  Looking for a hatchback car that’s not an SUV. We have a rav4 and looking to replace my ‘10 corolla. We have 2 large dogs.

  One of the Volvo or audi station wagons would be good. Maybe Volvo has the edge. V90. But I suspect if you have large dogs you might want to get a “taller” vehicle rather than a classic hatchback. Chevy volt with the back seats down is about the same size as your Corolla. Civic hatchback would be good too. But volt has about 50 all electric miles. 40 mpg on the highway too if using gas. Good luck! Also.. pet tax must be paid.

  I’m convinced 100% if you have a people mover ICE and just need a city car, a small electric is the way to go. But kind of my point with the Chevy is that we have the size & everything we need (it’s even uber fancy compared to the 25 year old car that we retired) in one of the smaller “basic” models, we didn’t need to spend 100k on a fancy top of the line with all the bells & whistles. It’s a huge QOL upgrade to have a 2nd car & for it to be electric, but it’s minimal the QOL upgrade from what we have to the top of the line version

  What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it?

  Hopefully my Chevy Bolt EV (knock on wood) Had the battery fiasco a few years ago with recalls and such. It's a boring looking car but fairly quick and 1/50th the maintenance of an internal combustion engine car. We always use it for trips that are within its range. Gas savings are great also.

  What is the equivalent of "Apple removed 3.5mm jack" of your favorite products ?

  We bought a 2026 Chevrolet a couple of months ago and they struck a very good balance that I thought I would gripe about: the infotainment only has one dial for on/off and volume, the rest is touchscreen, and the climate stuff is all buttons/dials. For infotainment, there are all of the other buttons (volume control, change source, skip song, answer call, etc) on the steering wheel instead - some on front, some on back. It has led to me having less time with hands off the wheels which is ultimately better than if they just stuck the buttons on the centre console. Pretty delightful change compared to our older car which wasn’t even touchscreen anything

  What is your most unintentional BIFL item?

  1994 Chevrolet Suburban. My parents bought it as a family hauler nigh on 30 years ago, and it just never died. No major problems, ever. It’s four-wheel-drive and it will pull anything. It sits in the background as a spare a fair amount of the time- but it’s probably the best car (in terms of reliability/durability) our family has ever owned. Fucking fantastic. Will never sell it.

  The best of both worlds is a plug-in hybrid. Get one that can run x miles on electric and the engine kicks in when the battery gets low enough. The Chevy Volt was one of the first like this, but other manufacturers are making them now. When I took a trip to Ireland my rental was a Nissan hybrid, you could operate it on battery around town, but the engine would kick in when you got over a certain speed. It also charged the battery on engine power. If you are only going to own one car, you really need to know whether you are only ever going to drive around town, or if you plan to take a road trip someday. Fully electric vehicles can be nice if you mostly drive them in town, but you have to plan any trip around charging stations and plan on stopping long enough to charge the battery. If you are traveling into rural areas you may not be able to take the most direct route. It is also more difficult if you live in an apartment or college dorm and don't own your own charger because you have to go somewhere to charge the battery and it takes longer than filling a gas tank. You also have to consider battery longevity. If you have to replace the batteries in your electric vehicle, it will cost far more than the vehicle is worth. No electric vehicle can be BIFL when it costs so much to replace the batteries, they will just end up in the junk yard until somebody figures out how to affordably replace the batteries.

  Actually look at Chevrolet's EVs. They're quite good, and drive like a conventional car, only better.

  If you are amazed by small TRUCKS, imagine the possibilities of small CARS like a Fiat Panda, Renault Clio, VW Polo, Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 108, Fiat 500, Ford Focus, Chevrolet Spark, Mitsubishi Space Star, Hyundai i10, r/fitinafit It is proven (sorry, no sauce, look it up yourself) that trucks have less usable space than smaller cars.

  Chevy Volt is a rare gem from GM. MK4 VWs with the 1.9TDI will outlive the earth, especially with the stick Mazda 3s seem to go for a long long time. Skip this one if cars rust in your area though. Hybrid Ford Fusions

  I think my Silverado 2024 2500 gasser will get me 20 years. These trucks are rocks. Lots of electronics though.

  I've been a passenger in my friend's Model Y once. I've also driven a C7 Corvette. No contest. I hate Elon as much as anyone with a conscience, but those motors can MOVE. It's probably the closest I'll ever come to a rocket launch with the amount of g-force you're under while it's accelerating. The fact that we were on a dark road while it was snowing only amplified the space-travel vibes 😅

  What’s one item you bought that has lasted for YEARS and was worth every penny?

  2002 Chevy 1500HD 6L I bought this truck probably 6 years ago. Low miles, hail damage. I’m honestly tired of it and I do want a newer truck some days but this thing does everything I need it to perfectly. I can afford to buy any truck I want with cash and as a tax write off for my business but I just can’t fully justify it. The more I learn about newer vehicles the more I feel I need to hang onto it. I honestly feel that this truck can do more than newer trucks because of the freedom I have not needing to care about the paint job or floor mats. It can seat 6 It can go anywhere It can go fast It can haul anything (in the last year I’ve pulled my FJ40 on a tilt deck to the mountains, a skidsteer/tilt deck, our camper, elk). It keeps me humble as it’s old and ugly.

  Large SUV BIFL Request

  I'd take a look at the 2025 Chevy Tahoe with the 5.3L V8. However, if your typical trip is over 30 minutes or so, then I'd opt for the 3.0L turbo diesel. Base is roughly $60K.
