Why does everyone say Duluth Trading makes the best underwear?
As a long time Carhartt rugged flex wearer, they are about half the quality of the ballroom bibs. I highly prefer the denim as I don’t like the pockets in the fire hose ones I bought. I’m very particular as I keep everything in my chest purse as my old lady calls it.

A few brands I'll probably stick with for life
For me patagonia is hit or miss. Bought a sweather last month and it's already pilling. The same sweather but a different colour and full zip is still going strong after 3 years. A couple of brands I do like are Carhart, Meindl ( German brand for hiking- and work boots), Fjall raven which i know is also hit or miss for some, Felco pruning shears and the Dutch brand/store Hema for basic shirts and such.

Dickies, carhartt both have good ones. I would look for a pair of dickies from 5+ years ago though, they seem to have had a swift downturn of late. I just went to go pick up a new pair the other day, same as the ones I already have allegedly, and there is a massive difference in quality and thickness.

Older carhartt pieces (2010s and older) are quality. You can find plenty of them 2nd hand (and occasionally NOS (new old stock)/deadstock) online and in thrift stores if you're lucky. Only issue is finding pieces that aren't ridiculously overpriced, but those are typically the very popular models like the Detroit style jackets.

Alternatives to Filson
I would personally ignore the mountaineering gear. What about carhartt? The level 3 gets down to -20 and the level 4 is arctic qualified. They don’t have a full length parka for sale anymore and the gray market is bleak (I am hunting for one myself). It’s for what you described; outdoor chores, farm work, car or field work. The Yukon extreme jacket is a bit longer than most jackets and is my current one I use. The parka is about 3 inches longer but same warmth.

this is what i do ...layering...i start with boxer briefs and under armour knockoff from amazon...then i put on a union suite...carhart makes the only one i use..not horribly expensive but rugged waffle ribbing....then i put on the next layer..for fishing and hunting its a quilted bib....for work i put on a pair of lined jeans or cargo pants and a fleece lined lumber jack shirt...then 1 or two pair of merino wool socks......for vests and coats...i usually put on a vest then a coat and that depends on if i am going to be outside a lot or just commuting to work...layering is bueno.

I work with truck drivers, and their boss puts a lot of thought into gifts. My personal favorites are: Yeti coffee mug, that's 4 years old and is stained on the inside, but otherwise perfect 2 different Stanley water bottles. They're not my dailies anymore because we got a bigger off brand water bottle that I prefer. Carhart winter coat. 2-3 years old and seriously the best thing I've gotten. RTIC lunch box. Some, but not all... Carhartt does this for some stupid reason; 1.) They'll make a model of their clothing in the USA, but SOME of them will still be outsourced. I was looking at there bibs(the R01-M) at an Ace Hardware. Most of them were "Made in USA with Imported Components", but on that same rack some of them would be "Made in Bangladesh" 2.) They stopped advertising any and all "Made in USA" clothing as if they just stopped careing. I own several B01 double-fronts, and all are Made in USA from the store recently, but the website has been saying "Imported" for years. This is the case with all of there stuff. They don't even put the little sticker on there US Made beanies anymore.

My bought the Sherpa lined duck, the copper busted and I got a hole inside the sleeve within 3 weeks. I sent it back… they’re made in Indonesia now. The crappy part is I bought a dri duck jacket to replace it and it’s a much better looking jacket but nowhere near as warm so I’ll probably be ordering another Carhart.

For a traditional hoodie, the Champion Reverse Weave is king. Very heavy duty, great fit, wears like iron. Flat out amazing. The most versatile hoodie around. Perfection. If you just want warmth and comfort, without any style whatsoever, the Duckworth Powder Hoodie is crazy good. It’s not very resistant to wind, but is otherwise super warm for a garment so light in weight. I put mine on in October, and take it off in May. Absurdly comfortable. I’ve tried American Giant. It’s as well made as the Champion, but it’s just too oddly shaped for my liking. Not designed for humans. Arborwear makes the heaviest and toughest hoodie, but beware of the hood. It’s designed to go over helmets, so it’s HUGE. You’ll need 5 hats to take up the extra hood room. So heavy it’s really only for very cold outdoor use. The Flint and Tinder 10 year hoodie was a major let down. It’s just a medium weight hoodie, like your average medium weight Carhartt. Total scam. If you don’t mind 1/4 zip, the Carhartt Rain Defender Loose Fit Heavyweight Quarter-Zip Hoodie is outstandingly solid. Somewhere between the Champion and the Arborwear in terms of weight. The extra mock neck collar keeps you super warm when the cold winds on winter kick up. This is an amazing hoodie for winter.

Yes! Also, Google for a list of the oldest companies in whatever product type. Then choose whatever country’s product you’d like to buy and that is in your price range. DeWalt was established in 1924. Carhartt in 1889. People who buy these do so for the quality and probably buy them for life. Lagostina was founded in 1901 and are easy to find at Canadian Tire. My pot set and Dutch oven still looks brand new. Kikuichi is a Japanese knife company that began around 1267. They started out creating swords for Samurai. They still retain their traditional craftsmanship but were adapted for creating quality kitchen knives. The price can be about $200 CAD. But you can pass it down to your children if you take care of it.

I wear scrubs to work. Carrhart has held up quite well so I would likely repurchase. On my days off, I tend to wear athleisure for to and from physical activity and while not truly bifl, I have some 20 year old Lululemon items in rotation. I love trying to find new old stock. For footwear, Clark's have held up well but eventually the inner cushioning and sole breaks down. For people who have resoled shoes, what do you do about the internal cushioning and arch support?

Look, it ain't fashionable. But Carhartt's are BIFL, and my duck jacket got me through some really tough winters. Have owned mine with heavy use for 8 years, and you would think it is new. Wife bought a Sherpa lined one at the same time and it looks the same way. My dad has one similar for the last 15 years, and, while a bit more worn and rough looking, he treats it terribly and it still does the job. To many layers that actually aren’t insulating won’t keep you warm. While layers are great they all need to be heated up to function yet without an outside insulation you end up just losing the heat. No cotton coveralls will insulate. If you don’t like sleeping bags, then a snow suit or selk’bag will work much better with a blanket or quilt on top. Where are your cold spots? Also if you near your home you can also get a portable heater…

I’ve owned both and was not impressed all 4 pairs I bought ripped on the seam at the crotch within 3 months and when I contacted Duluth about fixing them they told me to beat it. I haven’t bought anything from them since. At least Carhartt will consider fixing and most of the time actually does fix.

you may want to look at carhartt. They have some very heavyweight items. The do have womens line as well. They have full coveralls and bibs as well. I could probably just have my underwear underneath and be in snow with them. Milwaukee has heated clothing. I know these are not the most feminine choices but you can stay warm.

I live in Toronto, Canada. For -10° to +5° c, I wear a Carhartt jacket and layer underneath. Anything -15° c and colder, I wear a Canada Goose parka. My CG parka I’ve had since 2018. Have had a CG bomber from 2009-2017 but grew out of the style. It was still working well and just decided to hand down to a cousin. I would really stand behind that CG (precovid) are BIFL items.

Layers are the key to warmth. I wear a Carhartt as my exterior layer and fleece zip up for inner layer. Has served me well for 15 years.

I agree with you OP. I also agree with all the people explaining why handmade things are so expensive. I do wish the commonly available options, from popular or common brands, were still decent quality, and not made of plastic and purposely designed to fall apart in a year or two. It can definitely be hard to find middle of the road options, between the $30 pants that need to be replaced every year, and the $200 dollar hand made in Japan options. I find a lot of times paying $75 for something I'm still unsure if it'll fall apart in 2 years anyway. The best solution I've found is used or vintage. A lot of old made in America stuff was fairly impressive, and can be bought fairly affordable. I love wool, so the first examples I can think of are Patagonia, LL Bean, Pendleton, Carhartt, Woolrich, Johnson Woolen Mills, Filson, but there's a lot of others. I've found I can often find vintage clothes, that look like they were hardly worn, for $20-$100 dollars and wear it for ever. I think companies like this are proof that it is possible to make clothes for the masses that last 30 years. Companies now just choose not to. I guess the answer you're looking for, OP, is greed and capitalism. :)

Wtf are you talking about. I have 10 year old $30 carhartt Shirts,10 year old $50 carhartt sweaters and $100 jackets I work in that are still in fine shape. My $30 jeans last for years working in them. I dont pay over $50 for any clothing except insulated jackets which last forever and maybe a hundred for shoes that last for years.

I mean I don't like the fit or aesthetics, but quality wise I've had great luck with old Navy and Duluth trading company, oh and Carhartt is good quality too (again not a fan of the aesthetics and they don't sell stuff with curvy fits though). But that's what the friends who are in trades and a lesbian who need to use gojo as her default soap due to sheer quantity of engine grease from hobbies recommended to me....

Looking for a good quality winter coat
I know this isn't what you asked for, but just something to consider. If I am moving around a lot and moving from indoor to outdoor a lot, I find that layers are much more helpful than a big a coat. Just something to consider. My favorite mid layer is anything that uses polartec's grid fleece technology, a lot of different brands use it, but the most popular is probably Patagonia's R1. This combined with a some kind of shell (I personally use Outdoor Research) is very warm. That said if you are just set on a thick winter coat, I like my Carhartt.

I’m with a few of the others here- I’ve never had a backpack strap break when wearing it in both shoulders. With that said, I’ve got a Carhartt backpack I’ve been lugging around for no less than 6 years that weighs between 45-55 lbs depending on what I’m toting around. Similarly I used to have a plain old black Jansport that held up for a long time and only got replaced because I wanted to extra pockets and compartments the Carhartt offered.

Carried it all through college and still use it as my edc/mobile office between my day job and my handyman side hustle, so it sees everything from books/binders and a laptop, tools, and I use it as a carry on when I travel. Looking for a good quality winter coat
Northern Maine resident here. I have a Carhartt Super Dux hoodie that seems to be my staple. I've only been here 4 years, and have a few winter coats in my closet. Carhartt, Columbia, and North Face. I also have a few vests to go underneath. I really like the Columbia one, as it has a reflective pattern on the interior that reflects heat back into me warm space. The North Face is the most waterproof of the four. The Carhartt jacket is untested as I got it at a yard sale over the past summer (brand new and I only paid $5, retail it was over $200). However, my North Face vest and this Carhartt hoodie have gotten me through the past two winters. I deliver pizza so I needed something easy on and off, while still being in the elements for like 20 deliveries a day. My actual winter coats all look brand new because they live in the closet. I may donate one or two to a cold looking person while on my routes this winter. I recommend an insulated vest as well as a good jacket. From inside out, you want: - moisture wicking layer to pull sweat away from your body - insulation layer to trap your body heat - outer layer that is wind proof and water proof To truly stay warm, please add: - a good hat. Your body will sacrifice a lot of is heat to keep your brain warm. A good hat will make the rest of your warmer. - insulated, waterproof boots. Make sure they are insulated. - wool socks. Not crappy 10% wool, but at least 70% there is no substitute - for me, gaiters are a must. Zip up or snaps (Velcro always wears out first). I'm in and out of the car so often and driveways and parking lots are just slush pits, so having a simple solution to keeping the cuffs off my pants and my shoes dry is vital.

You can get a Duluth or Carhartt work coat for $100-$130. Duluth also has excellent sales Black Friday weekend. You probably won’t beat those for durability. They’re worth the extra $50.

Carhartt Loose Fit Firm Duck Insulated Flannel-lined Active Jacket. Try one on, but you'll probably find that you should size down. Pair with a hoodie and it'll keep you warm through just about anything you'll see in the US. It'll go about ten years before the sleeve cuffs start fraying. Carhartt's fleece neck gaiter is also essential. It's dirt cheap, lasts forever, and will keep your neck and face very warm.

Carhart. I have 3-4 zip up hoodies, and 2-3 coats. my red coat is pushing 20+ years old, my black one is 5 years. the hoodies i have are 7+ years. i dont use them for work just to wear in what winter OK gets. the heavy coats come out when its very very cold which is only a couple days a year.

Field & Stream is decent for the price, but it’s not really a true *Buy It For Life* brand. Their gear is made mostly for casual outdoor use — fine for light hiking or everyday wear, but not built like Filson or Carhartt. The **Epoch** line uses decent nylon and stitching, but it’s still more of a “good value” than a lifetime jacket. If you just want something affordable that looks nice and holds up for a few years, it’s solid. For true long-term durability, **Carhartt** or **Duluth Trading Co.** are safer bets.

It's a usage case kind of thing. Jump Suit (carhartt)--you wear the zip over coveralls, generally over other clothes--it's a work suit but it's cool for snow mobiling, shoveling the driveway, working outdoors in the winter or spring--you will guage lined or unlined. Overalls--try them on, generally just underpants and your t-shirt under that, buy it to fit length wise--be prepared to perhaps tailor them (they run a bit long). I've had both (overalls and coveralls) for well over 30 years (same suit and overalls) Sure they are worn!

Black Carhartt jacket. RIP the arms off. Splatter it with bleach. Take a shot of whiskey and then Jack&Jill down a hill. Walk back up the hill like a Bushwhacker entering the squared circle. Repeat: Shot, jack ,bush until the bottle is done. When you wake up DON'T wash out the pee and puke stains. You need to then chain smoke a pack of cigarettes while chugging Pabst Blue Ribbon. The chugging is important because you'll get some run over onto the vest. That combined with the smoke will give it the vintage smell and patina. For the patches, I dunno. You do you.

Some of what you list is spot-on! Come on back in 5 years and report. Can't speak to cat litter boxes and I own different cook ware but heck I inherited my grand mother's Revere ware and it's just working fine (among cast iron). Own Danner boots for decades (same pair). Have Carhartt coveralls for decades (same suit/overalls). Dishrack I have is just wood for 40 years. No idea who made it.

I’ve unfortunately had about 4-5 pair of Wranglers retro slim straight wear out in under a year each. Always in one of the back pockets a big tear would start down side or top of the back pocket. I love the look and feel of wranglers so I kept replacing them for a while, but I now exclusively wear Carhartt. They are still holding up well, had them for two years so far. Both those wranglers and Carhartt are $75 (too much) but at that price I think Carhartt wins in comfort and durability and function.

Mushroom hunting pants?
Those are motorcycle jeans, they're going to be heavy, stiffer than regular jeans and very hot. My pick is still Carhartt double fronts in rugged Flex fabric. I still have a pair from 5 years ago, using them to clear brambles with a strimmer and they're still fine. They're also thick enough I can wade through brambles without getting thorns in my legs, and they don't snag. Not waterproof but nothing is if you're off the beaten track. That's what I use for mushroom hunting. If you want something that's not work wear, fjallraven make poly cotton stuff that is really tough and can be waxed for water resistance

Long-lasting shirt and pants for wood cutting work
Carhartt has/had two product lines. Their cheaper line everyone wears with things like thinner stretch fabric, and their more expensive line using thicker non-stretch fabrics. If you go to an actual workwear store you'll probably see ones a lot more like your old stuff.

Carhartt still makes good stuff, but any of their pants in the rugged flex line don’t hold up at all. Go for the duck cloth. The firm duck double front pants and bibs are still made in the USA and hold up well. My job is hard on clothes, and carhartt is still worth the money for their classic stuff. The new full swing jackets are nice too.

I’d be interested in an answer to this. In the UK/Europe there are two arms to Carhartt, Carhartt WIP (Work In Progress) and Carhartt. WIP is the fashion brand whereas the other stuff is the longstanding workwear. I wear a lot of the workwear stuff as a carpenter and it’s still pretty good, my main issue has been the zips failing, every other aspect has been pretty consistent. The double knee pants are as tough as ever.

I used them for work in a warehouse, the breast pocket comes in handy, and I personally like that they fit kind of loose. For anyone curious, I'm wearing a Carhartt shirt right now, and it has all the features he mentioned. Tale from shoulder to shoulder (not the twill style), and double stitching along the front. I think that thickness is important. The cheap shirts you get for five in a pack that you can hold up to the Sun and see through, are not necessarily going to last long. But good thick shirts like Duluth Trading and Carhartt will generally last a long while.

Actually I have! I went to Kohl's and bought t-shirts and polos in their Sonoma store brand. These were all in the $5 - $10 range. The polos are on their 5th year and the t-shirts are on their 3rd. They all appear to have many years left in them. I bought some Carhartt pants last year to replace my 20 year old Levis. I don't believe those will last as long as the Levis, but they still look brand new after 1 year.

That is true for some light drizzle or a brief shower on a walk, but waxed cotton is not going to handle rain or any significant volume of water for any length of time with wind or anything else moving it, because water will come in through the seams. Try it on a bicycle to get the point pretty quickly. A big step up from that at 1/8th the price is something like the Carhartt Storm Defender series, DWR coated nylon, redundantly waterproofed.

You won't find the answers here. When it comes to jeans redditors are usually like "yo, you only want to spend 150 euro for jeans??? You can only buy some entry level jeans and no guarantee they last more than a few months. Go with 500 euro Japanese jeans". For real tho - Levis and Carhartt have treated me well so far. Levis have tons of different models tho - some are good, some are on the level of Zara and Bershka. One pair that was surprisingly good was Uniqlo's 100% cotton jeans. Not amazing but for the price they lasted plenty of time and always looked good.

I've had good luck with Carhartt and American Giant. I don't love the AG material as much, because it's just way stiffer than I was expecting, reminds me more of a "duck" canvas jacket, but both have held up really well. If AG puts out a solid, saturated navy in their OG hoodie, I will snap it up, but the gray one I have is great.

I have another non rain defender one i’ve worn on free time 3-4 days a week for 6 years now that looks pretty much new. I’ve tried all the other brands you mentioned and much preferred carhartt. Model’s gonna depend a lot on your foot shape and what exactly you’re using them for, but since there’s not much else to go on, this is more of a brand suggestion than a specific pair. You could try Carhartt for something classic and sturdy, especially if you're used to heavier boots. Keen utility has a bit more flex in the sole, so they’re solid if you’re walking long shifts. Or go with Nortiv 8’s, more under the radar, but decent balance between structure and comfort. Cushioning holds up over time, and they’ve got enough ankle support that you wont feel stiff. Honestly some of the more niche ones outperform the hyped-up brands, especially once you hit the 15k+ steps a day mark. You should pop into a workwear or tactical gear store too if there’s one near you, sometimes just trying a few on tells you more than a hundred reviews. I dont really need much stuff in my wallet. As much as I try to be old school and keep my emergency cards with me, I dont need to. Which is why I buy front pocket wallets, even if i dont keep them in my front pockets 30% of the time. They dont put as much bulk when youre sitting as a fold wallet does. The Carhartt, even with all the slots filled is nearly 50% slimmer and lighter than the fossil.. which is to expected when you subtract the magnetic moneyclip and leather from the the equation. It just feels substantially cheap compared to a genuine leather wallet.

I have two jackets and a set of coveralls of similar age. All been through hell working on the farm. Farmers and construction workers wear Carhartt kind of like armor to protect themselves from crap, grease, dirt and sharp things even when it’s warm enough to go without it. I have a 20-ish year old Carhartt jacket that is faded on the shoulders and upper back from the sun but still dark under the arms. Hate to guess how many hours you have to spend wearing a coat to have it fade from sunlight.

In my experience some are shitty some are great. I’ve had good luck with carhartt wip chase ones. They use the better high weight cotton. Other ones were quite bad so I’d check the fabric weight before ordering. I found that the ones made in Bangladesh usually have the best quality. I order them second hand through Vinted.

Carhartt - was cutting down a tree wearing their lined overalls. The chainsaw slipped and went right into my leg where upon the overalls protected my leg from getting mangled. (Update) Creating my own waxed clothes

The one down side which is kind of a big one is that you can’t wash them. I used my Ozone bag I have for hunting to clean them a little. This is not an industrial Ozone that would hurt the cloth in any way. It’s just a little residential version of an Ozone machine.

Actually Durable Clothing
A year of walking will wear out the soles of any normal boot with rubber outsoles. Metal would last longer, like horseshoes, but that has other issues (weight, low friction, damage to what you walk on). So shoes for humans are typically foam or rubber. Anyone saying their boots last more than a year with original soles is probably not wearing them much (or is just very light). Boots that last long can be resoled. There is a ton of information and misinformation about this topic. My suggestion is Jim Green footwear, by far the best on the market considering their quality and cost and also ethics as a company. Best US-made option generally are Thorogoods. For clothing, as noted - washing and drying makes a big impact. Duluth and Carhartt are certainly decent - there are more durable options but these should last a while if your washing and drying is fine.

The one aftermarket thing that still moves the needle for me in all vehicles is the Carharrt premium seat covers. An hour or two to install because they are so f'n fitted, but really durable and has cutouts / flaps for all the things.

Bought 5 pairs of Duluth flex pants at Christmas. It’s currently April…. One pair has weird waves in the material. Wavy spots are getting worse every time I wear them. Another pair has an issue with the zipper. It won’t stay up. You can zip the fly, take a 5 min walk, and the fly will be open. Take a big step, yep…. Flys open…. Squat, yep…. Flys open. The other pairs are ok thus far, however I’ve made my mind up. I’m going back to carhartt.

Vintage clothing store owner here! It seems legit, but the best way to tell is to feel the material. Is it thick or thin? Check the stitching, is it fraying? or does it seem solid? Check the logo. Are the letters well placed apart and even? Or are they far apart? However, my personal recommendation (perhaps I am a little biased!) is to purchase an older or vintage model if you can. Carhartt have significantly lowered their quality, and an early 2000s or even 90s piece will be considerably better (and a lot cheaper!). Yes, they are used, but they generally have a lot of character, and are much better built. Hope that helps!

Why is my Allen Edmonds belt falling apart?
Because it's crap? In a store full of belts to pick from, I've found I typically have to go to at least 3 different stores to find one actually decent belt. I don't mean style or fit. I mean basic construction. I buy that belt, and then I wear it for a decade or more because...it doesn't break. Right now I'm rocking a Carhartt one, and that's been solid for a few years.

Commercial brands that are actually a bit worth the price?
For t-shirts I can say this: \- Carhartt WIP - average, good option if discounted \- Carhartt workwear - even if worse than used to be K87s are probably my top 2. I have about 10 of them, each washed at least 50 times and mostly keep the color but the shape, collars etc are still as good as new. Great option for 25 eur \- Selected - they had a line of oversized, thick basic Ts (with pocket or not) for about 40 eur. They hold up great (including collar, seams, etc.), look great. Worth every cent \- Next - great look, quality, very thick etc. but.... collars are they worts I've ever seen. All wrinkled and stretched after 1st wash. You can't even wear shirts/hoodies over them as it's super annoying. Some models are also shorter than other brands. Was supposed to be a hidden gem but turned out to be dissapointment \- Uniqlo - good option for less thick Ts - they hold up nicely. Only some of them ad bit twisted seams after few washes (which always happen with lightweight Ts) \- Zoo york - bit short for, average quality. Not worth the price \- Dickies - got a bunch of lightweight ones. Some hold up decently, some started looking bad fast. I wouldn't pay more than 20 eur a piece \- Weekday - very good option. Hold up nice are are still inexpensive I also tried a bunch of popular zalando brands like Esprit, Pier One, Jack & Jones, United Colors of Benetton, Tom Tailor, Redefined Rebel, Zalando Essentials etc. and they're allright options to buy in multipacks cheap that you can wear couple times with shirt and then use for gym or whatever. Maybe except Tom Tailor which is total garbage For shorts I strongly recommend Uniqlo Linen Blend - by far best shorts I ever had For Hoodies I'm actually looking for a good option myself. Recently tried Volcom (used to be amazing, now total garbage), Carhartt WIP (very good quality but big pricey), Timberland (average), Uniqlo (good quality but they fit odd, and seams don't look that good), Dickies (thick, huge disappointment, loose color, shape, peel off like crazy). I need to buy sth and considering Carhartt workwear or Fallen zip hoodies but entirely like how they look. Patagonia, Armada, Arc'teryx don't have any nice zipped models. I heard some skateboard brands still make good quality hoodies (except Volcom for sure) so maybe I'll dry DC but I don't love the look either...

Men's Everyday Pants under $100?
I've been a fan of my carhartt pants. I avoided the distinctive colored ones, so the black/khaki/etc ones I got feel like they fit both in the office and out on the trail. Note that ordering online direct from their website will get you best results, other retailers can be hit or miss with quality.

Winter jacket recommendation
Do you want down or synthetic? Eel you be standing around or active? Just day to day stuff or are you outside often? Something like the carhartt Montana would be a great bang for your buck if they go back on sale for $70over the summer again. Since winter is basically over what ever you go with I would wait until the spring / summer sales kick in.

Uniqlo basic tees and their selvage jeans are good everything else is sub par quality. Muji has better quality shirts. Charhartt wip are pricey but worth it. Work boots. If you can afford redwings those are amazing. If you cant, wolverines are good intro boots. Ive had a pair for 10 years and counting ive only had them repaired once. Watch I chose a seiko automatic not too expensive but reliable easy to maintain and relatively stylish. As someone that walks as a main mode of transportation there are NO BIFL sneakers/shoes so buy whatevers comfortable and just trust that youll need to replace them after a year (or 2 max) and since everyones foot is different youll need to find a shoe that you have tried before buying. Rain coat columbia is the best IMO. North face is literally the heaviest out of the rest. Patagonia is OK but theres something about it im not comfortable with. Backpack. Waxed canvas. Just remember to check the wax on it regularly. No specific brand in mind its more of the upkeep I have literally 20+ different insulated tumblers ive only used 2 on a daily basis. One is a standard 22oz silver one with no paint coating. Its all beat up but it has character and since it doesnt have paint my ocd doesnt get triggered. The second one is an old hydroflask back when they were just starting and not a money grab company they are now. Its an open top cap one for coffee. Lunch box, zojirushi lunch jar. Yes this is pricy but as someone who is well in his 30s and brings lunch to work this is awesome cause it keeps food hot for 8hrs (warm till 12hrs) ive had mine since college. This thing is pretty indestructible im pretty sure it would out live me. Also since im also part asian zojirushi rice cookers are built to be handed down generationally. Right now im out of what else to recommend but let me know if youre looking for a specific item ill let you know my thoughts on it. Yeah other people would recommend the best most expensive but on an actual practical level im a pretty safe bet to ask.

You’ll need a second jacket for that I’d say. When you look at the fabric for Carhartt and Dickies, once it gets a good level of grease or dirt, it rarely washes out without still leaving dark spots. I’d suggest getting a used Chore Coat for work use and find something else for leisure.

Certain carhartt options are higher end and cooler looking. Filson maybe. There’s also high end designer brands that I’m sure people can post, I forgot what they were If I wanted functionality, I’d want a hood. And I am outdoors daily working in all seasons. The price on the high end stuff is so silly for what it is that it’d be hard to justify for something that might get fucked up. That’s why I’d lean towards carhartt for the overall prqcticality. You gotta decide between fashion or function I think, because the fashion coat for 500 bucks willl get muddy and ripped up being used in a heavy duty setting

Looking for a spring/autumn jacket to last me 5+ years, somewhat on a budget. What worked for you in the past?
I got the Carhartt Rain defender line jacket and really like it. Not super cheap, but I got it on sale. I got a dark blue bomber length without the hood so it doesn’t look especially rugged or outdoorsy. And it’s fleece lined so it keeps you fall/spring warm, or with an additional sweater mild winter warm.

Wolverine vs CAT work boots?!
The Wolverine boots I've worn before sucked. They fell apart in 6 months. I get Carhartt CMW6220's. The insoles suck, but they will last me a year before the tread wears out. Swap out the insoles and they do well. I'm not a plumber, but I do work at a Wastewater treatment plant. Lots of walking on concrete and getting them wet.

Long Lasting Jeans for Mechanic
I've used Carhart carpenter pants and they last a long time. Made of heavy duck fabric. I've had some pairs going on 5 years, and only lost one recently when a medic had to cut it off me. And that hurt more than my injury. They should last longer than 6 months unless you're subjecting them to unusual wear, like walking around with an engine daily. But I haven't noticed any holes even where my knife or phone is carried, while normal jeans wear a hole within a couple months.

Looking for leather belt recommendations
I have a solid bridle leather strap and brass buckle from Carhartt that has been very solid, and at $35, the price is right. I think the main thing I look for is a solid piece of leather, not glued or bonded stuff. Also avoid 'reversible' belts, they are usually 2 pieces of glued thin leather. The buckles are also junk. I don't like buckles that are sew on, rivets or solid snaps are best, even if you never plan to change the buckle.

Yes it is true- quality clothes are harder to find.
My partner got some hand-me downs from his dad this past Christmas. Some... carhartt pants I think. My partner liked them so much so he went out and bought his own pair. Same type of pant, same size and everything. The new pants are definitely lighter and not as "heavy" as the old ones. They are still nice and comfy but you can tell the quality has gone down a lot.

Do you think BIFL is actually cost effective?
I bought a belt by hanks belts 9 years ago. It was $56 at the time. Still looks like new. I bought a full grain leather wallet by carhartt 10 years ago. It’s aged perfectly after being in my pocket daily. All the stitches still good. My wife buys genuine leather because she likes more options for style. She’s gone through belts every 2 - ish years. She also likes her wallet to be built into her phone case as it’s less to carry. These also tend to break when you drop your phone. I bought a 4Runner 10 years ago, too. Minimal maintenance required. She wanted a Hyundai ionic 5. It’s had some issues with the 12 v battery that I had to fix. I’m not faulting her for any decisions. She likes what she likes. I’m just arguing that bifl tends to have less issues. While sometimes bifl doesn’t benefit your financially, it benefits you in time saved. Cars absolutely should be bifl. I’ll run my 4Runner into the ground. Steel hangars. Certain pieces of furniture should be quality such as your bed, office chair & couch. I think dove tailed drawers in your dresser/nightstand make sense. I think full grain leather, thick oiled canvas &/or steel should replace plastic when considering buying something you intend to get a lot of use. Doesn’t always cost a ton more but saves you time, reduces risk of injury/pain & makes life simpler. Long story short, even if it doesn’t save money… in my book, if you can afford the extra, it’s worth it.

If I buy something cheap and it breaks I’ll usually replace it with the next level up. I do this every time with most things. Clothes usually aren’t worth paying major money besides carhartt workwear. Cheap jeans usually last me as long as high end ones. Tools I try to stick with Milwaukee because I’m already in the system. Hand tools are all harbor freight with the same warranty as snap on for most things. Kitchen stuff and household items I usually go with the concept of electronics fail after 5-10 years. Cast iron is forever. Dogs and kids destroy furniture but ymmv. My next major upgrades will be bedroom mattresses last for 10-15 years for a good one bed frame can be forever and same for dressers For me I really like the concept of upgrading when needed until eventually everything turns into bifl

Vevor, oddly enough everything I've gotten from them has been solid. Knipex products have been great aswell, but generally too pricey for what they are. Dixxon makes solid flannels, but they're also just way too expensive for what they are. Anker makes pretty decent electronics, but they don't sell parts for any of the things I've grabbed. Next Level apparel makes pretty decent shirts (they hold up to battery acid, welding sparks, normal sparks, and general wear) Carthartt is still alright for pants, if you buy directly from the website. Otherwise, everything else I've found has been trash. Timberland and brunt have proven pretty decent shoe wise. I really wanted to like wolverine, but I can't get their boots to last more than 5 months. Smith still makes decent helmets, but I prefer the petzl ones. They're fall protection equipment is also pretty solid. Benchmade for pocket knife, but victorinox makes very nice kitchen knives. (Their Swiss army knives are meh to be fair) Cat still makes half decent equipment, but their generators are garbage. Kohler generators are way better. Speaking of, kohler faucets are dogshit, but their toilets are still half decent.

It seems like the Flint & Tinder waxed trucker from Huckberry is exactly what you're looking for. Though honestly, if you like the Carhartt, go with that--I grew up in the land of Carhartt and while they were standard equipment for many trades (such as oil extraction) they were also the basic standard of any outdoor recreation. I struggle to remember someone who hunted, fished, serial-killed, or photographed birds without a Carhartt.

What are some good work pants for men?
I stick with Duluth Trading Co. and Truewerk for work pants. They fit well, aren’t too baggy, and actually hold up. If you need something tougher, some of the slimmer-fit Carhartts are solid too. For long-sleeve shirts, I go for moisture-wicking ones like the ones from Ariat or Under Armour... good for layering and they don’t fit like a parachute.

The Heaviest fabric cotton t shirts I've ever had. The neckline is about an inch of collar/hem and they look a whole lot less out of shape than t shirts I own the same age. I would not agree they are less durable than Carhartt tees but they are more expensive. I've had my oldest one for 4 years and it looks the same as the ones I just got.

I like Duluth Trading’s Flexpedition pants for work. They’re not too loose, have some stretch, and hold up well. For long-sleeve shirts, I’ve had good luck with the Carhartt Force line. They fit well without being baggy, and the material is breathable but still durable.

Yea, I gotta say, my Carhartt was like a 1/10 of the price, keeps me super warm, and has survived fires, dog bites, mine work, stabbings, car accidents, tree work, and sundry other shit in the past 20 years I've had it. Only thing keeping it from being more presentable is the cigarette burns, which is why I got another one 10 years ago (courtesy of the county).

Carhatt Work Trousers
That name sounded familiar, and I just checked mine: I have those, too (assuming you typoed "Carhartt"). I bought a Onewheel in summer 2023, and inadvertently stress-tested my trousers twice that year: once on a concrete sidewalk, and two months later in a gravel driveway. Both times it abraded the outer surface—similarly managing to mangle my flesh more than the fabric—but neither so badly I didn't keep the trousers in service. I've been very impressed with mine, and have four of them in rotation at any one time.

List your 3 favorite BIFL items and at least 1 regret or fail
1. Carhartt duck jacket. I’ve had mine 30+ years. It’s stained, faded, and frayed at the cuffs, but just as warm as the day I got it, only now with lots of memories. It got me through a series of physical, blue collar jobs during college and grad school and looks like it. It’s had regular use for decades and likely washed more than 60 times. I have no idea if the newer versions are as durable. 2. Any good set of USA made drill bits WITH a sharpening lesson from a machinist or a drill doctor. I’m a prolific DIYer and used to buy HF or Home Depot drill bits and sets, then throw them out when they got dull. A friend steered me straight a while ago and I’ve been using a couple old sets of USA made drill bits that I got off eBay for much less than a good quality set from HD for years. It’s a snap to resharpen again and again once you get the technique down, effectively making them last forever for most non-professional users like me. 3. A big box store Olympic barbell set with a simple squat rack. This is another item I’ve had for almost 30 years. I bought the set during college and set it up in my parent’s basement. It’s moved with me a few times and now my wife and kids use it regularly. The plates are rubber coated, which has prevented any rust from forming on the plates, so they look and work just like new. 4. Bonus: wusthoff knife set. They stand behind their products. We’ve had a set for 20 years and occasionally send them back for free repairs when the handles eventually break. For maybe $25/year a local sharpening service keeps them cutting as good or better than new. If they’re too expensive for your budget, find a cheap set at an estate sale and learn to sharpen them yourself or find someone local that can do it for you. Fail: Calphelon lifetime warranty pan set from Costco. I’ve been trying to get warranty repairs to those things on and off for a year (just for the principal). The company warranty portal is a piece of crap and Costco won’t allow me To return because the purchase was more than 5 years ago (this part doesn’t seem unreasonable).

In need of warm winter coat with a budget of $350-400
A used Carhartt Sherpa lined jacket does the trick for me. For lower half, it’s a set of Dang Tough socks and flannel lined jeans. The thing is, if a parka isn’t keeping you warm, you might want to consider layering more effectively.

Carhartt heavy is the only way to go. Not the medium, the heavy. Harder to find but they do have them on amazon or on the Carhartt website. My husband is particular on his hoodies and he's hard on them, Carhartt heavy is all I buy him now. That's a lie, I do get him fruit of the loom softspun occasionally, but that's the brand the locals all use for their marketing hoodies and we like to support them. They aren't bad though and very soft.

I don't know if these guys are considered "BIFL" around these parts, but my husband has two pair of heavy duty Carhartt pants that have been going strong. Gusseted crotch, thicker material, and they appear to be quite solidly stitched. He wears them pretty much exclusively for 80% of work related stuff and they seem to be holding up very well over the last 5 years.

My first American Giant hoodie
I wouldn’t call it an apples to apples comparison honestly. The AG is a full zip with reinforcement from the wrist to the elbow and it’s an athletic fit so it looks good. The Carhartt rain defender is a pullover loose fit workwear hoodies and isn’t made by US workers so it costs less.

A Carhartt balaclava/insulated face mask might do the trick, especially if combined with a hood for extra insulation. When it’s that cold, especially if it’s windy, your face can get numb very quickly. I spent two winters in northwest North Dakota and lived through some bitterly cold days. A beanie would not have been enough unless paired with a gaiter, which is another option but they don’t always stay in place well.

Alaskan here. I just use a cheap carhartt beanie. The hood of your parka is more important. I wear a fjallraven parka, but my boyfriend has a kavik that he loves. Fur around the hood is necessary. It was -35 here today and I wasn’t uncomfortable.

My first American Giant hoodie
Not to sound like a brand schill but I truly love my carhartt rain defender hoodie. It's basically the only jacket I've worn since 2017. I'm on my third one only because I got a lot smaller over the years, but all three are doing just fine. Only complaint is that the black fades a decent amount, but you can juice it up with some rit dye if needed. I have considered the AG hoodie but the carhartt is just too good all around to switch up, especially at double the price.

Zipper pockets might be the hard part. Carthart has some great hoodies the heaviest material and best quality sweatshirt material I’ve seen in years- and u just got one that is even waterproof.

I'm also 6'3 and I recently bought 2 jackets that I am absolutley enjoying. The Carhartt detroit jacket in XL-Tall is breaking in nicely and actually fits. It's really a great fitting and functional jacket.

Carhartt jacket fits the bill of you get true duck. I'd skip the Detroit and go with the one with cuffs and a hood and the active swing. Also don't buy it online, or if you do, go through a work wear specific store. They make two lines, a fashion one with lightweight materials, and a work one with heavyweight materials. I tried buying their stuff online and it's half as thick as through my local work wear store.

Redditors, what do you regret?
That's weird. My bf has a pair that he wears to work at a shipping warehouse literally every single day that's held up fantastic over the last 1-2 years. He recently got a second pair to add in to the rotation, but his firehose pants are amazing. He was previously going through jeans and even Carhartts like crazy. He recommends them to everyone he knows. Sorry you had a bad experience. Definitely hit up their customer support if you haven't already.

Another vote for Carhartt- I've had a pair of Carhartt's and a pair of TSC's store brand, and the Carhartt's are wearing much better. Just be sure to get them in the right size- the inseam's an inch too long for me on one of my pairs, and because of the bulk it's annoying.

I love Carharrt. Nothing keeps me warmer than the quilted insert Carharrts. Also, family owns a heavy duty road service mechanics business and are very very hard on clothes (lot of time sliding around on asphalt, sharp objects, etc) and the Carharrts seem to last longer than anything else before they completely fall apart. They are more expensive, but I believe they are worth it. I'm assuming you are asking for this winter, but if you go to TSC or similar store towards the end of Winter (Late Feb, March-ish) you can get some really good deals on these.
