Best winter parka money can buy?
I wear the Canada Goose Trillium Parka along with a Smartwool base layer on very cold days (Chicago suburbs here). Had days of 20 degrees below zero a few years ago and the hood was very effective at keeping my head warm (fox fur lining). Layers are your best friend and look for quality- you need not spend and arm and a leg but there are better brands out there. I have an Eddie Bauer down jacket that I still use and I have had it since 1994 when I was a freshman at the University of Illinois. Best coat ever 😀

Best winter parka money can buy?
I live in NYC and just bought the Canada Goose expedition parka. Everyone told me that it is going to be too warm blah blah blah. Its been perfect. In 10-20°F with wind chills it keeps me warm while I just wear a T shirt. I can wear a sweater under it and still be cozy, venting the jacket for 30 seconds every 20 minutes or so to keep comfortable. Any colder and then ai just dont vent the jacket. Any warmer than 45° F I wear my Canada Goose chilliwack bomber with a lower thermal rating. They're still great quality compared to 99% of winter coats, just not as goated as they once were.

Did the same before this winter started with my Goose Parka (sold it) because I couldn’t add a couple layers inside, it was a size large which I typically buy but I think the parkas fit better true to size, and just wearing a light sweater underneath doesn’t cut it outside the mall. I went XL with a Goose bomber jacket which is a totally different fit, sleeves and such feel pretty much the same but as others have recommended… layers are the key. So a little extra space does wonders, and I find moving about in a bomber jacket so much easier even with a much thicker sweater etc.

Wool coat for the Northeast
You need to examine what kind of coat you want for the temperatures. It gets really where you are so there are a few styles that can work well: 1. Technical jackets with down insulation - Think canada goose, Fjallraven, Patagonia, and Rudsak. These jackets can last a long time if you buy their higher end jackets. Over time you might find wear in the seams and you can bring it to a good tailor for repair. My gf has had hers for 15 years and its still going, I see small wear and will bring it to a tailor sooner or later. 2. Wool jackets - Wool is a classic coat but will not be as insulating as your down choices. There are many styles of these coats that range from a peacoat to Filson style Cruiser jackets - Schott, Filson, Stormy Kromer, Weatherwool. These jackets last a long time and keep you fairly warm and theyll hold up just as well as the technical jacket but theyre a different style. layering is a must with these jackets IMO when its brick outside. 3. Shearling style jackets - These jackets offer a similar warmth to the wool jacket and relies on wool and leather. Certainly a different style for the Northwest but itll keep you very warm. Being leather, its the most expensive choice if you go with genuine sherling instead of polyester and cotton. N-1 Deck are a style of sherling jackets are very warm and you can find them from Buzz Rickson, The Real McCoys, Iron Heart. Schott also sells different styles of shearling jackets that you should look at Golden Bear is another company that does Shearling. All of these jackets can last a long time with enough care, the technical jackets needing the lesat amount of care to the wool and then finally the shearling which requires the most care. I think you have good choices and when it comes down to it, its about price and style. Used models of all the above are found on marketplace to ebay to grailed/depop/vinted.

What is your 2024 Black Friday BIFL pick?
Most recently i picked up another canada goose vest- but before they changed over to CG. Snow Goose is what they used to be called. Found a barely used one for 50 bucks, and 15 shipping. Near perfect condition even though its many years old. Super warm, its great quality. I bought a different snow goose one on there that had a very tiny paint mark on the back for i think 30? maybe 40? it was very cheap. Either way I have put a ton of mileage on that one over the years. Not a single issue. You can find a lot of great stuff on ebay- is there anything in specific youre looking for and i can give you an idea of what id search for. I've picked up lightly used shortwave radios for a fraction of the cost, or they were missing a charger that was cheap to buy. Granted radios are not BIFL but solid ones can last a long time, and paying 50-80 vs 150-200 for it is a hell of a bargain.

What is the warmest down coat for under $500?
As a jacket hound, owner of way too many jackets, there are 2 ways to go about this. A very heavy duty super warm jacket like you are referring to (like the north face McMurdo parka, Duluth trading Ruffer Puffer, and of course others in higher price ranges). These are very good options for very cold days - if you live in the north, they are smart to own (even to keep in your car for those bad situations of getting stranded). The warmest single layer jackets are heavy compared to high performance gear which is geared towards higher activity and need for flexibility (skiing, snowboarding, climbing, cross country skiing). Whereas the super heavy/warm single jackets are great for a football game in December in Greenbay or Chicago, standing on the ice ice fishing for hours, being at an outdoor Christmas market for hours in the cold and windy, of if you walk a mile or more to work in a cold windy city like Chicago on a frigid day). The weakness of the single layer extra warm jacket is that on many days it is too warm for the jacket. Like running errands when you are in a heated car or indoors for much of the time. That said, I have 4 ultra warm jackets - 2 Canada Goose Parkas, 1 - 800 fill Mountain Hardwear jacket 20 years old and should be replaced), 1 - Arc'teryx Rush down jacket (wearing today in the teens). I spend a LOT of time outdoors, even when it's very cold (-20 to 10 degrees out). In these Temps, these parkas cannot be replaced by layering for a combined total cost of $1,000. That said, for more active cold weather activities, the layering approach is the way to go. Then I like the following - mountain hardware Monkey Man fleece (get the square inner pattern fleece vs. a solid/smoother inner layer fleece), Patagonia for a mid weight down layer OR Arc'teryx for a synthetic down layer, and then a hard shell layer that has some sort of soft inner layer for added warmth vs. just a straight hard shell (that is really just a more rugged rain jacket). Then you also can look at soft shells vs. the hard shell as the outer layer on nice non precipitation days (even though manybsoftshells have a DWR sprayed on finish, they are not generally waterproof.

People love to complicate things with "layering" when you're only going to be in the city. Who wants to wear a base layer to go to work? Unless you're being really active outside, I find it cumbersome rather than helpful to have layers. Canada Goose / Moose Knuckles have great parkas. They are truly BIFL unlike what others say

I live in Toronto, Canada. For -10° to +5° c, I wear a Carhartt jacket and layer underneath. Anything -15° c and colder, I wear a Canada Goose parka. My CG parka I’ve had since 2018. Have had a CG bomber from 2009-2017 but grew out of the style. It was still working well and just decided to hand down to a cousin. I would really stand behind that CG (precovid) are BIFL items.

I’ve had a bomber for 17 years Which I recently sent for a life time warranty repair. Completely refreshed the jacket, new zipper new cuffs, button snaps and down filling. Good for another 17 years. The warranty is exceptional, even applies to second hand garments. I say buy lightly used and save money as well as have the piece of mind that you can repair in the future. Win win

I inherited one from the mid-2000s and have used it in temps down to -25F with heavy winds. It's warm. It's comfortable. It fits well. But there are lots of alternatives for less, or better quality for their prices.

I have one of their bomber jackets for over 10 years and it has never failed me. On the coldest days it’s plenty warm even with just a t shirt underneath. On milder days you don’t feel like you’re overheating at all. It was a splurge purchase but worth every penny. Winter in Winnipeg I wouldn’t be caught dead without one. Probably go for the full length parka while you’re at it.

Check out down jackets on 1688, Taobao, aliexpress, and so on. The ones that look like north face and Canada goose jackets (similar design but no logos/badges). These are high quality, thick fabric, down filled, and available for like $200. Will keep you plenty warm. Personally, I prefer a separate down puffer and shell. Easier to clean separately and I can replace one or the other if there are issues.

Very much worth it, although not the only option available. I am very much not a parka person (much prefer a wool coat), but after 10 years of Edmonton winters I finally caved and bought a CG. My rationale was that while I hated spending money on garments I dislike aesthetically, since this purchase was necessary, I wanted to get something that had the lowest cost per wear possible. Which meant buying something that was … okay … looking and also long lasting. That purchase was over ten years ago, and it’s still going strong.

Absolutely. Bought my first bomber 12 years ago. Used it aggressively for about 5 years and it started tearing up. I sent it in for warranty and they replaced it for free, with a bigger size (I gained some weight). The replaced jacket carries the warranty.

I like the look of Canada goose coats especially with the fur trim, plus they (idk if it’s all models or just some) have back pack straps so u can still have your coat secure to your body but without wearing the sleeves on your arms but all my life I’ve worn north face puffer jackets growing up in the pnw which have been good for cold weather, rain, and snow (when paired with a heavy coat or a thermal) I’ve heard good things about arcteryx but I’ve never owned one ETA: my current north face jacket my parents bought for me in middle school and I still wear today :) also I think they have lifetime warranty but idk

Down is the magic material you're looking for, with a waterproof shell on top. I like REI storm shells and LL Bean down layers as separates. Patagonia down sweaters, jackets, vests also popular. Cotopaxi down, very hip, nice stuff. For an all in one parka (less flexible but convenient if you're mostly house-to-car a lot) the Canada Goose parka is well made and very trendy for, like, a truly excessive number of dollars. Somewhat amused that the magic chat genie can't find you a popular jacket for a midwest winter.

In all seriousness: Canada Goose, if you've deep pockets Patagonia and Fjallraven are not as expensive but can still get a little pricey. Fjallraven products are warranted for life. Ok this isn’t really the same. But Canada Goose. Not the fashion ones, get the warm one. I’ve had it for twenty years. And it’s absolutely incredible. I once grilled on my rooftop on manhattan on a blistering cold night wearing sweat pants, a t shirt, and that jacket. It was so cold that the beer froze in the neck of the glass bottle when I went to drink it. I was perfectly warm(yes even my face because of the crazy wolf fur hoodie). Thing has been an absolute tank for me. And it’s somehow not unbearably hot when you’re wearing it even though it isn’t negative 14 outside.

While not cheap Canada Goose, they have an unlimited lifetime warranty with no receipt required. If it tears get a new one, if the zipper breaks you get a new one. My thought process is I’d rather spent 3x what I normally would on a coat if I can exchange it for a new one as long as the company is still around.

Best down jacket BIFL?
any ultralight just seems to be asking for failure. I love my RAB but i almost never wear it anyplace beyond around town, becuase i am afraid of ripping the fabric. Also is the nano Puff even down? As overkill as they are for almost everyone i would say a Canadian Goose would last lifetimes. How heavy of a jacket are we talking.

Warmest, most durable parka?
As a Canadian who has lived in the Yukon (one of Canada's northern territories), trust me Canada Goose is WARM! I regularly wore my CG parka in -40 degrees and felt fine. They are pricy, but they do not disappoint in what they promise to deliver. I would advise that if you don't want to pay full price, try seeing if you can buy one second-hand.

Canada goose parka. I bought it 12 years ago for $800 CAD and worn it every winter and it's still holding up great. Now the exact same parka retails for like $1750 CAD.!

In need of warm winter coat with a budget of $350-400
I bought one of those used Antarctic Research Program surplus Canada Goose jackets from AmericanaPipeDream.com for that amount. It's pretty beat up (definitely used), but it's already been through the worst and is proven to withstand the worst temperatures on earth. I have other Canada Goose jackets, I don't like the new ones without the genuine fur on the collar, but I've been absolutely blown away and satisfied with them. I've lived in the northern most areas of the central midwest for majority of my life and it's changed my perspective of what tolerable temperatures are. -30° or -50° (before factoring wind-chill) are a common occurrence for at least a few weeks during the year. Even on those days I can still walk from my office to the store for lunch without it phasing me. If the surplus jackets are a little rough for you, Canada Goose has a [Generations](https://generations.canadagoose.com/) website sells very gently used variants of models that have been traded in. I really recommend shopping there, the older the better with this brand, it's a bit **too** functional for the fashion crowd that's started to identify it as a luxury item.

I have a Canada Goose and Lole parka - both are wonder garments in terms of keeping me warm in frigid Chicago weather. Having to put on and take off multiple layers sounds like a huge annoyance and nightmare to me. I 100% prefer a one and done coat (+ hat and gloves of course if needed).
