  Unpopular opinion: The 'BIFL' mindset is becoming a luxury most people can't afford, and that's by design.

  Bull 💩, I have Corelleware dishes I have used nearly every day for 30 years. They have been dropped, left outside, served up mudpies and been sent through the dishwasher countless times. Most still look nearly new. My mother-in-law's 50 year old Corning cookwear was used regularly and with the replacement of a couple of lids is still in great shape.

  My in laws still use their Corelle from the 80’s and when I first joined the family, I thought they were ugly and looked cheap. As a newlywed, I was excited to buy stylish dishes for my new family. I still have those stylish dishes and I still get compliments on them, but I’ve recently purchased a set of Corelle (in a nice pattern that I think is stylish, I only recently discovered that they make some nice patterns) and I never plan on going back. They are strong, they don’t get as hot in the microwave, they are light and stack tightly making it much more efficient to store them in your cupboard. I feel like I’ve been missing out my whole life.

  I've been using my dish set, Festiva by Corelle since 2004 and have only broken two pieces from the set. I have been looking at Ebay to expand my set from 8 to 12 place settings. I have had other brands come and go over the years but my Festiva set is still looking great.

  So I am a third gen Corelle enjoyer, I have an entire cupboard with like every shape imaginable. I’ve heard that the older patterns used lead in the glaze, this blue pattern being one of them, but I haven’t been able to fully confirm or debunk these claims, but just FYI. If anyone has any extra info on this, I’d like to learn if this is truly dangerous or not. Personally I don’t take chances and only have newer glazed corelle or non-glazed.

At some point I’ll collect an entire set and sell it or someone will need a piece to finish their set. But fuck modern dishware. They have the recipe to make indestructible goods, but choose not to.

They opened the crazy daisy but left the Old Town Blue (blue onion) in the box. So now my dishes are the Old Town Blue that my parents never opened!

  I second the recommendation for Corelle (new only, they used lead paint through 2005), and Lodge. I'll add Anchor-Hocking as another brand for glass, and Brazilian made Tremontina pots and pans.  Tremontina also sells cheap kitchen knives that are surprisingly good. Victronix is also great for knives that aren't expensive but last. It's usually what you'll find in restaurants.

  Dinnerware that doesn't get hot in microwave

  The microwave heats up water. The water then heats up stuff next to the water. The microwave does not directly heat up dinnerware. The lighter your bowl and the longer it sits in there next to your hot food the sooner it will get hot. The solution to hot bowls coming out of the microwave is a towel, not changing the bowl around. I have mostly Corelle because it's light weight and easily replaceable and it lasts a long time. But because it's light weight it gets hot quickly, microwave or otherwise, when it contains hot food. It also shatters into thousands of fine shards if you manage to break it. So maybe it's not what you want. Maybe what you want is the heavy "stoneware" stuff or porcelain stuff made for diners and other low end food service operations.

  This post is a bit old, but I'll chime in as a long-time Corelle user. I'm clumsy and, as a child/teen, broke more than my fair share of dishes. Heard about Corelle's durability when I was 20 and looking for my first dinnerware set. Found one on clearance and still have it today (15 years later). This year one of the plates finally got a small chip on the rim, but we've run our fingers every which way on it and the edge is smooth and still perfectly safe to handle. I've cycled through a fair amount of dishware over the years, but my Corelle pieces have lasted through it all. While, yes, most of the designs look outdated, I believe this brand is considered 'buy it for life'.

  Vintage Arcopal Honorine set my mother in law gave us and our new Corelle set. The Arcopal came to us with 6 large plates 8 small plates 7 bowls and 8 mugs. Corelle is a set of 6. Plenty of plates for the holidays

  Well corelle still makes stuff, you can get it online or at Walmart and all kinds of places. The arcopal set is no longer made but you can still readily find sets on ebay or etsy, im sure other places as well

  I’m a kitchen enthusiast who has spent 20 years upgrading my kitchen tools. - All-clad Tri ply stainless steel. - Staub or Le Creuset cast iron Dutch ovens - Cast iron fry pan (keep it well seasoned and it will eventually become just as nonstick as a nonstick frypan. Better yet buy a vintage one with a smooth interior) - Shun or Global chef’s knife and paring knife - fiesta ware dinnerware, or simple white Corelle - cast iron griddle pan that you can place over two eyes on your stove, keep it seasoned for non-stick goodness - electric appliances will eventually wear out, but Breville small appliances are very well made and long lasting. - Norwex microfiber cloths - kitchen aid stand mixer - heavy gauge baking sheets and jelly pans - go to a restaurant supply store - Rubbermaid plastic containers (from restaurant supply store) - vitamix blender - invest in upgrading your kitchen cabinetry with pull out drawers and sliding shelves to maximize space and organization.

  What’s something you’ve bought once and never had to replace?

  I’ve had the same winter coat for more than 15 years. I use it all winter, I’ve done intensive yardwork in it before, hiking, long walks. It is still in good shape except that the zipper is getting finicky. I’ve been using the same wool-lined leather gloves for a similar time period, and also used them for cold weather yardwork, and they’re still in ok shape. My Corelle plates and bowls had a life before me, and I’ve had them for 20 years of regular use with only one chip. They’ll outlast me. I also have some of those octagonal glass cups that are hard to break and will also outlast me.

  Looking for wedding registry ideas.

  Go for quality pieces over sets for sure. No knife set, no cookware set. Here’s my recommendations so far. - Duralex Picardie glasses (timeless, still in production, super durable. - Corelle plates and bowls (they make strange designs, but they also have simple white rounded and squarish plates) Le Cruset maybe if you prefer the style. My grandma handed some down, so they last. -Oneida flatware if there’s a style you like from them. I think they have a lifetime warranty and my parents’ has still lasted my whole life, although I have had a couple table knives rust from the dishwasher. (Haven’t tested their warranty) - All Clad stainless 12in skillet D3 (I got the D5 because of a sale and I liked the brush metal). - All clad or Demeyere 3qt-3.5 range saucepan…something with a lip for easy pouring - Demeyere 10in saucier? (I got this massively on sale and it’s super heavy, but it kinda bridges the gap if I need a smaller skillet like surface, or a larger saucepan surface. The rounded edges make it perfect for, well…sauces lol. - Le Cruset Dutch oven (although, the saucier has a lid and can go in the oven…even fits a sourdough loaf!) - Asahi professional line cutting board. Natural color is cheaper than black. Maybe not quite for life, but it’s the closest thing besides an end grain cutting board which is much more maintenance. They’re beefy. They’re rubber with some wood in it, so avoiding the microplastics and the bacteria growth of other boards. You can fairly easily sand off a micro coating of it and haha a completely new surface as needed. - Get a quality chef knife (or Santoku or something if you prefer), paring knife, and serrated knife, and learn how to sharpen the former 2. (I’m currently learning on the Sharpal double sided sharpener…maybe practice on a cheap knife before your nice BIFL ones though lol.) - Nordicware sheet pans, bread pans, cake pans if you’re into baking. - Pyrex 3 piece measuring cup set (sorry I broke my rule about sets lol) - Kitchenaid stand mixer (if you’re into baking) - Hario V60 Pour Over Coffee Starter Set (the one with the plastic pour over piece) if you’re into coffee Might have other recommendations for rice cooker, coffee stuff, and cooking utensils, but it’s probably not as BIFL. Hope this helps! I know people love cast iron and carbon steel. Go for it if you like, but I really do prefer a stainless steel pan myself.

  Go to Walmart or Target, buy an 18 piece set of Corelle White Frost White. That's 6 each dinner plate, small plate, bowls. You can add additional pieces like serving bowls and platters, pasta bowls, dessert cups, if you wish. Highly break resistant. Only one that's ever broken in my house was forcefully thrown during an argument. Kids made off with the last set when they moved out.

  It’s tempered glass. So the same strength that the plates have due to the tempering process is what gets them to blow up in a thousand tiny pieces if the stress is too much. They’re basically under tension all the time, like if you would pull plastic foil tight. It’s stronger and can bear a significantly higher load but once it breaks it really rips apart

I advise you to go read this thread, starting with the oldest post. 🙂 I grew up with the brand, and got my partner to buy a set.  Dropped a bowl on our ceramic tile floor, and it didn't break.  (I should look and see if it dented the tile.😅)

  Plain white Corelle. The ones I have are over 20 years old. A couple have a very minor chip. Some of my Corelle is way more than 20 years old. Was my mom's in her kitchen for many years before she died in 2007. It's not family heirloom stuff but it's practical and it stacks well.

  Anyone keep a “BIFL Roster”?

  This isn't a full list by any means (what I'm about to list I mean, not talking about yours), but here are some things we've had good luck with that I didn't see on yours: vintage stainless flatware (there's a good bit out there and they last pretty much forever aside from when a piece accidentally gets tore up in the kitchen sink disposal) oxo kitchen gadgets (I'm a particular fan of the stainless steel ice cream scoop, but we also use the smooth edge can opener, and bottle brushes) crocs (I know they're not necessarily BIFL but they do last a surprisingly long time, particularly if you just need them for normal around the house and outside errands) corelle cast iron lands end tote bags

  What products used to be well built back in the day but now are low quality?

  Refrigerators Washers Dryers Manual tools Power tools Before my time, a wood board actual sizes were larger than today. A 2x4 was a actually closer to 2x4. They keep getting smaller despite the name saying they aren't. Corelle Oneida Revere ware They were made in the statrs with lifetime warranties. Then 25 year warranties. Then 2 year. I have no idea if they have one at all anymore. Tge websites have a lot of complaints at the quality differences. Pyrex measuring cups. Now, the measurements eventually fade. They used to be almost baked on. Steel cars. Oh, there were garbage ones. However, they were expected to still be able to work for decades if maintained. Composite board furniture was still heavier duty. Today, it has cardboard backing instead of composite board. Furniture as a whole. I'd still prefer to pay more and buy something that won't be useless quickly. Couches were made to reupholstered instead of scrapped. Today the frames collapse almost as quickly as the cushion gives up the ghost.

  Going to university for 5+ years – what are the best affordable BIFL items I should invest in?

  I have several kitchen items that I bought in college (or shortly after) over 20 years ago and don’t regret any of them. Adding a few extra items I didn’t know about at the time but that would have been useful, too. - a good paring knife, either Henckel or Wusthof. I recommend going to Williams Sonoma and holding them to see which is most comfortable for you. - a good chef’s knife. Mine is a 7.5” Mac Superior. - bread knife if you’re into bread.   BIFL dinner set recommendations

  Corelle is great--they last for decades. However, they are not 100% immune from those dark marks. Those marks are essentially steel rubbing off from your flatware into the (much) harder ceramic material. The flatware you are using (and the quality of the stainless steel/heat treatment used) can greatly increase or reduce this. (To remove those marks, a paste made with Bar Keeper's Friend will take them right off in seconds.)

  What is your most unintentional BIFL item?

  I didn't anticipate their longevity either. I just wanted thin, plain white dishes that weren't plastic. So, I bought a pack of six Corelle ones. One of the cheapest options at the store, too. Our family grew a year later, so I added 6 more. 9yrs later, I'm still using the original 12 I bought. They have been left on a hot stove and dropped onto tile after it burned my husband and just bounced. Once it cooled down, we checked for any chipping. Nada. Kids have left them outside, dropped them more times than I can count (including down the stairs), and they should all be broken 10x over. Not a single dish has been lost.

  Top BIFL Household Items for Starting Over

  It depends on your priorities. If your family is very big on food and home cooking, kitchen items will be important. If you are just homebodies who want to enjoy movie nights, “home theater” items are important. Here are some thoughts: Basics - Bedding. Maybe not BIFL but quality is important - Cleaning appliances (? my brain is fried I forgot the word), like vacuums. Any broom has BIFL potential and doesn’t cost $$$$. - Dinnerware. Corelle is my favorite but sturdy dishes that can take abuse are important. Kitchen - KitchenAid stand mixer. Cheaper maybe-not-so-BIFL alternative is a dash stand mixer. - Cast iron. Super cheap and can be thrifted, just scrub the heck out of them and season for a while. Doesn’t need to be expensive. - stainless steel. Can go in dishwasher, can cook well, doesn’t die an agonizing death like nonstick. - Multi cooker. Rice cooker, instant pot, or other. Depending on your family’s needs: rice cookers can multicook (but primary function is grains), instant pot is great for “quick” cooking or slow cooking or dry beans, and a crock pot is a classic. - wood cutting boards, not bamboo. Take care of it (end or edge grain) and it will last forever. I like my Sonder LA boards and don’t recommend Teak brand. One size for large batch cooking or rolling dough, one size for everyday and if you are bougie one size for quickly cutting things like apples. - Knives. Doesn’t need to be expensive! I have two babish knives and I’m pretty sure they will last forever. I also have a paring knife from a 99 cent store set that brings new meaning to the word survivor. Don’t forget to sharpen them. Shopping - Thrift stores - Buy Nothing groups - facebook marketplace - Etsy or ebay, depending - surplus stores Considerations - can you get a cheaper version and live with it until you can do BIFL? - can you wait to purchase it without worrying about tariff-induced price issues? - can you get it secondhand?

  Top BIFL Household Items for Starting Over

  Check out thrift stores for all of this stuff (which may be difficult in a part of the country that just had a natural disaster.) 1. Corelle or Corningware dishes (I just found corelle plates at the thrift store this weekend for $1 a piece!) 2. Bedding, rugs, towels...Costco. 3. As for kitchen appliances - I just buy whatever America's Test Kitchen recommends. They test the $$(# out of kitchen gear and I 100% trust what they say. All the things I have purchased based on their recommendations have been amazing. 4. I use a cheap Mr. Coffee 5 cup coffee maker and I'm happy with it. My Keurig died after 10 years (honestly a good run for how much I used it while raising babies) and I replaced it with the cheapest thing Target sold. If I get 5 years out of it I'll be happy. If I wanted BIFL coffee I would do a simple pour over - my aunt and uncle have the same pour over pot since Ronald Reagan was president. I am sorry that this happened to you. It's a hard thing to recover from but I know you and your family will rise from it.

  Corelle stopped making the cups and saucers for Winter Frost White some years ago. Now, if you buy a set, you get stoneware mugs. I don't know why they stopped. But there is hope you can find some of the vintage ones on that auction site, or in your various local thrift stores.   We use Corelle plates and Duralex bowls & tumblers in multiple sizes. We've dropped the tumblers on a tile kitchen floor without issue multiple times. The only ones (twice!) we've broken were when someone smacked the lip of the granite countertop [right above the dishwasher] with the side of the glass either putting it in or taking it out of the dishwasher. They're fun to clean up when they shatter, for people who enjoy type 2 fun....

  Unpopular Opinion: “Researching Before Buying” as an Excuse for Overthinking

  This is why I thrift. My BIL (brother in law, I didn’t miss an F lol) does a lot of great research on big purchases like knives. Meanwhile I’m buying my decent knives literally one knife at a time; I posted about a CUTCO knife here one because I love it more than my “better” brand knives and this sub tore me a new one but it’s still my favorite knife. I also have a quality steel KitchenAid made in Germany with a hefty tine I’ll be resharpening for the next decade, and a Chicago Cutlery bread knife I might take to my grave. For each of these I have 2-3 knives I tried and didn’t “cut it” (literally), I just donate those. My cookware is Le Creuset or thrifted, I have only two exceptions (3-ply SS IKEA 360 pot) and off-brand Hexclad (Snowclad) frying pan. My dinnerware is Corelle or Lennox Fine China. My partyware, bowls are all vintage borosilicate glass: Anchor Hocking, PYREX, ARCOROC pink swirl. I don’t own any glassware of any kind that isn’t borosilicate. My tea set is moss rose (mixed porcelain makers, same pattern). I do not use paper plates or bowls ever, I own plenty of reusable vintage pieces. If I can attach an appliance to my KitchenAid stand mixer I will do that before buying yet another thing. I have a spiralizer, meat grinder, and pasta maker. All of my utensils are vintage (including Cutco! lol), excellent quality high temp silicone, or wooden. I use a wooden spoon or spatula every single day because hardwood has barely been improved upon. For clothing I require 50% minimum natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and linen. I don’t count rayon unless it is labeled organic. I read all the fabric labels and can thrift by feel, like I never mistake a polyester sweater for wool and can feel different cotton blends. Natural fibers last longer, and my wardrobe is like 75% thrifted. I also thrift BIFL boots and shoes, which generally don’t exist but better boots last a very long time and have exchangeable parts like boot liners and insulated soles so there is rarely a need to buy new. To each their own but I’m mostly here to learn about what things last so I can then thrift those things or find them on Marketplace.

  Hello BiFL! I'm looking for ideas to put on a wedding registry! (Canada)

  I've been married for almost 15 years, and we still use a few things we got for our wedding daily. The Zwilling knife set and stainless steel pots and pans, as well as the old Pyrex baking dishes and liquid measuring cups. The 18/10 stainless silverware and all of the metal baking pans are still going strong as well. Surprisingly, the Walmart towels we bought for our first apartment are also all doing well. Most things broke or stopped working at the 7-10 year mark. All the small appliances, the non-stick pans, the glassware, and even the salad spinner. The Pfalztgraff dishes did pretty well until we had kids, and then those were replaced with Corelle dishes and Picardi glasses.

  Having used both: similar, but the IKEA ones break a lot more often. Also, they don’t ”explode”, so they are not pre-stressed. (Correlle dishes are Pre-stressed, which makes them a lot stronger, but which also means when they break - they break. They tend to not break in half, they tend to shatter completely and utterly, into a million pieces.) Edited for cool related fact: look up a Prince Rupert Drop. Same pre-stressed idea!

  I don’t get the buzz behind corelle dishes

  I worked for Corelle for several years, and I'll tell you a few things about them. First, there are no "other plates made of the same material." There is only one factory in the whole world that makes Corelle, and it's in Corning, NY. The manufacturing process fuses 3 layers of glass into a single laminated piece that is pressed while still molten into various ware shapes, and then the edges are fire polished to create a smooth edge and create an encapsulation of the core glass. The "green" ware is then annealed slowly in a long oven to remove internal stresses. As the glass cools, the surface contracts at a different rate than the core glass, creating massive tension in the surface within the piece. This is called tempering, which makes it incredibly strong and is the same technique used to make bullet-proof glass and car windshields. It's also why there are many millions of pieces still in daily use that were made decades ago. Patterned sets with colorful decoration are created by printing with an ink made of powdered glass frit suspended in a wax carrier, which is then fired in a kiln to fuse it to the glass surface, making the artwork incredibly durable so that it can withstand decades of daily dishwasher use. In addition to lasting a very long time, Corelle is also safer to use. If your loved one were to trip with a plate of food in hand and fall on it, the glass shatters into small pieces instead of dangerous shards. They might receive a few small cuts, but there is no risk of severing a major blood vessel. In fact, when a Corelle dish finally breaks, they don't consider it a failure, but rather, it served its purpose and failed successfully. Other benefits are that it is very lightweight, safe for use in the oven, microwave, and freezer, and it stacks efficiently, taking up very little space in your cabinets. Another fun fact, the massive glass melting tanks are electrically powered, using long electrodes to pass a large current through the molten glass. Over time, the high temperature and abrasive nature of the continuous melting process erodes the refractory bricks that line the tanks, requiring periodic tank rebuilds that cost many millions of dollars in materials, labor, and down time. The Corelle pressware plant employs union labor, providing hundreds of good paying jobs for US workers.

  The alternatives arent the same material. If they are, they are probably even more expensive. Apparently, they are made of three layers of glass stuck together. So yeah, you can buy a glass bowl, but its not the same at all. Id argue that a borosilicate glass that was then ion exchange tempered would be better. But thats expensive and i doubt anyone makes that

  Do they feel high end? No. Do they look great? No. They’re light and durable. My wife grew up using them and with young kids I was fully on board with getting a set. It’s nicer to be able have them use these over plastic plates and we all use them because they fit in the dishwasher nicely. When I cook nicer dinners, I do like to bring out the nicer earthenware.

  They are definitely breakable. I've broken both very old ones (from the 70's) and also relatively new ones. But I've only ever broken a few over my lifetime and I love how durable they are, especially as compared to nearly any other dinnerware.

  1. Hard to break 2. Lightweight 3. Relatively cheap 4. They stack really well. You can fit 12 dishes in a space where you might only be able to stack a few regular dishes. I entertain a lot, so i love being able to have a big hoard of dishes. 5. Stoneware often slowly allows microscopic amounts of water to seep in. Eventually it gets really hot if you microwave it. This was the reason we got rid of our stoneware. Also it took up way too much space.

  They are lightweight, durable, cheap, and they are compact and stack nicely. I can have 16 plates stacked up in the same amount of space as 4 stoneware plates. They are difficult to break in my experience versus my stoneware that would get chipped randomly (even like in the dishwasher for some reason).

Corelle is made from the same material as the nosecones of ICBMs. Stick your friend's cheap ass plate in a 350F oven and see what happens to it. I have relatives using the same set they bought in the 1960s every day.

  Now that there are generic tempered glass dishes many of them are good. For a long time Corelle was the only option as it was made by Corning, the gods of glass who are responsible for many variations & innovations of this wonder material we take for granted. Same people who made gorilla glass. Corelle guarantees quality & gives you a very good chance of replacing any lost pieces far into the future, but it's essentially just a name brand now.

  If you start throwing them deliberately, all bets are off. But the normal, "it slipped out of my wet hands and fell in the sink" type accidents are what Corelle survives and stoneware breaks

  Doesn’t chip, light, inexpensive, readily replaceable, durable, kidproof. I’ve burned through too many pieces before I realized how important the “kidproof” aspect is. Haven’t broken a single piece since switching to Corelle.

  I bought my Corelle dishes from Kmart in 1994. They've been used nearly everyday for 30 years and still look near new. No breaks, no chips. I really like them because they are so light and thin compared to most other ceramic plates.

  The thing about Corelle is that they're lightweight and nearly unbreakable. The dishes you get at the dollar store are usually heavy stoneware that chips fairly easily.

  Last time I ever bought dishes at the dollar store (admittedly many years ago) all they had was stoneware. Corelle is glass rather than clay, so it's pretty light. Current set of Corelle plates is going on fourteen years and I haven't lost any of them. Stoneware generally only lasted four or five without getting chipped or broken for me.

  I love corelleware. . It’s worth noting that you can get generic tempered glass dish ware nowadays dirt cheap & it is fantastic quality and utility alike. I’ve only owned a handful of real Corelle tempered glass dishes, but the generics are just as good by any metric I can see. For a printed set it will probably be easier to get replacements for Corelle, but you can also buy 2x as much in the first place & still spend less. People just don’t appreciate what a miracle glass is because it’s so ubiquitous & cheap.

  It looks to me like corelle is remaking some classics, saw a tiny flowered edged one at a store that looks like the older ones. (If someone wants older look but without collecter prices/ lead worry.) This was at meijers but walmart sells corelle too. As well as khols, but they sell the more expensive patterns. I got a white set with raised floral pattern for a good price from walmart, super cute!  (Madeline pattern. There's another set elsewhere that's same pattern but square dishes by a different name).

  +1 I have corelle dishes and duralex drinking glasses. Both are excellent. I also have bone china mugs (since glass wouldn't be very useful for hot liquids and ceramic and stoneware is less durable than bone china).

  I think Corelle has some like this, under their pyrex and snapware brands. The snapware ones have a bit of a lip, are glass, and are stackable.   Have you checked out Corelle? Made in the US and extremely durable. Although I don’t think they have the breadth and depth you’re looking for. Bonus: Corelle is extremely popular so finding replacement pieces is easy too. And they tend to manufacturer patterns for a while too.

  I feel like all the texture in that design would annoy me with the pre-dishwasher cleaning I do. But they’re pretty! 5 years ago I bought my expensive set of “forever” dishes and I loved them… for 9 months—they were functional and beautiful and works of art! Then they started staining and randomly breaking in half. I donated them all on Facebook Marketplace and bought white Corelle dishes. We have a very small kitchen and I love how little space the Corelle dishes take and I like that coffee mugs weren’t included in the set. I bought like 18 settings so if/when any break, I won’t be worried if I have enough dishes and they’re easy enough to replace and weren’t expensive. I like that we use these dishes for all occasions, including outdoor bbqs. I think we have broken one dish in 3 years and it was totally our fault.

  I have a set of Corelle (plates, bowls, teacups, and a bunch of accessories) that used to belong to my great grandmother. Only a couple have broken. And I love that I can pick up a stack of six+ without effort; most other plates are much heavier. Plain white might be "easier" to match and add to your collection, but it also doesn't really feel that fancy. Unless you can only afford a set of 4 to start with, I would suggest shopping around to find a pattern you like and buy several of that pattern. It will feel a lot nicer than plain white. But that's really your style choice.

I have a set of Corelle plates from 2009ish (6 large plates, 6 small plates, 6 bowls) and one bowl has a chip on the edge and two plates have chips also on the edges (from being dropped onto tile). They’re light, thin, look great. Probably the only company I’d actually simp over, because it’s one less worry in my life and they weren’t even crazy expensive

  I love my Corelle plates. Had them for a year and used every day still look new. I use the pasta plates the most but have a set of bowls and 2 different sized plates. Check the Amazon warehouse for discounted Corelle plates. I got mine for 60% because someone returned an unopened box.

  I've had my corelle set for 15 years and have only broken one mug handle and chipped one bowl edge. Mine was manufactured after 2005, so after they phased out lead. Be wary of corelle made before 2005.

  What’s one product you bought that has lasted forever and was totally worth it?

  Corelle Frost White dishes. They are at least 15 years old. Had a couple fall out of the back of a truck (just a small chip in the lip of a salad bowl)! I’m kind of tired of plain white and sad that they are still going strong because I want new ones, lol.  Dishwasher, microwave, etc. daily and they are still holding up.

  For everyday, nothing fancy dishes it's hard to beat Corelle. I agree with everything said here, plus a couple of unmentioned points: 1. They're thin, so they stack very compactly. If you have limited storage space but like to entertain, this can be and advantage. You can stack roughly twice as many Corelle plates as ceramic dishes in a given height. 2. If you have a Bosch or Miele dishwasher, the rack design isn't well-suited to steep-sided bowls. Corelle bowls fit these racks really well.

  No experience with Luminarc but I have and use the plain white Corelle dinnerware. It is super durable, scratches aren't very apparent, they stack really nicely in a dishwasher, and don't take up much space in a cupboard. As others have mentioned, if you need replacements or more place settings, it is almost guaranteed that you'll be able to find the same dinnerware again. My mom has had a set for as long as I can remember, and I'm over 40. There is one downside, which is if you drop one on the floor, it doesn't just break...it explodes. Though it does have to be a good height drop, they don't shatter most of the time. To contrast, I also have a stoneware set that will break from like a 1 foot drop.

  You get to see the small changes they make over the decades. I have a stack of white plates. Half are 11.25", the other half are 11.75". The bigger ones are stamped "Corningware" and the smaller ones "Corelle". Pretty sure the Corelle have been added from WalMart over the years.

  I have a corelle set (blue snowflake or atomic snowflake I think) that was from the 70s & had been discontinued due to lead in the paint design. Only minor chips on the edge of some of the dinner plates, I've dropped a plate from standing height to hardwood floor after loading it with food and no damage. We only replaced that set with a plain white Corelle set bc I was getting nervous about the lead in the paint near my food.

Easy cleaning, lightweight, and looks amazing on the table. Fyi, last I looked, the sets had non glass cups. (I assume because ceramic conducts less heat.) I hate that. Ugh.   My grandma gave me her Corelle, which according to an internet image search, is from 1990. It's my only dish set, so everything gets heavy use. Still no scratches, no chips. I've dropped plates and bowls on the floor and they haven't broken. Bonus, the cups are about 1 cup, so there's no need to hunt for measuring cups. If I ever needed more dishes, I'd head over to a thrift store and see what I could find.

  I grew up with Corelle. My mom went through a few different sets growing up. They’re not completely indestructible, especially in a house with rowdy, clumsy children. But they are built to last and I would recommend whole heartedly. In my own home, I am using vintage arcopal from France, only because I was obsessed with their designs. I believe arcopal is related to luminarc, in a vintage European way. I’m surprisingly gentle and dainty with my flatware, and I’ve still broken a few pierces. Arcopal:Lumincarc is not a 1:1 comparison, but in my experience, Corelle is maybe half a point sturdier. I’ve never broken a Corelle plate, even as a kid. Either way, you can’t go wrong!   My father would get so upset if my siblings or I broke a plate by accidentally dropping it (which you're statistically more apt to do when around someone who gets very upset if you break a plate by accidentally dropping it). Then we got Corelle and to my utter amazement when I dropped a plate it didn't break, so I  loved them then,  I love them now.  For years I've thought  the Corelle ad to end all Corelle ads should be,  "drop one and your father won't get upset with you!"   I have Corelle that's about 20 years old and most of the set is still in good condition, a couple of bowls have bit it. I have family members that have Corelle older than me. They can be chiped and scuffed up but it's hard. Depending on the pattern you get it can be pretty easy to find replacements for cheap. They are also really light weight which is nice.

  I have Corelle. I have a very basic solid white set of dishes, that’s what I like lol. It is a place setting with plates, saucers, bowls, and cups for 8. I bought this set in 2003. I was single when I bought it. While I was single I moved locally twice. I moved across the state and in with my now husband a year and change later. He is now retired military. During his career we moved a total of 8 times. Of those 8 times, 4 were by military movers (they can be rough). So there were a total of 10 or so moves, and 2 kids using them. 20+ years later I have: 8 plates, 8 saucers, 8 bowls, and 8 cups. If I ever buy more dishes I will buy Corelle.

  we bought two corelle sets when the kids were little rather than use the fine china we got as a wedding gift...I don't think any of it has chipped or broken in the 15 or so years we've used it, and we use it every day - other Dansk bowls we bought have all broken except for one of 6. It's very cheap and durable. We actually never bother bringing out the good stuff.

  I love that we can say things like "only" 9 years old for some products! And another vote for Corelle - I have a few bowls that my parents gifted me when I moved out, so they're going on 15-20 years at this point and still look as good as new.

  Many older dish sets have unsafe levels of lead, cadmium, cobalt and antimony, and you definitely don’t want children using them. The all white Corelle and Luminarc sets don’t test positive for heavy metals, from what I’ve read.

  Old Corelle is BIFL. Current Corelle is nowhere near as durable. My grandmother’s Corelle from 50 years ago is still in great condition despite being used daily most of that time. My parents’ 10 year old Corelle faded within a year and started showing knife marks right away.

  My mom and dad got Corelle dishes in 1980 when they got married. One of my cousins still has the whole set! My mom only got new ones when they redid the kitchen and realized she just wanted a plain white set instead. Pretty sure those plates will outlive us.

  I have a 10-year-old set of white corelle with some 50-year-old corelle bowls with a green stripe mixed in. Not a chip to be found! White is a good choice because it goes with everything.

  I have the plain "winter frost white" round Correlle line. Pros: They have been a solid choice and I love the fact that i can find replacements and add to my set as needed. I think I have only managed to chip or break one dish in the 15 years that I have had them, and chip one mug. I bought a 4 setting base set then added on over the years. Some of the recommended purchases the: - 28oz large soup bowls - love them for cereals, soups, salads, pho, noodles, etc. The deeper bowl makes it easy to not spill. - 16oz small soup bowls - prefer them over the normal angled cereal ones - the condiment bowls are pretty useful when you just have a small bit of icecream or something to add on. - salad plates get the most use as the dinner plates are sometimes too big I want to try some of the versa bowls out sometime soon. Cons: - Replacements feel a bit pricey at times but the fact that they can be had is huge, and that it is a stable line for so many years. - there are days I kinda want a pattern or some colors, as they are very plain but that is the goal. - as they are glass the edges sometimes have slight differences in them versus a poured ceramic, but this is only noticeable when stacked.

  I have Corelle, but mine is only 9 years old. My mother has two sets that are 30+ years old. She moved to a pretty upscale retirement community; their kitchen uses - Corelle. Same white set. After 10 years or so, they do show some cutlery marks that look like metallic scratches. Doesn't seem to affect their longevity.

  Most of my stuff is Corelle and it’s my go to. But if you’re looking for thicker with similar quality, I have a few sets from Crate and Barrel that ticks those boxes. I’d recommend looking in store if there’s one in your area first.

  I gotta say Corelle....I'm sorry. 11 years into our white Corelle and not a stain or chip. We have lost maybe 2 items due to dropping on our tile floor- more many more than that have been dropped, survived, without a scuff. My parents have been using their Corelle for as long as I can remember, so at least 30+ years. My grandparents also did Corelle back from whenever. I knew mine would last so I just went with plain white because I didn't want to get bored of a pattern. We keep a few nicer/heavy/wide soup bowls that are colorful as our accent dishes but, day to day it's Corelle...and I like the thinness to help get cleaner in the dishwasher.

  Corelle! I had a set of Mikasa for maybe 8 years. Chips and scratches. And took up a LOT of room in cabinets. Donated when we moved in 2003 and got all white Corelle 12 place settings (3 boxes). Included dinner, luncheon and bread plates, bowls and lids that fit on the bowls. Still using! Got the former Corelle with blue painted rims for wedding gifts in '76 they were used until enough broke (after a while they are susceptible to breaking and go into a million little shards) probably sometime in the early to mid 90s. So. Definitely BIFL.

  Recommendations for dishes?

  Maaaaaybe try Barkeeper's Friend (Google it first) But I've used it in stoneware mugs to remove tea stains and grey swirls from spoons. We've had 2 different sets of Corelle over the last almost 25 years. Durability/breaking has never been an issue, even as toddlers grew into clumsy or not-always-careful teenagers. My issue is the coloured glaze on the edges of plates and bowls is "splintery" and sometimes tiny shards of it end upon our hands. Obviously we don't want to risk this on food. My most recent set (5 years old) has faded very noticeably from the dishwasher. I contacted them last year, and unfortunately just missed the 3-year guarantee, but they said they would offer 25% off my entire purchase as an appeasement. I'm likely going with the white embossed one with no colour to fade, and we'll hope for the best with the edges. I love many porcelain or stoneware patterns, but I need lightweight dishes. I have had varying issues of carpal tunnel syndrome in my hands and wrists and I have arthritis (not in my hands, but in case it ever gets to them). I have looked exhaustively at dishes online, and opal glass or laminated glass dishes are the same thing as what Corelle "Vitrelle" dishes are.

  Recommendations for dishes?

  When my brother and I were teens (we're in our 50s now), we tested our parents Corelle plates because they always talked about how unbreakable they were. We used them as frisbees, threw them at trees, and ran over them with our cars (gravel driveway). The only thing that broke them was dropping one on a granite countertop from about 4 ft in the air. My parents are in their '80s, and still have those dishes. I don't think you can get more BFL than that.

  Unpopular Opinion: "BIFL" as an excuse for overspending

  Hey now don't knock the corelle! I only use that and it's because of this site it really is less breakable than the heavy stoneware I used to favor. Plus if I do manage to boggle one I can find a replacement plate.  Lodge however is not worth the cult status. I love cast iron and carbon steel, stuff's indestructable and nonstick but Lodge makes the roughest versions out there! And they charge alot for the name. Might as well get a dollar store cast iron, or go to camping section of store, farm store to get a no-name one.
