  Backpack suggestions?

  Check out mission workshop. Another one you could check out is Chrome industries. Spendy stuff but they’ll last for a long time even with heavy wear and tear. My husband has a mission bag he has used as a carry-on weekly for the past 2 years. Still looks brand new. He carries 2 computers, IPad, mini folio, remarkable, a warm layer, extra charging accessories, water bottle and a lot more. He also has a chrome bag where Velcro came apart and he was able to have it repaired. He used it for quite a while after the repair too. He only switched out because he wanted different access to pockets and such. I love my osprey pack but I’m a fan of pockets and the new styles don’t have the pocket styles I like.

  Interesting. Sounds like the Finnish version of the early Chrome Industries bags. I have a very comparable experience and same brand loyalty to them.

  Honestly I don't know any good made-in-EU options at the moment, since I kitted myself up a few years back, and all the equipment is still good/don't need to buy more. I have a large pack from Hyperlite Mountain Gear (US) - it's excellent, but they are expensive (I mean Savotta is not cheap either). A made-in-Canada option is Dursten Gear which I have not personally used but get excellent reviews. I have a cycling/daily commuter rolltop from Chrome Industries (28L Urban Ex Rolltop). This bag is not dyneema, but it is waterproof and extremely light when empty, sits well on your back cycling, very high quality and it goes on sale so can be purchased cheaper. My gripe is that if you load it to the full capacity, it is not a hiking pack and will be sore on your shoulders after 6+ hours, but I like that this bag can be "small" or "large" depending on the day, and you don't pay a weight penalty for always having the capacity to go large. Again a US company, but cheaper and more widely carried in Europe - as a German it hurts me to say this, but I like their rolltop option over Ortlieb because they are so much lighter. I am thinking of buying a smaller day hiking pack, i.e. 20L or less, that I could walk around for many hours with... one candidate is a Hyperlite day pack, or maybe Arctyrex, but I need to dive deeper to see if there is a boutique EU option. I would like a clamshell and not a rolltop design just because for every day it makes life easier.

  Ever Bought Something That Quietly Changed You?

  Mine's a little silly, but I bought a Chrome Industries backpack about 10 years ago that fundamentally shifted my concept of quality. I had been in the outdoor rec industry for years (REI, climbing gyms, guiding, etc.) and the general trend was, and largely still is, to lightweight everything using increasingly thin synthetic textiles. This generally leads to a sacrifice in durability in one way or another. There are obv exceptions but that's generally how things have gone. Anyway, this bag that I bought was built like a tank and has so far lasted 10+ years. Still made of synthetics, but at least it's built to last instead of built to fall apart after a few seasons so I buy another one. Sort of made a new benchmark for me that I compare everything against. Is it built to last? Is it's key feature a gimmick? Is it built to work, or just designed to look good on the shelf? Silly, but it's really slowed down my purchasing.

  Brands you swear by that have Buy It For Life quality products

  Chrome Industries for bike shorts & bags. Have a couple pairs of their Fulsom shorts that have thousands of miles in the saddle and almost zero wear. I have been an avid rider, often full time commuter, for decades, I cannot say that about any other cycling apparel product with *maybe* the exception of a Showers Pass jacket - but it does not see the wear the shorts do. Their bags are bulletproof. IMO, the gold standard in messenger bags.

  Big fan of anything by Chrome Industries. Lifetime warranty for their messenger bags. I have had one for 10 years and it barely shows any signs of wear.

  Looking for a large, single-compartment rolltop backpack

  Check out the Chrome Industries Barrage line backpacks. They're pretty heavy duty, roll top, supposedly have a very good warranty (though haven't personally tried theirs yet) it's like a bike messenger style bag, haw cargo netting on the back, bottle holder side pockets aren't ideal though

  My first American Giant hoodie

  I got one in the mail yesterday (might actually be the same one lol) but I agree. Great hoodie and pretty much exactly what I was looking for. I was reading into it and saw they were started by the former CEO of Chrome Industries. I love that brand and AG actually vibes me the same vibe.

  Can't decide on a backpack

  One thing I urge you to consider if what you are taking and your workflow. I work at a school, so that means carrying different supplies for the job and my students. When I was business major, a Chrome Industries Barrage worked great for my purposes. It was an easily adptable bag for carrying what I needed. I could stop by a shop and carry all my goods there on top of my supplies. After switching my major to English Literature, the amount of physical books I needed made my backpack too heavy. I used a small rolling suitcase for awhile. It was a good choice, but a bit cumbersome. I now use a rolling crate popular with teachers. It makes all the difference.

  Decent sized Bike Messenger Bag or of style

  Chrome Industries. Been using the same Chrome bag every day since 2005. They make multiple sizes and styles of messenger bags. Top quality, in my experience. Great customer service, as well.
