  Something you didn’t expect to be BIFL but outlasted your expectations?

  I've carried the same pen daily for close to 15 years now I think. Bought it at a craft show in Michigan's upper peninsula. Made out of turned deer antler, takes Cross brand refills. I've lost it for up to 9 months at a time. It always comes back. Always writes good. I have a business card for the maker somewhere, and I've wanted to find him for years to get like 5 more so I can make sure I always have one no matter what

  Best Garden Hose I’ve Ever Used

  The best hose I've ever used is one that I had custom made. At my local hose and fitting shop (Cross) they will make whatever length you want out of EPDM rubber hose with brass fittings. I leave it outside in the elements with no issues. They are heavy and expensive but worth every penny.

  What are some items under $500 you’ve made so far that changed your life?

  * Water flosser (the new ones are loud - watch reviews on youtube first to find one you like) * I got a fancy Stagg EKG electric kettle but I do NOT like it more than a knockoff I found on amazon. The knockoff is slower to come to a boil by about a minute (6 vs 5 mins) but its waaaay quieter. It also drains better at the end when its time to shake the remaining water out and put it to dry, and it tolerates overfilling a bit better. The Stagg boils over if its even a few mm over the fill line since the top is so narrow. * The knockoff was sold by a brand called Fabuletta but its no longer available. The regular Stagg EKG is good enough I suppose, but pricey. * I gave my gold Cross classic century pen to a close friend, and went to buy another and found that they offer them in chrome-plated now for about $30 ish. I think that is ultimately a better deal than the $180 23k gold-plated ones, though I got mine for under 100 a long time ago. I can only vouch for the experience of using the gold, but it shouldn't be too different. I love those pens! The criteria for this list is that everything is used every day and I expect them to last 10+ years (ideally 50+)

  I am a sustainability educator and finding things that last are a bit part of that. I’ve done quite a bit of research on possible options. Some of these I have (*) while others have been HIGHLY recommended to me. I would still check out the brand as some people who have had their (insert brand name item that they got 15 years ago here) have said that quality has diminished in recent years and won’t last as long. Also if anyone has had bad experiences with any of these, please let me know!
