What is your most unintentional BIFL item?
1. Plastic Moulinex salad spinner purchased for 50 cents at a thrift store 40 years ago. It was probably nearly 10 years old when I bought it. It’s ugly and loud, but it works! 2. Crock-Pot. 42 years old. Basic as can be. Doesn’t get much use these days, thanks to an Instant Pot. 3. KitchenAid 5 quart mixer. 42 years old. Built like a tank. (To be fair, this was a pretty intentional purchase, lol.) 4. Fire King Jadeite dishes. I purchased a large box of plates, saucers, cups, and bowls at a church jumble sale 45 years ago. Of course, they are older than that. I was just starting out in my first apartment, had very little money, and they were a bargain. I had no idea at the time that they were collectible. Used them daily until a couple of years ago when I began to worry about breaking them.

Best Cooking Pans Now? Recommendation?
I daily a Griswold cast iron pan for everything including eggs. If I'm cooking larger dishes I use my 14 inch De Buyer carbon steel. I have a cheap set of stainless steel pots for general use. And a nice big Crock Pot brand enameled Dutch oven I got on a huge discount when Bed Bath and Beyond started it's death spiral.

What’s one product you bought that has lasted forever and was totally worth it?
my 70's crockpot feet broke off :'( it was a work horse and i miss it terribly. It actually had 4 settings - warm low high and auto shift unlike the modern where they still get to same temps over time (so thats how i burned my soup and chili tops....) Hold yours dearly !

What brand / type of pots & pans are worth investing in as a young adult?
I really love Mafter Bourgeat carbon steel. Lighter than cast iron, and in my opinion easier to season than cast iron. It is generally more expensive than Lodge but less expensive than cast iron such as Staub or Le Crueset. Although for braising/baking/high acid sauces I do love my enameled cast iron. I actually have some stainless steel Rachel Ray stock pots from 2008 that have gone the distance. For a stock pot I actually got a smaller random one at Home Goods for boiling noodles since we have the 6qt Le Creuset as well as my instant pot liner for larger options. Which reminds me, if small cooking appliances are on your list, look for brands like Instant Pot that have models can do double duty since the pot liner can be used on the stove. When I first got my house (at 21!) I specifically got a Crock Pot brand slow cooker that had a heavy ceramic liner that could be also used in the oven for roasting. Just be aware that they have to be specific models with these brands. Not every IP or Crock liner can be used this way

We were given a Crockpot for a wedding gift over 40 years ago, and still use it at least 8 hours a week. 8 x 52 x 40 = 16,640 hours and still going strong.

I have a Black and Decker food processor and a Crock Pot slow cooker from 1991. Both still going strong and used on a regular basis.

Crockpot. They're such simple things (older models are, anyway.) that there's little or nothing to go wrong with them, unles the inner pot gets smashed, or the knob gets broken off.
