Cushion quality is also important. I forget what it’s called but you want a certain threshold for density. Costco is nice because it’s typically decent and with easy returns, but they have limited selection and a furniture specialist might be a better bet for you.

Unpopular opinion: The 'BIFL' mindset is becoming a luxury most people can't afford, and that's by design.
And the really poor folks are making decisions like this over tinfoil. I am blessed to walk into my local Costco or Target and buy decent quality foil and at a quantity that ensures at least a bit of savings averaged over my cost per use. Poor folks are getting whatever ripoff is at the corner market, meager in quality and quantity. They’ll be ready for another one soon enough. They have no chance of buying in bulk. This is no way to live.

Towels that don’t suck
I'm US based and I settled on the towels at Costco's warehouse (Purely indulgent). 100% cotton, not too fluffy; they absorb water well. Pretty inexpensive and so much nicer than the towels someone gifted me a few years prior to me buying them. I've been using my current set about 2 years and figure I've got many more years of use out of them. I like them enough I gave a set as a gift.

Those Costco ones are actually solid for beating up at the gym For nicer stuff I'm a big fan of wool cable knits too - they get better with age instead of just falling apart. Got mine in 2020. It's still hanging on I just hate the floppiness. Costco sells a dupe that has the ability to reinforce the perimeter of the opening so it won't collapse. When I decide to retire my Hulken I'll be getting this one instead.

Towels that don't shed/ with very little lint
Hi! We ended up getting the Costco brand hotel towels and they work pretty well. We washed and dried them a couple of times to get most of the initial lint off and now we just make sure to only wash those towels together to make sure they don’t get lint from clothes or blankets on them.

I got my towels at Target and Costco. I washed them with All Free&Clear and bleach. Zero fabric softener. Fabric softener ruins towels and doesn't allow them to dry as well. And bleach your towels. Proper bleach usage will not result in white bloches.

Affordable BIFL womens clothing?
I've been impressed with L L Bean's jeans. I usually wear holes in the crotch (thick thighs!) of jeans within a year. My current pairs are 2-3 years old and still going strong! I also really like Duluth Trading's flannel shirts. I've had some of mine for ten years and they still look new. And as odd as it sounds, the sweatshirts and sweatpants I've gotten from Costco (variety of brands) have all been great. I got three pairs of sweatpants that I wear as pajamas about 10 years ago and they're just starting to show signs of wear

OMG yes. Turkish towels are the way to go. It take a bit of getting used to the fact that they aren't thick, and plush and fuzzy. They are thin cotton which gets softer and more absorbent with each washing. I've gotten mine from Costco. A set of two is about $70. Look for the term Peshtemal when searching for these towels. Quality can vary..Costco's are great.

Yes! I wear cheapo leggings from Costco and 10year old cotton racerbacks from Walmart. Got my partner a set of 5 basketball shorts and he usually wears his older work t-shirts. These can all be manhandled in the machine and if they get gross, torn etc. I’m okay with it.

Costco's Black Beauty Rest pillows are the fantastic. I purchased Oprah's recommended 100% cotton pillows from some 100% organic company for over $100. They sucked!! The Black Beauty Rest pillows are around $35. Also, when they finally get nasty, around $35 to replace. I no longer buy into buying expensive pillows.

The costco tree is better. Source: own costco tree and national tree company tree. I prefer the "tips" that are rubberish something that look more realistic and feel more realistic. The leds are better and brighter. The only downside to the costco tree imho is the stupid purple leds they put in this year vs other years that had a true blue. Aside from personal experience. You can return it if it ever breaks.

Down comforter. Not down-alternative. Real down. Got it from Costco last fall and it’s been amazing year round. I used to get cold in my sleep and my husband sleeps hot, this comforter has kept us perfectly regulated. We’re both just the right amount of toasty and happy all-year (Pennsylvania).

I got Costco ones a few years ago that are 85% fine Merino wool and I love them. BUT, they are ladies socks. I’m not sure if they have an equivalent men’s version. They were only like 14-16$ for 4 pairs and at the time I was just making the switch to wool socks and didn’t know how I would feel about them. I ended up getting 3 more packs to replace my regular winter socks. I can’t speak for Darn Tough, but after browsing a few of their online socks, it looks like the majority of the material isn’t even wool. But again, I only looked at a few… maybe they have a better selection I didn’t see. If you just want to test out wool socks, go for the Costco and save some money. They’ll last long enough and if you find you don’t like wool, then you didn’t just overpay for a pair of socks. Then if you really like them, maybe shell out 25$ for one pair from Darn Tough.

I will say this, don't trust influencers when they tell you to buy X product. I've seen a lot of paid influencers push Bombas socks. I don't trust them. I buy the merino socks blend at Costco, 1 pack every year, darn tough and smart wool when they're on sale. I don't consider socks BIFL. They get a lot of tear and wear from friction. It's an item that needs to be replaced every year to a year and a half IMO. Just like panties.

So while I've been using vented aluminum taller basket type baskets, for the sake of style and floor space before I need to do laundry, I use those ungodly large Costco vinyl bags to carry to the basement. Judging by size, it holds about the capacity of the smaller basket in that picture. After growing up in a home were we kept breaking plastic carriers like that all the time and the metal baskets are too awkward to carry-- the vinyl bags can be easily cleaned, but they're meant for groceries, so no venting. I just strictly use to transport.

If you’re looking for a simple answer-Costco We’re pretty faithful Costco shoppers. And honestly, if we’re somewhere else and need say, a frying pan, so we buy one at Walmart or Canadian Tire, it either ends up being junk or too expensive. We fell like Costco does all the comparison shopping for us, and then narrows the selection down to the best two options. But since you’re Canadian-I should add that there’s a couple things we like about the Brick. When you buy extended warranty (furniture, appliances) you have the peace of mind, and if you don’t use the warranty, at the end of the term, you can use the entire value of the warranty as an instore credit. So five years after buying five appliances, we had like $800 to use for a fold out sofa. We just had $379 from warranty on a leather sofa and loveseat that we put towards a chair. And if you buy a mattress protector with your mattress you get 10 year warranty (be sure to leave tags on mattress). We asked about some depressions in our mattress. They sent us a link. We filled out online forms with photos. Next day we had the full purchase price of our 7 year old mattress as an instore credit for a new one. And at Costco, you can’t lay down on six different mattresses to try them out. They do have great return policies but returning it a week after purchase still sucks.

Costco Hotel Signature Sheets. Not expensive and ridiculously comfortable. Best sheets I’ve ever had (outside of actual hotels, and I agree with you about Marriott) and the closest to my grandma’s ridiculously soft, much-washed sheets which are long gone by now, R.I.P. to both grandma and her sheets! These come in several colors; I have the white. It’s been several years, I think they were ordered around 2020, and they’re holding up quite well.

We have both. Sam's club memberships can be found as low as $25. We have Sam's club plus (and Walmart plus, definitely worth the money btw) and Costco executive (though we will step that down likely next year). Sam's is much better for day to day groceries. Paper goods are pretty well equal but we find Sam's to better for delivery of that stuff. Scan and go and curbside are worth it. Curbside keeps my wife from buying out the store and scan and go makes you feel like a VIP walking past everyone in line. Costco is good for stuff where a lifetime guarantee is wanted, just keep in mind it's not lifetime on electronics and a few other things (as it shouldn't be). Honestly, if I were to pick one it would be Sam's just because they are more practical for everyday items.

I have both. Sam's has scan n go.. I heard Costco is testing their own version Costco gas is better. Top tier. Sam's club usually has more unique/rotating items. They also frequently clearance really good items to clear space. Food court, both have good stuff. Pizza, icee, pretzel Sam's Ice coffee, hotdog. Costco Costco has better return policy. Sam's tends to have more name brand stuff.

Costco for the sole purpose of their gas. I only have anecdotal evidence. My car was consistently getting 400miles for the tank. Avg 33mpg by my own calculations. I switched to Sam’s for 3 months just to see if there was a difference between top tier fuel vs non top tier. My mpg dropped to 29mpg and getting 360miles on a tank. All else stayed equal using 91oct. We have both though and sometimes Sam’s club just has what I want and the checkout process is much better with scan as you go.

I have both (and BJ’s but BJ’s is basically a cleaner Sam’s).Sam’s has better technology because they invested in it. Scan and go is a game changer. Buying on their app is a breeze. Costco is behind the curve on tech so you have to go in and use their registers. They have an app and you can buy online but it comes at a cost. I’ve bought a couple of things online from them and it was a mixed bag. Costco has better store brands and pricing because they limit their margins to 13-15%. Sam’s has better variety, but their store brands suck. Kirklands has quality dupes while members mark is hit or miss. Costco meats are worlds better. Sam’s meats are typical Walmart trash. Morally speaking, Costco is worlds apart. They treat their employees better, what they stand for and their company goals can’t be compared to the Walton’s big box stores. Costco limits the amount of skus they carry, so I would recommend that you check them out first to make sure they meet your needs. They have a solid cancellation and return policy as well. Sam’s is basically bulk Walmart so they have a lot of skus and inventory, so they’re a safe bet but having a Sam’s membership is bad for the soul. Either way, sign up for their credit cards. Totally worth it for the rewards if you do bulk shopping.

Personally for me, it's Costco. I own a membership to both but basically only go to Sam's for things they don't have at Costco (my preferred TP is only at Sam's). I find that the quality of Kirkland Signature is often on par or better than the name brand. From my understanding, basically anything Kirkland is made by the same name brand in the store. For example, Reynolds Wrap makes the Costco aluminum foil, and if you've ever had Haagen-Dazs Almond ice cream bars, they make the Kirkland Signature brand version and it is significantly cheaper and tastes the exact same. Often I will buy something I want to try at Sam's and I will be disappointed. But when I do the same thing with Costco, I'm frequently surprised how much I like it. I've seen a lot of people complaining about the lines. My solution to that is going closer to closing. The self checkout, I often don't wait more than a minute or two. One thing I basically haven't seen mentioned is getting gas at either place. I get my gas almost exclusively from Costco because it is almost always anywhere from 20-50 cents cheaper per gallon. There are often lines but going close too closing helps with that too. They also made it so the gas stations are open 2 hours after they close now. Something you might be interested to know, you can get a Costco card, shop there a couple times, and if you don't like it, they will refund your membership no questions asked. Before I shopped at Costco mainly, I bought a membership for a year and only went there once. At the end of the year, I went in to ask if they could refund me (I needed the money) and they did it on the spot. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Hahaha, yep, can confirm, I definitely believe you because they are JUST that terrible. Genuinely bad for the country as a whole. ...years ago now they approached my old company. We told them, politely, to leave and not come back. Got the impression they didn't expect that answer, but we'd heard about how they treated suppliers and we were profitable anyway so fuck 'em. Year or so later we find they've paid a Chinese company to knock off our main product specifically for Walmart, essentially gambling we couldn't afford to sue a company in China (with no expectation of winning, because China). Nevermind the whole ITC nightmare potentially costing us dozens of times our annual profit. ...aaannnnyyyway, six months later they drop the product line because oops, their knockoff guy missed our reverse-engineering trap, which caused the knockoffs to fail at an unsustainable rate. Fuck Sam Walton and his cronies, now and forever. You only shop at Walmart if you hate America and love the CCP. Costco, on the other hand, are gentlemen and scholars.

I personally prefer Costco. They have a return ANYTIME policy and I mean anytime. I've seen people return a mattress after 10 years and Costco accepted it. They stand by all of their products 100%. I have a membership to both and I shop more at Costco for various reasons but a big one for me is how they treat their employees and product quality. I prefer the easier to navigate aisle labeling of Sam's and they have some bulk items I can't get at Costco.

The 2% cashback pays for itself and more. And the employees are super knowledgeable and helpful. Gas is cheap (yes, there is a line so I go right when it opens at 6:30am). I have Costco executive and with the cash back it pays for itself every year. I get gas there and almost all of my groceries, toiletries etc. The employees are always friendly and helpful and the company is known for paying well and treating their people well. I've had Sam's in the past but didn't like it as much. They tended to not have some of the items I liked, the employees were more likely to be rude or unhelpful, and it's a bit of an uppity complaint but the clientele tended to be trashier- like shouting at each other or listening to music/YouTube videos at full volume while they shopped.

Underrated I like this in the BIFL sub. Costco. Hands down. Has a phenomenal return policy, is a company based in ethics, and often stands by its products that are pretty carefully curated for the store. Has a lot More heathy/organic choices. Executive membership pays for it's self if you're spending enough money (which is not hard to do) and their bigger random items (we call it the adventure aisles where Costco tells YOU what you need) has a lot of high quality items for good deals. just finally ripped a pair of yoga pants I bought there 14 years ago. Downside- I will never find those ever again.

I agree with most here that costco is better especially for perishables. Their milk is boxed which helps insulate it and means as long as its refrigerated properly can last for quiet a while. I have had a gallon of milk from costco last well over a month beyond the date. Meat is also better at Costco. And as others mentioned their Kitkland products are on point. I have gotten a huge bag of mozzarella cheese from sams that was half liquefied with in a week or so of the purchase. Additionally I found meat from sams club also gos bad very quickly. I no longer buy perishables from Sam's. The only good things sams club has over costco is they generally have a larger selection of name brand shelf stable products. They also tend to be cheaper as they are not the organic varieties. Sams has alot of candy chips and snacks and while costco has that stuff they tend to be limited in selection. Examples you can get all kinds of name brand candy or chips regularly available at sams where as costco has candy and chips options but selection is limited and nothing to the degree of sams club. Sams club also has a larger selection of bulk spices. And they offer flavored coffe syrup. Over all if your picking one Costco is the look. I tend to only go to costco but i may stop at sams rarely for self stable things not offered at costco.

I gas up using the two and it pays for it self. Normally I can save 40-50 cents per gallon using the clubs, with a 12 gallon tank that is $4.80 to $6 saved per tank . Over the course of the year they get pretty close. If I only paid for one membership it would for sure.

I belong to both. Sam’s is more convenient to shop at. Less crowded, Scan and Go is amazing, some of their ‘sizes’ are more reasonable. Like I can buy six bagels instead of 12 or 1 bag of salad instead of 2. Quality on consumables seems pretty similar to me. Toilet paper, bottled water, detergent, who cares. I think Costco’s prepared foods / bake goods are better. Sam’s isn’t bad but Costco is better. People rate Costco optical very high. Sam’s seems just as good to me or at least perfectly adequate. I find good deals on clothes at both but Costco tends to have more selection and I think in average a bit higher quality. I feel like in general Costco products are a bit better quality but Sam’s is pretty good as well. People love Costco’s Hot Dog deal for $1.50, it’s actually $1.35 at Sam’s (though I think Costco’s quality is a bit better). $1 pretzel at Sam’s is the shit. Get one every time I walk in and can order from Scan N Go so no line. People rave about Costco’s generous return policy and it’s amazing but I’ve never had a problem returning something to Sam’s. Admittedly I’ve never tried to return a dead Christmas tree though.

They also have a very generous return policy, and the Kirkland brand stuff is almost always stellar. I've used them in four countries now, and they've been excellent in every single one. They also do a pretty good job of tailoring their stock to local markets- the Costco that I went to that was nearest the heavily Jewish neighborhood had a *ton* of kosher for Passover stuff, for instance, including the good, shmura matzah that was about half the price it is anywhere else. Plus I don't particularly want to give the Waltons my money if I don't have to.

Costco, it’s not even close. Higher quality products, if things don’t work out return it - they operate at such tight margins that they can’t handle excess returns without discontinuing the product. Kirkland is single handily the best generic brand - asides HEB. Ethically they show that a company can be wildly successful by being extraordinary to their staff. They sell membership not products in a way - so their whole goal is to retain their members. You also need to have a disposable income to shop there, I’m not going to lie, it’s very expensive to go to Costco; each staple item cost $10-$20, granted you’ll get value out of it.

People at Costco mostly seem to enjoy working there. Products and experience are geared towards quality. Both Costco and Sam's club can save you money but you can probably save same or more by shopping around. The benefit of big box is price consistency and thus savings in the long run. For instance, a gallon of milk at Costco is around $2.50. That's cheaper than the regular $3.19 price at my local grocery store but more expensive than the $1.99 promo the grocery store occasionally runs. Costco customer service and return policy are unmatched.

My dad has both and I have Costco. Pricing is similar for like items though Sam's has lower cost stuff that Costco does not. I vastly prefer Costco, and not just for ethical reasons. In General they make sure the stuff they stock has a certain quality and will discontinue it if there are too many complaints. Profit comes primarily from membership, not sales, so will not stock a bad item just because it is profitable. So I can generally buy anything there with minimal research, vs having to double check everything we get from other places. E.g. Some articles showed that most virgin olive oil is mixed with inferior oil to cut costs, and Costco was one of the 'good' ones. By the way, Sam's club is not like Walmart. The employees at Sam's seem happier than at Walmart, and customer service is vastly better than Walmart. Not sure if it is training or pickier interviewing.

I sometimes get analysis paralysis on purchases. I want to make sure I'm spending my money on something that will last, and that it's at least better than the average product in its segment. A thought occurred to me, after a recent Costco trip: When you buy at Costco, you can be reasonably assured that it's a decent product that will perform well and last a while. And if it's not, their return policy is second to none. And it's not like a new random company that promises lifetime warranties, but you have to pay return shipping or the company goes bust within a year or two along with their glorious warranty. Other tips about looking at recent reviews are good. I used to use Fakespot, but they shut down or are shutting down imminently.

The ethical argument is Costco and it's not close Name brand stuff goes either way, but I think it averages out to about the same. Store brand stuff, Costco regularly beats name brand at a fraction of the price. They get some Kirkland duds sometimes, but those are usually only around for a season before they realize it's a miss. Sam's is more convenient with the scan and go, but Costco food court wins easy, so I'd say it depends on whether you want more convenience or enjoyment. Travel time is always worth considering. Is one way further? Is one in a place near where you'll be running other errands regularly? Or on a normal commute?

Costco is one of the more ethical corporations out there currently. Sam's Club is owned by the same people as Walmart. I have a Costco Executive Membership, and it pays for itself every year thanks to the cash back.

They don't sell the same ones anymore, but the Costco wool socks from several years ago. I work in industry, am on my feet a lot, in rough environments, in the heat, 12 hour shifts, etc. I've been wearing the same dozen or so pair every day for about 9 years now. Supposedly you can still buy NOS online (eBay, Amazon) but I'm suspicious they're fakes so I haven't tried them. They do pill some, but never enough to be a problem.

Uniqlo, Montbell, Snow Peak, Patagonia, Prana. Costco currently has a run of “travel pants”, however, it runs pretty large if you’re outside of the sizing range.

What’s one item you bought that way outperformed its price?
Immersion blender. 12 bucks, makes incredible hummus, soup, salad dressing, mayo, smoothies, sauces, the list is big. And only one tiny part to clean! Get a cheap one, corded. Weighted blanket. Might not be the best at keeping the beads in the cells, but I throw that thang on my legs at night and BAM I'm comfy and drowsy. Rigid core foam roller. People in their 30s complain about back pain. Not me. 10 bucks saved me years of pain. Costco credit card. Not in the spirit of the question but absolutely the biggest money saver I've ever gotten. You can spend *nothing* in store and exclusively use the card for gas and STILL come out on top. Just don't live beyond your means with the card and pay it off every month.

Not percale, but I bought some nice sheets from Costco that over time have become very soft. Not to mention that Costco sheets have deep fitted corners that stay on the bed and they include an extra pillowcase or two.

We are in need of new couches
If you have Costco and want to try a couch there, if it' NOT BIFL, it has lifetime free returns. And if they delivered it to you, they'll pick it up at your house to return it. Granted there is a baked in delivery fee compared to buying in-warehouse. I personally returned a couch to costco after 4yrs because it broke and got a full refund no questions.

Top BIFL Household Items for Starting Over
Check out thrift stores for all of this stuff (which may be difficult in a part of the country that just had a natural disaster.) 1. Corelle or Corningware dishes (I just found corelle plates at the thrift store this weekend for $1 a piece!) 2. Bedding, rugs, towels...Costco. 3. As for kitchen appliances - I just buy whatever America's Test Kitchen recommends. They test the $$(# out of kitchen gear and I 100% trust what they say. All the things I have purchased based on their recommendations have been amazing. 4. I use a cheap Mr. Coffee 5 cup coffee maker and I'm happy with it. My Keurig died after 10 years (honestly a good run for how much I used it while raising babies) and I replaced it with the cheapest thing Target sold. If I get 5 years out of it I'll be happy. If I wanted BIFL coffee I would do a simple pour over - my aunt and uncle have the same pour over pot since Ronald Reagan was president. I am sorry that this happened to you. It's a hard thing to recover from but I know you and your family will rise from it.

So when we got married, I did not have an engagement ring and wedding band. I have a wide white gold wrapped ring with diamonds. It’s more like a cocktail ring but I love it. It’s beautiful. We got it at a pawn shop. That’s something for people to think about, you don’t have to go the traditional route. For our five year anniversary, my husband bought me an anniversary band from Costco. It’s also beautiful and I wear it much more often than my wedding ring.

What to buy for upkeep of house as a 22M?
If you have family/friends who are generous, ask them to buy you a Sam's or Costco membership for a year. you can save $$ on gas for your car (if you drive); they have really great home goods, for prices that are quite reasonable. And the clothing! That's a whole other thing (at least at Costco). Such good stuff!

I need pillow recommendations
I tried Coop, but my head slipped during the night and my neck hurt. Believe it or not, I found the gel cooling contour pillow from Costco to be my favorite. Yes, it’s cooling, but must importantly my head stays at a comfortable angle if I move during the night. (I used to move side to side more, but I sleep better now).

Mesh office chair vs. cushion chair? anyone tested them both?
I had a cheap cushion chair from Office Depot that lasted 20 years. I tried to replace it 15 years in but went back to it because the new cushion chair just wasn't as comfortable. It was finally done in by a new puppy. I now have a mesh chair from Costco for the last two years, and it's been great. Took a little getting used to the arm support position, even with all the adjustments, but I'm not at all concerned about the support.

Costco has a nice one. Yeah that happened to me once…. I avoided it in this new one for years by 1. Never letting it heat too long without food/oil. 2. Never using the highest heat setting and letting food stick (causes local areas of high heat underneath the burnt food, rather than dissapating).

How do you feel about buying things?
Just replaced a pair of winter boots that I’ve been wearing for 15 years with another pair that cost $60. I need good snow boots but I haven’t been unhappy with the ones I had - replacing because they’re just shot. I also didn’t feel like I needed to spend $250 on a new pair. I guess I’m a ‘bang for the buck’ sort of buyer and I am not particularly confident I’m even going to use some item I dig out of storage that still works despite being 50 years old. Sometimes new and cheap stuff is still better than old quality. Gimme good enough for every day. I guess I’m also not confident in warranties and returns beyond Costco. I have lots of battery powered tools and have not yet successfully gotten a battery replaced under warranty - too many hoops. Companies also change and redefine warranty terms to make it harder to use the warranty. I guess there are a tiny handful of things I’d consider BIFL and even then it doesn’t mean breaking the bank. My cast iron skillet will last forever and it’s far from the most expensive one out there.

[BIFL Request] Replacement for Gold Toe cotton quarter athletic socks
I have good luck with sams club socks, I hear costco sells decent ones at a decent price also. I mean they aren't BIFL, but certainly better than BIFafewmonths quality. They are pretty thick and provide decent cusion. I'm sure if you bought $20 a pair darn tough socks or something they would last longer, but that's a bit much for daily wear.
