  This one...Contigo West Loop Stainless Steel Travel Mug with AUTOSEAL Lid, 24oz., Stainless Steel By far the best travel mug I own. The only one I own. This thing kept coffee hot for a 10 hour red eye across the pond in the bottom of my backpack. I have had it for a couple years now and it is still going strong. Pretty easy to clean with a denture tab.

  I did for one Contigo when the rubber seal failed. Two emails, one with a picture explaining the issue and asking if there was a good solution to fix, not even asking for a replacement, then one with my address, and an entire new bottle was shipped to me, no cost at all.

  I like my water ice cold, so I have a few insulated Contigos, picked up in a 3 pack at Costco. One had the seal fail, and I asked Contigo for a replacement lid, they just sent me a whole new bottle, no fuss, no arguments. I don't expect to have to buy more any time soon, but if I did have to, it keep with them again.

  I was ruined by the ease of my old standard, the Contigo Autoseal (discontinued). After a ton of searching and trial and error I found my forever replacement in the Coleman Autoseal FreeFlow. It’s pretty heavy duty, but I highly recommend it. I have one of each size!

  Contigo, specifically their cortland model. It has a good volume, perfectly places buttons which allow it to be used quickly and effeciently. It also has a built in sling that is hard stuck to the cap which makes the bottle hardly swing when hung. So many bottles have flexible anchorpoints making the bottle flop all over. The cortland just hangs on my belt holder when i'm walking around and doing my duties. It doesn't get in the way, it doesn't flop around and i don't need a hand free to take it anywhere. This is for me the most important thing in a bottle. I never have to be thirsty as i can almost always take my bottle with me without a hassle.

  I was on the Contigo train for over a decade. But now they stopped selling their replaceable lids. I still have a Contigo and still love it, but the lids keep crapping out after a year or two. I'm on my last lid now, when it goes I'll probably look elsewhere.

  I love my Contigo leak proof, insulated bottle. I've had my original for at least 10 years now. I have multiple and they are all over the house because I forget where I leave them. The best thing is that they are truly leak proof. I can throw it in my purse or backpack and not worry about causing a mess. I walk with a cane so I end up carrying too much with one hand/arm, which means they get dropped A LOT, but aside from some chipped paint, you'd never know it. They are also the perfect size for standard cupholders. Also, they are not very pricey.

Only replaced it cuz someone stole my contigo at the airport and they dont make the same one anymore. Had the contigo before since high school. Not a big fan of getting on the new bottle trend.   Don’t care about the bottle. I care about the lid. Squeeze button, hole unplugs, drink, not pressing button, hole is plugged. Ideally mechanism flips open for better cleaning but also has a wide enough opening to provide a reasonable drain speed. Contigo can do both but haven’t done them in the same bottle yet. Their lids work on all their bottles , and I’ve switched bottles more than I have lids.

  I have a plastic contigo that I absolutely love and have had for a very long time. Pre covid for sure. I just bought a new one from ello because of its style. It has a wide opening that you pop open if you want to put ice and a straw like opening to drink from if you like. Let’s see how I like it going forward.

I need it to be transparent so I can see the water level, have a straw, decent to clean, lightweight, lockable, and aesthetically pleasing.   Look for brands like Tervis or Contigo. Tervis mugs are double-walled and have been around since the 1940s. They scratch, but they will not shatter.

  Finally found a water bottle that doesn't crap out after a year

  My Hydro Flasks are champions. I wanted a lid that covered the top of the straw when I wasn't drinking., so I purchased a knockoff lid. It fits perfectly, no leaks. I also highly recommend Thermoflask, it's just as durable as Hydro Flask. For those who may not care about insulation, Contigo is excellent. I have some of their water bottles and coffee cups. I can throw any of these things into a tote without worrying about leaks.

  Yeah, it's a little large for that I'd bet. I commute to a home office, so it wasn't a worry for me. Contigo makes a bunch of other mugs that will, though. They're also very spill-proof (the one above isn't spill-proof, though it does OK for liquid not sloshing out).

We have three Contigo mugs (bought from Costco) 10 years ago that we still use and they are fine. We were also gifted another set of two (bought off Amazon) about 6 years ago and those ones keep coffee almost too hot. Ours only get used for coffee.

  I love Contigo! I might be able to explain so if the 2nd-hand availability. I picked up mine on a discount website, loved them, got another set super cheap. They last forever and I only really needed one, especially after Covid and shifting to way more WFH. So I donated 3 and kept just 1. Still use it all the time, 10 years later.

  I have two - one is black and one is just plain stainless steel. They both work great, but the black paint has begun to chip off around the lid, revealing the stainless steel underneath. My advice is to just skip the colors!

  They sell them at Costco in combo packs with 2 or 3 in each, so there are a lot of them out there. I've had one and it works really well. The auto-seal lid is quite nice and not a pain to operate. The constant seal when not in use and overall design keeps drink hot or cold for a long time, some of the best I've had.

  I love my Contigos - they seal amazingly well. Agree with others that you definitely need to rinse/scrub the lids often to make sure nothing gnarly starts growing there. If yours has a coloured coating, it may come off in the dishwasher (but I'm lazy and choose the easy route to sterilization). Some have an odd shape that doesn't fit nicely in your car cup holders, so choose wisely!

  Contigo is the only brand that (when locked) I’d happily through upside-down into my work bag with laptop, headphones and other tech and have zero worries whatsoever. I have never experienced a leaking event. I def echo the concerns around cleaning though. Don’t put the lid in the dishwasher as it eventually tastes like detergent.

  We both constantly use the contigo Chill bottles with the leak - proof lid. Similar issue on cleaning the lid, I have been known to throw them in the dishwasher every so often. We lose more of our lids to getting dropped causing the drink hole area to get all beat up and rough than anything else. Have definitely dented a few bottles but usually we can deal with that. I did have one lid fully fail that was less than a year old. I contacted contigo and they replaced the whole bottle.

  Soak it in warm water and OxiClean and coarse sea salt in a container that has a lid you can shake the contigo lid in. Shake it for like 30 seconds and then run it through the dishwasher (or hand wash well) You’ll be amazed what the oxiclean/water looks like after your done ! 15 years strong with contigo lids like this !

  I have a few of these mugs. I love that they seal up tight, and they keep stuff warm for a relatively long time. I have two main issues with them though... The lids are fussy to clean, and the plastic that the lid is made of over time starts to hold onto flavors and make your beverages taste weird. I find it is an issue with when you put the lids in the dishwasher (they are dishwasher safe), the lids quickly end up tasting like dishwasher soap. A third minor issue is that the paint tends to peel off pretty easily. I've replaced mine with Yeti mugs which I find to be much better other than they don't seal up as tight as the Contigo mugs.

  I have my grandpa's old contigo and it's the best thermos I have. The new ones look so hard to clean. Have you tried throwing the lids in a container of water with a denture tablet? That's how I get weird gunk out of my thermos & water bottle lids.

  I absolutely love my contigo travel mug. Keeps my coffee hot for hours, never leaks (this is huge for me since I throw it in a bag), simple but great design. Honestly if mine ever gives out I’d buy another in a heartbeat.

  We have a bunch of these from Costco. I keep using them. I like they don't keep stuff super hot so your actually can drink them.  I like that they seal. I can lock the auto seal and throw the cup in a bag. My other cups don't seal as well.  Contigo used to have amazing warranty. But it isn't as good as it used to be.  I occasionally dishwasher the lid but never the cup.

  If it’s a lot of the same brands, a lot of times your stores like target or other big box stores will donate all their extra stock, especially for seasonal stuff at the end of the season. So this may be what you’re seeing? Overall, it’s not a bad brand the biggest issue I’ve ever had and I think other people have saidthis in the comments is the fact that these types of cups have a lot of nooks and crannies. So keeping them clean can be difficult.

  Yes, absolutely. I pull the gaskets and the magnetic closers off the lids and put all 3 in the top rack. I've washed mine probably hundreds of time. If it can't survive the dishwasher it doesn't belong in my cabinets. The only exception being wooden spoons and carbon steel knives.

  I can't rave about them enough. Of all the mugs I've ever owned, Contigo has been the ones I use the most. Easy grip, easy push of the button, no spills. I even had one that was made specifically for Keurig that was the perfect fit for the cup holder in my BMW lol. I'm genuinely sad you can't really find them anymore at the store. My sister decided my mom had too much crap and tossed her contigo mugs, and she called me in tears about it. I searched high and low for replacements, and managed to catch a couple of 2-packs for $30-40 each, it was ridiculous. I bought them anyways. Wish my thrift store also carried them.

  I've had my Contigo Westloop (Basically the OG autolock) since 2012. It took a tumble once and they replaced it no questions asked in 2020. Still going strong. If all you want is an affordable and reliable travel mug, I consider it a BIFL product.

  Completely agree. If you accidentally let go of any other kind of bottle, it will spill. The autoseal does what its name implies, it seals immediately so when a bottle gets knocked out of your hand, the bottle is sealed. These were the only bottles I bought when my kids were young and I continue to purchase bc their customer service has always been on point. Unfortunately, when a lid failed me and broke, Contigo said they couldn't send only a replacement lid (which bothers the anti-consumption part of me), but they simply sent an entire replacement bottle and lid.

  I should add that they have a really good support network in the UK. I had some lids that had broken, both cold plastic and insulated metal bottles. A quick email, photo and proof of Amazon purchase meant I received a load of replacement lids a few days later. This is not to be undervalued as part of the BIFL culture

  Same!! I habitually rinse out the lid each and every time I refill mine. I didn’t know this at first and had a few lids that I had to disassemble in order to get them really clean, but ever since then they come clean pretty easily with a little soapy water & jam as much of my dish scrub brush as I can fit inside without breaking anything. I love my contigos. We have some that are at least 10 years old & still going.

  Ehh, for me, the time spent on cleaning the lid is worth it. I have found nothing that seals even half as well as these Autoseal lids. I work around a lot of tech. Cleaning the lid is so much less of a headache than dealing with liquid on electronics.

  I'd say they'd be good for that. I used to just throw mine in my purse sideways as I went out the door for work. I think they lasted about 5 years of daily use and dishwashing before they started not maintaining temperature as well. They were also pretty dented from how often I dropped them.

  I think you see them there cause they sell them in packs at Costco and people probably have too many. I’ve had two pairs since 2014 or so I only started using them in 2023. I was blown away at how well they keep things cold. I once even forgot one on my kitchen counter with a little ice in it in the early morning around late spring where I live, it was completely without the lid. I came back in the late afternoon and the ice was not 100% melted.

The mugs still work great and I’m less bothered if they get dented or scratched because I paid $5 or less. I just give the inside a hearty scrub with Bar keepers friend and a bottle brush and scrub the lid with an old toothbrush.

  Have you really experienced Contigo if you haven't been baptized by pressurised steam venting directly into your face? 🫠 Jokes aside, they're virtually indestructible. Cleaning them is a task. They'll keep your hot drinks scalding for 8+ hours (if you're like me and can't handle extremely hot drinks this is a downside).

  I used to work there, they're pretty well engineered but the lids can be tricky to clean well on some versions. They were the #3 best selling brand in the US for a long time so there's probably tons of them floating around. So long as you don't drop them on the lid onto concrete or something they last for ages, and you can get replaced lids if that does happen. I have some from when I worked there that are over a decade old, from back before Newell bought them.

  The lid goes in the dishwasher. Hand clean only the cup, which is easy. I've got 5 or 6 of these (a few water bottles in different sizes and a few coffee cups in different sizes). Just run the lid through the dishwasher and it's no more difficult to clean than any other cup.

  They are great for taking with you on a walk. I take mine on morning walks with my dog pretty often. If you have big enough pockets, you can even stash it in your pocket, as long as you are careful about positioning it in a way that the pressure from your pocket doesn't push on the Autoseal lid button and unseal it.

  I think "trendy" people give them up to replace them with Yetis or Stanleys. These people are making a mistake. I've got a few of the 16 ounce ones for hot drinks and two of the 24 ounce mugs for ice water. I don't know if they're what you would categorize as truly "Buy It For Life", but they're absolutely "Buy It For A Heck Of A Long Time". I put the whole things (lids and containers both after separating) in the dishwasher. Some of the painted finish tends to peel after a few years but that's okay with me.

  This is a pretty good summary. I'll add that their customer support is fantastic so I'll continue to buy their products. I had 3 very old models (different lid mechanism, almost the same bottle shape, no longer made). They developed an issue where liquid could slowly seep from the button after \~ an hour being used. No receipts but I did have a good idea where I purchased. Relayed that and pictures with all the bottles, lids, and serial numbers to them. Brand new mugs in the mail not long after.

  The top can be hard to clean if you're not paying attention. I personally love these. They only wear out if someone bites the bottle while drinking or throws it really hard (in my experience). There is a part on the top you are supposed to flip out when you clean it and keep out while it dries, and I've always done it, but i can see how it can be annoying. Some people are getting rid of these for Stanley cups, but I find Stanleys get too heavy for my hand (injured arm)

  From a "keeps stuff warm or cold, doesn't let liquids spill on my tech" perspective, Contigo's (with an Autoseal lid specifically) are absolutely amazing and I cannot recommend them enough. I've been using them for at least ten, if not fifteen years now. The one drawback is keeping the Autoseal lid clean. The mechanism has a lot of nooks and crannies that simple hand washing doesn't get to. Biofilms tend to grow in there. You really need a small brush that you can get in there to mechanically clean the surface (the pressure from your sink sprayer isn't enough). I don't think I would consider them BIFL, because I have dented a few to the point that they look kind of crappy to have in a meeting, and you can break the lid by dropping it on a hard surface, but if you take care of it, it would definitely qualify as "buy it for a long time".

  I tried to use glass water bottles but after I shattered my second one I went to BPA-free plastic. I really like Contigo’s lids that close themselves.

  I have a Contigo travel mug and it is almost too good. Hours later, hot beverages will still be as hot as they were when they were first poured and I still have to wait for it to cool to drinking temperature.

  Same, I've broken several Nalgenes, and they get scratched and look terrible too. I like my insulated Contigo, and I also got a Swell in 2019 at a conference. It's going strong! I use it almost daily.

  Nalgene last forever but the mouth is huge, so is the most popular size 320z. With water its like 5 pounds and doesn't fit in any pockets, bags, cupholder etc. Contigo fits in more places, sartorially and physically. The caps are of soft enough plastic to not count as for life, but the stainless steel bodies are.

  My Contigo I use only for water has been pretty good at keeping my water cold. My favorite Contigo is my locking one I use for hot drinks. I have thrown that sucker filled with molten tea in my work bag with electronics and it has never let me down. It can be used for cold as well!

  I've had a couple Contigo that I've used for 10 years. One metal, one bpa free plastic, both dishwasher safe. What I love most about them is the lids. They never leak, and all you do is push a button to be able to drink without having to remove the lid. I love them for home, gym, and hiking, and will never buy a bottle where you have to remove the lid to drink again.

  I have a Contigo bottle, stainless steel with a screw cap, if I need a lot. Smaller and still good, I have a glass IKEA bottle with a yellow screw cap. It’s glass though.

  Water bottle that won't leak (without a silicone ring)

  I've been using a Thermo Flask for 8-9yrs. It's 500mL and for kids lol I used to use Nalgene and Contigos but have dropped them enough I've cracked the bottles. If you have a good grip they're good as long as they don't have a valve in the lid.

  Leakproof insulated travel mug recommendations

  Exactly how I came across brand like 7 years ago. I got one for $2.50 and I was excited! I got home, sanitized it and tested the leak-proof design and it was perfect. I had that cup for 4 years and loved it. I had to ride bus for a month to get and forth tk work when originally found it. I always just threw it in my cross body bag that I had everything for the day in, never failed me! My coffee would also stay hot for 6-8 hours, which isn't best... who needs a 10 hour old coffee on average day though? I know there are better for different aspects, needs and preferences, but for price, Contigo is amazingly worth it.

  Are Stanley thermoses recommended

  Question is what's going in the thermos and what form factor does it need to be? For example: -Stanley's fit in cup holders where a lot of similar products do not. That's a killer feature for a lot of people. -For coffee/tea, Contigo is cost effective, keeps coffee hot for hours, and lasts forever -Hydroflasks keep water cold forever, but only the tiny ones fit in cupholders -Thermos has great designs for food storage that many other brands do not etc etc

  It's a buy it for life subreddit so it's all about buying quality stuff that will last as long as possible. Yeti is top in my book. I don't know much about thermos personally. Contigo is also a pretty affordable brand they I have found to be very good quality so maybe have a look there.

  Young professional purchases

  Focus on what suits *your* needs, rather than on the idea of what a young professional needs. Like, people could declare a certain coffee maker a kitchen essential, but if you don't drink coffee, there's no point in getting it. For the less fashion sensitive articles of clothing, LLBean has fantastic quality, and Lands End is also pretty good. If you lose your water bottle, BIFL status is less important than usability, although if you like the mouth of Nalgene, then obviously keep using it. I favor Contigo and Camelback because they encourage me to drink more water than I would with a Nalgene, even though they are inherently less durable. I have an STM backpack with a well padded laptop compartment that I love. It's held up better than any other backpack I've had. It's also quite comfortable. Watches usually last pretty well. The weak points are thin plating and canvas or leather straps (which are also more comfortable, imo, so I put up with them). I'd make sure to get something I won't be sick of in 10 years, because unless you get a really crummy one, you'll probably still have it. That might be one of the more important BIFL aspects with watches, really. Briefcase: Depends on your job. You want it to fit the environment. You might be interested in a fountain pen. It won't save you money, but it will mean you'll have the one nice pen instead of a bunch of cheaper ones. For a discrete pen, I like the Hero 616, which is modeled after the Parker 51. The standard pen recommendation is the Lamy Safari. I always use Noodlers Black ink, because it's impossible to remove from paper, which makes it great for signatures, but some people prefer washable ink to avoid clothing mishaps.
