Best air purifier to buy right now?
I use a Coway and keep it on low most of the day and night, and it’s quiet enough that I forget it’s on. The air feels less stuffy and I wake up less congested.

Box fan equivalent request
Just get a good air purifier and actually filter the air and do something with the spinning fan blades rather than just noise. We have the [Coway AP-1512HH air purifier](https://a.co/d/h6rbpKv) and keep it on fan speed 2 all the time day and night. It gives a good semi quiet fan noise that is comforting for sleeping. Alternatively, we also have the [Dohm classic sound machine - made in USA](https://a.co/d/2ZjGUF1). It has a fan that makes the noise and you rotate the housing to change the size of the air holes and that changes the sound volume and pitch. My wife used to use this but thinks it’s too loud now. The Coway air purifier has a nice sound for sleeping.

Best Air purifier to reasonable price? for Smoke and garbage smell
Is your apartment a condo, or is it in a house and share an HVAC/air handling system with the unit causing the problems? If you are in a condo apartment, new weatherstripping around your door/door frame, and a new door sweep can drastically reduce the amount of contaminants/bad smells entering your unit, and will be needed if you decide to use an ozone generator. Be very cautious with ozone, as it can trigger asthma attacks, as well as causing permanent lung damage. I would only use it on a timer, and be out of the apartment for the **whole time**, and only go back to the apartment after **at least** four hours after it has switched off, and then only to open all the windows for another couple of hours. Depending on the size of your unit, I would likely suggest the Coway Airmega 400. It's better to have an oversized unit, which you can run on a lower speed setting, rather than a smaller unit running on max, because of the noise. **Never** buy an "air purifier" with ozone, as it will trigger asthma attacks, and damage your lungs. Ozone is highly reactive, and does not distinguish between smoke/organic smells and the extremely delicate tissues that line your lungs.

Best Air purifier to reasonable price? for Smoke and garbage smell
Is it coming from outside, or like seeping through the walls from other apartments? I moved into an older apartment a few years ago and was getting a lot of cigarette smoke coming through the walls. I did some strategic sealing up of outlets and cracks which helped some. Then I got monster air filter (Coway 400) which helped a little more. What really helped was when I got some stuff from A/C Infinity in order to bring filtered fresh air into the apartment, essentially to pressurize it slightly and to push our air out through the cracks instead of allowing their air to come in through the cracks. It does have some gaps around the window kit, and in the summer in brings in wet/hot air (cold/dry in the winter) so it increases your electricity/HVAC usage a little, but for me it was worth it and cheaper than breaking the lease and moving again. The Coway air filter is a good recommendation and has been a solid performer for many years. I'm still salty about the first purchase I ever made based on the top recommendation from one of their articles. The infamous Polder dish rack. Serious design flaws that should have been obvious from mere minutes of testing. They've since scrubbed this model from their article, but the comments from 5+ years back are all disgruntled purchasers wondering what the authors were smoking... Since then, I've found the best way to use that site is check the comments to unearth better recommendations from people who have actually used the things.

The Coway AP1512 is the best overall unit at the moment when considering costs, noise, features, filter lifespan, filter replacement costs, scalability, energy use, and availability of quality third party filters. Each covers about 350 square feet optimally. Buy multiple of these instead of one giant unit. It's more cost effective and it yields better results. Or, if you want the super cost effective route, build a Corsi-Rosenthal Box. They accomplish the same thing as a purifier. None of the home grade purifiers are BIFL.

Best home air purifier brand(s)?
I had a very bad/scary lung issue happen about a year ago related to air quality, so have deep dive on this subject. Happy to chat about anything in greater detail, but I found the r/airpurifiers sub to be helpful for this. More broadly, there are 3 axes by which you want to evaluate air purifiers: * ability to block particulate: this is rated as being able to capture particulates of size PM10 and/or PM10 size particulate. Think dust, pollen, etc. HEPA filters will filter these out. Most purifiers at big box stores will do this. Blue Air, Molekule, and other common brands fall in this category. * ability to block VOCs: this is rated as being able to capture “bad smells” (i.e. very small things like smoke, bacteria/mold spores, etc). A HEPA filter will not capture these because they’re too small. You’ll need something with an activated carbon filter as well. These tend to be expensive, and are usually sold as something like “hospital grade”. Austin Air and IQAir are both well thought of, but will cost you a few hundred to replace the filters each time. * price: self-explanatory, but consider both the cost of the device as well as replacement filters. On price, most people agree Coway brand purifiers are the best, along with a DIY Corsi-Rosenthal box. Finally, the [Rtings website](https://www.rtings.com/air-purifier) does a great job scientifically evaluating the effectiveness of various purifiers, though their dataset is smaller than it is for other types of appliances they evaluate, such as TVs

Conway Airmega 250. I came down with long Covid three years ago and these were a lifesaver. (I absolutely have to have clean air constantly or I start having breathing and even *thinking* problems.) I own three of them and run them constantly on the Smart setting. Pushed to the High setting, they will clear a 250 sq ft room of intruding cigarette smoke or skunk effluent in just 5 to 10 minutes. The big filter (I believe HEPA standard) only needs to be replaced about once a year. The thin front filter needs to be vacuumed door washed about once a month. Really good design, no problems. I opted not to get the version with an app.

First of all, I want you to learn about CARDs. CADRs matter most because they measure how effectively an air purifier cleans the air. You need certain CADR values to ensure a purifier can meaningfully reduce contaminants in a room's airspace. A higher CADR mean the purifier can significantly reduce particulates concentrations and clean the space faster. For me, I'd vote for my Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty. I have one per room. Buy two to start (for the living room and primary bedroom) then add more only if you feel it’s necessary.

I have a couple of Levoit and one Coway purifier, and am happy with both brands. I haven't noticed much of a difference as far as allergies go, but I have noticed a huge improvement in my interior air quality when it's smoky outside. I live in Michigan, and we deal with a lot of smoky summer days from a wildfire in Canada. This is a new climate change issue for where I live. I'd never experienced a smoky summer day until a few years ago. I have mild asthma, and air purifiers make my lungs feel better.

I still like the Coway AirMega 200M (same as the AP-1512HH). It’s not the quietest at higher speeds, and it’s not tiny, but it moves the air and filters very well. There’s a reason it’s long been the top pick of Wirecutter. If you want some more style, the various BlueAir models, especially the Pure line are very nice and also work well. They’re a bit expensive though. If money is no object, Austin Air makes some highly regarded machines. In general, UV and ozone are gimmicks. The biggest thing to look at are the CADR ratings. Higher numbers are good, they mean the unit is delivering more filtered air quicker. Always check replacement filter prices, often a good deal on a machine means they make money on selling filters.

Conway Airmega 200M (or AP-1512HH, basically the same with different look) has been one of the most recommended for years. Not only are official filters likely to be available, there are tons of aftermarket options available as well. I don't really have power failures where I am, but I just pulled the cord for 30 seconds, and when it came back on it was still in the previous mode from before I pulled it. All the other options fit your critera pretty well. My only complaint is the blue air quality light on the top panel is brigher than I want in my bedroom, but I just put some tape over it. Best HEPA Air Purifier for Home?
A few people have recommended Coway and I agree. We have the older version of the Airmega 400 and its great; I bought it in 2018 and it is still working perfectly. No it isn't super quiet on the highest speed, but we keep it all the time on the "smart" setting so it kicks on when it needs to. Our current space is about 800 sq ft and it's rated up to 1000 sq ft. I've had it running basically non-stop on the "smart" setting since we moved to our new place in January, we put new filters in and they are about a month away from replacement. We have to clean the pre-filters every month or so, and I vacuum out the exposed sides of the HEPA filters every time I do that. The filters are expensive because they are real HEPA, you can buy knockoffs, but honestly I buy the Airmega branded ones.

Best HEPA Air Purifier for Home?
Same situation. Analysis: 1. Fan noise is primarily determined by turbulence, which is directly correlated with fan speed, which (all else held equal), is linear to to fan rotational speed. Small fans must rotate faster to move the same CFM as a large fan. And a filter can't be aerodynamic. TLDR: Buy big. 2. The wirecutter did a review and all of the fancy technologies (Molekule, etc.) didn't work as well as HEPA. 3. Winix has a fancy ionic mumbo-jumbo but it just wastes power in the WireCutter's tests. 4. The thing that improved performance 50% on most HEPA filters was to have a fuzzy gasket around the HEPA filter to prevent air from going around it. Simple and not sexy. 5. I used to add gasket tape around my Winix but after calculating TCO on all my filters, \*I standardized on Coway AirMega 400/400S (the smart ones that can be monitored online for filter replacement, particle count, etc.). They work like a champ\* - not one failure in at least 5-25 years of operation (multiple filters at play) 6. All other things equal, I'd assume high RPMs lead to faster motor death. The windings on small motors are more likely to short out from dust and whatnot. Bearing surfaces more likely to burn out. 7. You can't get the same number of air changes from your central HVAC, and absent special engineering the increased difficulty of going through a high MERV filter is going to kill your motor (ask an HVAC tech for specifics on pressure differentials). Therefore, those filters are to protect the equipment, not purify your air. Save the money and buy hard floors (CoreTec Luxury Vinyl Tile is fantastic and cheap to install, the marble looks and feels amazing) TCO Analysis: 1. Coway Airmega 400S takes a $45 HEPA filter replacement cartridge every year, but consumes \~64W of power, for a yearly operating cost of $45 + 64W \* 1kW/1000W \* 8760 hr/yr \* $0.12kWhr = $100/yr. Each can cover 1560 sq ft, so \~$0.06/sq ft/yr. 2. WINIX WAC9500 pet ultimate filter takes a $89 “filter B” set, and a $44 HEPA & charcoal “filter A” set every year. That’s $133 + and a power consumption between 6 and 70W, so let’s say \~50W, which is about $52/yr for a TCO of $185/yr for 284 sq ft, so \~$0.65/sq ft per year. 3. A small honeywell air filter took $47 in charcoal and HEPA filters in two years, but takes 84W of power, so $88 in energy, or $132/yr and it’s quite noisy and only covers a single room (310 sq ft), so \~$0.42/sq ft per year.

Air purifier recommendations
OP here, thanks all! I ended up going with the Coway Airmega 230, it ticked all the boxes especially on the appearance front. The only downside is the replacement filters are a bit more pricey than Winix, but I guess there are third-party options. I found that the price varies wildly on Amazon. I bought it the first time for $270, the price later dropped to $235. Since I was still within the return window, I asked Amazon if they would refund the difference and price match. Their idiotic support said no. So I filed a return for the $270 one, bought another one at $235, then passed it off (unopened) as the return for the $270 one. Just a tip if any of you encounter the same issue with Amazon, you \*can\* get a price match this way.

The two brands that held up for me were Coway and Blueair—solid build and reliable performance over time. What really helped me stretch their value was pairing the purifier with Sensibo, so I could monitor air quality and adjust settings automatically instead of running it nonstop. That way the filter lasted longer, and the machine didn’t wear out so quickly. For me, that combo made the investment truly worth it.

Got a small coway about 6 months ago. Works great for my apartment but think I need to buy a second to cover the whole space. The lights/fan speed also change based on the current air quality which I tested by spraying sunscreen near it. Really makes it more obvious when it's being useful.

Out of those, the [Coway AP-1512HH](https://www.reddit.com/user/Wajid-H-Wajid/comments/1mjhpk1/best_5_air_purifiers_to_breathe_clean_in_2025/) is kinda legendary, people swear by how long it lasts. Winix 5510 is also a beast if you've got a bigger room to cover. If budget's tight though, the Levoit smart one gives you a lot of bang for the buck.

I've had [this Coway](https://www.amazon.com/Coway-AP-1512HH-Mighty-Purifier-White/dp/B01728NLRG/) for a year now. It’s quiet and the first filter is easy to clean. It feels sturdy and the air in my home is fresher. I got this purifier because it was recommended for allergies, and it really does make a difference.

Need Help Choosing the Best Air Purifier for Allergies, True HEPA and Quiet
Nice find-using that data helped me pick the Coway AP-1512HH that keeps my 400 sq ft room allergy-free without sounding like a jet. True HEPA plus real carbon pellets, auto mode stays under 25 dB, filters are about $45 a year if you swap prefilter monthly and HEPA yearly. I logged sensor drops with a Qingping monitor: PM2.5 fell from 35 to under 5 in 20 min. If OP needs something smaller, the Levoit Core 300S is almost silent but struggles above 350 sq ft, so run it on high for an hour before bed. Airtable and IFTTT handle the sensor logs, and Pulse for Reddit quietly pulls fresh user reviews so I can tweak settings fast. Data-backed picks like that Coway beat endless scrolling.

Need Help Choosing the Best Air Purifier for Allergies, True HEPA and Quiet
Directly from Austin Air Canada, the CADR(Clean Air Delivery Rates) and decibel levels, both of which they don't tell you on their site, last time I checked: "The CFM by speed is: High 250, Medium 125, Low 47 Decibel levels by speed are: High 62, Medium 52, Low below 50 If you need further assistance, please reach out to Austin Air Canada at 888-236-9525 or customerservice@austinair.ca" Compare that to the Coway Airmega 400, which (from elsewhere on reddit and other sources) tops out at 52dB on high. Decibels are a logarithmic scale, so the 62dB of the Austin Air is **ten times** as loud as 52dB from the Coway 400. The CADR of the Coway Airmega 400 is 400cfm for pollen (source: US Gov EnergyStar program: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjXuOu49pCGAxXOhf0HHTIRAYgQFnoECCgQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.energystar.gov%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2FRoom%2520Air%2520Cleaner%2520Draft%25201%2520Version%25202.0%2520Data%2520and%2520Analysis_0.xlsx&usg=AOvVaw0G-z9wF5ZtF2Gu3KSm1rqA&opi=89978449 ) So, if you want a HEPA filter that is 10 times louder, 40% less efficient, and more than twice the price, then buy the Austin Air, otherwise Coway or pretty much any other HEPA filter is a better bet than the Austin Air. My daughter's school was forced to buy them, and on high they make even ordinary conversation impossible, let alone teaching. Hot. Garbage. Look at Airpura if you want a truly BIFL whole-house option.

Austin Air is overpriced, and sounds like a jet aircraft taking off. For contrast, look at the Coway Airmega 400, or the Airmega400S (for "Smart") if you want detailed sensor readings/remote operation. For that size room, you could even start with the Coway AP-1512HH and then add a second unit if the one wasn't enough.

Thinking about finally getting a "good" air purifier for 2025 – what's ACTUALLY worth it?
Coway Airmega 300 here. I picked up for the wildfires. They run great on smart mode, definitely get cranked up when the stovetop burners come on or when my partner vapes in living room. Cost of filters isn’t too bad, as they last a long time even with two dogs. Might be overkill for an apartment though. I didn’t splurge for the app as I don’t mind putting it on smart mode or manually turning it up or down as I want. Can’t speak to their longevity, but 3 & 5 years going strong respectively.

This is exactly why the real Coway Mighty (AP-1512HH) is still one of the best air purifiers out there. It’s whisper quiet, runs 24/7 without issues, and the CADR ratings are actually verified — meaning it truly cleans the air. Plus, third-party filters that work just as well cost only around $20 a year. For allergy or asthma sufferers, it’s a long-term, no-fuss solution.

I’ve actually used the Coway AP-1512HH as part of my home setup too — it’s solid overall. I like the auto mode, and it does a decent job with dust and pet dander, but I agree it doesn’t feel as refined as something like the Levoit 200S. The filter change process is a bit clunky, and I noticed the replacement filters don’t last quite as long either. Still, for medium-sized rooms, it holds up pretty well if you can catch it on sale.

The Best Air Purifiers for Home that Acutally Works?
I’ve tried a bunch of air purifiers over the years because I have allergies and two cats, and honestly, some of them are just overpriced fans. The ones that actually work for me are the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH and the Levoit Core 400S. The Coway is a beast for bedrooms and living rooms—it’s quiet, has a legit HEPA filter, and you can really tell the air is fresher after running it for a few hours. Plus, the filter replacements aren’t crazy expensive. The Levoit is great if you want smart features and app control, and it covers a pretty big area for the price. Both of these actually help with dust, pet hair, and even cooking smells.

It features a true HEPA filter that captures 99.97% of fine particles like pollen, smoke, and dust, plus a carbon filter that helps with odors. You’ll typically see the same top-rated models across Wirecutter, Consumer Reports, and Tech Gear Lab: the BlueAir Blue Pure 311i+ Max, Coway Airmega 1512HH, and Winix 5500. BlueAir offers a 25% discount for teachers, military, police, and possibly firefighters (can’t recall for sure), available in both the U.S. and Canada. Air Purifier for dust and bird debris?
You need something with a good amount of airflow if you want it to strip a lot of particles from the air. It will not eliminate dust, but it can help. The Winix 5500-2 and AM80 and Conway 1512 are the best pre-built bangs for the buck. Each unit covers about 350 square feet optimally. In a high dust environment, you would want to run them on a higher setting as opposed to the auto setting. Both also have reusable screen prefilters, which helps prolong the life of the HEPA filter (which must be replaced regularly.) Neither are BIFL product, but they will provide a respectable service life. BIFL purifiers exist, but they are extremely expensive and have some major downsides, such as using commercial motors that are louder and consume much more energy. If funds are limited, a Corsi-Rosenthal Box also works great, which you can build yourself for less than the cost of a pre-built unit. However, as you would not have a prefilter on it, the filters would need to be changed more often.

What are the Best Air Purifier in 2025?
I have three Coway Mightys. Run them 24/7 for years. Nearly silent, trouble free, and third party filters (tested for effectiveness) cost $20 a year.

Best air purifier/filter?
I've had my eye on keeping my collectibles dust-free for a while and eventually tried out a Coway AP-1512. I noticed a pretty solid reduction in dust around my display shelves after using it for a few weeks. The HEPA filter does a good job capturing tiny particles and the unit runs quietly enough that I hardly notice it's on. I looked into whole-house systems but decided that a room-specific model would be enough for my needs and easier to maintain

Best air purifier/filter?
I chose the Coway AP-1512HH after doing some research on air purifiers that handle dust well. Running it in my main room has noticeably reduced the dust settling on my collectibles. I keep it on consistently since it’s quiet enough for all-day use, and I make sure to clean the pre-filter regularly. A whole-house unit crossed my mind, but a robust room purifier has been sufficient for my needs without too much hassle.

The Best Air Purifiers?
Coway. It’s Korean. Every Korean family has kimchi. They know how to get the smells out.

The Best Air Purifiers?
Winix 5500-2 and AM80 (same unit, different look) and Coway 1512 are the best prebuilt units from a value perspective. Smaller units and larger units are less efficient, and buying several 5500-2s is more effective and efficient than a single large unit. If you are on a major budget, build a Corsi-Rosenthal Box. If you want a real BIFL purifier that will last like 30 years, the AllerAir AirMedic line is built to this standard, but they also have some significant drawbacks and are not a great match for someone just looking for particulate filtration.

The Best Air Purifiers?
I’m a Coway believer. We have a big one for downstairs and a small one for my son’s room as he’s allergic to the world. I’ll probably buy another big one soon. Best part is? They tell you when they’re working. Helps a TON in the kitchen. Even when my dog runs by and pet hair flies around it turns on. It’s amazing.

The Best Air Purifiers?
I love my Conway AirMega! We’ve had it for a few years now and any time we have strong cooking smells or if I spray some hairspray, it kicks into gear and I can tell it’s working! Can’t speak to the longevity/BIFL just yet but I’ve been happy thus far and it seems like it’s great quality. I also buy their name brand filters.

The Best Air Purifiers?
My coworker loves his coways. I personally have a honeywell that’s been an absolute tank of an air purifier for years now. I recently got a Winix as well that I like although it has a light sensor so it knows when to go into “night mode.” I thought I would like this feature until winter hit and the sun started setting at 4:30 pm and my air purifier thinks it’s night time and isn’t detecting contaminates without a light on near it. I do like that Winix has a year life filter (or we’ll see) and that I can set schedules and check filter life on the app. Costco had the Winix one I got for a good price back in October and I heard they run the sale often so if you have a membership I’d check there!
