  I bought some $10 Wrangler's from Walmart a few years ago on BF sales. I was surprised at the cut and they fit me well and I went back and bought two more pair. Of course, that was probably 2-3 years ago, so life might have changed. Great for every day wear. All I ever wear is jeans except when I go out for a hike I have some Columbia light weight hiking pants.

  18 years is a damn good run for any coat tbh. If your old Columbia lasted that long I'd probably just stick with what works - that Snow Glide looks pretty solid for your budget

  How do synthetic base layers compare to merino wool base layers?

  My job requires me to do outdoor labor for ~8h days in the cold sometimes, and so far my favorite base layer tops are Columbia brand with “Omni-heat” lining. They’re thin and breathable while also being insulating and have stood up to the manual labor I’m doing for years. They’re costly at ~50$ per top though. A cheap brand that I also like is cuddl duds, found at Walmart for ~10$ per top.

  Women’s winter boots

  Ice Maidens by Columbia are good for grip. If you Google top 5 or 10 winter boots for snow/ice traction they are generally rated new every year. Last year they listed a newer winter Ugg and I did try them but for me, they were uncomfortable. Good luck finding a pair that works for you.

  I got both a long Uniqlo down coat and a short Columbia warm jacket this year at the thrift store. Not BIFL but will last many seasons and were very gently used, so a bargain while I look to thrift something that may be BIFL.

  Have you ever tried the Columbia Omni Heat Infinity? I’ve had it 10 years and it’s still like new. it’s light weight but soooooo warm. I ride my horse in it and do barn work so it takes a beating. Affordable and fantastic.

  Sweaters for sensitive skin

  I ended up in fleece. Columbia, Patagonia, etc. Everything else makes me itchy or isn’t warm enough for winters around the Great Lakes. I have a fleece that has lasted 15 years and I’m still wearing it.

  Canadian checking in here - I'm from rural Ontario and hubby grew up in Winnipeg. Both of our go-tos have long been Columbia. They have various warmth configurations, but I am partial to any of their "omni-heat" line. My current jacket is from that line and I have never had a lighter, thinner or warmer jacket. Outside of their brand, a lot of people in our circle rely on Eddie Bauer or North Face. Stay away from Canada Goose. There are better down jackets made by more ethical companies that will stand up just as well at a reasonable price point.

  New buy it for life shoes or hiking shoes

  I have a pair from Columbia that look exactly like this. I use them for things like hiking and shoveling snow. They are about ten years old and still look brand new despite moderate use.   Great jacket. Had something similar back in the day but got rid of it when the zipper broke. Had I know how crappy things were made in the future…I would have kept it and fixed the zipper. Same goes for my 1990s doc martens…should have kept it. Looks great on you my friend. Cheers

  “One for all” jacket recommendations

  Look for a winter coat with a hood and a zip-out lining that is longer, definitely long enough to cover your hips and ideally down to your thighs and past your buttocks. I have one made by Columbia from 2016. It weighs very little but it is the warmest coat I own. If the temperature is colder than -5 degrees Fahrenheit, the coat alone won't keep you warm anyway--you need thermal underwear, wind pants, winter boots to insulate your feet, and of course a scarf and a hat. Anyway, the zip-out lining in my coat is is also a puffer jacket that's good down to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The outer layer still works as a coat without the lining, but it's really just warm enough as a rain coat or wind protection. It has a hood. The coat needs to fit loose on you so that the insulation in it does not become compressed. You need the coat to stay... fluffy?

  A Columbia Whirlibird IV jacket kept me warm while dogsledding in the Yukon in -30F for a couple of hours in January. (With layers underneath, of course.) Since I have another Columbia jacket that has lasted 10+ years, I have no reason to doubt this one will last.

I think i am at least 20 years using it, it still looks almost new and has been more than wonderful in really cold temps. I know it’s not a status brand but it’s definitely done its job!

  Why is it so hard to find well-made clothes that aren't insanely priced?

  Where are you shopping that those are normal prices for you? I live in Canada (albeit the warmer part lol) and ive never paid more than 250 for a winter parka/coat. I go for reasonable brands anf shop their sales. E.g. Columbia, LL Bean etc...  Under that, a baselayer tee + a wool sweater is plenty. I cant imagine paying more than like 150 max for a sweater. Fleece works too for cheaper. E.g. uniqlo, banana republic... make sure you know how to take care of wool sweaters. A lot of people ruin wool with improper washing thrn blame the quality.  Winter clothes are about layering, not $1000 parkas.

  I live in Minnesota. My best jacket ever was a Columbia that I got in August at an outlet store. I MAYBE paid $20 for it. It's almost 20 years old. I don't wear it daily anymore, but I have it for super cold days. That thing blocks out all the wind, and keeps me warm (at least where the jacket covers me) when it's -20f or colder.

  99% of the people that buy Canada Goose do not live in a climate that need it. Vancouver is a hot spot for them and they barely get snow. That isn't even including the fact that it's not even real down anymore and owned by private equity. Just go to Eddie Bauer or Columbia

  I live in Winnipeg too. I use a MEC parka, a couple Columbia jackets, I've not felt the need for Canada Goose. They've lasted me 5 years so far. I got the MEC parka over the north face parka cause it was just as warm and had more features compared to the north face parka so I returned it. The Columbia jackets are discontinued but they're warmer than the parka. Canada Goose has pivoted from a workhorse item to a luxury item and that space has been filled by other, better or just as good outdoor brands like the ones I mentioned plus arcteryx, Patagonia, outdoor research, etc. The money you save is significant esp if you buy when winter clearance sale is on. Canada Goose never goes on sale fyi so get it when not buying when a sale is on. The warranty however may make up for it I guess.

  Looking for a good quality winter coat

  Northern Maine resident here. I have a Carhartt Super Dux hoodie that seems to be my staple. I've only been here 4 years, and have a few winter coats in my closet. Carhartt, Columbia, and North Face. I also have a few vests to go underneath. I really like the Columbia one, as it has a reflective pattern on the interior that reflects heat back into me warm space. The North Face is the most waterproof of the four. The Carhartt jacket is untested as I got it at a yard sale over the past summer (brand new and I only paid $5, retail it was over $200). However, my North Face vest and this Carhartt hoodie have gotten me through the past two winters. I deliver pizza so I needed something easy on and off, while still being in the elements for like 20 deliveries a day. My actual winter coats all look brand new because they live in the closet. I may donate one or two to a cold looking person while on my routes this winter. I recommend an insulated vest as well as a good jacket. From inside out, you want: - moisture wicking layer to pull sweat away from your body - insulation layer to trap your body heat - outer layer that is wind proof and water proof To truly stay warm, please add: - a good hat. Your body will sacrifice a lot of is heat to keep your brain warm. A good hat will make the rest of your warmer. - insulated, waterproof boots. Make sure they are insulated. - wool socks. Not crappy 10% wool, but at least 70% there is no substitute - for me, gaiters are a must. Zip up or snaps (Velcro always wears out first). I'm in and out of the car so often and driveways and parking lots are just slush pits, so having a simple solution to keeping the cuffs off my pants and my shoes dry is vital.

  Former NYC resident. The big thing here is that NYC winter isn’t bad but if you are new to it it might take a couple years to adjust and figure out what you want. So just get a Columbia 3-in-1 you like or an Eddie Bauer First Ascent Puffer. Either on sale is even better. Make sure it’s long enough to cover most if not all your butt. I’ve had several of each of these (in different sizes) and they work great.  The latter won’t be waterproof, but snow isn’t that wet most of the time and a soft shell, raincoat or umbrella works fine.  If you want to spend more, REI (RIP Houston store) or Outdoor Research will have something.

  Need help deciding between four winter boots; Columbia, Danner and Sorel.

  I got the Fairbanks Omni Heat in 2023 and they were completely waterproof for about a year. I wore them basically every day for that year and then they started to leak a little on one side. I wore them for another 5 months or so before I switched to a shoe that's not as warm. When I started wearing them again this year, I noticed more leaking at the seams on the sides. I live in Vancouver so it is often really wet out, but they were great for 12 months of constant use.

  Most insulting jacket? I'd recommend something from the Don Rickles line. In all seriousness: Canada Goose, if you've deep pockets Patagonia and Fjallraven are not as expensive but can still get a little pricey. Fjallraven products are warranted for life. Columbia jackets are a bit more on the economy side and can do the job as well. I'm sure there are going to be plenty more good suggestions coming as well

  I’m a fan of Columbia, they have great sales discounts if you watch their emails. I scored a parka last year that I’ve used in the snow, taken to Norway, etc. and it was something stupid, like $150 instead of $400. I’ve also scored half-price Fjallraven at Nordstrom. I love their light weight puffy jackets.

  My wife purchased some Columbia hiking books for me about 7 years ago. Those things are comfortable, durable, easy to dry, great traction, etc. I put them through the ringer every hiking season and fishing season since I've owned them, and they still look good too.

  Ive worn the same pair of womens Columbia boots for 5 Midwest winters. They're calf height on me, super warm at -30f, decent traction, no fur. No complaints about arch support. Boot doesn't have a model name printed on the tag, sorry for that. The interior looks like silver reflective material. On their website i think that's the 'omniheat' feature. I expect they'll last 5 more years without issue. My wife has a pair of Bearpaw boots she likes a lot. Much taller than mine, but hers do have fur at the top. Looks fine after 3 years tho! Hey since you're new to the cold, like i was a few years ago, I've never regretted buying a handful of pairs of thick wool socks and a few wool 'base layers' from REI.

  Canadian here - I only buy Columbia Bugaboot now. They are the only boot I’ve found that keeps my feet warm. They look huge but are very comfortable and light. For super cold days, I have heated socks. I only need them for 2-3 days a year but they are delightful. Also heated gloves have changed my life.

  What’s something you’ve bought once and never had to replace?

  My husband was carrying his Columbia backpack as we biked and hiked around Madeline Island/Big Bay State Park this summer and we started thinking back to all the places that backpack has seen. It's been going strong for at least 25 years through multiple domestic and international trips. I have a North Face backpack I got in 2003 that I used in college, now used as a carry on bag - hasn't seen quite the miles the Columbia bag has but it's still made the rounds. I could use a bigger bag for travel, as mine is really meant for school, but I'm nostalgic and love carrying that thing.

  Brands That Used to Be BIFL — But Aren't Anymore?

  as someone who works at a store that sells north face: it is almost entirely the name people are buying. The backpacks and shoes are decent enough, but the clothing is almost entirely just for the name. I think some of the snow gear is decent, but my country has a fairly limited snow season (most people will never see snow, since you have to be in alpine areas to get snow) so most people don't get that stuff. In truth, most of the puffers and other apparel is on the same level as the higher-end homebrand we carry, but the homebrand is far easier to put through for a warranty on our end and often much cheaper. if you want tactical gear (of the brands we sell), we generally recommend columbia (for general everyday wear), our homebrand (for hiking clothes), helly hansen (mostly for sailing, but get it on sale or clearance, since its expensive otherwise) and a local brand for snow gear (expensive but one of the best snow brands in the country)

  Need recommendations for durable trekking shoes (Reviews on Merrell/Salomon/Altra let me down)

  I've used Merrell extensively in the past. I only wear them when hiking (i.e. not asphalt/concrete) or for city walking when it's raining and I want waterproof. My last pair I stopped using because my heel finally starting ripping up the foam on the back but otherwise the shoe itself is still working well after 10 years. They were recently downgraded to lawnmoving shoes and replaced with Columbia Crestwood's. ANY shoe will wear down in 6 months if worn and used extensively. Most people aren't going online to review their shoes, especially if they work well. The internet is primarily for the outspoken disgruntled.

  How to identify good quality clothing (so you don’t waste your $$$)

  It’s worth noting that there *are* high quality garments made from synthetic materials out there. *Most* synthetic garments are shit, but a couple summers working in field biology in the south (and some helpful Reddit commenters) have taught me that sometimes they’re the best fit for the job. When you’re doing hard labor in high humidity environments, loose-fitting clothes made from natural fibers (the standard heat recommendation) will become drenched with sweat, stick to your body, stay wet all day, and chafe parts of your body you didn’t know were capable of chafing. Additionally, it turns out high-end nylon hiking pants (Patagonia, Columbia, Fjallraven, etc) are 100x more durable than any natural material of the same weight, and often more durable than low-end canvas. The knit polyester “wicking” shirts seem to get caught on stuff and pill over time, but they’re a necessary evil when you’re working in the sun on a 110° heat index day.

  Look for one with a 3-layer membrane (like Gore-Tex or eVent), not just a DWR coating that wears off in two washes. Bonus if it has taped seams and a storm flap over the zipper. Patagonia and Rab have solid options, but even some Columbia and Marmot shells hold up decently in storms without breaking the bank.

  If you are active in your jacket, you will get humid, whatever the price point you choose for your jacket. For light walking in the city, a 50$ Columbia jacket will get the job done, really. I read good things about the Patagonia Torrentshell 3L… No need to invest in a 400$+ jacket unless you wish to flex that Arc’teryx… When hiking or any strenuous activity, you will get wet from the inside, no matter what, so get any decent jacket and focus on bringing a dry shirt and socks to change into at the end of your activity. Been hiking for 30+ years.

  The most important factor on a rain jacket is the dwr (durable water repellant) coating. DWR is a coating applied to a fabric like Gore-Tex which makes the water bead up and roll off the surface instead of soaking into the fabric. DWR does not make the fabric waterproof but it prevents the surface fabric from being saturated which traps moisture inside the jacket. Most waterproof fabrics will not lose their waterproofness but the DWR wars off and the jacket will "wet out". If you feel wet in a waterproof jacket, it is more than likely moisture or condensation coming from your body which is not able to escape the jacket. Maintaining your DWR finish is critical for the life of a jacket. Check out this link from Goretex for some illustrations on how it works.   My husband loves his Columbia winter jacket.  He went with the option where the fabric is similar to Carhartt or Tough Duck and it has stood up really well.   My favourite is my silk- lined leather bomber jacket (WWII style, not the modern style).  Nothing stops the wind like leather, though I find it's not warm enough for the -25 C days,  but it's great for anything warmer than that.    I have a wool- lined leather jacket that weighs 20 pounds,  but is the warmest thing I've ever worn.  Basically,  consider a leather store.

  My husband has a patagonia bomber thats at least 10 years old, and it was a farm coat after the first year. Its waterproof with a light primaloft liner. They make a really similar coat still. My other suggestion to look at would be Columbia and Outdoor Research. The first runs awesome sales and hubs current winter farm coat is a Columbia that fits your needs. Their Omniheat is brilliant. I only have shell/other experience from OR, but the upper level stuff does NOT die. I have a goretex shell from \~06 that is just now getting super in need of repairs.

Didn't see anything I wanted by them, so I tried the 33,000ft brand. They're actually really good, and were pretty cheap. But I saw some bad reviews for their insulated jackets and vests, so I don't know if they're very consistent.

  What are some items under $500 you’ve made so far that changed your life?

  A bidet. During COVID when everyone was going insane, not finding tp, everyone used our master bedroom bidet, we installed a second one for the kids’ bathroom, and wow. We have not bought toilet paper in four years… well, we did buy TP once when my FIL came to stay with us over the holidays because he refused to use the bidet. A good set of stainless steel, triply pots and pans. My last Calphalon set lasted me 24 years. I just replaced them because the handles were finally getting hot and they’re not supposed to so I bought a new set. A friend of mine wanted the old set so I let them have it. A good, honest to the universe Japan, Japanese. My old knife lasted 25 years. Just this year, I replaced it because it was starting to hurt to use it at the handle, and it had been sharpened so much, it was actually getting too thin up the core. I bought a set of two Bunkas for $200 made by Yaxel. They should last me a lifetime. We have a 3-ton air conditioning unit that is loud as it is a voracious power eater. In my area there is a place that does auctions for returned or unsold items from places like Costco, Best Buy, or the LG and GE factories. I bought a pallet of window air conditioners that hang out of the windows for about $100 for five. We set one in each bedroom, the family room and have one left over for backup. That has kept our home nice and chilled during hot days, and has reduced the consumption of power we would otherwise have with the 3-ton AC unit. She is loud and old and used to wasting so much energy, the power used has gone down by 70% which in turn saves us a lot per kWh. Lastly, bought 3 in 1 jackets from Columbia for everyone at home. These are jackets that will unequivocally keep you warm during cold weather, or windy nights, or rain/snow. Bought them on sale for about $80-120 at the Columbia site, and they have lasted us years and still look like new. Always invest in a warm jacket that has many uses if you can splurge. Life changer. For other small things, use OfferUp, local auction sites, or estate sales. I have switched appliances through auction for the fraction of the price of brand new ones. Did with the fridge, stove, dishwasher, laundry, and now AC.

  I bought a mid sized down jacket from Columbia on sale for $80 2 weeks before a REAL winter storm here in Montana and i was very surprised. I didn't get this for extreme cold but thought I'd try it out in a -45 degree blizzard. i had to shovel 18" of snow in very high winds and much to my surprise not the slightest bit of cold air got through that jacket. this midsized jacket is now my go to for extreme winter weather. $80 not $400 like some insane brands out there. I like Duluth trading base layers with a long sleeve polyester shirt and the jacket. all i needed for this weather.

  Uniqlo basic tees and their selvage jeans are good everything else is sub par quality. Muji has better quality shirts. Charhartt wip are pricey but worth it. Work boots. If you can afford redwings those are amazing. If you cant, wolverines are good intro boots. Ive had a pair for 10 years and counting ive only had them repaired once. Watch I chose a seiko automatic not too expensive but reliable easy to maintain and relatively stylish. As someone that walks as a main mode of transportation there are NO BIFL sneakers/shoes so buy whatevers comfortable and just trust that youll need to replace them after a year (or 2 max) and since everyones foot is different youll need to find a shoe that you have tried before buying. Rain coat columbia is the best IMO. North face is literally the heaviest out of the rest. Patagonia is OK but theres something about it im not comfortable with. Backpack. Waxed canvas. Just remember to check the wax on it regularly. No specific brand in mind its more of the upkeep I have literally 20+ different insulated tumblers ive only used 2 on a daily basis. One is a standard 22oz silver one with no paint coating. Its all beat up but it has character and since it doesnt have paint my ocd doesnt get triggered. The second one is an old hydroflask back when they were just starting and not a money grab company they are now. Its an open top cap one for coffee. Lunch box, zojirushi lunch jar. Yes this is pricy but as someone who is well in his 30s and brings lunch to work this is awesome cause it keeps food hot for 8hrs (warm till 12hrs) ive had mine since college. This thing is pretty indestructible im pretty sure it would out live me. Also since im also part asian zojirushi rice cookers are built to be handed down generationally. Right now im out of what else to recommend but let me know if youre looking for a specific item ill let you know my thoughts on it. Yeah other people would recommend the best most expensive but on an actual practical level im a pretty safe bet to ask.

For just basic inexpensive warmth without wind or water blocking, Uniqlo down is good, they have short and long versions, it’s also winter coat sale time, so Patagonia, LLBean, and Columbia should have good deals.

  Columbia parkas come with lifetime warranty. Bought my first one in 2008, it’s been replaced (new parka) twice due to zipper failures easy process for return. Zippers are starting to go on my current parka that I’ve had since 2016.

  Do you think BIFL is actually cost effective?

  A tshirt you wear once a week or so around town or hang around the house in can be dirt cheap and last a long time, or a jacket your just throw on during winter running errands can last *years*. BIFL items are usually more durable “heavy-use” items like hiking boots, tools, work pants, edc gadgets, etc. I have the same Columbia jacket from 6 years ago that I wear every winter, but I’m not taking it out chopping wood or raising barns. I’m just wearing it around town, and it still fits and functions perfectly. I have a $15 leather wallet from a birthday 10 years ago that still functions perfectly because it sits in my pocket or in my “spot” for it in the house. Properly maintaining your things can also have a huge impact, but again, BIFL is more specifically for hard used stuff

It was only in the past year that I finally had to toss what remained of the socks. On Amazon, I'd read recent reviews that Columbia quality has declined over the years. So, I've been searching for another brand to try. One of my Columbia fleece jackets is still like new, only because I wear it a lot less. The other one is still in service, though it's become thin from so many washer/dryer cycles and being worn every fall, winter, and spring.

  Mountain Hardwear is NOT BIFL, their quality is terrible.

  Columbia is another brand that I've had great success with. All my kids wear their snow gear. I have a soft shell that was basically my only coat for damn near a decade in Texas. Now that I live in Utah, it lives in my trunk as part of my winter emergency kit.

  Zipper, pockets, grade of materials to a degree. There’s a budget level where the material and cost above it are not worth the extra price. Eddie Bauer and Columbia, for me, are that lower threshold. I don’t find much value going higher, usually. I don’t see the point of North Face and other boutique branded items.

  What's your most comfortable and durable piece of clothing?

  The one that’s been in my closet the longest is the Columbia Omni-Heat winter jacket. It was black and now has faded to a dark gray. I bought it from one of the sporting goods stores for $140 when I was living on my own with an income of $23k per year. I grew up with my grandma buying me $30 jackets from Wal-Mart every year and they were never warm enough (I run cold). The $140 was a lot at the time. That was 15 years ago, so that’s $10 per year. I’m hoping my Lululemon leggings last for a while. Got them last fall, and so far, they’re holding up well!

  A Good Waterproof Insulated Jacket/Coat

  A thin portable rain coat of your choice and layers of you desired warmth level underneath.   Much better than an all in one.  I travel a lot and always have a cheap Columbia of Frogtog rain jacket folded up on itself in my backpack.

  Columbia omni tech. 2 jackets that zip together or can be worn separately, the outer layer is water/wind proof, the inner layer is a puffer and has thumb holes. Wore them in northern Europe this winter and kept me super warm and dry.

  3 in 1 winter jacket?

  I have a Columbia 3-in-1 that is a puffer that zips into a shell with waterproofed zippers. It’s great for the colder Chicago days, and last year I took it on a snowmobiling trip to Yellowstone. The only reason I don’t wear it this year is that I lost weight and it’s too big. They change model names up all the time, but I’m sure they have a similar model, and they are often on sale.

  [BIFL REQUEST] Looking for a jacket, waterproof shell + liner (or an insulated jacket) from one company

  I can't recommend Columbia enough. Their parkas have a lifetime warranty. All you have to do is send it in and they'll either repair it for free or replace it. I just sent in a coat that was about 7 years old. They had to replace it, but no longer carried the model so they had me go to their Webite and pick out any one that I wanted. Two weeks later it arrived. They're great coats, last forever, have a lifetime warranty and their customer service is great.

  I have a nice Columbia fleece one. It's fantastic and super cozy. It's about single bed sized but can fit a couple on a couch. It's held up well to regular use and washing.
