Women’s BIFL trench coat
Trenchcoats weren’t invented to be waterproof but waterabsorbent soo much that before the wetness got to you, you’d be home. If you want a waterproof coat look elsewhere. If it needs to be a trench. Burberry mix 90’s my best second guess. I own one and it’s super. Just not waterproof

Looking for purse recommendations!
I have 20yo vintage Coach and Burberry that look as good as the day I bought them. I have Fossil and Lonchamp that have just surpassed the 10yr mark and both have held up incredibly well. Louis Vuitton leather, not canvas, just celebrated 5yo.

Is this Baracuta G10 trench coat BIFL?
Agreed on avoiding polyester for BIFL, but military surplus trenches are usually cotton gabardine not wool - still way better than poly though. Check out vintage Burberry or Aquascutum on eBay if you want the real deal

Cashmere and merino from J.Crew and Banana Republic cause irritation. Should I try higher-end brands or look for alternatives?
I mean, I'm nearly an old, so I've seen a few brands come and go, and frankly, I don't think there are any clothing brands I can recommend BIFL at this point. There are certainly vintage pieces from legacy brands I can recommend, such as a trench from Burberry or Macintosh. For sweaters, I'd recommend vintage Pendleton or Pringle.

BIFL is about quality not the brand name.
The main point is: many high quality well crafted things became famous and that's how brands were built. In most cases theres not a brand magically appearing with low quality items. I admit often quality declines if they become too famous, but that's niche. The other are small artisans that usually are not available everywhere rsp known only to locals. One example from the fashion world: Burberry started to make Trenchcoats for the UK military in WW2 - they protected in bad weather, were durable, people used them also after the war and more and more people bought them. They also offered service and still do - they did restored mine after 30yrs - and that's why they finally become famous and a worldwide renown fashion house. Doesn't mean there other apparel is as long-lasting or the fancy coat in silk, but... Or Victorinox - they became famous bc of their quality and service... I might get a high quality handbag from a local artisan in Florence - but what does that help someone abroad?

My 2025 BIFL products this year, how about you?
Wera 1/4” wrench set and 2 screwdriver (1 ratchet). Burberry duffle coat cotton/rabbit fur and trench coat cotton/reindeer leather trim. De Buyer carbone plus frying pan. Liebherr fridge. Replaced all my batteries with Eneloop rechargeables. I helped my parents choose a Miele washing machine this week to replace a Samsung. I went ‘round to fix a worn gasket and found it had worn away because the drum was warped. I didn’t bother trying to find out why the drum was warped. Oh I also found a Knomo leather bag for my mother.

Wool Overcoat Suggestions
Second-hand Burberry off eBay. There are 100% cashmere ones too. Edit: you WILL have to buy your wife something too though.

Wife wants a high quality leather purse for Christmas (NOT “luxury” brands)
Agreed. Mulberry and Burberry are both quality and have that staying power without the over logos. Those are my go to for big gifts. Coach and Kate Spade are okay, but definitely fast fashion with not the best materials these days.

Vintage Burberry is it BIFL
If it's still in good shape, yes. My dad had one he bought in the 70s. By the 90s we were using it to lay between us and the concrete driveway when we did oil changes on the cars. It still didn't tear until the 2010 or so.

Vintage Burberry is it BIFL
I’d consider it a great buy at that price. Depending on how much use it has seen, and will, it certainly can be bifl.

What purchase made you smile more often, maybe without meaning to?
My Burberry overcoat. Rabbit fur lined including the hood. I’ve spent the last 6 months looking forward to it getting cold enough to wear again! It’s easily my favourite possession.

BIFL, but also BISecondhand. What are some things that everyone should keep an eye out for, but can commonly be found for cheap when preowned.
Day 2 of an estate sale is my version of going to Disneyland. This past weekend I got a Burberry trench coat for $40!

Looking for a stylish overcoat that will go the distance
I have a Burberry I purchased in London in 1976. It's a true overcoat/trench coat with a zip in wool liner and looks as good as the day it was purchased. Hauled it around the world as an expat for many years and still pull it out during rainstorms and when winter arrives. In hindsight, it was worth every penny I paid for it almost 50 years ago, but currently it's priced at just under $3000. If you're looking for style that is too much money. If you are looking for style and workhorse you will wear for the rest of your life and leave to a grandson I think it's cheap.

Good Long Trench Coats for Men?
Thanks. I will have a look. Usually the brand that everyone mentions when it comes to trench-coats is Burberrys, - they look amazing, but they are very pricey. Other option is always second-hand.

Women's suits - Professional Job
It might depend on your size but if you take your measurements there are so many you can find of fully natural materials on places like eBay. For example: I just searched Burberry suit on eBay and there are a ton of wool, linen, silk, or cotton for under $150 which plus tailoring might be cheaper than one you could buy new. I don’t have any new store recs but this is what I usually do when looking for lifetime pieces.

Unpopular Opinion: "BIFL" as an excuse for overspending
Not everyone here is from the US. I was curious, bc I realised later in life that most of my things are BIFL I only replace when something breaks and often with the same brands. I inherited a lot and use it up to date - so when I inherited a Miehle Washing Machine, that still is fine after 30yrs, then that's something I can recommend. Same with eg my grandfather's writing set - sure I get hundreds of pens for the price of a Montblanc, but a) it's a lot of ressources and b) not as nice. I live quite minimalistic - we move often transcontinental and everything we own fits in about 10 suitcases. Btw: with clothes - it really depends - many nowadays so highly sought after luxury brands were just "good shops" with a very high quality and good service for me as a European - I bought my Burberry Trenchcoat in 1993, it's a classic, it's absolutely always a good choice and in 2023 they refurbished it for me: destitched, cleaned, new pockets bc there were holes, new impregnation, new buttons amd buckle - only one of several examples
