  What’s something you’ve bought once and never had to replace?

  No pictures--my husband is a Luddite and believes posting pictures on the world-wide interweb will steal your soul or some sort of Appalachian hillbilly nonsense. However--we are all roughly the same size until we are 50 and then we are roughly the same size again, only larger (thus the passing on of the suit). My mom wore it in the late 60s and since styles were shorter, the fact that she was slightly taller worked. It's been repaired several times by Chanel--a substantial amount of the skirt was replaced in the early eighties and frankly it probably only has another outing or two left. My grandmother spent a bloody fortune on her clothes and I spent the better part of my teens through my 30s doing scandalous things in clothes worth more than my car. I also have her tiara. It's a rather small one; but still. . . I used to wear it while cleaning my house because it made me feel fancy. A few fun facts about my grandmother: She was born in 1888 (we are "old breeders" in my family) and in 1904, being angry that her birthday trip to Paris had been postponed, she eloped with her equally angry nextdoor neighbor/life-long best friend. Why was he angry? Because he had just turned 21 and knowing his proclivity for loving others of his own gender, his father's will required him to marry in order to inherit. My grandmother bullied him into her plan. She continued to bully him for the next 70 years (although their marriage was annulled about 4 years later). My grandmother was married (and widowed) four more times. All 4 were named Robert and called Bob. They were fairly indistinguishable in looks and we always referred to them by number (Bob I, Bob II, etc). She was notoriously liberal. It was the deep south in the first part of the 20th century. No one ever called her on it because she had so damn much money and she'd fucking pummel you to death with it. She wore the suit to jail the first time in 1968 during a civil rights march. The magistrate refused to book her because she owned the bank that held his mortgage. She taught us about privilege from the day we were born. She named our privilege; we were rich, white, healthy, and well educated; and we were required by our God and our grandmother (who held equal positions as far as we were concerned) to speak for those who were voiceless. I think she would have been proud of me.

  In my family, we have "the suit." It was purchased from Chanel, by my Grandmother when she lived in Paris. Classic Chanel knit suit--navy and white. My Grandmother paid $568 in 1946(ish). She wore it until the late 60s when she gave it to my Mom. Mom wore it until the early 80s, and when I graduated and got my first corporate job, she gave it to me. Five years ago, I passed it on to my cousin's daughter when she passed the bar. The suit has been worn to every major event in my family. Weddings, funerals, court, graduations, interviews, jail (at least 3 times), and recently, the nfl draft. It's been back to Channel a few times for repairs--but damn. My grandmother was richer 'n God (an actual southern designation of wealth), but she squeezed every penny until it squealed. She would love this sub.

  What product would you seriously stockpile if you found out they weren't going to sell it anymore?

  I honestly wish you could register for your favorite products so they would notify you when they are about to become discounted! This way I would buy up every last one!! I usually buy multiples of my favorite products so when I finally need to repurchase them sometimes they no longer exist😔 I’m looking at you 👀Chanel lipgloss in my favorite color, Chanel Le Lift eye serum, and you too 👀Wild Berry shampoo and conditioner!

  What are some of the best products/brands you love splurging on?

  Many classic, quality French perfumes will last a lifetime. I've had vintage bottles of Chanel No. 19 dating back to the 1970s and 1990s that smell just as superb today. If properly stored out of moisture, light and heat, they will continue to last another 50 years. Many people discard perfumes after a few years. But so long as the citrus top notes haven't gone bad, and they're stored correctly, you should be able to keep a quality perfume for years longer than that. Perfumes with richer base notes (woods, amber, vanilla) will keep much better than those made with more volatile aromachemicals (citrus, some white florals).

  BIFLers, what things do you not understand why people spend their money on?

  Not that you want to throw good money after bad but try to steer her towards Chanel or Hermes if she wants a new bag since those hold their value.

  Would this be a good BIFL purse? Leather description on on the 2nd pic concerns me and I’d like your opinion.

  My fiancé swears by the Chanel double flap. It’s quite expensive, but it truly is BIFL and goes with everything. You can even resell it for almost no loss if you change your mind.

  Knives (and tools): Victorinox, Opinel Socks (as BIFL as socks can be): Falke, Monnet Many real luxury goods (many of those products count as BIFL) are made in Europe: Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Armani, etc.

  Womens heels? All purpose work/dress formal shoes.

  On the expensive side, but I have both Gucci and Chanel heels that I purchased in college nearly 30 years ago, and they are still going. Regular business use, and resoling every 7-10 years.
