1970 Rolex Oyster Perpetual. 55 years old and still runs flawlessly.
If it’s running flawlessly it’s been be maintained serviced regularly. Automatic movements aren’t flawless by design and generally they are for people who don’t know much about watches. Grand Seikos, Seiko Spring Drives and the new Seiko UFA movement that doesn’t even lose 20 seconds over a year bests it in every metric. A very boring and uninspired watch choice. I’d rather wear a Casio G shock solar that auto updates daily and syncs to the atomic clock.

IMO the best watch on the market is any Casio Pro Trek with a crystal face, solar and multiband 6. They are basically gshocks with extra stuff. Always accurate, very tough and never need charging.

G-Shocks aren't really good value. You can get a perfectly fine Casio for 1/5th the price that will last you a decade before it even needs its battery changed, and the lower price tag is insurance against loss, theft or other failure the G-Shock can't protect against. The solar-powered aspect is a gimmick. The battery needs to be replaced after about a decade... which is how long a standard, cheap Casio battery lasts anyway. I know this isn't in the spirit of this sub, but if you're bringing your watch into situations in which it might get destroyed, the solution isn't a tough watch. It's a watch you can afford to lose.

Watch water resistance is stated as static pressure. A watch with a 50m water restance rating is only suitable for swimming. Iirc a 200m casio would be recommended for diving. Even then, I don't see the point of wearing one, I'd much prefer a dive computer.

Well good thing that Eco Drive watches charge from any type of light source then. Sure eventually the battery will need a replacement but I'm willing to bet its going to last longer then the main spring in that Rolex Not going to link anything but you can find early 70s quartz Seikos in perfect working conditions for fairly cheap, even 80s digital Casios are still running just fine

The thing with watches is that big brands are devided into big conglomerates(2 most important ones ino is Swatch and Seiko corp), this creates oligopoly that makes you pay $500(only at this pricepoint big brands get actually good) for basic watch with saphire crystal, and decent bracelet. Tbh only watches id buy from big brands are $20 Casios(Gschocks are just rebranded $20 ones with 5x the price). Take a look at r/chinesewatches, one of the cheapest actually good brands is Watchdives, but this is a deep rabbit hole.

Lots of people will be reccomending you swiss watches, truth is that they are manufactured in China and they are priced as luxury products(what they can get away with, not by the level of finishing, qc etc.) 2. For traditional watches above $100 take a look r/chinesewatches 3. Up to the Gshocks - only meaningfull diffirence between them and regular Casios is use of mineral glass, which may take longer to get scratched up. Outside of that they are the same. Preferably go for models that use EL instead of diodes.

I had a Casio--I think it was F91W--for many years. Eventually it got so the buttons wouldn't work, so I had to discard it. I bought another one exactly like it. I wore that one for years and then lost it. Now I don't wear a watch anymore, but if I needed one, that's what I'd get. BTW, in both cases, I replaced the default strap with a fabric one with a velcro closure.

Casio and Citizen eco drive are awesome recos. Another affordable option is any Orient Diver or Bambino. Like an Orient Kamasu. A bit pricier I’d go with anything Hamilton. Like a Khaki. More pricier would look at anything Oris or Longines. Like a Oris big crown. Or a longines conquest. Even more pricier would look at Tudor. Like a BB58, Ranger, or Pelegos. Any of those would survive generations.

You’re probably looking at either Timex or Casio. I have a few Casios and they have all been great for beater watches, but none of them have been subjected to serious abuse. I have a Timex Expedition that is over 25 years old. I bought it in Basic Training, and it has survived multiple deployments, hiking, hunting, etc. and still functions fine. Based on my experience, even though the Expedition is not marketed as shock resistant like the G-Shock, it has survived things that have caused G-Shocks to quit.

I totally get where you’re coming from — working in dusty, rocky places destroys gear fast. I’ve had a Casio G-Shock-style watch (a cheaper model) for years, and it’s been through everything — rain, mud, rock dust — still ticking. If G-Shock is out of budget, try Casio’s tougher models like **AE-2000W** or **MDV-106**. They’re not fancy, but they can take a beating. Just rinse it with clean water now and then, and it’ll last for years. If you share your budget, I can recommend a few solid options that won’t die on the job.

Main diffirence betwen normal casios and gshocks is marketing. Another distinction is that Casio includes mineral glass on gschocks, which technically is an upgrade over acrylic, but irl it doesnt really mean anything + scratches are puerly cosmetic damage. From experience smaller watches get scratched less. Id advise you casio f105 - thats f91 with upgraded el backlight, and the diffirence is huge.

The [Casio F108](https://a.co/d/7HNEBD7) only costs a little more than the f91w (which is great too) but has more water resistance and feels more robust. I wore an f108 for my whole Appalachian Trail thru hike, and then wore it for years doing construction, painting, and carpentry and only replaced it because I got nerdy about watches and bought a gshock and a couple “nicer” watches.

Casio A168. Straight up. I took one from the lost and found at work in 2012 and it still keeps time just fine. Maybe off by a minute or two over the course of a year. The case is chrome-painted plastic and it definitely accumulates scratches over time. Also the night light stopped lighting up after I had it for like 5 years. But it still keeps the time and date, and I have zero concerns about wearing it swimming or in the shower. And no, I didn’t steal it. I rescued it. If this watch was a missing person, it would have been declared legally dead by the time I took it, and we were about to close for the winter.

This is really the best answer. The Casio F-91W is the GOAT! Even if you have more money, it's the best bang for your buck. Accurate time keeping, light, durable, long life and cheap to replace if it every dies or you lose it. It's also unlikely to be stolen. The only reason I upgraded to the G-Shock Tough Solar is because I wanted a tide clock.

Came to say this. Bought one for $10, took me through a ten year military career. Never even changed the battery. Far more robust than any number of hugely expensive 'field watches'. Based on OPs need in the field, I might recommend springing for one of the models with a full backlight such as F105W because the backlight on the F91W is terrible, and there is no getting round that.

I bought a new Casio W-218H four years ago to see if I could wear a watch that was that big, and if so I planned to buy a G-Shock later. I found that it's smaller than most G-Shocks and is about as big a watch as I want to wear and certainly hasn't had any problems, so I just kept it and dropped my plans for a G-Shock. The 218 battery is supposed to last to seven years, at which point I can replace the watch or the battery - they're under $20. The visibility of the face - time, date, etc., is much better than the Casio F-91, and has a much better light button. Is it as durable as a G-Shock? No, but as I said, it hasn't given me a trouble.

You’re going to have a hard time finding a G shock for $20. The Casio F-91W is all you need, but does leave something to be desired for ruggedness. It will last forever, but is not nearly as robust as a G Shock. The F91W is arguably one of the best time pieces ever made due to its simplicity and iconic styling. They used to be about $15 on Amazon. But it appears inflation has hit them too and they are $22. That said, the Casio G Shock was literally designed to never break. The lead engineer was wearing his late father’s watch when the strap broke. The watch fell and was destroyed by the fall. He set out to create a watch that was indestructible. Thus born the Casio G Shock series. [Here is a link to the F-91W - at the time of posting, there is a used “like new” for $18.09](https://www.amazon.com/Casio-F91W-1-Classic-Resin-Digital/dp/B000GAWSDG/) If you can stretch your money a little bit further, the G Shock is probably the most durable watch that you can buy. It is $65 though. But requires a battery change every few years. Stretch that budget a little higher and get a G-Shock 5610. Radio controlled, solar charged battery. Last watch you would ever buy. It will probably outlive you. Both of these will be most tough, scratch resistant, and accurate than a expensive automatic watch.

Got my Ti-30, discounted as display model for $16, from a small town Sears store 49 years ago. I became so used to the key locations I couldn't use other calculators. Finally replaced it with 3 Casio SL-300SV solar calculators. Bought 3 so I wouldn't have to relearn different ones again. I still miss the functionality of Ti-30.

My mom had 2 of these solar-powered (they work even with indoor artificial light) Casio calculators that I found again a couple months ago at her place and was absolutely shocked they still work nearly 30 years later. Like these things never even needed a battery replaced and have been sitting in a dark cabinet for who knows how many years. And they just turned right on no problem.

If I was buying a watch for BIFL, I'd probably go with the Casio over the Grand Seiko though. Any watch kiosk in a mall can swap out the battery and gasket in 10 minutes. When your GS needs servicing it's off to Japan with it.

It's a tough call. For example, I can very much day that Revereware pans from the mid '90s are certainly BIFL, because my sets - other than the non-stick - are in nearly the same condition that they were on the day I bought them in 1995. ... and that isn't very helpful because they are no longer made or sold. I technically can't tell you that my Lodge cast iron pans are BIFL, because the vintage ones I have are no longer made, and the current ones that I have, I've only had for 5 years. Once they are properly seasoned and in use, I have a hard time telling the two apart, and they certainly seem to be BIFL. By the time we know something is BIFL, it's been out of production for 10 years, generally. And the entire point of BIFL is that we aren't buying a lot of new versions of these things to test. Like, literally, I could probably go the rest of my life without buying new pans. Having owned a Casio watch on the past, the problem is the bracelet and the battery. The bracelet parts tended to wear and stretch after 5-10 years, and needed replacement. For some reason, even when replaced by a pro, battery replacement seemed to be risky, too - the seals tend to get messed up. My dad favors the Black F91W, and has worn one for the last 40-50 years - but I think he's on his third. Part of that is because it's $20, and that means the watch is much more economical to replace than repair. A Rollex, on the other hand, is almost always more economical to repair than replace. So even if the bracelet was worn and needed repair, it is cheaper than a new watch by the price of a used car. If the watch needs servicing, there are experts who can get it working again. Oddly enough - the parts are an order of magnitude larger than the Casio's, and are much easier to work on. You can fix a spring or a jewel on the Rollex, you can"t fix a transistor or a trace on the Casino's chip.

My gold Casio wristwatch. I got it for ≈$60 (I know you said $50 but with sales tax it was $60) I’ve accidentally put it through the washer and dryer on numerous occasions. Digital display with month and day. Has s stop watch and a night light. Classic and stylish (I think I’m going to buy a silver one and black one just like it to match outfits) I get compliments all the time from the young “that’s a cool watch man where did you get it?” To the older generation “Nice Casio! I had one just like it/ I still have mine!” Still works just as good as the day I bought it.

Rolexes and other automatic mechanical watches don’t keep accurate time compared to durable quartz watches by Casio and the like. They have far more failure points and are more fragile. Not BIFL! Requires occasional maintenance at more than the cost of a BIFL sensible quartz watch. These are just jewelry to let other foolish rich people know you’re a foolish rich person.

Marathon watches - Are They BIFL?
If you want max functionality: get a Casio - el/diode backlight will outshine any lume/tritium and battery change costs just a few bucks. If you want small and bright go for f105, but assuming that you will be wearing gloves consider something with big light button at the front. Up to the strap - i ve had great experience with aliexpress item id 1005003401008701 (reddit doesnt allow links). Ps. When dealing with their cheaper stuff watch a yt review - sometimes they cheap out on the backlight. If you want analog field watch: 36mm is as low as it gets. Take a look at r/chinesewatches and r/microbrandwatches . Quality of mainstream brands went downhill over the years. Look for something with stainless steel case, saphire crystal, screw in caseback and preferably screw in crown(usually not included in quartz watches).

If you want something BIFL I would look at a watch with sapphire glass. The cheap Casio are great value but a lot of this watches get a scratched screen if you wear them daily. So Casio are great but some of them are not necessary BIFL. At the moment I am wearing a Casio LCW-M100TSE-1A it’s made of titanium, so very light, sapphire glass and solar powered. I recommended it. A bit cheaper there is the Casio Edifice EFR-S108D

Depends. Regular Casios go from 10-70 dollars. Their more premium brands (Edifice for sporty/office watches, G-Shock for tough watches, Oceanus for premium office watches) start at 60-70. I for one feel extremely satisfied with my 5600 and my recent purchase, the GD-350.

Brands include: Casio, Seiko, Oris, Rado, Mido, Timex, Vostok, Tudor, Rolex, Jaeger leCoultre, even a microbrand called Zelos. The other things I will happily splurge on are well-made raw denim jeans, leather jackets, waxed jackets like a Barbour, shoes (especially Chelsea and heritage work-styled boots eg. A good watch. Not a fashion brand one but one from a known watch brand like a topshelf timex or casio, Seiko, Citizen. It does not need to be a luxury watch. All of them will probably outlive you. Just change the battery every few years or let them be serviced if they are an automatic. Recently changed back from my Apple Watch and its amazing to not have to charge my watch and look for a new one cause the battery and software gets old.

A Casio G-Shock with Multiband 6 and Tough Solar. They can outlast you in an apocalypse, will keep running using solar or even indoor lighting, will set itself to the correct time using one of six radio towers in the world, waterproof until 200 meters underwater, has five alarms, world time function, stopwatch, timer, auto-light (when you move your wrist to face you, it will light itself up and if it recognizes there's enough light around you it won't bother at all). I recommend either the GW-M5610U for the small wristed or the GW-6900 for early 2000s flair.

How has no-one said a basic Casio watch? F-91 or a G-shock. I found my childhood Casio in a box in my Dad's garage when I was clearing it out a couple of years ago. It must've been there since the late 90s. It was still running. Other than a handful of battery changes through a lifetime it's surely one of the only true BIFL digital items. Saying that, my Fugoo bluetooth speaker is pushing 12 years old now and still works as good as the day I got it, despite plenty of outdoors time and not especially careful handling, so that's a contender. I guess the bluetooth protocol may be outdated eventually or the battery will die.... but not yet!

Victorinox Multi tool. Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen. Uni ball Kuru Toga Mechanical pencil. The pen and pencil both have decent built quality and they both are re-fillable thus increasing their life. Cast iron cookware - even the Amazon Basics ones are quite good. Casio wrist watches.

BIFL Automatic women’s watch?
Casio G Shocks are durable and reliable; automatic watches tend to be more finicky until you get into the higher end ones. As someone who works in watches the top comments all being seiko is mildly infuriating; seikos are phenomenal budget watches but most are not remotely BIFL without needing to be regularly serviced and have parts replaced from time to time. If you want something in that price range that you can set and forget I think that casio (especially the g shock line) is probably your best bet. I have an old casio in my watch box that I keep around for sentimental reasons and even years later it is still keeping the correct time within 1-2 seconds.

Unpopular opinion: AliExpress is great ... for some products, like simple metal items.
He got a Casio Duro for Christmas to make up for the total junk he got on accident lol. I also got him a Berny Titanium field watch in the sale last week, pretty good reviews on YT so I have better hopes for this one. Have not received it yet. He is really good at finding the good deals at estate sales before I do so at this point he has more watches than me.

What's the most expensive item you've bought with the intention of keeping it for life?
My f-91w watches and its derivatives are certainly not my most expensive purchase, but they will probably last a lifetime if I do not loose them. I also got the illuminator model, the w59 model (rated for water resistance), some more modern version I forgot the name of, and my favourite - the f-84w japanese market model which is a bit more like the actual original casios of the 80's.

My fitbit broke recently and I realized how much I rely on my watch. I got a $20 casio dumb watch while I figure out what kind of watch I want to get next. I like the heart rate and step counting from the fitbit but having the time on my wrist is the most important feature for me.

Casio WS-1600 digital watch. Has multiple, easy to use timers that can repeat. I often set mine to repeat every 20 minutes timed on the hour to help with my time blindness. Costs around $20 and lasts forever. It also helps me not burn down my house accidentally.

Thanks for all the recommendations! Gonna take me a bit to go through everything. A little more background- I wear a rolex datejust pretty much 24/7 since I've gotten it 8 years ago. I only take it off for the field work but keep on for gym, housework, some shop work, sports, etc. Its great but don't wanna risk it during the field work. When I first started about 15 years ago I broke a Casio Edifice and that's made me take watches off during the field work. I do heavy mechanical maintenance on wind turbines. Lots of grease, oil, solvents, impacts, grease, scratches, vibration, more grease. Since I have a nice and great watch I am not looking to buy another crazy expensive one. Not looking to start collecting. The Casios are a little over the top for me now as far as style. I like it to be just a single dial, not too distracting, or big. Something under 40mm, in the 35mm range. So far looks like Timex could be best cheap option. Bertucci, Boldr reasonable with Hamilton a little more. Vostok for the dark horse. And Sinn if I want to splurge.

So I guess your chance of breaking another edifice is low now. LOL I'm wearing a Casio W-217H most of the time now. It's dirt cheap, tough as a G-shock, also very thin that it'll slide into any sleeve. It's much more practical than my other G-shocks. I'm wearing it even when working on my car.

Going to be highly subjective as everyone has their own preferences in what they want out of a watch, so do your own research, but out of my collection Under $100 - BIFL choices would be Casio, G-Shock, Timex. You aren't going to find a good repairable automatic movement for this price new, maybe used. I love my swatches, really cute designs, but not built to be repairable. Under $1k - Pretty wide price range, at the low end you can get a good g-shock, citizen eco-drive, for automatics look at hamilton, tissot, seiko. A seiko 5 is the gold standard for inexpensive, durable, entry level, automatic watch. if you had to buy one watch today to start your watch journey, that and a 20$ casio would be my recommendation. Under $10k its almost entirely preference. You can get a good Rolex Submariner or Datejust for around that price, I'm personally partial to grand seiko, you can find a SBGW231 for 3-4k. Lots of options from pretty much everyone there, omega has the 57 chromosomes, brietling/iwc both make great stuff, cartier santos, glashütte but if you're looking for a one-and-done purchase as a somewhat non-enthusiast, just find a rolex you really like, make sure the movement is in good maintenance, and enjoy. There is a reason they are as esteemed as they are.

Casio G-Shock basic. Been wearing "it" since 2011. I've upgraded it three times, but you'd never be able to tell (they look identical). The first upgrade was for radio (atomic) time so it'd _always_ be exact, and the second upgrade was just because * DW5600E-1V --> $45, replace the battery every several years * GWM5610-1 --> 105$, solar (will still need a battery at some point, they degrade) and has perfect radio (atomic) time * GW5000-U --> $250 Japanese made version of the above with a screwback and a glass crystal For a mechanical (analog) watch, look for a swiss or japanese movement, and a sapphire crystal (crazy scratch-resistant). Hamilton / Seiko are good intros

low are going to be something like timex or casio. Weekender or g-shock models in particular. Mid is going to be something like seiko, citizen, bulova. High is watches like Rolex, Tag Heuer, Cartier, etc. Prices can be anywhere from $40 to $40k or more.

Issue with watches is low/mid/high could mean anything. A casio F91 is 13$ and will last you forever. A lange 1 will also last you forever, but thats $50k. And thats not even remotely as high as watches go.
