  I'm not sure if you bought a different version or not, but I bought Chuck 70 and they've held up extremely well for me. I've been working out in them six days a week for four years now and they're showing wear but still holding up.   Well I'm now going down a rabbit hole of Japanese made converse. I have a pair of the Chuck 70 with the thicker canvas, but the Japanese ones especially with Vivram soles look amazing

  This. There are some Converse made in Japan such as Converse Addict that do have Vibram soles and all the fixins that make for comfort and longevity. I wouldn't call it BIFL but they def last more than a year.

  I've not had my MIJ Converse for very long, but so far they seem to be wearing better than the usual ones. Just be careful when wiping the toe; I've found that the cream rubber is only a veneer over a white base, so go carefully on toe scuffs.

  The converse I bought in Japan lasted me several years compared to the converse I bought in America. My converse in America is cracking at 6 months and the bottom is peeling in a year. They need to be made in Japan though to get the higher quality, they also have a specialty brand that you can customize in store.

  I've had the same pair of converse all starts for about 10 years now. They still look and feel great. Haven't even worn a hole into them yet. They still have the felt on the bottoms. Fucking love converse.

  Been rocking collab converses (Rick Owens, HAVEN) for 2+ years and they still look great. Can also vouch for the 70s ones, but not sure about the normal ones.

  My girls go through some chucks! 😔 Are Japan one supposed to last longer? I have found that the ones that feel thicker (normally ankle high and have a pad on the back) last waaay longer.

  For converse to last, you want the extra durable double canvas version. Mine have held up with working out six days a week for years now when the typical ones only lasted a year or so.

  Not BIFL but Japanese Converse is a different company (since the 80s If I remember correctly). I have done leather slip on converse from Japan I've worn for years in the office..

  If you started your wardrobe over from scratch, what would you buy? (US)

  I recently moved overseas to a much, much colder continent so I did have to a) declutter and sort through everything I own, b) pack the clothes I needed for the year in a single suitcase and then c) collect a lot of new stuff to suit the new climate. I also might have a few contrasting choices as I'm a young-ish woman who likes dressing up and wearing interesting pieces (e.g. there's not a single grey thing in my wardrobe). I brought with me: **Tops:** 10-ish t-shirts, most from second-hand stores or small businesses; 3 cotton longsleeves (to be transparent, they're all Taylor Swift merch); 1 merino wool and 1 merino/silk blend long sleeve; 1 thermal shirt; 1 corduroy button up/light layer; 1 men's linen button up; 3 sports jerseys for working out **Dresses:** 4 thrifted cotton dresses - 1 mini, 2 midi, 1 maxi **Outerwear:** my Kathmandu raincoat and another rain-resistant jacket; 2 sweaters; 1 puffer jacket **Bottoms:** 3 thin cotton or linen pants (all fun patterns); 1 pair of hiking pants; 2 pairs of bike shorts; 2 mini skirts; 1 thermal pants; Lululemon leggings **Shoes:** black RM Williams boots; brown blundstones; white converse; teva sandals. The converse are falling apart (4-ish years old?) so will need to be replaced by another everyday walking sneaker and I'm keeping an eye out for brown leather boots to better match some outfits. Plus socks & underwear, swimmers, hats, beanie, bags etc. I've purchased another merino wool long sleeve, some soft cotton lounge/pyjama pants, some wool/polyester trousers, some thermal leggings and some jersey trousers from Uniqlo, a coat from a vintage store, and a Patagonia fleece from a second hand store. I also bought some 100% wool trousers from a second hand shop but they accidentally ended up in the wash and shrunk (still feeling their loss). This is tiding me over well for now, but I'm still building up my collection of athletic/hiking/outdoorsy gear and hoping to do that as sustainably as possible - sourcing secondhand, buying from reputable (and inevitably expensive) brands, choosing natural fibres etc. Also on my list: another sundress (but holding out for the perfect one), a pair of leggings more suited to running (as opposed to yoga) and a long gingham skirt. Long (sorry!) but I've been thinking about my wardrobe a lot this year so had lots of thoughts to put down!

  Love this! I’m with you on the Danner boots. Once you find a pair that fits right, nothing else compares. For me, it’s Leatherman multitools (they just keep going), classic Converse sneakers (comfort + style combo), and good old-fashioned Castile soap it works for everything from dishes to skin. Also, swear by those trusty Yeti tumblers they keep drinks perfect no matter what. What else people got? Let’s build the ultimate lifetime buy list! 👊

  Birkenstocks for everyday sandals, or Bedrock sandals if you want a pair of hiking sandals that can double-time as casual sandals Basic canvas sneakers (e.g. Converse) for quick and casual errands, or leather sneakers if you want something a bit smarter. I personally like Converse slip-ons (they look like laceless versions of the All-Stars) An inexpensive pair of Goodyear welted boots (e.g. Thursday Captain) for everything else. Just go Asian-style and wear socks or go barefoot indoors instead of dedicated "lounge shoes."

  How can I stitch these back together?

  I have a pair of CT Street Slipons that I just refuse to let go. Same problem with the sole. I've tried E6000, shoe goo. But nothing holds. I will try the barge cement someone else just recommended here. They may not be bifl, but it doesn't mean I want to trash them if I can help it. And I just love them.

  I shop Poshmark & Thread up, only for the quality brands and sizes I know are consistent. Petite Banana Republic, petite Ann Taylor, Chic, Converse. Patagonia. Forgetting some but I buy mostly classic styles that I only need to supplement with trendy accessories. I treated myself with Doc Martens on my 70s bday. Brand new at Poshmark 1/2 the price.

  Has everything we buy reduced in quality over time? Has anything increased in quality or stayed high quality and durable?

  I dunno if I'd call it staying at high quality, but converse high tops are still pretty good. I think they even upgraded the insoles so they're more comfortable. They used to be a dirt cheap "poor" shoe, and sure while they're overpriced for some canvas and rubber they've been consistent. I've been buying them for about 20 years and usually get a few out of each pair which is pretty good for how little material is involved.
