SAFE alternative to Bunn MyCafe Coffee Maker?
I have had this same model (MCU) since at least 2016, using it daily. I had this issue happen like 3 years in and this is what I do now: 1) I make sure that pop out screen is cleaned with soap at least weekly with dawn. I mostly rinsed it originally. And about every two years I call Bunn and have them mail me a replacement. 2) I unscrew the sprayer (it is meant to be easily taken apart) every so often and I make sure to clean that rubber gasket real well. I also take the spray head that pops off and I make sure none of the holes are clogged with calcium buildup. I have Bunn send me a replacement gasket when they send that replacement screen. After having started this routine, I have never experienced another explosion. Also, Bunn has never charged me for these parts. For beans, I use an Oxo burr grinder. The ones that are around $100. The grind is always set to 7. As you already know, it makes a dang good cup of coffee. I was determined to keep it going. It’s been running like a champ ever since, and explosion free. I hope whatever you decide on has you enjoying a great coffee again soon.

The Cup-One is their single cup brewer. The glass carafe automatic drip stopper models have a half carafe setting which will slow the flow rate for when you aren't brewing a full carafe and the manual drip stoppers have a half-open setting which achieves the same thing. I've been brewing a half liter of coffee using a KBT and the half-carafe setting for about 4 years now, only issue is that I occasionally forget the reset the manual drip stopper. I do like having the flexibility to make a 1.25 liters when we have guests or my wife would like to have coffee.

What have you used the most at home these two years?
Ninja Toaster Oven/Airfryer. Instapot. Bunn 10 cup coffee maker. Its water reservoir heats up the water. We buy whole beans and use a burr grinder. It takes very little time and cheap to make a pot of coffee.

If you drink *a lot* of coffee everyday, I suggest finding a used Bunn restaurant machine. There are pour-over models but most are plumbed in (fairly easy to do). Some are 120 volts but some are 240. 12 cup carafes and the larger restaurant basket filters. Always has a hot urn of water to brew a pot of coffee in about 3 minutes. Ours has a hot water spigot too. Fully serviceable and manuals are available online. Brew temps are adjustable. Quite a few years ago we lucked out getting one for $20 (I had to confirm it was $20 and not $200!) in great shape and its been going strong with basically a pot on the go from noon to midnight. I'm guessing it was giving them issues as the receptionist was very happy to see it go. I opened it up and found a bunch of shale in the bottom of the boiler, cleaned it all up and it has been great since.

I have a similar model that has a stainless steel carafe and thus no heating pad. The carafe keeps the coffee hot for at least an hour. They keep a hot water tank so there is no need to heat up water. Just pour in the amount you need for your grounds and it will displace the appropriate amount of hot water to pour over the grounds.

I got a similar BUNN machine to the one in the top comment and it comes very close in quality in about half the time and a quarter the energy as my chemex. Still make chemex on the weekend though.

The Bunn is the best coffeemaker I've ever had, and maybe user error is the problem. I use less coffee, not more. If it's too fast for you, the grind is too coarse. Using a coarse grind, you'd have to use more coffee. Use a finer grind, or call Bunn and they will send you, for free, a different sprayhead. You just unscrew the black sprayhead that came with it and replace it with one with less holes so the water flow is slower. I have a number of different sprayheads that Bunn sent me for free. I mostly grind my own beans and use a different sprayhead for packaged preground coffee than I use for whole beans that I grind.

Also not a snob, and my family has used a Bunn my whole life. I prefer the Bunn with a thermal carafe for daily use. Coffee stays fresh and hot for hours and is acceptable as iced coffee the next day if you don’t finish the pot. Until very recently I used one that was maybe 20 years old and had repaired it two or three times (~$10 kit on eBay). I’m 33 and that was the second Bunn my parents had owned in my lifetime. One day they told me they were getting rid of it because it didn’t work and had already gotten a new one so I took it. It was an easy fix. Eventually some plastic parts broke while I had guests staying over, and I finally bought a new one to solve my lack-of-coffee problem quickly. The new one delivers the same consistent pots as ol’ faithful.

One thing to consider about the Bunn—we use more coffee grounds to get the strength we want than we do with a typical drip coffee maker because the water flow is much faster. It adds up fairly quickly (I got the Bunn for $5 and love the convenience of it so it’s hard for me to let go.)

Recommendations for coffee machine - single serve?
That makes sense, I wonder what drove that design decision away from their other models’ winning design. I use a Bunn BTX-B and it does great for any recipes bigger than 1L, but I do wish they had a shower head with a little more distribution and a little slower flow rate. If it ever kicks the bucket, I’ll probably have to look at one of the other Moccamaster models if the smaller one isn’t built the same way. Really appreciate the insight.

It is a rather interesting situation you've run into. The only other thing I could recommend to try is getting a bulk pack of the filters. I know Home Depot has a 1000 pack of filters, and they're packaged in a bag for "food service" use. Bunn's part number is 20106.0000 for the 8-12 cup ones that are the same size as the 100 count box.

One thing that helps with the French Press is that I have a dispenser that has hot filtered water ready to go. I've switched completely from the BUNN to the Press for Coffee, Tea, and also for filtering herbs/leaves out of oil/butter infusions. I used to live in apartments where I didn't have space for a dispenser. The BUNN served me well from 2011-2025. I'll still keep it around. It was awesome for single serve with my own coffee. I used to wrap the grounds in a paper filter though, then stuff it into the loose ground attachment. Without the paper, the coffee had too much sediment and wasn't flavorful enough for me.

It looks like a lot of people have missed the spirit of your question. You want something simple that just works, probably go with a basic drip machine, like a Bunn or Mr. Coffee. The cheapness in this case is a reflection of the basic construction, there are few parts to break and they really do last a long time without any maintenance. French press is a good option too, but I personally don’t like the intense flavor you get from one.

My in-laws own a Bunn that makes the best coffee. It’s a model that has a warmer on the side in addition to the warmer under the spout. They ordered it special from a restaurant supply store because at one point there were seven heavy coffee drinkers in the house at once. When it’s broken in the past they’ve had it repaired, because it CAN be repaired. Great coffee, great in-laws!!

I sense the general consensus will be Moccamaster. And based on reviews, I can't disagree. But I have two concerns about them. First is the price ($350+), and the other is the height. Most kitchens are going to have upper cabinets, and to me, it would require me pulling it out to pour water into it, and then push it back. Seems very inconvenient. FWIW, our go-to coffee maker has been the Bunn Speed Brew line of products.

The Bunn VP-17-1SS is simple to operate and an absolute tank. All of its components that touch hot water are stainless steel, so you don't have to worry about microplastics or plastic leaching from the machine. I went from a $100 Cuisinart machine to the VP-17 for approximately $600 all-in (with the stainless steel basket and carafe ordered separately) and my drip coffee has never tasted better. The machine is constantly heating too, so the coffee is made almost immediately after you pour in fresh water; just make sure to keep the recommended reserve amount of water so that it doesn't boil dry (though it may have a mechanism to prevent that, I am not sure) and/or unplug it if you won't be using it for more than a couple of days. All in all, I am completely satisfied with mine. It's a commercial grade machine and it performs like one.

We have a hand-me-down Bunn coffee maker that I’ve been using for 4 years, my boyfriend used a year before that, and his mom used for several years before that. So at least 8 years I’d say? We’ve had to replace the carafe a few times because my boyfriend and glass things don’t mix but the coffee maker is going strong being used every day and multiple times a day! Plus it has a reservoir for hot water in the back so it brews instantly.

The Bunns are the only coffee makers I know that use near boiling water to make the coffee. They also use a spray to saturate all the coffee in the filter evenly. That does give them an advantage in speed but if your coffee is sitting in a burner rather than being stored in an insulated carafe - it’s going to get burned.

I put a Bunn direct-plumbed under counter unit in my kitchen remodel back in 2007 (and apparently it’s been long enough I can’t even find a link to it anymore). It was 3-4 inches tall and mounted under an upper cabinet. (So like just the top part of a regular Bunn coffee maker.). It came with a coffee basket and a thermal carafe. Super simple, the only control was a dial that went from 2-12 cups. I plugged it into a timer plug (this was before smart plugs) and had hot perfect coffee every morning. So 18 years of flawless performance. I recently sold that house and didn’t really think to highlight it until I was talking with one of the Buyer’s agents and was like “oh and also, this is a plumbed coffee maker, you can make coffee every day with fresh water, but you never have to fill it up.” 🤷♀️ That became a huge selling point in the kitchen - I mean it was *a really nice kitchen* but everyone was just wow about just being able to put the coffee in and turn the dial and then get really good coffee - because if Bunn does nothing else - the coffee they make is really good. (I think a lot of the diner coffee rep is due to the glass carafes sitting on burners all day and getting burnt. Getting coffee out of an insulated carafe is like fresh brewed.)

Her mother, sister, and I all waited, fascinated. It is all about recipe. It is a flat bottom just like all the other flat bottoms out there. Kalita Wave, Ratio, etc, all use similar brewing method. You have to dose and grind such that your extraction % is within your preferred spec. The only things this particular Bunn cannot do is pulse and potentially you may not be able to set a specific temp very easily if at all. Bunn shower heads do a great job with proper saturation, and the small outlet hole ensures a decent brew time with the correct grind.

You are talking about the carafe. Yes, turn it off the carafe heater when you're done. They make excellent coffee by brewing at 197F which is optimum for less bitter oils being extracted. Bunn did a lot of testing many years ago to determine the optimum temperature. The tank stays heated and ready for the next pot.

I consulted for Bunn Engineering years ago. One thing they did early on was to do a LOT of testing to determine the optimum brewing temperature. The tank is kept at 197F on all their brewers. I know because I designed the first electronic thermostat they used in their big institutional machines. At 197F, there are fewer bad oils extracted so the taste is less bitter. They are well built machines, as noted by others.

I've used one daily for a decade (longer if you count office coffee). I've never used the manual on/off burners. I brew in 3 minutes then transfer to a thermos for the day's supply. My previous machine was the 9-cup OXO. The Bunn is not programable the night before, but it does brew a better cup of coffee in every other way. I buy good beans & grind right before measuring my dose. It is as good or better than every drip or pour over I have ever made. I'm not a coffee professional but the Bunn makes a very f'in solid cup of coffee if you follow the basic rules. Buy fresh whole bean, grind your own, only make a full pot and don't cook the coffee after you brew.

It'll make mediocre-to-okay coffee for a long time I'm sure, but if you want a drip pot that is certified to make a quality cup of coffee, then you'll want to refer to the shortlist of [SCA-certified drip coffee makers](https://sca.coffee/certified-home-brewer). They can be pricey and they're really only worth it if you want to get the most out of your coffee. If you like coffee like that, great!, But, if coffee is just a vehicle for caffeine (like how it is for most people), then the Bunn you posted will do the trick just fine.

I get it, and I do agree with you. I drink a LOT of coffee. I drink a whole carafe myself in the morning. It only takes about 10 minutes for the machine to heat up the water, so I don't leave it on all day. This machine belonged to my dad, who ran a diner in the 80s and brought it home with him when he left. My parents also drank a lot of coffee, so it worked out pretty well in our household. I used to have a 4 cup percolator and I did like the coffee better in it, but over 5 years I had two break beyond repair. The Bunn has been brewing coffee almost daily for 40 years.

FYI, there's a seal in the bottom of the reservoir that tends to go bad on these. You won't know until the counter is covered in water. If and when it happens, or just replace it now anyways, BUNN is awesome about replacement parts (this part specifically I got for free).

I own a commercial Bunn made entirely of stainless steel that I never expect to replace. Bunns are generally BIFL in my opinion. They are designed to be in constant use and you can still readily get any part you need to repair them. The main exceptions are the cheaper "residential" versions which or mostly plastic and don't have the same replacement parts availability. I had two of them and the plastic heating tank (yea, bad idea) melted on both of them. After that, I bit the bullet and bought an OL-35 which is not only built like a tank, but has a [retro-cool look](https://www.wasserstrom.com/restaurant-supplies-equipment/bunn%C2%AE-208200002-ol-35-automatic-coffee-brewer-with-1l---1u-warmer-465079). The A-10 is one of the "middle of the road" models that are much better than the residential ones but without the industrial construction of the higher-end ones. They have more plastic parts where the higher-end ones have stainless steel - for example, the basket, the front panel trim, and the top lid. Being a commercial-grade machine, they do have good repair parts availability though. For residential use, it will likely last a lifetime. Great find!

Yeah, no. A Bunn coffee maker, keeping water hot around the clock with occasional energy draw costs less than $3 per month. Their rating is a little over 800 watts, but that's only when actively brewing. That's half the watts of a hair dryer for a similar amount of time. When not actively brewing, a Bunn uses 3-4 watts of electricity. The myth of the Bunn energy draw persists.

Bunn coffee makers are the best. They're all we've used for 40 years in our house. We've never had one last less than 5-10 years, depending on how hard/mineral laden the water is.. with soft water, they'll last practically forever. Whatever temperature Bunn designed the hot water tank setting for, it makes for great tasting coffee. A few pointers \-Mind the burner switch (pot heater) though - if left on too long it'll overheat the coffee and make it bitter. A hour is about the most you'll want to leave it on for. \-There is no water control on that machine. You can't fill the empty pot at the sink, then pour the water into the machine, then put the empty pot under the basket in time to avoid a mess. *Bunn makes a plastic water container that is very helpful for filling the machine once it's ready to brew.. betcha the parents still have it - worth finding it*. Or use a separate, spare coffee pot to fill the machine. \-Taller filters do work best. we find 4-5 heaping (and I mean heaping) Tablespoons of coffee per pot is perfect. Filters that are too shallow will result in wet grounds overflowing the filter and winding up in your pot of coffee. \-The only failure we've ever had with Bunns like that A-10 is the silicone gasket between the top water tray and the hot water tank. When fresh water is poured into the machine, clear water will leak down and out from around the base of the machine & onto the counter. The gasket is super easy to change with just a screwdriver and 10 minutes of time. When it would happen to ours in the past, we'd call Bunn and they'd ship us a replacement silicone gasket free of charge. Each time we did that simple repair, it gained us a couple-few more years of use with the machine. They're the best. You'll really like it, and considering they are costing well over $150 these days, you really scored with that one. Cheers.

Okay, how many cups do you want to make? 1 cup- Aeropress, but it is plastic and will eventually wear out or hario pourover. If you need to make 2-3 cups there are plenty of great siphons brewers like hario, it will last as long as glass lasts. If you need more than 3 cups Moccamaster or bunn for home depending on your budget. Hario also makes an amazing coldbrew maker, I can't explain why its better than no name brand ones but it just is.

Vintage Bunn Pour-O-Matic VPR 666L coffee maker (from 1985 I believe?) Bought at a thrift store for $13 without the decanters. All it needed was a deep cleaning and a new plug for the power cord, and it works perfectly.
I know this post is a bit old, but my parents have had one of these since the early 90s. We use it multiple times daily, usually making at least three pots of coffee. They tell me it has needed repairs only twice.

At my electricity rates, it comes to about $2.50 per month. I'd be willing to wager that this is within 10% of any coffee maker that has to continuously re-heat the coils before the water gets warm...lots of losses in letting the coils cool down and then re-heat them. I might even assume (without evidence or proof) that the net energy usage of my machine is less than your Moccamaster. But I'm not going to bet on it. Taste is subjective of course, I've not tried coffee from a Moccamaster. I will say the BUNN makes "serviceable" coffee...better than a Black & Decker 20 dollar drip machine, but I'm not going to write letters in praise of it.

I've gone through 4 coffee makers in 20 years. I'll never switch back from my BUNN home version of the commercial drip machines. Literally NOTHING fancy about it. No clocks, no digital displays, no alarms, no timers, no motors for grinding, nothing. Just two mechanical 'on-off' switches: carafe warmer and water tank heater The water stays permanently heated, so every refill just 'pushes' the already hot water through the basket. It takes less than a minute for a full carafe every morning because you don't need to wait for the water to heat. It's only a good option if you drink coffee daily, because over time the water in the tank will slowly evaporate (I've found you lose about half a carafe in a week). But I do drink every day. Water tank is not removable, so that doesn't check your box. It does take any filter or basket you've got, so that does check your box. Water fill is at the very front and it's generous in size, so that's a check. Induced carafe has anti-drip spout. Width is 7.5 inches. Depth is 12.5 inches. Height is 13 inches Uber cabinet, but the front water fill cover (which also doubles as the 'activate' switch) needs 3 inches additional vertical clearance to open. This thing is rock solid, mostly because there's no electronics to go bad. It does one job and does it well: make a very hot pot of coffee very fast every morning.

Bunn speed brew. Have had mine for 5 years. No signs of slowing down. I have also worked in multiple restaurants and every one had a Bunn coffee maker. I am also a little bit of a coffee snob. And outside of a mochamaster or a pour over coffee, the speed brew makes the best coffee I have had.

I got my husband a Bunny several years ago, which I think was ~$90. It's awesome. Coffee in like 4 minutes is awesome. We run vinegar or citric acid through it every few months to keep it clean.
