because the one in it was used. I just swapped in that second cartridge last year.

Where are people getting this idea that you HAVE to get subscriptions for their printers?? Yes, HP and Brother have subscriptions to get new ink/toner cartridges, but you don't NEED to have that to physically use the printer... ever. I've owned probably 6 HP printers and just got a brother laser one for Christmas. I've never once in my life had a subscription for my printers, and I've always been able to use them just fine. When I run out of ink/toner, I go to the store to buy it myself. I don't print anywhere remotely close to enough to be paying every month for new ink. I'd have enough for multiple lifetimes in just a year 😂

We have two MFC2700s in our small office and I like them. The only issue is it will refuse to print when it "Runs out of toner" but I just learned the code to reset the software counter and trick it into thinking it has a new cartridge. Works for the "Replace Drum" message too.

To add: color toner is much more expensive than black toner. The vast majority of people don’t really need color printing; I’ve maybe wished I had a color printer once or twice in the 20+ years I’ve owned B&W printers. Unless you absolutely need color, I’d recommend a B&W printer.

I have a brother, 5 years old and running great and I’ve yet to run out of the original ink, but I don’t use it everyday. My mom has one that’s at least 10 years old, it was my dad’s and he ran 100s of pages per day. Still works perfectly. Ink isn’t cheap but it lasts a very long time. Mine sat for 2 years and I didn’t even have to clean the heads. I’ve never heard of a required subscription service.

My Brother is a bigger unit that I bought primarily because it had a sheet fed scanner (MFC-L8900CDW). It’s 6.5 years old. I’m sure all major players do offer some kind of subscription model (and many businesses have used subscription models for printers for years, but it doesn’t make sense for mine). I don’t pay in any event for any kind of subscription. The only real issue I’ve had with it is that I occasionally have to remove and re-add it to my windows PC (it’s on our LAN). I bought this anyway though, primarily because it had the best sheet fed scanner that I could find in the price range, at the time.

You can do a lot with a small sewing kit and YouTube videos to teach you different types of stitches. Sewing machines are great if you’re willing to spend the money. You can pick up a reliable machine like a Singer or Brother for under $200. With regular cleaning and maintenance it should last for decades. The nice thing about learning basic sewing on a machine is that you can hem your own pants and alter clothing that doesn’t fit quite right. It also makes mending a breeze!

What are some BIFL Wedding Gifts?
These are really expensive but Breville toaster oven, zojirushi rice cooker, vitamix blender and immersion blender, le cruset Dutch oven, 3D printer, kitchenaid stand mixer and accessories, Brother printer, all Clad pots. A lot of these companies have refurbished options you can ask for. I think any of these items would be great secondhand.

What is your favorite category of BIFL products?
I am not saying electronics can't be BIFL but most aren't because we want "feature". We have maybe 6 pieces of electronics that made it past 10 years that we still use regularly. Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker Zojirushi Micom Water Boiler & Warmer Vitamax from Costco years A Bothers Laserjet/Scanner combo GE Cafe Series Fridge from like 2013, no Wifi nothing special other than it boils hot water DD-WRT based gigabyte router (no wifi) The common thing these 6 things all do well is that they do their primary function extremely well and based on well established protocols. There no bell and whistles on top.

Yes! I have been using brother printers for last 10 years in my office and home. I always love to use them. Specially, their MFP Printers.

Brothers Printer sucks, my experience
This is where I think Brother's weak point is. Great hardware; dodgy support software. I've had a similar problem at the connection level. When connection is lost, it's not as easy as it should be to resume. Going up to scanning functions, I'm now dependent on Brother's "iPrint&Scan" software, because for my model (MFC-J6955DW) the feed is, unusually, long-side first for regular (A4) paper, and the image is re-oriented internally by 90 degrees. That message isn't clear to other software I may want to use, including the otherwise fabulous PaperPort software they bundle. PaperPort was part of why I would previously often choose a Brother printer: they outsourced what they couldn't do so well themselves. Now I'm nagged to download updates of iPrint&Scan far too often - especially as it's a mammoth half-gigabyte! I'm inclined to wonder whether it's legit - but the digital certificates suggest it is. All the same, Brother only assert copyright at 2017, so that doesn't lend confidence. I have two Brothers on the network: a monochrome laser and the inkjet. I get notifications from "iPrint&Scan" telling me about low supplies on the laser printer that I'm not using. Later, for the printer I'm using, I get a low paper warning, then a "green" all-is-well, then I hear beeps from the printer that suggest that - yes - it's run out of paper. Then up comes the message that actually prompted my web search for others in pain: "Driver setup is required to use your selected machine." This "selected" machine is, again, the \*unselected\* laser printer. No link or further information is given to assist. I found another user on the web who has logged this message on scampulse.com. That user reported Googling for support and ended up dealing with a scammer. I believe, actually, that I have legitimate software (from tracing the iPrint&Scan digital certificates).
