How do synthetic base layers compare to merino wool base layers?
Both wool and wicking synthetic shirts are key to starting dry and warm while being active outdoors. Staying away from cotton is the key. One interesting active undergarment is the mesh thermo shirt like ones from Brynje. Wins in the quick dry department. Don't know about BIFL.

Looking for a winter coat
Everyone here suggesting just a down jacket doesn't know what they're talking about. You want a proper 3 layer layering system. You want a Merino base layer (or a mesh base layer from Brynje) that wicks moisture away from your skin and traps your body heat close to your body. Then you want a down or synthetic jacket. This provides the bulk of your warmth. Down is generally best, but if it comes in contact with water it's ruined. Some down has hydrophobic treating but that can only do so much. Synthetic is better for moisture, but besides that Down really is legues better for warmth, weight, and packability. Then on top you want a shell. The shell keeps you dry. Gore-tex is nice and all, but sheds PFAS and is extremely expensive. Save money and the environment and buy a Patagonia torrentshell. This 3 layer system will keep you dry and warm and is cheaper + more functional compared to a Canada goose parka. The beauty of layering is that you can change your layers according to your needs. Once you get inside you can take off your outer layers and leave your base on, if it's not wet out you can leave the shell at home, if it's just windy and wet but not too cold you can just use the shell and base layers.

What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it?
Not OP, but I ski and these things are all I use for baselayers (I use Brynje ones, but same concept). They look absurd, but I swear, no baselayer I’ve used is near as good. They are literally warmer, somehow. It looks impossible, but it’s true. And they are also, much more obviously, super breathable. I tend to work up a good sweat skiing, so I need high high breathability but also warmth. These things deliver. I haven’t found anything else that comes close. I spend all day warm and dry no matter what I’m doing. I recommend them as baselayers to absolutely anyone, but people are always skeptical because they look like you could wear them clubbing in Berlin. My single favorite ski clothing product though. And you can use them as long underwear for anything.
