Totally agree on vintage Coach! I scored a mid-90s one from an estate sale for like $30 and it's bulletproof. The leather actually gets better with age too, develops this really nice patina that you can't fake with the newer stuff

I have 20yo vintage Coach and Burberry that look as good as the day I bought them. I have Fossil and Lonchamp that have just surpassed the 10yr mark and both have held up incredibly well. Louis Vuitton leather, not canvas, just celebrated 5yo.

Try purses from The Sak. I've had both a crocheted and leather purse from them. The leather one is 6 years old and the crocheted one is 8 years old. They're both hobo style bags. The only other thing I could suggest to you is to throw the money at it and buy a bag from Coach. Their bags are well made and quality but they are going to cost you

BIFL is about quality not the brand name.
I’m not married to brands BUT I am a reseller and I choose brands first if I can because they are easier to resell. Let’s say you want a high-ish end bag. You go to Dillards and see a bag that’s well made but you’ve never heard the brand name. You look it up, and it’s for sale online at a high price but the resell market is nonexistent. Five years later you probably wouldn’t be able to unload the bag for a decent amount because the brand never made traction. Instead you go to Coach or Gucci and you get a bag from there. Resell won’t be a problem. That’s my thinking. It depends on the item, of course.

Something you didn’t expect to be BIFL but outlasted your expectations?
Coach wallet from 1990. It has frayed at bit at the edges, but it is still great. I bought an identical one off of Ebay to keep in reserve for when this one completely wears out. Heavy leather purses from JW Hulme, circa 2010. They are like the heavy leather Coach bags from the 80s and 90s. Unfortunately, they went out of business, but if you find any of their bags on Ebay they are so worth it. They will last forever.

Wife wants a high quality leather purse for Christmas (NOT “luxury” brands)
I own two purses that are Coach and from a designer who worked at Coach. Two of these I bought vintage and one at their outlet ~15 years ago. Two things about Coach I love: 1) they construct their bags with metal rings on the bag that connect to metal rings on the handle. This means less wear on the leather as the majority of the movement happens with metal on metal. 2) if it’s a certificate Coach bag, you can send it in for repairs any time. Lifetime warranty can’t be beat. They’re also roomy, stylish, and well designed over all. The one I got that’s by a Coach designer has been my everyday purse for almost 2 years and looks great. I don’t think I spent more than $150 on it, and it was the most expensive of the 3 I have. For your budget you could get more than one bag - depending on what your wife likes, maybe a smaller one for special occasions and a bigger one for everyday? I would check high end consignment stores too.

Coach. 100% no question if you’re looking for a major brand and not something local. The quality of their leather bags is immaculate. I just bought the tabby 26 in the olive spazzolato leather and it’s stunning in person. They have tons of styles and historically have been incredibly high quality for the price. I have several that are 10+ years old and look brand new despite regular use.

You can get a very nice bag for $500 since you don’t want to pay the up charge for branding. Vintage coach bags are ridiculously well made; and some people sell them after they’ve been lying around for years seldom used. But that might be a heavier bag than you want, and it doesn’t have a bunch of pockets and things like some of the newer purses have. I love that stuff. So even though I loved the coach bag and thought it was so well-made and so cool I ended up giving it away.

For a high-quality leather purse that’s timeless and not flashy, look for full-grain or top-grain leather, sturdy stitching, minimal branding, and classic silhouettes. Brands like The Horse, DeMellier, Mansur Gavriel, Coach, and Reformation offer elegant, durable options under $1,000. Neutral tones and structured shapes help them last years. Let her pick the style she loves quality and longevity matter more than the label.

My wife wanted a good purse a while ago and I didn't really know where to start. I just wanted decent, non-pebbled leather that would last a while and look the right blend of stylish, classic, and professional. I called my grandma (who's been retired for a decade but who spent her working life in women's retail clothing) and she recommended Coach. This was 2020 and I think the purse was $300 then. It's started to show some wear this year, but Coach has a reconditioning program I think we'll use. My wife can be a little hard on her things. I'm not sure if 5 years of near-daily use is a good service life for a purse, but overall I think we've been happy with it. $300 was definitely less than I was thinking we'd have to shell out for a good one. Also, it is either completely or nearly unbranded (I can't remember), which was important to both of us.

A 1985-1990 Coach purse is what OP is looking for. My mom got one for Christmas as a senior in college and she still has it 30 years later and it's in wonderful shape. She also uses it every day and is quite hard on her stuff so I can confirm it's built to last.

A vintage (pre 1994) Coach bag will last forever. I have one made in the 1970s I thrifted and have used it every day for 5 years and it looks the same. Coach’s newer full leather bags are also decent. Look for styles like the Madison and Court and Brooklyn that have been around a long time. Dooney & Bourke leather bags are also extremely well made. They can be found at thrifts for under $10 and I bet they’ll be cool again soon. For a newer entrant, consider Polene.

Someone mentioned Coach - their quality depends on their line. I have many. The ones I bought at the outlet are not nearly as well made as the ones that I bought directly from the main stores. But I would still call them a fashion brand and not a buy it for life brand. I have several that are twenty years old from each side of their house and you can tell the cheaper ones from how they have worn out.

My recommendations is coach or strathberry. Both have excellent quality and good price points. Both also have a good variety of designs and styles to suit various tastes. I own many high-end luxury bags that I paid too much money for and coach and strathberry bags beat most of my luxury brand bags on quality. They are my go-to’s for durability while maintaining good design. A get a lot of compliments on strathberry bags specifically because they are beautiful and not as commonly seen in the US. They also have excellent Black Friday deals.

Until you said over $1k, I was going to recommend either Coach leather bags or Dooney and Burke. I love the D&B pebbled leather as an everyday carry. I have one that is over 20 years old that still looks good. I don't own any Coach, but I know women who swear by it. If you want to look at D&B bags, www.ilovedooney.com. It is their outlet store and they have great prices. And, yes, their bags do get pricey, especially the fancy leathers.

Coach and Kate Spade. I’ve used them almost exclusively for 15+ years. My Michael Kors bag has not held up. However, I put my bags through the paces and I can’t convince myself to get rid of any since they just keep going. I don’t buy a whole lot of purses, but they just keep lasting. I usually only buy for different colors/styles when I need a specific thing.

My husband gave me a Coach purse for my 40th birthday at the urging of my sister. I hadn’t asked for it and didn’t think I wanted it and was privately irritated with him for spending so much on a purse when Target and had been doing just fine for me so far, I mean, my $15 purses would last a whole year sometimes, and wasn’t that great? And then. Oh, my. That beautiful navy blue leather still looks JUST as beautiful 14 years later and it has gotten even softer over time. Even the inside of the purse is in stellar condition. I could carry this purse for 50 years and it might need a little reconditioning on the handle but that’s it. I don’t like the canvas ones with the big C’s all over. My purse just has a tiny script “Coach” on one side. Very understated and so lovely. Another vote for Coach here.

eBay searches for vintage Coach bags are the answer— when I researched this about a decade ago, I think the advice was “get one old enough not to be lined, because that’s when the leather was better quality.” You can get one for low three figures easily, maybe even under $100, and they wear like iron.

My wife is a big fan of “Coach” purses. They have outlets all over the place, so even a mass bag is gonna be maybe $400. The quality really is great, and they hold up forever. I actually switched out to a Coach wallet a few years back when my leather Tommy Hilfiger that I got for free 20 years ago finally fell apart.

There's tons of good stuff on eBay, especially vintage Coach which is pretty timeless. Coach bags are glove tanned leather which ages well and can be restored. There's a whole vintage coach subreddit about it. I got myself a large bucket bag for less than $150 and absolutely love it.

Coach. These last and are nice quality but not “designer”. I was gifted a Ted Baker leather purse about 10 years ago (Nordstrom), and it is still very nice. Not Michael Kors ever. Not Lagerfeld since he died. Kate Spade maybe, but she died as well and isn’t at the reins of “designing” anymore.

Coach, Mulberry, Dooney and Burke, Strathberry Polene is nice but I heard they've had some quality issues lately. Also I think this highly depends on her style and how she likes to use her bag... there are a lot of quality leather goods but it's more natural and rugged looking and not what I would consider cute or pretty. AND they tend to be very heavy if it's full leather. If a bag is already heavy when it's empty, there's no way I'm going to use it everyday no matter how great the quality is.

Fount and vintage or new Coach are great recs. Also consider Hyer Goods, they make bags from scraps and deadstock from luxury brands. I have two bags (in styles they sadly don't make anymore) that have held up amazingly for several years with regular use.

this is it. coach also does a great job making more lowkey items with high quality leather. my favorite bag from them doesn't have any markings of any brand but is very high quality leather and has lasted more than a decade. my friend got the vintage version of it on some used website and it looks exactly the same and leather quality is same but the hardware is even nicer on the vintage.

Look into vintage coach purses. Tough to tell around the fakes sometimes, but there is a lot of quality in these. My wife has bags from the 60s still in great shape. Massive zippers, quality leather, brass hardware. I'm not talking about the newer ones with stamped patterns on them.

Vintage Coach. I have 2 Coach handbags (a City Bag, a Willis crossbody, and my big splurge was a Coach backpack). All were from the 80s. All still look great over 40 years later. They will still look great long after I'm gone. I brought one into the store to replace a brass lobster clasp that had almost worn through on the shoulder strap. In those days, Coach products had a lifetime warranty, which at least 5 or so years ago, they still honored. The bag created such a stir in the store, the manager called the staff over to see the bag, so they could see what 'original' Coach looked like. The current plain leather is nice, and might hold up well, but they're split grain leather, and not nearly as durable as the older vintage Coach. Coach even sells some refurbished vintage on their site. Also, as a side note - the older vintage Coach is not lined - it's full skin leather, and already heavy and quite durable. Edges are finished though.

My Coach bags tolerate my careless and rough behavior. Busy mom, work 50-60 hrs a week, carry heavy crap in it like drinks and huge books, and generally distracted person. I’ve used the same bag every single day for 6 years. No tears, no fraying. And I’m not careful with it whatsoever. It’s my second Coach daily bag that takes years of beating and survives. The only reason I got rid of the last one was cosmetic. The current one is looking a little worn now in the print (it’s not a leather bag), but I’m not ready to let it go yet.

Might be going against the grain here (pun intended), but coach consistently puts out high quality, durable, and stylish products. I have it on good authority that their leather is some of the highest quality in the luxury market despite their more affordable prices. I have three bags from them rn. Two being 15+ years old that were handed down to me from my mom. They survived her daily abuse and are now surviving mine with no sign of slowing down. Of course it’s going to come down to what styles your wife likes though. Coach has a variety of products, but may be a bit too stylized and she might prefer something that’s a bit more rustic looking.

Portland Leather is the closest I've seen to that kind of build quality - Frye is now mass market quality with a ridiculous price. As others have mentioned, you should also look for local craftspeople.

Which moment made you switch to the "buy it for life" mindset?
I couldn't fully commit because I was young and broke, but when I was in my late teens/early 20s I realized the utility of an expensive purse. Not something crazy high end designer necessarily, but I had been buying $20 purses from Target and they'd be falling apart in months. I splurged on a Coach bag for myself (I think it was about $150) after I got my first big girl paycheck, and berated myself for doing something so stupid. After that thing still looked new a year later, it clicked. For the same price (or less overall), I could have a bunch of crappy purses that fell apart, or one decent one that lasted for years and years. That big girl job was working at Williams Sonoma and I slowly learned the value of getting decent kitchen tools, too. The first time I used a good garlic press it blew my mind. This works better AND will last through nuclear war? By the time I got married at 26, I had pretty much filled my kitchen with high quality basics and when it came time to register for our wedding, we really didn't need anything. Mostly put camping gear on there. It's been 20 years since I got that job and the majority of those items (All Clad, Picardie glasses, Kitchenaid, Wusthof, etc.) are still as functional as the day I got them.

What’s something you’ve bought once and never had to replace?
I use a spatula that belonged to my grandmother. And then my parents used it for decades. And now I have it. So technically I didn’t buy it, but it’s going on 50 years of use. And I have a coach purse that’s been my daily use purse for 10 years and it’s great.

A long time ago (\~20+ years) they used to be, but then they were acquired by private equity (early aughts) and then later Samsonite. They were the go-to for professional travelers (consultants, etc.) but now its B&R and LuggageWorks and (at a lower price point) Travelpro. You can see from the way they advertise that they've shifted to being more of a fashion brand. I would argue that Coach leather goods also decades ago were really high quality but then shifted focus to fashion.

Looking for a sturdy, stylish women’s backpack that won’t break (recommendations needed!)
With basically the same requirements I bought a Coach outlet bag. In the US at least they are worth nothing (US price is less than half, 80% less for me, of anywhere else in the world, as usual) and with the design I chose there is very little that can go wrong. The material is great, everything seems robust and I got a drawstring top so I cannot break a zipper. With an LTT Luxe for travel and large things plus the Coach bag I am sorted.

I don't know! I got mine from Coach on sale almost 10 years ago and it's still in perfect shape with minor wear and tear of the leather. However, I can't recommend it because their quality goes up and down depending on the coke head who's in charge at the time. Same for most designer brands. Ironically, they're not consistently good despite the price point. I would say find any quality-ish leather wallet that you like and buy it. It will last you not a lifetime but long enough. Also, I don't want to admit it, but getting a new wallet every 10 years or so is a bit of a thrill, innit!

Does anyone else feel like it's impossible to buy quality stuff anymore? Seems like every single thing I buy falls apart absurdly fast. I try to get quality stuff, but reviews are all fake, star ratings are bought... how do you avoid buying junk?
Older person here. Before the internet, we relied on consistent quality from a brand as a predictor of current quality. That made brand loyalty so important. If I wanted a dress that was well constructed, cut to proportions that would fit me and used good quality cloth, I would stay with the same brand. I learned to look for quality construction- the way seams are finished, whether there are loose threads. Stuff you can see on many eBay or PoshMark pictures, btw. We looked for the brands that certain level retail stores carried and essentially let their buyers curate for quality. I could assume, subject to correction, that a brand sold by Macy's or Marshall Field would last longer than one sold at J C Penney. So I stick with the brands I know.A Coach bag is still good. J Crew makes decent quality clothes as does Talbot's. Forever 21 and H&M are cheap quality. Macy's is still better than WalMart. Some of this requires going to a brick and mortar store and touching the merchandise, then deciding if you want to order that top from, say, Lands End. Doing that circumvents all the reviewers.

What’s your BIFL that a dog chewed on and you still use it?
Older coach wallet

What is your most unintentional BIFL item?
Men’s Coach 2-ply cotton dress shirt. Purchased decades ago and not worn for many years when silhouette standards changed but now it’s back.

What is your most unintentional BIFL item?
I was at a shopping outlet as a teenager who just got their first job almost a decade ago. I walked into coach just to browse and found a leather backpack on clearance for $120. I bought it, not sure what to expect. I still use it daily for work and it doesn’t look nearly as old. I hope to never get rid of this thing. It’s comfortable, fits all my stuff, and is the only backpack I’ve never gotten the itch to replace. Luckily for me, who doesn’t like branding anymore, it only has a small label stamp on the front pocket, so it’s nice and discrete.

BIFL HS Grad gift for my daughter
At eighteen, I would have wanted a new Coach bag. I still have my collection from high school, and now I love them even more.

High quality leather mens bifold wallet recommendation?
Their Paragon wallet is AWESOME! and as someone with a lot of experience with leather, I can confidently say it’s made from full grain leather. Feels premium, stays slim even with several cards, and you can tell it’s a high quality brand.

What are your favorite niche BIFL items that are currently available?
High quality handbags, a category which sometimes, but definitely not always, overlaps with designer and expensive handbags. A great value-for-price is vintage Dooney and Burke, or Coach, on Poshmark and Mercari. Those bags last forever, and there are a lot of classic styles and colors that still look great today. My favorite brand, though, is Rough and Tumble. They’re a small business in Maine that makes custom bags in several styles and sizes, using a rotating selection of leathers and textiles they curate. The styles are mostly unstructured, and several convert from backpack to handbag in seconds. They’re expensive (for most people—trivial price for serious handbag enthusiasts, but I’m not a serious enthusiast), about $500, and made exactly how you want with leathers and lining you pick. People sell them used for less, but of course then it’s not custom, and you rarely find 100% exactly what you want. I’ve owned and sold a variety of them over the years, but these days I have one perfect custom R&T I carry every single day, work or vacation, rain or shine. Obviously R&T is not a status symbol brand, more geared for functionality—you’re not going to look as casually cool as someone carrying a LV Neverfull—and labels are a valid reason some people invest in a handbag. For some people it feels like a marker of success, a sign they’ve “made it,” as well as being a good product that’ll last for ages. But if, like me, your reasons for buying have more to do with needing pockets and functionality and loving handmade leather goods, R&T is definitely worth considering.

Many goods or brands’ quality degrades over time, whether that’s through new MBA management, reputation mining, etc. What are some products currently available whose quality has only improved over time?
I've not rarely seen brands improve overtime due to the company being ***more quality-focused*** so much as advances in technology. For example, meta quest is better than the first gen occulus, but that's to be expected as tech evolves. One area where things have changed around is entry level luxury handbags. In the 00s, Coach and the like really took a huge nose dive in quality. They've been trying to turn that around and reestablish their brand name since the late 2010s.

What do you know about Carl Friedrik briefcases?
Yea i was jw bc I found quite a few on ebay for a few hundred off and wondered if it was too good a deal to be true, but it does seem less prolific than other brands. I will look into the Coach metro bag, I originally wanted Coach but couldnt really find one that I liked but i cant remember if I looked at that one.

What do you know about Carl Friedrik briefcases?
Did some bag shopping recently and I’ll shoot Coachs metro bag as a similar but cheaper option. got the tip from Peter’s Prism on YouTube. He had good things to say about Carl Frederick but I have no personal experience with it. If you buy them direct, you shouldn’t have counterfeiting issues - plus I don’t carl Frederick is popular enough to have widespread counterfeits.

looking for recommendations for a reliable, long-lasting leather wallet
My black leather Coach Slimline Billfold is still buttery soft and smooth after 16 years, and despite a small hole in the fold, it looks to be at its half-life

What’s something you bought once and never had to replace?
Coach briefcase. Was a daily bag for years until I switched to work from home. I’ve sent it in twice for refurb- one time they replaced all the piping and handle- essential remaking the bag.

Confession: I only buy clothes and most items made pre-2020
My best thrifting experience was a small store that did designer consignment. The owner had a lot of awesome used items and also sold things like Coach purses. She closed around Covid but she really helped me rebuild my wardrobe and I still have a bunch of shirts and dresses from her store.

I also love the clothes and goods that survive. Definitely need to look at the composition in fabrics! Vintage Coach bags feel incredible for being 30+ years old.

Are there any leather messenger bags that go for less than $100 that would last at the very least a long time?
This! Adding Coach as a rec to check second hand retailers.

BIFL, but also BISecondhand. What are some things that everyone should keep an eye out for, but can commonly be found for cheap when preowned.
It’s something of a vanity brand, but Coach handbags, totes and wallets will last a lifetime if well maintained and the older styles are more timeless and less dated than ones from the last decade.

Non-minimalist wallet that'll last?
Coach wallet. My dad had his for about 11 years until it got wet and had a little wear on it. The wallet is still in holding up even to this day. Sometimes, i switch to it. I have one of the monogrammed Bilfold coach wallets, Nothing wrong with it, I plan on keeping it until it falls apart.

This is your reminder that vintage Coach id BIFL and “new” Coach is trash
I bought new coach last year because I *FINALLLYYYY* graduated from a diaper bag and can carry a reasonably sized bag again. Quality is great IMO. No issues at all

For over 20 years, I have been buying Coach, and I’ve never had this issue before. Not even when I used to buy from the outlet. This is their newest stuff, I think this fob was made last year. And I’ve been having trouble with them ever since. This is why I only buy their vintage stuff now.

It goes into my purse and it comes out of my purse. It shouldn’t be scratched up like this. But that’s the new quality for you. This is their most recent line. I think it’s from last year. I’ve purchased Coach for 20 years and this is the first time I’m having issues like this.

The metal. It used to be brass. Old Coach wouldn’t even scratch for years. I bought this bag in 2010. The fob I bought this summer and its destroyed already. Its alloy.

The make. Coach now uses cheap leather and the same alloys as cheap purses. I have an older fob that lived well five years before getting dirty. This one is entirely scratched up and turning colors.

Coach, Toyota, Yamaha, Patagonia

What’s one product you bought that has lasted forever and was totally worth it?
I'm very hard on purses. Used to get a new one every 9 months or so because the strap or lining or something would break. My daughter bought me a coach purse. It's 10 years old, and slightly worn looking. Lining is good. Strap is perfect. Zipper is sturdy. Definitely beats buying a new one more than once a year.

What’s the best luggage for under $150
If you want affordable, go to a thrift shop. I got a $600 coach bag for $10, my wife got a hard shell bag that is around $200 for $15, and we see stuff like that basically every time we go to a thrift shop.

Recommendations for Designer Backpack
No you're right, mfs really said "This is not the place for "designer"", if that isn't gatekeeping I don't now what is. They outright claim "BIFL is understated, quality and no brand names", as if it can't be anything more or anything less. It doesn't matter if they write "most" in one sentence out of four - this sub loves to gatekeeper. Coach has excellent leather for the price - vintage examples still look lovely years later, great hardware, good construction, designs aren't anything special. They aren't designer, but easily the best value. Loewe, Longchamp, & Bottega vintage examples can be very good, but you have to search around. Their modern bags aren't bad at all either, just extremely expensive for what you get and middling design. Same with Celine, Dior, Chloe, Bulgari, they all have had some good pieces over the years, but you need to do your research as to which leather which bags use and the construction of said bag, I would never buy those brands retail. Quality on a lot of these went down post LVMH buyout, so you really have to do your research and if possible learn to feel the leather be able to differentiate between good leathers and cheap leathers coated in plastics and whatnot. People here conflate quality with value. LV bags are horrible value retail. But to say a neverful empreinte bag isn't a BIFL purchase and low quality just because its designer would be lying - you can get significantly better leather from local artisans for the same money no doubt, but treat it well and it will last you a lifetime. Hermes is probably the biggest example of this, insane margins, insane markups, but the crafstmanship is there no doubt. As long as you are well aware you are paying in majority part for the high margins, logo, designer label, design, and marketing, and that the bag only really takes 1/10th of the MSRP to construct, its a fine purchase. I've been using a hermes double-tour watch strap for the better part of a decade now, and my has a vintage herbag, and they have both aged wonderfully.

Which women’s clothing brands do you stalk for sales? (20-30 age style)
Salvatore Ferragamo, Eileen Fisher, Frye, Dr. Martens, Cole Haan, Nisolo, Vintage coach, and LL Bean, but I stall not only sales but also stalk second hand sites. For these brands, especially vintage, I find that these are quality.
